Is there a major difference in the recoil between a 410 and a 20 gauge? I am interested in purchasing a shotgun for my wife for home protection while I am away from home because of my job. She is recoil sensitive. There seems to be a larger selection of shotguns with a 20 gauge bore then there is a 410 bore.

O and my young boys love ours. I am currently having trouble finding chokes that are not XF TSS. Anyone know where to find a good selection of choke sizes for it?

410 at moderate ranges with good ammo in practiced hands can do anything a larger gun can do except kick like a mule! Many very serious hunters use the 410. A person must be well practiced in the use of any gun and know it’s limits.

I own a Mossberg 500/410. Yes, it is a cheap pick. But, the gun performs greatly. It’s accurate and light as well as easy to handle. Great ranch gun and I think it’s greatly under rated.

I think we all know what we’re getting with the 410. I think what Phil is trying to point out is how the gun measures up for what it is at the price asked. And- I don’t think I would take my eight year old out hunting with a 410 unless it WAS for squirrels or rabbits. Know the game, apply the tool. These are good affordable shotguns. Not fancy, Not beautiful, and not expensive. Just reliable. Buy one.

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your thoughts. I believe you either did not read the article in its entirety or have a sensitivity to .410 shotguns. Throughout the article, and in the conclusion specifically, I make it clear that it’s a good gun for what it is designed for but make sure that people know exactly what they’re getting.

Sir, sometimes I wonder what a reviewer expects from a budget priced shotgun like the Mossberg 500 .410? Looks? Seems like it’s appearance is just like a jillion other models out there. Handling? One throws the gun to your shoulder and pulls the trigger. No difference there either. Those who buy a .410 definitely know it’s not a moose hunting gun- they don’t have to be reminded of the caliber’s limitations, which you seem to have overlooked. Let me remind you, in case you’ve forgotten- EVERYTHING is a compromise in one way or another. No, the Mossberg isn’t a Winchester Silver Pidgeon, but it’s simply a .410 that is fun, doesn’t cost much, and just “ works”. Sorry, but please save us from your learned snob appeal appraisals. That’s the way it comes across.

In reply to Harland. Thanks for the question- Mossberg only offers adjustable tactical stocks for their 12 and 20 gauge shotguns. However, they do also sell black synthetic stocks (in two sizes) for the .410 Field.

Hello Nate. I was somewhat set back with your review. I own the m500 410 pump.i am glad beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.i do agree, it’s a shooter.i love mine,the feel,handling, quiet smooth action.it’s a winner.
