“Just a 1911”, a nonsensical statement no matter how one spins it. I have a bunch of modern firearms and though some are very reliable and easy to carry nothing is finer than a 1911, especially if its a Colt. My Combat Commander is accurate and reliable, and it is very capable of putting in nice sized leaky holes in anything I may want to shoot. Like a single action revolver, everyone would benefit from owning a 1911. Doing so would remind people how pistols are supposed to shoot.

I carried a Colt 1911 side arm while I was in Viet Nam . I flew as a door gunner on a UH-34, an old Marine Corps helicopter that had an M-60 ( a machine gun for those of you that are too young to know ) mounted on it. I had to use the 1911 on a few occasions and I’m glad it was “just a 1911”. I wonder why EVERY gun maker on the planet has copied the 1911.. maybe because it’s “just a 1911″ . I still have a Colt 1911, a lightweight commander made in 1972 that I carry everyday. I carry it because it’s ” just a 1911 ” and it still hits what I am for.

I’ve only once had to produce a firearm for a “home defense” situation. In 1983, Two miscreants had broken a pane of glass in my front door and one was was reaching through the vacant panel to unlock the door. I grabbed my granddads Colt Government model and ran into the living room, flipped on the lights and aimed it at the perps face. He left immediately. I should add that my grand father bought that Colt in 1929 from the PX where he was stationed in China (I had it lettered by Colt for proof). Even though Colt calls my heirloom a government model, the author of this strange story might still refer to it as a “just a 1911”. I refer to it as my favorite pistol, that was carried by my granddad in WWII and eventually given to me. I carried it with me overseas and have fired everything except +p ammunition through it and it has never jammed, not fired, or failed to fire accurately. I have a safe full of pistols, Glocks, SIGs, Berettas, HKs, Smith & Wesson’s, etc, etc, etc. and not a one of them will do anything my granddads Colt won’t. And that Colt has been doing it for 94 years. Pretty good for “just a 1911”, I’d say. I have a Colt Commander now, as I don’t wish to wear that old pistol down too much any more, although I carried it for a couple of decades. I suspect 94 years from now it will be just like my granddads.

I have two CCW weapons, a Ruger LCR when I really need conceal and a Colt Commander when there’s a higher chance of having to use it (situation/location/etc.). As a retired Marine, the Commander is a “feel at home” weapon because I am so familiar with it…and besides accuracy I always know that when I pull the trigger, it will go bang.

In reply to Sam M. Hah! Triggering pun. I have a newer Colt Commander and it shoots just fine, no problems . But I also have many other pistols. I like to carry either a HKVP9sk or my Sig P365.. Also Glocks. We get all four seasons of weather here and that determines what I carry at times

I carry mine every day. I’ve carried all manner/brands/calibers in the past and this weapon just suits me best. Never a malfunction after bushel baskets of rounds down the pipe. Everyone has their own ‘favorite’ but I choose my Commander. I feed it Federal HydroShok 230gr JHP and it feels like an old friend on my hip. Best hand gun on the planet?.. probably not. Worse guns on the market?.. truck loads. In the end it doesn’t matter what brand or caliber if you miss what you are aiming at.
