The Sig MCX series is innovative, modular, and pricey but this makes for an elegant weapons system. Let's see how impressive it really is

In the mid-1800s, three partners went into business. These gentlemen originally built what they thought would be a wagon factory, in Rhine Falls, Switzerland. Well, it was. They produced wagons and railway cars for some years. At the start, this trio had no way of knowing that their company would eventually become one of the world’s largest and most respected manufacturers of small arms.

When the Swiss military needed a new type of firearm, they turned to the Schweizerische Waggon Fabrik (“Swiss Wagon Factory”). The musket which they designed and produced beat the competition and the Ministry of Defense ordered 30,000 units. The company changed its name to Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft (“Swiss Industrial Company”, or SIG), and it was on its way.

In 1976, a partnership was formed between SIG in Switzerland and J.P. Sauer & Sohn in Germany. SIG Sauer firearms have been imported into the States since the mid-1980s. Nowadays, the company’s U.S. subsidiary is far from home out in New Hampshire.

Sig Sauer MCX Series Overview

In 2015, Sig designed and produced a series of firearms that utilized the same system that was featured on the previously-released MPX submachine gun. The MCX notably has the option of conversion between different calibers. The semi-auto option is available for the civilian market, while the full-auto capabilities are reserved for armed forces and law enforcement agencies. The MCX comes in the form of a compact carbine, standard carbine, rifle, and short-barreled rifle (SBR). This is a classic Sig move offering such versatility in one line that’s helped them become one of the top gunmakers in the world.

Sig MCX Rattler PCB

There is also the MCX Low Visibility Assault Weapon, which is available for military and law enforcement only. It’s a full-auto short-barreled rifle, which features built-in suppression. It’s a SIG Sauer SBR with a real combat-proven lineage and is a pretty sweet setup.

The Sig MCX Pistol and Sig MCX SBR are both rather expensive, with an MSRP of $2,233 and $2,235, respectively. For those who can afford the price, what you get in return is one of the best SIG systems available. The MCX series has some features that make it an instant hit – no pun intended.

Sig MCX Virtus

Released in 2017, it is considered the “Gen 2” of the MCX series. The SIG MCX Virtus Patrol, SBR, and Pistol models are the standard, short-barreled, and pistol configurations, respectively. It is currently offered in 5.56mm and 300 BLK, with a polymer grip, alloy forend, and carbon steel barrel.

Sig Sauer MCX Virtus Patrol

I enjoyed the two-stage Matchlite Duo trigger on the SIG Virtus. Sure, there are upgrades and aftermarket options available, but for an out-of-the-box trigger, it’s pretty damn good. I am always trying to think of the strange-noise-in-the-middle-of-the-night scenario. In such a situation, the trigger will hardly matter. Home-defense is not a competition, by any stretch of the imagination. You want a weapon that will perform, and perform well.

Specs

Sig Rattler

The Rattler is an MCX-series semi-auto pistol, available in 5.56mm and 300 BLK. It features a 5.5-inch barrel, and there is the option of a brace/stock and a suppressor. The Rattler proves to be a great – albeit quite expensive – choice for a home-defense system. You can use it in a variety of scenarios, and it’s discreet enough to get around with inside or outside.

Sig MCX Rattler SBR

It’s not a rifle-length barrel, which means that it will immediately get a resounding NO from certain would-be purchasers. Some folks are only about SIG rifles. It’s a low-visibility weapon that supports 30-round AR-15 magazines, it could act as a weapon for the home, vehicle, or outdoors alike. The PCB (pivoting contour brace) is a real asset, and it helps you be ready for just about anything. With free-float handguard, an M-LOK accessory rail, carbon steel barrel, enhanced SIG trigger, and other MCX goodies, the SIG Sauer MCX 300 Blackout Rattler is an accurate and reliable piece of defense hardware. But I daresay it won’t be everyone’s cup of gin. Some are looking for other attributes and characteristics, so it definitely is not a one-size-fits-all type of weapon.

Conclusion

SIG Sauer rifles are many and varied. There is a lot of history there, of different models that were created and distributed and then dropped. The 300 BLK pistol is a hot item that not only SIG has dealings with, of course. Ever since the BLK 300 was introduced, there’ve been manufacturers who geared their production lines towards that trendy caliber. And so far, it has proven itself worthy of the praise.

Having a firm and tight grip on your weapon is paramount. SB Tactical understands this very well, much like many other accessory-producing companies – or anyone who has ever shot a weapon, really.

Your grip could be the factor which makes or breaks your initial aim. Without a proper grasp, there is nothing that will stop those shots from going all over the place and missing the mark. SB Tactical’s goal is to help shooters find greater stability and accuracy, and to that end they have created their extensive line of pistol braces.

SB Tactical are credited with innovating the first pistol stabilizing braces, though other companies have followed in their footsteps and come up with very popular alternatives.

SB Tactical

SB Tactical was founded by Alex Bosco and Grant Shaw in 2013. Bosco, an Army veteran, was interested in helping wounded and/or disabled shooters regain some of the control they had lost. This is how SB Tactical – and its first pistol-stabilizing braces – was born.

Even though it was founded with the intention of helping those who are disabled (or differently abled), these braces have been embraced by many shooters, not the least of which are short-barreled rifle (SBR) enthusiasts.

Bosco was unsure of the legal implications of adding such an accessory to an AR pistol. Therefore, he created the first prototype in his garage, submitted it to the ATF, and gained their approval before going into production.

Uzi with SB Tactical PSB

The ATF wrote Bosco a letter, stating that adding such a device to an AR pistol will not render it a short-barreled rifle. Bosco had a vision, a prototype, and now he had government approval – everything he needed to get into business, with Shaw running the managerial aspect of the company.

The first braces were designed and shipped in the Spring of 2013, after SB had met and signed an agreement with SIG Sauer and later with Century Arms. The deal – first formulated at SHOT Show – was that SIG would sell the AR brace, and Century would sell the AK brace.

Both of those companies had exclusive rights to these first models, titled SB15 and SB47 (in accordance with the receiving weapons’ ubiquitous model numbers). I love it when SHOT Show and similar firearms-related conferences manage to bring small businesses and major manufacturers together to achieve a common goal.

In 2015, the exclusive sales agreements with SIG Sauer and Century Arms came to an end, and SB went full steam ahead designing, manufacturing, and distributing newer braces for use with other brands and models.

SB Tactical SB Mini

These pistol braces provide the shooter with better control over the firearm. This is their primary purpose, and it is achieved by adding another point of contact with the shooter’s body, which in turn leads to improved accuracy. This is why, in my opinion, this item actually deserves the term ‘tactical’.

SB Tactical Braces

SB Tactical’s braces are compatible with most commercially available pistol buffer tubes. However, there is no set industry standard for the tube’s diameter, so the fit may not be optimal at first.

SB Tactical FS1913

SB are well aware of this, and should the fit be too tight or too loose, this can be mitigated by following the instructions on their website or perhaps by reading the attached manual.

The company states that their braces will fit buffer tubes which are 1.1” to 1.25” in diameter. SB also sells a standalone standard AR buffer tube (1.2” diameter, 8.3” long), made of 7075 T6 aluminum, designed to be an optimal fit for their braces. They are showcasing this item on their website for the MSRP of $39.95.

The brace itself is very straight-forward, and it has few components to it (brace, rod, housing, strap). Other than the actual brace-end of it, the most important part is the buffer tube that comes with it. This is the game-changer, in the eyes of many users.

SB Tactical SBPDW

It means you can use the brace and potentially shoulder your pistol, effectively making it a non-SBR. This means no $200 tax stamp, no waiting period, and no special issues when crossing state lines.

Over time, the ATF has sent several more letters to SB Tactical, to clarify the position of the brace in the eyes of the government. Ironically, these letters managed to confuse the shooting public, because of the very specific wording involved. Things having to do with original designation and potential “redesign” of the accessory, left the shooting public unsure of the legality of such items.

SB Tactical SBTIi

The ATF’s policy regarding pistol braces is still a little vague, but the bottom line is that a pistol stabilizing brace may be purchased, owned, and installed on a pistol, and that the addition of such an accessory to the pistol does not take away from its ‘pistol’ status or classification.

Concurrently, a pistol with a brace remains a pistol, period. As long as you don’t alter the original design of the pistol brace, the ATF cannot place anything unlawful at your feet.

Still, there is a question here.

That question comes up time and again on various gun forums and almost anytime the topic of pistol braces comes up. And that question is this: why bother? Why buy a brace instead of simply purchasing a tax stamp and making your pistol a proper SBR (where permitted)?

Well, for some people it is not a mere question of money, but more a question of hassle. Is it worth it? Is the (sometimes lengthy) process worth the time? The bureaucratic headache? The extra cash?

The answer to this question changes from one person to the next, and it all depends on your circumstances.

SB Tactical MBX PSB

Having a tax stamp could save you future hassles, but getting a brace will save you from present hassles. Your call, but DO do the research before buying one or the other. Not all states are governed equally, as we all know, so check your local laws regarding either one of these methods, as well as the legal implications which may come into play.

SB sells braces for the AR and AK platforms, and also for certain models of HK, CZ, Ruger, Remington, Mossberg, and even the IWI Galil. The prices vary, but the MSRP for these models runs anywhere from $79.99 to $329.99, depending on the one in question.

This adds yet another factor into the “SBR VS brace” conundrum, since some of these braces cost more than a SBR tax stamp itself!

SB Tactical SBA3

In April of 2018, SB Tactical began shipping its newest model – the SBA3. This is an AR pistol stabilizing brace, and it is designed for any platform which accepts mil-spec carbine receiver extensions.

The item’s weight is 6.75 oz, and its length is 6.1”. It is adjustable (5 positions), includes a QD point for sling, and comes in black or FDE. MSRP $169.99

SB Tactical SBA3 on Sig M400

This thing takes almost no time to install, is built from sturdy material, and as mentioned earlier it has the potential to provide the user with the advantage of increased stability and accuracy.

The question of price is always something to consider, but if you are not interested in going the SBR route – or even if you are – the SBA3 is a fine alternative, be it permanent or temporary.

At SHOT Show 2019, SB Tactical unveiled their newest prototype, the SBA4. This model retains some of the previous model’s attributes, and attempts to make them better.

SB Tactical SBPDW and SBM4

There is the mil-spec buffer tube, increased adjustability, higher cheek-rise, wider back-end, and the bottom has been reinforced so there is less rotation and/or movement. The QD point has been moved from the back a bit more to the <g class="gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep" id="7" data-gr-id="7">front,</g> because <g class="gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="6" data-gr-id="6">apparently</g> this was something the company was hearing a lot about from consumers.

These new braces are slated to be shipped to dealers in the Spring of 2019, so be on the lookout for those.

Conclusion

The SB pistol braces were intended for shooters who were having difficulties, but it seems they have outgrown that initial designation, and have since become a viable option for those who are interested in increasing stability, regardless of any physical difficulties or challenges they may be facing.

SB Tactical provides a one-year warranty on its products, and if there are any defects in materials and/or workmanship, you can contact them for a solution. There is also a 30-day return policy. See their site for details on how to get that done.

Is it a necessity? For some, probably.

For others, it could go either way.

The ability to side-step the SBR tax stamp issue and kind of “stick it” to the ATF (so to speak) in the process – I suppose this is precisely what makes this sort of item such a hit.

It is an altogether highly practical accessory, regardless of legal status, and I have no doubt that SB Tactical will have many more surprises up their sleeve in the months and years to come.

The Draco Gun is the AK-47 of the future. The AK just won't die and it's no wonder with modern variants like these!

Made possibly even more notorious of late, thanks to Draco Malfoy of the Harry Potter series, this is a short article on a weapon which is said to be a favorite among gangsters, rappers, and probably gangsta rappers – the Draco gun. Incidentally, I am more of a Ravenclaw kind of guy. I still don’t fully comprehend why Slytherin would ever be kept on as a Hogwarts House after old Salazar up and quit 1000 years ago! But I digress…

What Is A Draco Gun

In essence, this is a Romanian variant of the famous Soviet rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the 1940s – of course, I am talking about the AK-47 rifle.

This imported miniature Romanian model – which is still being produced today, by the way – comes with a 12.25″ barrel, instead of the standard 16″ of its original Soviet counterpart. ‘Draco’ is actually stamped on the receiver itself.

Also, this AK variant has no shoulder stock, which makes it exceptionally small and compact, AND since it is stockless, it is legally considered a pistol in the United States, which exempts it from bearing that $200 tax stamp. No documentation needed. This gun is primarily shipped to the U.S. and probably other Western countries. But like many AKs and AK variants, it could very well end up in many different hands over time, and serve many purposes. AKs and AK variants can be found all over the world, and it doesn’t looked like that’s about to stop.

Named ‘Draco’ (Latin word meaning ‘Dragon’) by Century Arms who are currently importing it, this gun is a friend of home defenders, firearm enthusiasts, peacekeepers, warriors, weapons collectors, blood traitors and mudbloods alike. Ah well, there I go again. Last one, I promise.

Conclusion

The Draco series of pistols has been around since the turn of the millennium or so. There are varying opinions as to their value on the range, but the AK platform has certainly proven itself over the many years of its existence. There are always those who are going to hate on it and call it a piece of junk. Fair enough, to each his own.

Call it what you will, the Draco series is still going strong. Remember, this is not a battle rifle or a sporting rifle meant for long-range targets. It is a pistol based on the highly-successful AK-47 platform. And as such, it will prove to be great for some and near-useless for others. As always, it is highly subjective. I have no doubt that some AR15 models will be able to surpass the Draco guns in accuracy, etc., but it is all about the shooter.

The Draco series can be used reliably as a home defense weapon. The 7.62mm round is a serious one, and with 30 rounds in a magazine? Yeah. You have a lot of firepower and a winning cartridge.
Outside of home defense purposes – yes, I tend to agree that perhaps it is more for the “tacticool” factor than anything else. Nevertheless, it is a cute little AK, and that has merit no matter what the intended use it.

CZ is one of those unusual gunmakers who are so incredibly popular yet still manage to fly under the radar. The Czech company is by no means a household name, in spite of the fact that they manufacture one of the most widely-circulated handguns in the world, the CZ-75. In fact, the European weapons producer has been pumping out popular guns for nearly 100 years. Furthermore, the impressive CZ team was surprisingly able to succeed even under the harsh Soviet rule. Nevertheless, once the Iron Curtain fell, along with the expiration of the Warsaw Pact, CZ was able to flourish and export their products to a wider fanbase.

Scorpion vz. 61 Machine Pistol

In truth, it wasn’t really until they opened an American offshoot that they really became a world-renowned arms producer. After decades of perfecting their handguns, CZ went to work on revolutionizing the submachine gun back in 2009. It was then that they unleashed the Scorpion Evo 3 and took the industry by storm.

Although the modern CZ Scorpion is still relatively new, its roots go all the way back to the early 1960’s. It was at this time that the Czechs manufactured the Scorpion <g class="gr_ gr_29 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="29" data-gr-id="29">vz</g>. 61, a 7.65mm machine pistol designed for the Czech army and special forces. While they may share a similar distinction, these two CZ weapons are mostly unrelated.

CZ Scorpion Build & Construction

2018 is looking to be a huge year for CZ, especially once they announced five new additions to the Scorpion EVO line. To make things even better, CZ-USA diversified the Scorpion collection like you wouldn’t believe. Besides for pistols and submachine guns, the prospering gunmaker has also created a few truly remarkable Scorpion EVO Carbines. While these new models stay true to the basic Scorpion format, CZ is offering new and improved features such as flash cans, updated finishes, and folding braces.

What I really loved about the new Scorpion’s build was how innovative it was. For example, CZ outfitted these bad boys with polymer upper and lower receivers but decided to stick with all steel parts. Even more impressive is how ergonomic these carbines and submachine guns are.

CZ Scorpion with Faux Suppressor

Furthermore, some of the new models feature SilencerCo faux suppressors or KAK flash can muzzle devices. These new and inventive components effectively boost control, redirect the gun’s gasses and noise forward, upgrade aesthetics, and improve overall reliability.

One of the more interesting components on the Scorpion Carbine was the folding stock. It was sturdy, easy to use, but definitely more basic when compared to its competitors. Nevertheless, it works just fine and does feature a comfortable rubber buttpad and adjustable length of pull. Similarly, the carbine has a pretty interesting handle configuration.

CZ Scorpion Folding Stock

The large and flared grip is kind of ugly but does give pretty good grip support. Unfortunately, because of its large grip surface and ambidextrous controls, the safety toggle can cause some discomfort. The next thing you’ll notice is the European-style mag release. Although I’ve never been a fan of these, this one is actually tolerable thanks to its ability to be pressed by the trigger finger.

Because CZ wanted Scorpion Carbine owners to be able to accessorize, they integrated M-LOK attachment points at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions on its fiber-reinforced polymer frame. Plus, they also added a full-length Picatinny rail on top attached to the receiver.

CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Carbine FDE

Between these two setups, there are countless accessory configurations you can choose to attach lasers, lights, and what have you. To make it even sweeter, CZ added integrated ambidextrous sling mounts, saving you precious space on the handguard.

Although the carbine Scorpion offers all of these upgrades, they were outfitted with one of the best default sight systems I’ve ever seen. CZ-USA attached fully-adjustable aluminum sights on both sides that are sure to impress. In addition to being windage-adjustable, the rear sight has four aperture sight options to give the shooter incredible versatility. Moving up front, this elevation-adjustable sight features glare-reducing serrations.

ST Kinetics CPW

Like the carbine, the CZ-USA semi-automatic pistol is insanely versatile and just flat out amazing. In fact, these models are incredible CQB firearms comparable to legendary weapons like the Uzi, FN P90, KRISS Vector, and the ST Kinetics CPW. To make these groundbreaking PDWs, CZ incorporated 7.75” barrels, ambidextrous controls, swappable non-reciprocating charging handles, four Picatinny rails, and even adjustable trigger reaches.

CZ Scorpion Mags

The best part about the Scorpions’ mags is their high-capacities, including 10, 20, and 30 round options. While these Double stack polymer mags may not be the most durable, they are super affordable and surprisingly reliable. Additionally, because the magazine wells are flared, it’s fast and easy to load and reload the Scorpion.

CZ Scorpion Performance & Operation

The CZ-USA Scorpion blowback-operated semi-autos are a true pleasure to shoot. No matter how you decide to use your Scorpion, you know that you can trust it no matter what. These highly-rated carbines and pistols are incredibly user-friendly and easy to use, especially considering their manageable 9mm cartridge. As much as I enjoyed the submachine gun models, it’s hard to beat a carbine.

CZ Scorpion EVO 3

I love the extra velocity offered by these guns, not to mention the significantly reduced recoil and muzzle rise. I was also really impressed by how easy follow-up shots were, even on the pistols variants. While there are so many factors to consider in a new gun, it’s crucial to never overlook the trigger. That being said, I was more than happy with the CZ Scorpion triggers. Although it took me some time to get accustomed to them, I can’t complain about a 7.5 lb. average trigger pull.

Accessories for the CZ Scorpion

I have to say that these firearms are more than effective without adding any attachments and accessories. Nevertheless, CZ left the door open for all kinds of tactical upgrades and aftermarket options. If you’re looking to add an optic to your Scorpion, you can’t go wrong with an Aimpoint, EOTech, or Trijicon. Furthermore, because the Scorpion is such a tactical masterpiece, many users tend to attach lights and lasers.

I’m a huge fan of combination accessories so it’s no surprise that I highly recommend the Crimson Trace CMR-206 Rail Master Universal – This is one of the top-rated affordable pistol accessories on the market ($120) that can give you a major tactical advantage. Lastly, although CZ currently markets Scorpion models with great muzzle devices and faux suppressors, nothing beats a real-deal firearm suppressor. While you may not think that a 9mm pistol caliber gun needs a suppressor, try a SilencerCo Osprey and I guarantee you won’t regret it.

Beretta has been developing some of the best firearms in the world for roughly 500 years and they’ve shown no signs of slowing down. Although not a brand-new release, the CX4 (released in 2003) is representative of the head of steam build-up by Berreta. The CX4 Storm Carbine, that is; this thing of beauty is anything but ordinary. Based on pure appearance and aesthetic alone the gun is a joy – shooting it brings even more untold enjoyment. The CX4 is less than twenty years old but has already found its way into the hearts of law enforcement, personal defense shooters, and competition shooters alike. There is so much to talk about with this gun, so let’s not waste any time.

Beretta CX4 Storm

Beretta CX4 Storm Carbine Specs

(90.8 oz.).
• Sight Radius: 12.9”.
• MSRP: $849.99.

Beretta CX4 Storm Carbine Build

Besides for the CX4’s beautiful aesthetics, this carbine also features an impressive build. Not only are nearly all of the CX4’s components ambidextrous, many are also adjustable. Besides for making left-handed shooters happy, this gives the Beretta a custom-feel. The Italian company also designed the gun to be highly modular – most parts can be switched quickly, easily, and without tools. Additionally, besides for chambering several different cartridges, the CX4 also accepts magazines from the Beretta 90-series and PX4 handguns.

Beretta CX4 Storm Build

One of the best features on these carbines is their sight system. The combination of the adjustable front sight and aperture rear sight offer quick target acquisition/alignment. I also found that these sights enabled me to stay on target while changing mags. One of the most important factors in owning a firearm is keeping it clean and in order to facilitate that, the CX4 has a chrome-line barrel. This helps minimize corrosion and just makes the gun less of a pain to clean. That being said, I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to maintain your firearm.

To put it simply, the CX4 is the perfect balance of a pistol and rifle. By shooting like a rifle and handling like a pistol, this carbine is the perfect choice for shooters of all experiences. Although I mentioned it earlier, I can’t stress enough how versatile this Beretta is. The fact that most of its components can be reversed plus its simple takedown make the CX4 a dream.

Beretta CX4 Storm Carbine Shooting & Performance

After examining the Beretta CX4’s build, it’s no wonder that it shoots extraordinarily accurately. To ensure its accuracy, the Italian company incorporated a cold-hammer-forged barrel and it does not disappoint. The uniquely designed carbine features the best parts of both pistols and rifles while providing the shooter with easy and comfortable shooting experience. One of my favorite components of the CX4 is its adjustable length of pull. As a shooter from Pennsylvania, I find myself shooting in all types of conditions so I was happy to see that this gun can adjust accordingly. For instance, whether hunting in December with a big jacket or target shooting in May in a T-shirt, the CX4 can adjust accordingly.

In order to make their carbine even more precise, Beretta designed the CX4 with astoundingly low recoil. And we can’t forget about the sights; the factory installed sights are some of the best you’ll find on a brand new rifle/carbine. The adjustable front sight and aperture rear sight make precision shooting faster and easier than ever. Overall, the Beretta CX4 is not only extremely accurate and easy to use, it’s also a real pleasure to shoot.

Beretta CX4 Storm Carbine Magazines & Accessories

The CX4 is a highly versatile firearm. Its ability to fire several size cartridges and mags makes it ideal for multi-purpose shooters. The Beretta carbine flawlessly accepts full-size Beretta 92-series and PX4 magazines and comes with two well-made 10-round mags and a magazine loading tool. Because the CX4 can handle 92 Series mags, there are extended mag options such as 20 or 30 rounds.

Beretta CX4 Storm Accessories

Although I’ve already discussed the CX4’s build and performance, I haven’t even told you the best part. These carbines come with a full-length aluminum Picatinny rail for mounting optics of your choice for a custom-shooting platform. As if it wasn’t impressive enough already, the CX4 acts like a blank canvas just waiting to be painted. The top rail is ideal for mounting red dot sights and assorted optics and the retractable rail extending from the fore-end is great for throwing on a tact-light. If that’s not enough for you, users can also deck out their CX4 with additional rails on the sides and bottom of their Beretta.

With all of these rails, the CX4’s aftermarket options are nearly endless! For starters, my go-to accessory has got to be a good foregrip and the Beretta-made CX4 Storm 4 position folding grip is a great choice. Many employ a tactical flashlight, and I highly recommend the OV-2 LED light. Although it can go for around $300, it’s a great light that is durable, effective, and comes with a whole package of related tools and equipment. Last but not least is one of my favorite additions to a carbine, and that’s a laser sight. The LaserMax UNI-MAX-B is arguably the best aftermarket option for the CX4s. It’s not only high powered and extremely rugged, it’s also as small as a matchbox, so it won’t take up too much real estate.

Beretta CX4 Storm vs. Kriss Vector vs. Kel-Tec Sub 2000

Carbines are really great guns, especially the Beretta CX4 Storm, but how does it compare to similar models? After doing some digging, I came across only two other carbines which came close to the Beretta. The American-made Kriss Vector and Kel-Tec Sub-2000 are both solid alternatives to the CX4, but I wouldn’t necessarily place them in the same tier as the CX4. They are very reliable, durable, and accurate weapons, but all things considered, the Beretta carbine takes the cake. In my subjective opinion, it is a far more attractive gun than these two competitors are to boot.

Kriss Vector (Left), Kel-Tec Sub 2000 (Right)

With that being said, it obviously isn’t all about looks. When it comes to their versatility, the Kriss and Kel-Tec were almost as impressive as the CX4 Storm. All three of these guns can chamber several different mags and cartridges. However, there were features of these guns which really stood out to me: The Kel-Tec Sub2k’s unparalleled lightweight build (4 lbs.) and the Vector’s massive range in length and weight depending on the model, ammo, stock, etc. These are great options to have, but the Beretta is the clear winner.

Conclusion

In my experience shooting and reviewing guns, very few have left a lasting impression the way the Beretta CX4 did. After just a few mags, it was clear that this was no ordinary carbine; Beretta developed the CX4 impeccably while offering endless options for accessories. These details along with the fact that it can handle several types of mags and rounds makes it clear why it’s become a favorite among all types of shooters. Although I’ve heard some complaints about the CX4 Storm’s price, I find it to be more than reasonable when you consider that it is a top-shelf firearm and arguably the best in its class. So what are you waiting for … go out and try it for yourself –you won’t be disappointed!

For around 500 years, the Italian weapons manufacturer Beretta has been a leading producer of top-grade firearms. The ARX160 represents yet another great masterpiece in the collection. These rifles began as a major modern upgrade of their Beretta AR70/90 predecessor, used in the Italian Armed Forces. Beretta marketed the tactical training rifle as the younger brother of the powerhouse ARX 100 (which we’ll discuss more below). The ARX160 was originally designed in 2008 as a military assault rifle for the Italian Armed Forces, and was later modified for civilian use in carbine and pistol variants.

Beretta realized that they had struck gold with their design which is why they quickly modified the ARX160. In this article, we are going to be focusing primarily on what’s available for us noncombatants. Eventually, they even took it a step further and developed the ARX200, which is a derivative of the military version of the 160. Beretta knew immediately how successful this weapon could be, especially once the Italian Military ordered over 30,000 within the first few years. Besides for its popularity, the ARX160 has also seen a rise in service around the Middle East and neighboring countries. Let’s get down to it and see how impressive the Beretta ARX 160 really is.

After just one look at the ARX160, you’ll notice that it’s not your run of the mill rifle/carbine. For starters, it’s one of the best looking carbines I’ve ever seen; it’s sleek, sexy, and intimidating. Its collapsible and folding stock gives it a maximum overall length of just 36.2 inches. This telescopic stock enables the user to adjust the length of its pull at the touch of a button. I grew up sharing guns with my brother who is a lefty, so I saw firsthand the frustrations a southpaw can face with a firearm.

Luckily, Beretta hooked up the ARX160 with serious ambidextrous controls, including a two-position safety, mag release, and cocking handle. One of my favorite features of these guns is their factory installed, four Picatinny rails, which open the door for tons of accessories (which we’ll discuss more at length below). In my experience shooting Beretta’s, I’ve never experienced any issues with their performance. The Italian company has always prided itself with their quality control, and the ARX guns attest to that fact. Their built-to-last durable components are constructed from high-grade European steel and techno-polymers. Another great feature is the simple mechanics in the 160, which make take down and reassembly a breeze. Guns like these, especially which often experience high volume shooting, require serious cleaning regularly.

Check out our overview of gun cleaning and care, but for this gun, I’d probably go with an aerosol CLP like Ballistol. Although most people tend to load their 160’s with accessories, it’s a pleasure to know that the default sight system is no joke. The adjustable flip-up sights make quick shooting effortless.

The ARX160 handles well. With Beretta’s installation of several ambidextrous controls, operating a rifle has never been easier. Although I’ve always been partial to Rimfire weapons, I know that many people don’t trust them. That being said, the ARX160’s accuracy is spot on and dependable. At 50 yards, the average shooter should be able to shoot within 1 ½” groups consistently.

I fired the 160 right out of the box and I was immediately impressed. The flip-up sights are a great, but the real magic is in the rear diopter sight which offers supremely quick and accurate target acquisition. I also found the tactical sling swivels to be a great addition, allowing the shooter to fire and carry in a variety of positions. Nearly all of the features in the ARX are meant to facilitate a fun shooting experience; give it one try and you’ll fall in love immediately. I forgot to mention before that Beretta threw on a flash suppressor, which can do wonders when shooting in low light environments.

Beretta ARX160 Magazines & Accessories

Beretta ARX160 Accessories, Magazine

When talking about the magazines on the ARX160, you have to be aware of the only major drawback to the .22 LR semi-automatic rifles, which is their factory-supplied, five-round magazine. Having to reload after a half a dozen rounds is a chore, so do yourself a favor and opt for one of their higher capacity mags. Beretta offers upgrades with 15-, 10-, or even 20-round mags available for the civilian market (I think you may even be able to get a 30 round mag if you know where to look). Nevertheless, the mag systems on the ARX160 work great; there are mag releases on both sides of the receivers and require a slight push for release.

If you like attachments, then you’ll be thrilled to hear that the ARX 160 has FOUR Picatinny rails, which leaves tons of options open for accessories. Before we get to the rails, the first aftermarket option you’ll want is a bigger magazine. Once you got that, you may want to check out scopes. The Nikon 3x9x40 Prostaff is always a good choice, but a lot of that depends on what type of shooting you’ll be doing. I’d also recommend the Bushnell TRS-32; I’ve always loved Bushnells and I recommend them often. Check out our sights and scopes overview to learn more.

A great place to check out a full range Beretta accessories is on their online catalog. One of the attachments which stood out to me was their ITAL-A Inline Tactical Aiming Laser. This cool gadget will cost you a pretty penny but with the durable and compact design, plus the cutting edge tech, it’s understandable why. One of the most common additions people make to the ARX160 is to hook it up with the Beretta Vertical Grip.

For a very affordable $24, I don’t see any reason to not add the extra stability to your shot. I’ve also seen some long range shooters add a barrel shroud to the 160, but I really don’t think it’s worth the money or added weight. Nonetheless, the mere fact that the ARX160 is so easily accessorized is one of the greatest features that Beretta could have possibly engineered.

M4 Carbine Rifle

Comparing the Colt M4 to the Beretta ARX160 is not so simple considering they both are offered in military and civilian models. Nevertheless, comparisons have been made ever since they’ve been around; in fact, the U.S. military was looking to possibly replace the M4 with the 160 as their primary infantry weapon. The government began the United States Army Individual Carbine competition –which the ARX did incredibly well in –but the competition was cancelled before a winning weapon was crowned champion. This was after the M4 had already replaced the M16; I recommend checking out our M16 vs. M4 comparison to see how much of an upgrade it really was.

In general, the M4 is a more expensive and shorter firearm compared to the ARX 160, but the two are more alike than they are different. Both of these weapons feature the highly favorited telescoping stock plus many other characteristics. The fully stocked assault versions are both capable of attaching tons of accessories including grenade launchers, which made them great options for the military.

Overall, I think the ARX160 has a better set of sights and a more reliable accuracy, but there is something about the Colts that are just so tempting. I think the main reason that the M4 has been able to stand its ground with the Army is because of its proven track record. It withstood the test of the treacherous terrains and conditions of the battlefields in Afghanistan, so if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Beretta ARX160 vs. M&P 15-22

M&P 15-22 Sport

Another great firearm which I’ve seen compared to the ARX 160 is the Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22 Sport. This slim and durable semi-auto blow back rifle is something to behold. The S&W’s shorter and lighter polymer build makes it one of the easiest tactical sporting rifles/carbines to handle, even more than the Beretta. The most notable advantage that the ARX160 has in terms of handling is its insane ambidextrous abilities and telescoping stock. Nevertheless, the 6-position CAR stock on the M&P also gives it a truly customized feel.

To add to the personal feel of the Smith and Wesson, they added the Magpul signature M-LOK system onto the handguard plus a 2-inch M-LOK rail panel which offer quick and easy customization. That being said, this tremendous ability of the S&W is only surpassed by the astounding personalization capabilities of the ARX160.

Beretta ARX160 vs. ARX 100

Beretta ARX 100

I was recently asked how the ARX160 compares to its “big brother,” the ARX100. The most notable difference between these two guns is that the 160 is a Rimfire rifle while the 100 is a centerfire. Furthermore, while the 100 chambers 5.56 NATO rounds, the Rimfire 160 fires .22 LR. The most significant difference then boils down to price and power of the ammunition. Both of these Beretta’s have reliable accuracy, but the 100 might of the upper hand considering that it’s a centerfire. Although it may take a few mags to get used to the shape and feel of these guns, they are incredibly easy and fun to shoot.

One of the biggest differences between them is actually the easiest to fix –the annoying 5 round magazine shipped with ARX 160 can be easily replaced by a 20 round mag (the 100 comes with a 30 round mag). When it comes down to it, these are as close to identical as you can get; so the choice comes down to your preference of ammo. These are two great tactical weapons with the Beretta reputation to back them up.

In 2013, SIG Sauer set out to design and manufacture one of their most ambitious creations – a gas-operated submachine gun, chambered in 9X19mm. A new generation of MP5-style guns, if you will. SIG’s team was successful in their endeavor, and after many tests and trials, the SIG MPX was finally introduced in 2015.

Here are some of its specs. For this review, we will be discussing the MPX in its pistol form (MPX-P). This firearm has several variants, and we will mention some of them later on.

SIG Sauer MPX Design

This thing is built a lot like an AR, and that is no accident. The AR-platform is one of the most recognizable and widely-used designs in modern firearm history. The bolt catch, safety button, and magazine release are all styled in AR fashion, and to make it even better, SIG has made this platform completely ambidextrous. I say “better”, though to be fair there are those who are not too fond of ambi-controls. This thing has a fully closed and locked rotating bolt mechanism, which means it can a lot of punishment and stay operational, without malfunctioning for even a split-second.

The MPX has a full-length Picatinny rail on top, and it comes with flip-up iron sights. There is also a KeyMod rail on the forend. The rear of the gun also has a small Picatinny rail, allowing you to mount the stock or brace of your choice on the back. Some attachments require paperwork, so make sure to comply with your local laws and regulations. The MPX’s grip is made of polymer.

The place where the MPX varies greatly from the AR-platform is its operating system. Instead of an AR-like direct impingement system or MP5-esque blowback system, the MPX utilizes a short-stroke piston system, and this is part of what helps the gun be much safer, much cleaner, and much more reliable than similar submachine guns.

Sig Sauer MPX PCC

SIG Sauer MPX Performance

The MPX looks great and also shoots great. The 30-round magazine is plenty, and it is an accurate and precise weapon right out of the box. The MPX is meant to be a close-encounter personal defense weapon, and it does its job in the best possible way.

The one thing I saw as a shortcoming – one which many will agree with me on – is the factory trigger. It is not the best, to say the least. I am not such a picky trigger squeezer, normally. That means that if I noticed its choppiness, you can bet your bottom dollar that there are many out there who replaced that trigger as soon as they cut the tape on the box.

As for the actual shooting experience – I have no complaints. It shoots like a SIG should. It took the boys at SIG a long while to release the MPX. There were problems and setbacks, but they got through them and released the MPX-P sometime after the standard one came out.

MPX Mags

The MPX magazine (manufactured exclusively for SIG by Lancer) is currently designated only for the MPX. There are Gen I mags and Gen II mags, corresponding with Gen I and II of the MPX itself. These magazines are expensive, and right now they are only available through SIG. The magazines are polymer, and they come in 10-, 20- and 30-round options.

There are some conflicting stories regarding compatibility or lack of it, but Gen II magazines should work on Gen I MPX guns. They did for me, anyway, when I was at the range. If your experience was different, or if you want to be sure of what you should do, simply get in touch with SIG. Better safe than sorry. Their reps know more than I do, that’s for sure.

Safety and Sights

The safety, as previously mentioned, is like a standard AR fire selector. It is ambidextrous and proves to be a bit too big for some shooters. It really does depend on the size of your hands, and on what you are used to shooting.

Firing a big gun, one that is actually meant to be a submachine gun can be a little awkward at first – especially with no stock to speak of. At any rate, the safety works fine, and its inner mechanism makes it one of the safest SMGs out there.

Sig Sauer MPX PSB

The sights on the MPX are factory iron flip-ups, but the Picatinny rail means that those will probably serve as backup sights (highly recommended) and that a more reliable optic will be mounted onto the weapon. Take your pick of red dot, laser, flashlight, and get to it.

I mean, sure, you could stick with the flip-ups, but that Picatinny rail is there for a reason, so you may as well use it. Mounting a red dot or other optic is the best way to take advantage of this firearm, and it allows you to remain armed and ready in the day or night, and increase the gun’s range and accuracy.

Accessories

Accessories vary from one version to the next. The different models allow the user to change the stock configuration, barrel length, and calibers, and also make use of braces, suppressors, muzzle brakes, flash hiders, and other attachments.

Part of what makes this such a great gun is that these adjustments and alterations can be done in the field, on the fly. This is a highly adaptable weapon, and it has the ability to change according to mission specifications.

SIG Sauer MPX For Civilian Use

The original MPX came fully automatic, so when the question of civilian use came into the picture, the semi-automatic versions were obviously the way to go. Civilians have their choice of the SIG MPX Carbine, Carbine FDE (flat dark earth), Pistol, PSB (pistol stabilizing brace), PSB FDE, and SBR (short-barreled rifle) models.

SIG Sauer MPX SBR Variant

The SBR variant is another popular choice. Gun laws in the U.S. are weird sometimes, no doubt about it. In most cases, possession of an SBR requires a special ATF tax stamp. Without it, you could get in trouble with federal authorities.

The MPX SBR comes in a 4.5-inch barrel or 8-inch barrel configuration. The gun comes with a single 30-round polymer magazine, folding sights, collapsible stock, polymer grip, MIL-SPEC trigger, carbon steel barrel, and hard coat anodized receiver.

MSRPs:

4.5″ Barrel: $1957

8″ Barrel: $2123

MPX Copperhead

SIG unveiled the newest addition to their popular MPX lineup at the 2019 SHOT Show: the Copperhead model. Like others of the MPX line, it’s somewhat unorthodox in design and appearance, and it certainly deserves a mention.

Some history: In 2018, the US Army requested manufacturers to submit a subcompact weapon prototype – one which was 9mm, Picatinny rail-topped, selective fire, and sound-suppressed. SIG submitted the MPX, and this is the civilian version of that weapon.

Some specs:

Caliber: 9mm

Length: 14.5″

Barrel length: 3.5″

Weight: 4.5 lbs

Capcity: 10, 20, or 30 rounds (MPX mag)

MSRP: $1,835

It is gas-piston operated, with controls which highly resemble an AR-style weapon, and a darn-tan copper-ish color. It features a different pistol grip than previous versions, dual recoil springs with metal retainer, a dual-position telescopic brace, one-piece upper receiver, along with an integrated muzzle brake and flash hider.

Sig Sauer MPX Copperhead

To quote a gun-forum visitor: “It’s big, heavy, and ugly. I’ll take two.”

MPX Availability

The MSRP of the various MPX models ranges from $1852 – $2152. These are the starting prices, as listed on SIG’s website. As always, the actual street price will probably be lower.

This is a gun which will not fit everyone’s budget. Some may even go so far as to call this a luxury gun. It could be, sure. But that is true to all SIG firearms, to some extent. They cost more, and they always have. No getting around that.

This is a piece of hardware that is meant to save the lives of you and your loved ones. If the price is too high, there are always more affordable options. Alternatively, you could wait for a significant sale to cross your path. Those happen a lot, so keep your eyes and ears open.

MPX variants are available online and offline, in gun shops and firearms shows or conventions. SIG also work with specifically authorized dealers, so if you want to find the closest one to you, use their website’s resources! You will undoubtedly be able to find a good deal on one, somewhere.

Conclusion

The SIG MPX submachine gun, whether in fully-automatic or semi-automatic configuration, is a gun which has been many years in the making. It is not the very first submachine gun to utilize a gas system, but it is definitely the first one to pull it off so beautifully and flawlessly. And in 9X19mm Parabellum, too!

Overall, it is a great weapon. I am glad I had the chance to try it out in its pistol configuration, but let’s be honest – it is the full auto ‘beast’ configuration that seems to be the most appealing, at least range-wise. Shooting anything in full auto mode is a lot of fun, but it eats up ammo like there’s no tomorrow.

As far as I am concerned, the only true purpose of an individual with a fully automatic weapon is providing proper cover fire. Remember, this is a pistol. A big one, yes, but a pistol nonetheless. And like a pistol, it is meant for relatively short ranges. It is not a battle rifle or machine gun, it is a gun.

So, if you want it – and can afford it – go for it! The MPX is guaranteed to be one hell of an addition to your arsenal. And if you have any extra cash, send one my way, too!
