I live and work in Kodiak, Alaska. Kodiak Island is home to one of the largest bears in the world. They can stand up to 10 feet tall and over 5 feet on all fours. Attacks on humans are very, very rare. The bears tend to stay in their own range, far away from people. But...I have had a few encounters near my home. The bears look my way and move on. But I am always prepared just in case I run into an angry boar or sow protecting her cubs. That is why I carry a 50 caliber S&W. I would not want to wear it in a shoulder rig all the time do to weight. But when I am out and about, I make sure I am carrying it with me. I keep a 50 caliber lever action in my truck. I keep the maximum load. The 50 caliber is the only hand gun I know of that can take down a Kodiak bear. I love these great animals and the last thing I would ever want to do is take one down. Just the same, I always take precautions.
