There never was and never will be a ‘perfect’ handgun, or a ‘perfect’ gun of any kind for that matter. Different gun owners have different needs that they look for their firearms to satisfy, as well as different qualities that they search for when choosing a gun. Therefore, the thought of an all-purpose ‘gun of perfection’ is nonsensical, as certain gun qualities which are subjectively preferable – weight, fire rate, ammo capacity – are contradictory. No two gun owners are going to have the exact same needs and living circumstances, and no two gun models are going to be exactly the same. Different guns accomplish the same goal (to fire a projectile) but employ different processes to do so. Having said that, there is still a wide range available in terms of quality in every class of firearms, and the fact is that some guns are inherently better than others. One of the higher quality guns in the world is the Glock 19 Gen 4, which we will review in this, our Glock 19 Gen 4 Review 2016.

Background

Glock, an Austrian gun manufacturing company, first began producing handguns in the early 1980’s, hitting it big with the release of their highly successful Glock 17 model. Named for the number of renderings it took before the ideal model was captured, the Glock 17 is one of the most revolutionary and acclaimed handguns in history due to its build quality, ease of use, and comfort in hand. Having been made a best-seller due to frenzied buying from numerous law enforcement and military agencies around the world, as well as the general public (the gun remains a favorite for self-defense purposes), the Glock 17 put Glock on the map and gave way to its successor, the Glock 19, as we have covered in the past. Released in the late 1980’s and billed as a compact model of the Glock 17, the Glock 19 sports a shorter barrel and grip and has given way to three successors of its own since its introduction to the market – the Glock 19 Gen 2, Gen 3, and now Gen 4. The second generation Glock 19 features a textured grip and enhanced finish (check out our feature on Glock 19 finishes for more finish options), and the third generation Glock 19 offers a different grip, finger grooves for improved grip, accessory rails, and a thumb rest. In this review, we will cover the enhancements and features offered by the Glock 19 Gen 4, the latest and greatest in Glock’s long and successful line of handguns.

Glock 19 Gen 4 Review – Overview

Before we get into the specifics of the fourth generation model, let’s talk about what makes the Glock 19 series so
special to begin with. As previously stated, the Glock 19 was originally intended to serve as a compact, supplementary firearm to the Glock 17 model. It has certainly served as such, and admirably. The Glock 17 was praised for its reliability, build quality, and safety features – the Glock 19 has been praised for improving on the original Glock recipe for success in a number of ways, including; improved aesthetic and appearance, even easier to learn and enhanced safety features, and it is also an easier concealed carry choice due to the more compact build of the gun. Like the second and third generations of the Glock 19, the fourth generation (or ‘Gen 4’) of the gun comes equipped with certain modifications that push the Glock standard even higher. A stippled grip, fully-replaceable backstraps, larger magazine release button, reversible magazine well for ambidextrous shooting, and a bigger internal spring are just a few of the enhancements that have made the Glock 19 Gen 4 the greatest entry in the Glock series to date.

Gun Build

The signature feature offered by Glock handguns over the years has been the impressive build quality of their guns, and this is certainly lived up to in regards to the Glock 19 Gen 4. Made up of just 34 parts, which helps the gun run simply and smoothly due to the lack of parts that can conceivably become damaged, the Gen 4 features a build that is composed of mostly polymer-2, but incorporates steel as well. Originally criticized due to fears that it would be undetectable by metal detectors, Glock’s polymer formula is a well-kept trade secret. The polymer-2 material is, Glock boasts, more resilient than carbon steel as well as other materials that guns are generally composed of.

Trigger and Barrel

One element of gun manufacturing that Glock has always had down pat is that of their trigger manufacturing, and this is on full display in the Glock 19 Gen 4. The striker-fired gun employs a two-stage trigger which, unsurprisingly, is held to the frame of the gun by use of a polymer pin. Called the ‘Safe Action Trigger’ by Glock, the trigger features a level in its direct center which must be engaged in order to fire the gun – a handy and sensible addition that goes to show that Glock prioritizes safety in its firearms. At a relatively heavy but satisfying 5.5-pound pull weight, the Gen 4 trigger feels steady and true, even after having gone through extensive use. If a lighter pull weight is your preference, an alternative 3.5-pound trigger is offered by Glock that features a lighter, ‘hair trigger’ system. The Glock 19 Gen 4’s barrel is fairly standard, featuring a hexagonal shape and right hand twist. Glock employs a “hills and valley’s” shape to its barrel, which gives the barrel a smoother finish for more reliable firing.

Grip

The comfort, feel, and grip of a gun is a category which is, for the most part, subjective. Different people find different guns comfortable, depending on their weight, size, grip, material, etc. However, for the most part, the Glock 19 Gen 4 has been heavily praised for its comfort and grip options. For people with smaller hands, this gun will likely feel ideal – it has to be held to be fully understood, but the Glock 19 has been known to be described as a firearm that feels as though it’s an extension of the hand, as opposed to an object being held by the hand. The plethora of customizable options for the Glock 19 Gen 4 given the removable backstraps offered, as well as the plethora of both first and third-party grip products available, means that despite the subjective nature of comfort and feel, everyone is likely to be able to find a setup that works for them.

Firing

The Glock 19 has received praise from all over the world for being one of the most enjoyable-to-fire guns on the market, in addition to being maybe the most reliable handgun available for purchase. The replaceable backstraps offer fits that accommodate different shooters, the gun has excellent balance with a small, manageable amount of kick, and it is accurate even at a distance. This is part of why it is one of the most widely-used guns by military and law enforcement agencies.

Magazines

Coming bundled with two interchangeable fifteen-round magazines, the Glock 19 Gen 4 can accommodate magazines of 10, 17, 31, and 33 as well, although the larger the magazine, the more the weight and look of the gun could be compromised. Given the popularity of the Glock 19, as well as Glock handguns in general, there is an abundance of third-party ammunition available for the gun, but it is never recommended to purchase anything but original, Glock-made magazines for your Glock handgun. The situation isn’t dissimilar to that of any kind of product that has third party support; a third-party iPhone charger might be cheaper than one made by Apple, but it won’t work as well as it was not developed by the same company that developed the phone itself, and it could damage your phone as a result. The same logic can be applied to our Glock situation – Glock knows how to make ammunition that is most compatible with their own hand guns. Trust them. It’s never a good idea to sacrifice on safety and quality for the sake of price, especially when dealing with a handgun. While we’re on the subject of safety…

Safety

In addition to the handy ‘Safe Action Trigger’ that was previously described, the Glock 19 Gen 4 offers a number of other safety options which, combined with the trigger safety, make up what is known as Glock’s ‘Safe Action System’. The Gen 4 has a firing pin safety that is designed to prevent the striker from moving on its own, constituting an internal safety as opposed to the external trigger safety. Thirdly, the Glock features a drop safety which prevents the gun from being fired when dropped, regardless of the height of the drop. It’s also important to note that, again, the abundance of third-party external accessories offered for the Glock 19 is a very positive thing (note that this is not including accessories which are internal or implicate the inner-workings of the gun). In regards to safety, a number of handy, comfortable concealed carry holsters and devices are available for purchase which can go a long way towards ensuring the safe use of an already-safe gun. Check out our Top-10 Glock 19 Holsters feature for more information on Glock 19 holsters.

Sights

Whereas some aspects of Glock’s handgun construction have remained relatively stagnant from the Glock 17 all the way through until the Glock 19 Gen 4 (if it’s not broke, why fix it?), this is not the case in regards to the sights of Glock guns. Featuring fixed polymer front and rear sights, with white accents that ‘pop’ for faster target acquisition, the sights offered on the Gen 4 have come a long way from the mediocre sights offered on the previous Glock iterations. The white elements are especially helpful given that a huge percentage of gun owners use their gun for self-defense and home-defense purposes; given that most situations in which someone must defend their home occur at night, visibility is of paramount importance. Once again, it should be noted that there are a number of optional sight attachments and replacements available to best suit the needs of individual gun owners – like comfort, there is not one set solution that works best for everyone.

Conclusion

Is the Glock 19 Gen 4 the perfect hand gun right out of the box, ready for use under any and all circumstances? Absolutely not. If that’s what you’re searching for in a handgun, however, prepare to be sorely disappointed. The Glock 19 Gen 4 is an excellent handgun in a long line of world-class handguns developed by Glock, and a worthy successor to the Glock throne. Almost all of the potential perceived shortcomings in this Glock weapon – grip or sights, for example – generally come down to personal preference, and you’d be hard pressed to find a handgun with more options for customization in subjective quality areas than the Glock 19 (check out our feature on the top Glock 19 modifications for more details, or check out the top-10 Glock 19 accessories). Whether for recreational use, law or military enforcement, or home defense, the Glock 19 Gen 4 is, quite simply, the class of the handgun category.

It is my carrying gun. The Glock 19 remains in a safe at home, but I usually train with the 17.

The Glock 17 is one of the most widely-used handguns in the world, and it continues to be the weapon of choice for first-timers as well as veteran shooters. Professionals are also very fond of the Glock, and it can be seen competing in a wide range of events all over the world.

The Man Who Started It All: Gaston Glock

Glock KG was founded in 1963 by an engineer named Gaston Glock. The company, based in Austria, produced steel and plastic parts. In the 70’s, Glock began producing knives, training grenades, and other products for the Austrian military.

The connections Glock formed with the military led to new opportunities. In 1980, Glock KG received a formal invitation from the Austrian military to develop a new service sidearm. The army wanted to replace their older WWII models, and wanted the company to be involved.

Gaston Glock did not have any firearm experience whatsoever, but he nevertheless accepted the invitation, and set out to create a new handgun for the Austrian military.

Glock put together a team in order to pinpoint traits and qualities which would make up the perfect gun. A few months later, Glock had developed a prototype. The company submitted the semi-automatic model no. 17, so named because it was Glock’s 17th patent, to the approval and scrutiny of the Ministry’s various committees. The tests which the competing guns underwent were harsh and very demanding. Eventually, the Austrian Ministry of Defense decided to pick up Glock’s option, and the model 17 became Austria’s service handgun. The Glock came in first, beating local and international companies who were also competing for the contract.

Austrian military and police began carrying Glock 17 firearms in 1982, and following that the brand had expanded worldwide. Soon after the Glock made its appearance, the Norwegian and Swedish armed forces began carrying it as well. The Glock 17’s popularity grew, and in 1984 NATO took it in as well, making it a standard firearm and giving it a NATO stock number.

Glock’s main offices are in Austria, but they also have offices in the United States, Uruguay, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates.

Glock Generations

Glock 19 Gen 4 in Pink

Over the years, the Glock 17 went through different releases. These were nicknamed “generations” by Glock users, and the name stuck. The company itself has since adopted the term as well, and released its latest Glock 17 as “Gen 4”.

A short timeline:

1982 – Glock produces the Glock model number 17. It has smooth grips on the front and back straps. There is texture on the handle. This is the basis of the Glock, which has remained pretty constant. This is the model known as Gen 1.

1988 – The Gen 2 is produced. One major change is that the recoil spring is one piece, as opposed to the spring on the Gen 1. The grip is also different, since Glock added checkering to the front and back panels.

1996 – The Gen 3 comes along, and it sports some very visible changes – accessory rail, finger grooves, and thumb rest, to name a few. In my opinion, the Gen 3 is a very comfortable gun to hold. Internally, the Glock 17’s mechanism has a few differences, too. There is a smaller magazine-release button, but after training with it, it becomes a very natural gun to work with. This is my personal favorite, which is why it is the one that I carry.

2010 – Gen 4 is released, with the company actually writing Gen 4 on the gun’s slide. The parts of earlier Glock 17 models (Gen 1, 2 and 3) were completely interchangeable, but that is not the case with the Gen 4. Only some of the Glock 17 Gen 4’s parts are interchangeable.

Two main things were different about the Gen 4: First, ergonomics. Second, the recoil system.

Ergonomically, the Gen 4 was a step up. First off, Glock provides multiple, interchangeable back straps along with the gun. Second, the company reduced the gun’s grip. Third, there is a larger magazine release button. The larger magazine release means that a shooter doesn’t need to change the grip in order to change magazines, and that is a huge advantage. Furthermore, the button can be switched from left to right. This ambidextrous design accommodates different shooters.

The magazine release button also caused the magazines themselves to be different, and with the Gen 4 the magazines have an extra cutout, which make them ambidextrous as well. A shooter can still opt to use older Gen magazines. The Gen 4 magazines will fit any older generation, so there is no problem there.

These ergonomic differences allow the Glock 17 to fit many different types of hands. The texturing on the gun also changed with the Gen 4’s release, and it took on a different look and feel. It wasn’t the first time that a textured handle was introduced, but unlike the Gen 2 and Gen 3’s sandpaper-like surface or pyramid-looking grips, the Gen 4 has a smoother texturing.

Dual Recoil Springs

This smoother texturing can be found on the back straps and also in the finger grooves. There is also some special texturing on the front of the trigger guard.

The Gen 4 grips are much better than the Gen 3, and this was a smart move on Glock’s part. It shows just how attentive they are to their customers, and that is no small thing. Ultimately, it is what makes any business work.

As for the recoil system: Gen 4 pistols were equipped with dual recoil springs. In September 2011, Glock initiated a spring exchange program at no extra cost to the customer. According to Glock, the company did this in order to ensure that the Gen 4 was up to standards. In other words, there was a kind of recall. The dual recoil spring was meant to help with recoil, and to improve the life of the gun. The dual recoil springs mean that there is less recoil, and that the muzzle climb is also lessened. This contributes to faster target acquisition, and in a crunch this could mean the difference between life and death.

Dual recoils are also available for the previous Gens, but they became standard with the Gen 4. The dual recoil spring system meant that the Gen 4 came with some changes to the rail system and the frame. Even before the dual recoil spring was used with the Glock 17, Glock was using it with its subcompact handguns, like the Glock 26 and 36.

Gun Safety

As for the Glock’s safety, this has been one of the gun’s advantages from the beginning. The Glock 17 has three safety mechanisms, and they are all related to the trigger. This is why the Glock was introduced as a “safe action” pistol. Two safety features are internal, and one is external.

First, there is an external trigger safety. The trigger safety prevents inadvertent firing, and – once the trigger has been pulled – releasing it automatically reactivates the safety.

Second, the Glock has an internal firing pin safety. Glock 17 is striker-fired, and the pin safety prevents accidental discharges.

Third, there is an internal drop safety feature. Part of the tests which the guns undergo have to do with dropping them from various heights. The guns are repeatedly dropped, to test their reliability.

Glock is simplicity. “Less is more” is a rule of thumb which can be applied in many situations. Firearms are no different. The more parts there are, the more there is that may go wrong with the gun. The Glock 17 has only 35 parts, and that means that it is easy to take apart and easy to reassemble. A field stripping will take seconds (after some training), and that is saying a lot. Furthermore, because there are not many pieces to handle, Glock parts can be switched and modified with greater ease.

The Glock 17 has only two external functions – the slide release and the magazine release. That’s it. Simple. And I happen to love that about this gun. Later generation Glock 17’s are treated with tenifer on the slide, and so they are very resistant to scratches, corrosion, and wear.

Parts and Treatments

Many of the Glock’s parts are made of high strength polymer based on nylon. The rest of the gun is made of steel. The polymer (called polymer-2) in the gun is an invention of Gaston Glock himself. The substance was very unconventional when it was first introduced. Over time, it became clear that Glock knew what he was doing when the company released this new and revolutionary handgun.

Polymer-2 is a substance which is, first and foremost, resistant. It is more resilient than many different steel alloys. This substance can withstand very hot temperatures, shock, and different liquids.

The Glock’s slide is made of a single block of steel, which is made using advanced CNC technology. The barrel and slide are hardened twice, to make sure that they are of the best quality. After that, the slide and barrel are subjected to a tenifer treatment. Tenifer is a substance that is also extremely resistant, and it is a standard in the weapons industry. After the treatment is complete, the gun has a matte gray kind of look to its surface, and that is when a Parkerized finish is applied to the handgun, to give it its final look.

The tenifer treatment helps to protect the steel parts which are inside. What that means is that even if the finish were to wear off, the tenifer-treated parts would still be protected. Tenifer is even effective up to a certain depth below the surface, so you can technically (and practically, for that matter) fire this weapon under water.

Ammo

Ammo

Okay, let’s talk ammo. Full metal jacket or hollow point cartridges are okay, but Glock itself recommends that owners do not use reloaded ammo in the Glock’s barrels. Reloaded ammo is treated differently, and only certain barrels can withstand its power. In truth, the barrel of a Glock 17 could most likely take any kind of 9mm ammo and continue firing. However, it is best to adhere to the company’s suggestions. After all, they are the ones who made the gun.

And as long as we are discussing ammo, let’s bring the magazine into the picture. The Glock 17 Gen 4 comes with 3 factory-made, 17-round polymer magazines. The other Gens come with 2 magazines in their case.

Slide covers can be customized to suit your taste

Let’s look at a few more features:

Firepower – the ability to insert 17-, 19-, and even 33-round magazines into this firearm’s magazine slot is fantastic. Whether you are concealed carrying, are in active duty, or simply at the range, you will be able to find a magazine that you are comfortable with.

Accuracy – even with 33 rounds in a magazine and 1 in the chamber, the gun isn’t worth much without its accuracy. Being on target is ultimately the purpose of every round which leaves the barrel of any gun. The Glock 17 (and its extended family) are all extremely accurate. Point and shoot. Again, simple.

Durability – when it first came out, the question of durability was a big one. People were calling it a plastic pistol, and there was talk of the gun not being durable due to the elements which it was made of. After more than 30 years, the Glock’s durability cannot be contested or denied. It is very durable, and it can withstand harsh conditions. Heat, cold, mud, sand, countless rounds. The Glock can take it all and keep on firing.

Ergonomics – this was covered a little earlier, but let’s expand on it. Like every weapon, the Glock 17 is polarizing. Some love the way it feels in their hand, and some hate it. It is impossible to find a shape or size that is universally loved by all. I didn’t fall in love with the Glock 17 Gen 4 on sight, for instance. I worked on it, broke it in, and trained with it. What I found is that once you get used to the feel of a Glock 17, you discover that it is a wonderful fit. If you have a Gen 4, feel free to experiment. If you have a different Gen, and still want to get a different look or feel to your grip, you can accessorize with aftermarket products. Regardless, ergonomics are very important. As is training with your weapon. The grip and feel can be the most ergonomic thing ever, but unless you train, you may not be able to act when the time comes.

Sights – the factory-made sights are excellent, and even though some Glock owners choose to get other sights, they remain functional and very usable. The 3-dot configuration makes it easy to find your target and take a shot. Many companies make Glock sights, fit for day/night, made of tritium or other substances. (Learn more about tritium and other glock 19 sights here). Which brings us to…

Accessories – the Glock is easily accessorized, and there are many companies which manufacture Glock components. The Glock company itself makes a lot of accessories for its handguns. Glocks are so popular that any random gun shop will probably hold everything you need for your weapon. Popular accessories include different slide release levers, different magazine release levers, grip additions, trigger additions, sights, barrels, lights, lasers, magazine extensions, and even custom slide covers. Many of these are also available as glock 19 accessories, most notably in the form of grip plugs, extended magazine release levers, and customizable slide covers.

Reliability – Glock handguns are all very reliable. While being engineered and manufactured, they undergo extreme tests. Glock has recalled guns several times in the past, but only one of those times included the model 17. It was and is one of the most reliable 9mm guns out there.

Price – The price of a Glock 17 will run about $500. A reasonable price, most would agree. It isn’t a super cheap gun, nor should it be. There is a reason why this is one of the most popular firearms in the world, and it isn’t because it is cheap. For the price you pay, you get great value. You get the confidence, the security, and the peace of mind that a Glock provides.

The popularity of Glock handguns means that there are a lot of companies manufacturing accessories for them. This promotes healthy competition, which yields better prices and affordability across the board.

The Glock has been around for over 30 years, and it is still considered the gun of choice for many professional and non-professional shooters, everyday carriers, as well as military, police, and government agencies around the world. It is an amazing feat of engineering, and it has proven itself time and again. The original Glock 17 is an excellent weapon, and it ranks right up there with the best of them.

Some say that the Glock 17 gen 1 should no longer be considered a weapon, and that it is an antique. I suppose it is a matter of opinion. As far as I am concerned, if you have a Glock 17 Gen 1 which you maintain and train with regularly, it is a very viable carrying option.

US Marshals Service

Upgrades (recalls)

Glock has issued upgrades to its various models. It invited carriers of certain guns and makes to send their handgun in for upgrading. Rather than call it a recall, it was dubbed an upgrade. A smart move, no doubt, but the fact is that Glock was forced to upgrade its pistols from time to time, because the weapons in question had failed certain tests, and were deemed temporarily unsafe.

1992:

The infamous “six part upgrade”, which included:

Extractor

Spring-loaded bearing

Firing pin safety and spring

Firing pin / striker

Trigger bar

2011:

Recoil spring exchange program. As mentioned earlier, this was a recall which included all Gen 4’s. This upgrade wasn’t issued until the company got numerous complaints about the gun. Once the exchange was made, consumers reported that the problems were fixed.

In a press release, Glock announced that it “has developed a new design to the recoil spring assemblies (RSA) on its Gen4 pistols to replace several variations that are functioning in the market today. As part of the company’s commitment to perfection, we are voluntarily exchanging the existing RSA in order to ensure our products perform up to GLOCK’s stringent standards.”

Other upgrades were made over the years, but the 17 was not affected. The only major upgrade was the 2011 one.

Cleaning and Maintenance

In order for an individual to feel confident in his gun, it needs to be checked and maintained regularly. Cleaning is necessary for ensuring the weapon is functioning properly.

Clean Your Gun Regularly for Optimal Use

To clean your Glock, you will need to field strip it, and then use a gun-cleaning kit to hit all of the different points where dirt and grime may accumulate. Basically, this means polishing the barrel inside and out, cleaning the slide, and brushing the frame and all of its rails. A brass brush is recommended, rather than a steel one. Brass won’t do any damage to your barrel, while steel may potentially cause some damage over time.

Having a clean gun means less malfunctions. In fact, a well-cleaned Glock 17 means zero malfunctions. If you take good care of your gun, you will have faster operation speed, very few jams, and a better shooting experience. Once you are done with the cleaning, it is time to apply some lube to sensitive areas of your Glock. Use only several drops of lube for the slide, a couple for the barrel, and one drop for the frame.

When I say “sensitive areas of your Glock”, I mean the places where there is most contact. These are the areas you will want to lube up, so that the constant contact won’t become a jam when that next round is being fired. You can – should? – use your finger for this particular job, and not a rag. Unlike a cotton rag, your finger will not soak up the oil.

Glock 19 and the Future of Glock

The Glock 19 was Glocks answer to the call for a more compact version of the Glock 17. Now in it’s 4th generation the Glock 19 is still king among everyday shooters around the country. They’ll debate about which generation is better but they’ll never question the guns quality. These two handguns continue to be on the top ten lists for everyday carry. My Glock 17 comes out with me everyday. My Glock 19 stays at home as is the perfect backup weapon. The copious amounts of after market Glock accessories allow you to customize the gun to your liking. I keep my Glock 19 clean and simple. But the Glock 19 is only the tip of the Glock firearm iceberg.

Yes, the Glock company has grown in leaps and bounds ever since the release of the Glock 17 and 19. Take a look at the Glock 26 or Glock 43 for some different offerings from the company. Their innovation has led them to develop guns like the Glock 37 which married compact size with an ability to carry .45 caliber rounds. Much like every other gun in Glocks history shooters were demanding a compact and subcompact of the Glock 37. Glock listened to what their customers wanted and soon released the Glock 38 and 39. They then released the Glock 36 whose aim was firepower and concealment.

The build and ease of use of Glock Firearms have given them a loyal following with fans all over the world. Their guns are all about simplicity. If you own one you’ll know what I am talking about. They are some of the easiest guns to field strip. On top of that the interchangeability of their parts has led to the creation of new models like the Glock 30. More importantly, the component parts 100% interchangeable. Glock boasts that their firearms are manufactured using only 34 parts. This reduces the chance of a technical problem while enhancing reliability.

Glocks product line has only gotten more and more diverse. Glocks tireless effort to make the best firearms has made them one of the top gun manufactures in the world. They are on the cutting edge of what shooters want and require in a handgun. That’s why if you see someone carrying, odds are it’s a Glock. The future of Glock looks bright. I am excited to see what they come up with next! (I’m still holding out for a Glock ray gun… a guy can dream!)

Brief History of Glock

In 1980, the Austrian steel and plastic company Glock KG (headed by Gaston Glock) received a formal invitation from the Austrian military to develop a new service sidearm, to replace their older WWII models. Glock KG accepts the invitation, and GLOCK Ges.m.b.H (shortened form: Glock) is formed. In 1982, following a series of tests and exercises, and competing against many companies (local and international), Glock comes out the winner, and is awarded the contract. Austrian military and police have been carrying Glock firearms ever since, and the brand has expanded worldwide.

Glock’s main offices are located in Austria, but they also hold offices in Uruguay, Hong Kong, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Glock’s origins stretch back to the Glock model 17, which was the one submitted to the approval of the Austrian Army in 1982. Up until then, the Army and police were carrying Walther P38 handguns, but the Ministry of Defense decided that a newer, more modern handgun was needed.

The Ministry compiled a list of 17 specifications with which any competing handgun had to comply, before being considered to undergo the Army’s tests and exercises.

Glock had assembled a team of experts, to find what sort of traits and qualities would constitute the perfect combat handgun. Within several months Glock had developed a prototype. Glock submitted the semi-automatic model no. 17, which was so called because it was created from the 17th set of drawings, and the Austrian Ministry of Defense decided to pick up his option. The rest, as they say, is history, thus the Glock 17 was born.

After the Austrian authorities got their hands on the Glock 17, the Norwegian and Swedish armed forces accepted the handgun into their ranks as well. The Glock 17 gained a lot of popularity, and it soon became NATO’s standard firearm, and received a NATO stock number.

Glock 19 Generations Explained

The first generation Glock 19 was introduced in 1988, (commonly known as Glock 19 gen 1) as a compact version of the Glock 17. It sported a shorter barrel and grip. The second generation of Glock 19 (Glock 19 Gen 2) handguns was introduced in 1993, the third generation (Glock 19 Gen 3) in 1998, and in 2010 the “Gen4” Glock 19 was introduced. By then, the “generation” nomenclature (which had been a fan-made word) was recognized by the company itself.

The changes which the Glock 19 went through are not many, but each of them made a difference, and recruited a new generation of handgun carriers, be it in the service or for home defense.

Glock 19 gen 1 – very few of these were made, and even fewer were imported to the United States. Nowadays, they are considered a collector’s item. Many people confuse the Glock 19 gen 1 with cut-down 17’s. While it is true that some 17’s were cut down and made into 19’s, there are indeed original 19’s made in 1988.

The gen 1’s grips have angles which are much closer to those of the original 17. The 19 gen 1 was a transitional handgun. It was introduced just before the gen 2 Glocks were released. The gen 1’s have only one pin above the trigger, and a smoother grip.

Glock 19 gen 2 – Textured grip, and a different finish.

Glock 19 gen 3 – Different grip, finger grooves, accessories rails, Tenifer finish, double pins, thumb rest

Glock 19 gen 4 – stippled grip, replaceable back strap, larger magazine release button (which is also reversible), bigger internal spring

A lot of debate and buzz continues to exist among users about the Glock 19 gen 4 vs gen 3. People carrying and using the Glock 19 Gen 3 will swear by it saying the Glock 19 Gen 4 changes are useless to them.

Glock 19 Parts

The Glock is made up of 34 parts, which is a great advantage. It means that there are less parts that may malfunction. Its simplicity and effectiveness are part of what make the Glock series so popular. If you can pull a trigger – you can use a Glock.

The Glock’s frame, body, and other parts are made of high strength polymer based on nylon, and rest of made of steel. The polymer (called polymer-2) which makes up the Glock was invented by Gaston Glock himself, and was quite unconventional when it was first introduced. Over time, it became clear that Glock had it right when they introduced this revolutionary “plastic” handgun into the market. Glock does not disclose the exact mixture and build of the polymer claiming it as a ‘trade secret’.

Polymer-2 is resistant and more resilient than carbon steel and many steel alloys. It can withstand very hot temperatures, shock, and caustic liquids. The frame also has four short steel rails for the slide. Today the slide is made of a single block of steel using CNC technology. The barrel and slide go through a two-time hardening process, and are subjected to a Tenifer heat treatment. Tenifer is extremely resistant to heat, wear, and corrosion. After the process is complete, and the gun has a matte gray non-glare surface, a Parkerized finish is applied. The Tenifer protects the steel parts which are treated, so that even if the finish were to wear off, the Tenifer-treated parts would still be protected. Tenifer is even effective up to a certain depth below the surface.

Magazines

The Glock 19 comes with two standard 15-round magazines. The magazines are interchangeable, so the Glock 19 can be used with a 10/17/31/33-round magazine as well. Of course, 31- and 33-round magazines considerably affect the weight and look of the gun. However, because of the Glock 19’s full sized grip, you never come in contact with the magazine. Original Glock magazines are made of polymer, and it is always recommended to purchase original Glock magazines to use with your Glock. Other magazines may be cheaper, but in a situation when you have to change the mags rapidly, you will know where that extra money went. It is all about being dependable, and the best way to remain confident in your firearm and ammunition is to use the highest quality equipment. This is not a toy. You’re betting your life on it.

Many high quality aftermarket magazines and speed loaders are available from various manufacturers. As Glock is certainly a fan favorite in the carry market, tons of options are available. Doing proper research and testing to find what’s best is a must.

Different Size Magazines, Some for the G19 Some for the 17

Trigger

The trigger is a two stage trigger, and it is held to the frame by use of a polymer pin. The trigger guard is square and checkered. Glocks have no hammer, and are all striker-fired. The trigger safety is built in to the trigger itself on all Glock models. This is accomplished by a small lever alongside the trigger that remains in a forward position, preventing the trigger from moving rearward. Without depressing the lever, deliberately at the same time as the trigger itself the pistol can not fire.

Trigger Pull Weight

~5.5 lbs.

Glocks triggers are changeable, depending on the user’s needs, be it for everyday carry or competition. In order to make a shot count, and for a quicker reset, many shooters prefer a lighter “hair-trigger” system. 3.5 lbs. triggers are available, and they install easily, for those of you who would like a more relaxed, lighter, trigger pull.

Glock 19 Action Type

Glock 19 is Double Action Only (DAO), as with all striker fired type guns, there is no hammer. This means that the trigger performs both actions of cocking and releasing the internal part which hits the firing pin and sends the bullet flying.

Safety

While there is no safety on the frame itself, the Glock 19 has three independent safety options:

They dub it their “Safe Action”® System

Breakdown of Glock’s “Safe
Action”® System”

The trigger has a small lock that must be pressed. It keeps the Glock from being fired inadvertently. It is an external safety.

The Glock has a firing pin safety that keeps the striker from moving forward on its own, an internal safety.

The Glock has a drop safety. Even if the gun is dropped from a considerable height, with a round in the chamber, it will not fire.

Barrel & Barrel rifling

While there is nothing wrong with Glock’s barrels, some shooters choose to replace the factory barrel with other types of barrel. A threaded barrel, for example, could provide certain advantages. Shooters who are in competition, or others who work in law-enforcement, choose to modify the barrel in order to enable quicker addition of suppressors.

Others modify their barrels in order to facilitate the usage of lead-cast bullets, or other types and calibers of ammunition.

The Glock 19’s barrel rifling is a right hand twist, hexagonal in shape. Length of the twist is 9.84 in. Unlike the conventional “lands and grooves” method, Glock uses a “hills and valleys” shape, which gives the barrel a smoother definition. Another way in which Glock is unconventional is the method which it uses to create the rifling. Rather than use a broaching machine, Glock uses a mandrel to achieve the desired hexagonal shape. Because it uses no grooves and slots, the gases create a more efficient seal behind the bullet, and the Glock can therefore achieve better results. Because of this method, the Glock provides somewhat better muzzle velocity, increased accuracy, and greater ease of maintenance.

Sights

The Glock 19 has fixed polymer front and rear sights, with white elements for quicker target acquisition. The rear sight can be adjusted. Many people choose to take a marker and darken the rear sight’s white elements, so that only one white dot appears, on the front sight for alignment.

The standard height of the front sight on a Glock 19 is 0.165 in. The rear sight’s height is 0.256 in. Rear sights are also available in 0.24 in., 0.27 in., and 0.29 in.

Length between sights is 6.02 in.

Changing the rear sight will result in a shift of approximately 1.97 in. over a 27 yards distance.

Night sights are available. They are Tritium, illuminated at night, white in daylight.

In order to install the sights, you will need the right tools and knowhow. It is recommended to take them to a gunsmith, rather than attempt to install the sights yourself. An experienced gunsmith will have no trouble installing the Glock sights.

Prices for sights differ from polymer to steel.

Estimates –

Front sight (polymer) – $4.50

Rear sight (polymer) – $5.00

Front sight (steel) – $16.00

Rear sight (steel) – $15.00

Prices for night sights range from $40 – $160. Some companies that make night sights for the Glock 19 are Trijicon, Meprolight, AmeriGlo, Battlehook, Truglo, XS, and Glock itself.

For regular sights, tools like a sight pusher are recommended. For night sights or tritium sights, the tools become a necessity. It is inadvisable to install the sights yourself without the proper tools and know-how. A gun without proper sights and alignment is no better then shooting with your eyes closed.
Grips

Getting a good grip on your handgun is a cardinal rule of fast and accurate shooting. If your hand slips, or if your grip is not secure, the recoil can send your next shot in a totally different direction.

Glock 19 Gen4 Backstraps

Having a good grip provides the shooter with control, in any type of situation. In order to maintain accuracy and speed – both of which are vital in self-defense as well as competition – is it important to have a proper grip on your handgun.

Different grips are available for the Glock 19. The patented Talon grips are very popular with civilians, as well as with law-enforcement personnel. Another widely used model is raptor grips. Those two are adhesive models, but there are also slip on grips available, such as Hogue and Pachmayr.

Talon Grips on a Glock

Grips are also available for magazines. Backstraps are available for Glock 19 Gen4, as well as some models that were made prior to the Gen4. Grip adaptors, which elongate the user’s grip, are available by companies such as Grip Force or Decal Grip. Prices for grips are relatively low. It is all about finding out which is most comfortable for you and your hand. As with any gun accessory, what’s right for you all depends on what your personal preference is and what you’re looking for.

The Glock 19’s caliber has been a 9mm since its inception. It is the only the caliber in which the Glock 19 comes. The Glock 23, for instance, is an exact match to the 19, only it sports .40 S&W caliber slugs, not 9mm.

There aren’t that many styling options when it comes to the Glock 19 other then changing its colors. The slide cover plate can be customized, and many choose to do so. It is a nice little twist, which makes the handgun that much more personal. With the Gen4 there are different backstraps available as well.

Glock 19 Accessories

The Glock 19 has many accessories, including an arm sling, top rails, tactical lights, scopes, stocks, and laser guides.

When it comes to stocks, an important thing to mention is that adding a stock to your handgun may effectively turn it into a short barrel rifle (SBR). If it becomes an SBR, it must be registered with the ATF. Carrying an unregistered SBR is a federal offense, and one must use caution.

Does this tricked out Glock 19 look anything like the pistol we’re reviewing?

Another popular addition, especially when the gun is not yet broken in, is the extended slide stop lever. Many shooters complain of firearms’ small slide lever. This is not at all specific to the Glock 19 Gen4. There is the option of extending the slide lever, making it easier to manipulate and control the weapon, whether at the range or in competition. It can certainly make a difference when self-defense is necessary.

Another addition, which Glock added as standard to their Gen4 release, is the extended magazine release lever. Changing magazines quickly and efficiently is a necessary skill for shooters of all kinds. It is definitely needed for law-enforcement and military, and also for those who carry every day.

Another modification which many take advantage of is magazine enhancement. A standard Glock 19 magazine holds 15 rounds, but there are extensions available. Not to mention the fact that multiple size, manufacturer and after market options are available in many different sizes.

A popular, and rather small, addition is a new mag well insert. This piece of polymer engineering improves grip and performance. It is an item which can make a world of difference when changing magazines, and ensures that every magazine is inserted properly, every time. In times of emergency, or even at the range, you can shave precious seconds off your time with this little add-on.

Glock 19 Carry

The Glock 19 is one of the finest choices for every day carry (EDC). It is very popular with all types of carriers, whether concealed or open. It is optimal for men and women, though women may want to consider the Gen4 as opposed to the previous generations of Glock 19. This is due to the Gen4’s backstrap changing capabilities. Adjusting the backstrap means having more options of grip sizes, which is important. As for concealed carry weapons (CCW), the Glock 19 is compact enough to fit most people. It is the CCW choice for many whose states allow conceal carry. The Glock 19 is a favorite of a large portion of the American Carry market for it’s lightweight, durability and reliability. As Carry will cause wear on any weapon, the Glock 19’s options for replacement parts, aftermarket parts and ease of customization make it a real favorite among users.

Upgrades (recalls)

Over the years, Glock had issued upgrades, in which it invited carriers of certain models and makes to send their handgun in for upgrading. Many times, these were initiated by Glock and not consumers. Although there was a recent Gen4 upgrade which was practically demanded by the Gen4-carrying consumer. More on the history of Glock can be seen here.

Past upgrades of the Glock 19:

1990:

Glock announced its Glock 19 pistols “may have the potential of the action to malfunction as follows:

The slide locking back on a full magazine.

Failure to lock into battery because the barrel lug drags on the slide lock.

The magazine follower tips or sticks in the magazine tube.“

1992:

The six part upgrade, which included:

Extractor

Spring-loaded bearing

Firing pin safety and spring

Firing pin / striker

Trigger bar

1993:

“These pistols have the potential for an UNINTENTIONAL DISCHARGE of a cartridge with the action open.

The Glock model 19 pistol slide has a bottom protrusion, whose function is to push cartridges from the top of the magazine into the chamber. When the pistol is jammed in a double feed situation, the slide protrusion can come in contact with the primer of the jammed cartridge and cause UNINTENTIONAL DISCHARGE while the action is open.”

2011:

Glock announced it “has developed a new design to the recoil spring assemblies on its Gen4 pistols to replace several variations that are functioning in the market today. As part of the company’s commitment to perfection, we are voluntarily exchanging the existing RSA in order to ensure our products perform up to GLOCK’s stringent standards.”

Whenever Glock issued an upgrade (i.e. recall) for a certain model or make, they did it for free. The upgrades they made were essential, and they are part of what has made the Glock 19 stay so popular for over 25 years.

Glock 19 Cleaning and maintenance

Like any firearm, regular cleaning is necessary for the optimal functionality of the weapon. In order to clean your Glock you will need to strip it down (field strip), and use a gun-cleaning kit to polish the barrel, clean the slide, brush the frame and all of its rails, and make sure you are hitting all of the spots where dirt and grime may accumulate. Using a brass brush is better than using steel, since brass won’t do any damage to your barrel.

Having a clean gun means less malfunctions, faster operation, fewer jams, and ultimately a better shooting experience. Once you are done with the cleaning part, it is time to lube your Glock. Remember not to use too much lube. Use several drops of lube for the slide, a couple for the barrel, and one drop for the frame.

The places where there is most contact are the ones you will want to lube up. You can use your finger for this particular chore, because unlike a cotton rag, your finger will not absorb the oil.

Glock 19 Review Hickok45

Here is a great review that goes truly in depth on the Glock 19. Well worth a watch. Hickok45 does a LOT of great gun review videos. As he calls it, ‘Some polymer wonder’. We agree.

Glock 19 Gen 4 Review

The new Glock 19 Gen 4 Sight Picture. Notice the rear sight change?

I have heard several carriers of the Glock 19 refer to it as the AK-47 of handguns. It has been called America’s Favorite Gun, and it has certainly taken the world by storm. It isn’t just the unique steel and polymer-2 build, it is the overall effectiveness of it. The AK-47 shoots whether it is covered in dirt, mud, rain, blood, sand – anything, really. The thing just shoots, and shoots consistently well.

This how I – and many others, for that matter – feel about the Glock 19. It is simple, useful, and it gets the job done. You purchase it, and have no need to replace anything, nor add anything (other than what the company sends out for, of course) for it to fire. It is a user-friendly handgun, assembled and disassembled quickly, easy to clean, fit for men and women of all types of physiques, with a high rate of concealment and secrecy.

It is a medium, compact-sized handgun which will fit any need, from every day carry, through competition and sports, to home defense. Gun enthusiasts love it, as do complete novices and first-time shooters. It is not by mere coincidence that this gun had succeeded in completing the Austrian military trials almost 35 years ago. It can take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’, and that is what makes it the gun of choice for so many military and para-military organizations, worldwide.

The Glock 19 Gen4 also has a slightly different sight picture than it’s predecessors. As as you can see based on the image below, rather then the standard three dot line up it uses a white inline square instead. This was changed based on requests from the Glock community.

Because of the Glock 19’s popularity, any user can walk into any random gun shop and find parts, accessories, and many different options that are available and suitable for the Glock 19.

So, whether you are new to the world of handguns and firearms, or whether you are a comfortable and seasoned shooter – the Glock 19 is definitely a gun to own.

The Future of The Glock 19: Gen 5?

Glock Gen 5: The Glock 17M

The fifth generation of Glock guns is coming. We all knew that it was only a matter of time – and with recent news leaking of the FBI deciding to sign on for an order of ‘M’ series handguns – we know that time is near at hand. Pictured to the right is a leaked photo of the Glock 17M – the first such photo to be seen of the new generation of Glock handguns. Although the Glock 19M would represent a more compact version of the 17M, there are a number of conclusions that we can already draw regarding the 19M based on what we are seeing. Among these changes include the elimination of finger grooves, a new finish, new rifling, an extended front lip for mags, a new ambidextrous slide release, a flared magwell, and more.

That is only representative of the changes which are evident to the naked eye – we can’t wait to find out about the inner workings of the gun. One thing’s for sure, if the Glock 19 Gen 5 builds on its predecessor as well as the Glock 19 Gen 4 did, we are in for a treat. Glock listens to its consumers – in the private sector and from among everyday gun lovers – as evidence by these changes. Glock Gen 5 has secured the FBI contract, the army and law enforcement may shortly follow (although some minor flaws have been reported), and before we know it they’ll be in the holsters of gun lovers nation wide.
