One things we can say for a certainty about Aimpoint History and Products is that they are unique. In 1974, a group of Swedish entrepreneurs got together. They had one goal in mind: to come up with better sighting technology for European hunters. The company called Aimpoint was founded by the late Gunnar Sandberg, who died in 2007. His son, Per, is currently the CEO of Aimpoint. Judging by what Aimpoint has been doing since Sandberg’s death, it can be said without a doubt that Per definitely takes after his father.

Not Just For Hunters Anymore

This company may have started with hunters in mind, but in the course of its many years, the company has expanded. It now caters to civilian, police, and military forces around the world.

Aimpoint is one of the largest and most well-known manufacturers of red dot sights in the world. Their products have proven themselves in combat as well as competition, and they have been well received by shooters from all walks of life, for over four decades. Quite a record.

Their first product, the Aimpoint Electronic, is supposedly the first sight to incorporate a light-emitting diode (LED) in its design. This just goes to show how innovative and creative this company and its engineers are. 23 years after its founding, Aimpoint secured its first long-term military contract with the U.S. Armed Forces. The Aimpoint CompM2 model sight was renamed “M68 Close Combat Optic” (CCO), and soldiers were then able to utilize this sight’s amazing capabilities.

The company’s headquarters are still based in Sweden, and it also has a subsidiary in the U.S., with facilities located in Virginia.

All of Aimpoint’s products are non-magnifying, and they are also known as reflector or reflex sights. The company claims their products to be parallax free, but some amount of parallax is usually unavoidable, since we are talking of sights which make use of lenses and mirrors.

Depending on the range and angle, there may be need for parallax correction and compensation, but compared to other products, Aimpoint is certainly ahead of the curve. These sights are based on years of experience and smart engineering, and there is just no beating that.

Part of what makes Aimpoint products so amazing is their ability to function for prolonged periods of time – sometimes years – without the need for battery replacement. By using the proprietary circuit efficiency technology (CET) and advanced circuit efficiency technology (ACET), Aimpoint’s sights are able to perform continuously for thousands and thousands of hours. These systems provide the hunter, combat soldier, or government agent with confidence, and make using the weapon a lot easier and more convenient.

Commercial and Professional Products

Aimpoint’s products are placed in one of two categories: commercial or professional. In other words, one category covers hunting and sport shooting, and the other deals with military and law enforcement use. Other than those two categories, there are also many accessories that can be purchased directly from Aimpoint. These accessories are often designated for use with specific models.

This company’s product line is impressive. In the course of time, with the advent of new technology and manufacturing techniques, some of Aimpoint’s products have been discontinued. Other products have been replaced by superior, more advanced models.

Let’s go a little bit more in-depth, and check out a few of Aimpoint’s most popular sights. This is not a complete review of these products, but merely an overview.

Aimpoint Micro T-1

The Aimpoint Micro T-1 is probably one of the greatest non-magnifying combat optics ever to hit the scene. A magnifier is also a very popular option, but is sold separately.

Aimpoint CompM4 / CompM4s

This was introduced as the successor to the CompM2, and was also adopted by the U.S. Armed Forced. The CompM4 has a total of 16 different LED brightness settings – 7 meant for use with night vision devices, and 9 for use in daytime. The CompM4 uses a single AA battery as its power source, and – according to Aimpoint – this sight will run continuously for 8 years on a single battery, while it is set at its 10th brightness setting.

The M4s has the exact same functionality of the M4, but with a lower battery compartment.

Aimpoint’s H Series

This series of sights is designated for civilian use, and more specifically geared towards the hunting crowd. It includes 4 models: H30S, H30L, H34S, and H34L. These are all red dot reflex sights, which make use of a LED as its source of light. The S and L in the model names refer to ‘short’ and ‘long’.

These sights were launched in 2010, but the origins of this particular line of products go way back. After all, the Aimpoint Company began as a provider of optical solutions for the hunters of Europe. With the release of this amazing line, the company saw the vision of its founders come to fruition. Hunting rifles and shotguns can benefit greatly from these sights, which offer a 2 MOA dot, unlimited eye relief, two-eyes-open shooting, 12 brightness settings, and over 5 years of continuous use on a single 3V lithium CR2032 battery. The H series is not compatible with night vision devices.

Sight Maintenance

Depending on your eyesight, target size, weapon, and ammo, your Aimpoint sight can be used at any range. The dot is not projected on the actual target, but rather exists within the sight itself, thereby making the distance factor into a non-issue.

Always use a soft lens cloth to clean the sight. Never use your fingers. Blow away dirt, and then fog and clean the lens.

When zeroing your weapon, windage and elevation are adjustable. Don’t continue adjusting once you encounter resistance. If you still need to zero, check the rail and the sight’s alignment.

The front lens of all Aimpoint products is tilted. This is done in order to achieve the best possible light transmission with the sight’s LED.

Aimpoint sights require no specific maintenance of any kind, but if you want to get the most of your product, you should:

– Keep the lens covers on when not in use

– Make sure the battery cap and the two adjustment caps are tightened (hand tighten only, according to the manufacturer)

– Wipe and dry the lens as soon as possible, after exposure to any water, snow, mud, or the like.

Accessories And Branded Gear

What about sight accessories or branded gear? Aimpoint also produce and distribute a wide range of both. Some are only for use with certain models, so be sure to buy exactly what you require. More information can be found on Aimpoint’s website.

Warranty And Service

Aimpoint uses high-quality materials, and its manufacturing process is just about flawless. It goes through rigorous tests and quality inspection, to ensure the best possible end product. The result is a grade-A weapon sight, meant to last for many years. The company guarantees that its products will be free from manufacturer defects in materials and / or workmanship, under normal use.

For those who use the sights professionally (e.g. military, law enforcement, competitors), the warranty is for a period of 2 years. Those who make personal use of the sights will have them guaranteed for 10 years. All warranties are from original date of purchase, and are limited to the original owner.

The warranty is valid under normal use, so it will be null and void if the sight has been misused, taken apart, or otherwise tampered with in any way. Aimpoint’s local dealers, as well as its customer service reps, are available to you with any questions you may have on repairs, returns, and even possible upgrades.

In Closing

Aimpoint (“The future in sight”) is synonymous with accuracy and precision. Obviously, your success with any sight or accessory also depends on your own skills as a shooter. Aimpoint’s sights make it easier than ever to improve and hit your mark, whether you are a civilian, government agent, or serviceman.

Looking over Aimpoint’s back catalog and list of currently available products, you can really see how the company has advanced over the years. So many different kinds of optics have been – and are still being – engineered, updated, and upgraded. If you are in need of a red dot sight, Aimpoint is definitely a place to start. Depending on your practical needs and personal taste, you will undoubtedly be able to find the right Aimpoint product for you.

Buying a sight can be a difficult task. There are so many companies and models to choose from. It is worth doing some research – or perhaps more than some – in order to purchase the best possible sight, with the most appropriate configuration.

An Aimpoint sight can do a lot for you and your shooting skills. Once the sight is mounted and zeroed, it can be used to immensely improve your firearm chops. These are extremely rugged sights, and they are designed to perform in the best way possible, even under extremely harsh conditions.

The Aimpoint hunter series scopes have revolutionized hunting. When Aimpoint was founded in the middle of the 1970’s, part of the founders’ goal was to provide better aiming solutions for the European hunting community. Aimpoint has come a long way and in this Aimpoint hunter series review I’ll discuss the pro’s and con’s of this amazing hunting sight series.

hunting is a way of life

Aimpoint’s innovations date back to 1975 when it introduced the first light-emitting diode (LED) red dot reflex sight called the Electronic. The rest, as they say, is history. The company grew, and it went on to release many excellent products over the years like the Aimpoint Comp M3 and Comp M4 . It was always popular with shooters of all kinds, but its big break came in 1997, when Aimpoint was awarded a multi-year military contract, and began working extensively with the United States Armed Forces and NATO.

C is For Cookie, H is for Hunter

weighing in on weight

The Aimpoint Hunter series was launched in 2010. (Side Note: Prior to releasing the Hunter Series Aimpoint came out with the Micro H-1 and H-2 models, also designed with the hunter in mind but much smaller in size). This unique product line includes 4 models: the H30S, H30L, H34S, and H34L. . These sights are all red dot reflex sights, which utilize a light-emitting diode as a source of light. The S and L in the model names refer to ‘short’ and ‘long’, and they vary accordingly.

In a way, the H series saw the vision shared by that small group of 1970’s Swedish entrepreneurs come to be fully realized, with the launching of these sights in 2010. This is a series meant for hunting.

The H sights are meant to be mounted mainly on two different styles of rifles: lightweight or compact is one, and magnum or standard-action is the other. This thing fits on so many different weapons. Whichever hunting rifle (or shotgun) you choose, there will most likely be an H series Aimpoint sight that will be able to be mounted on top of your rail, and deliver the best hunting experience there is.

Many people feel that only a magnifying optic will give you what you need to make a successful shot. Perhaps they have been watching too many Hollywood movies, since in a lot of cases it is the exact opposite which is true. If you try to snag a deer or hog with your 3x magnifier scope – certainly if it is on the move – there is a good chance that it will get away, due to the difficulties of tracking it with a magnifier. What most hunters actually require is a close to mid-range optic, and that is precisely what Aimpoint is all about.

Plus, with the Aimpoint sights, both of your eyes are wide open. This is a big game-changer. There is no need to whittle down your field of vision, and risk losing the animal by trying to “zoom in” on it. With Aimpoint’s red dot sights, you simply place the dot on the target, and fire. That bullet will reach its destination. Sometimes, less is more.

Sight Similarities, Slight Differences

The Hunter series sights share many similarities:

sights and subtles differences

1x magnification

2 minute of angle (MOA) dot reticle

Incompatibility with night vision devices

Unlimited eye relief

12 daylight brightness settings

Use of a single 3V lithium battery, type CR2032

50,000 hours (over 5 years) of continuous-on battery life, when used with a daytime setting

Anti-reflex lens coating, all surfaces and multi-layer

Rugged, high-grade aluminum housing

One area where these sights differ is in regards to their dimensions:

H30S – L 7.7 X W 1.6 X H 1.6 inches

H30L – L 9 X W 1.6 X H 1.6 inches

H34S – L 7.7 X W 1.8 X H 1.8 inches

H34L – L 9 X W 1.8 X H 1.8 inches

There is also a difference in weight:

H30S – 7.9 oz.

H30L – 8.4 oz.

H34S – 8.9 oz.

H34L – 9.3 oz.

These sights do have some weight to them, no doubt. However, it is manageable. It isn’t the type of weight that would cause you to break your back 2 days into a 4-day hunting trip. I feel that if it were something like 12 oz., that would be a weight-size which is more significant. Some scopes and sights reach critical weight classes, and make it inefficient to consider carrying them for prolonged periods of time. Of course, like with every single weapons accessory, it is very much a matter of personal preference and opinion. There are those who choose to carry larger, heavier optics, for their own reasons.

It All Comes Down to the Tubes

Another difference between these sights has to do with their tubing. The H30 duo sports a 30mm tube, while the pair of H34’s features a 34mm tube. Both of these diameters enable the light to be transmitted clearly and efficiently, and they provide a clear, crisp picture when peering through the coated lens.

Most hunters go for the 34mm tube. For that reason, the H34 sights are probably the more popular ones out there. However, if you have the need for a different kind of use, which requires a smaller tube, the H30’s 30mm tube is right there for the taking.

The benefits of a good scope for hunting rifles are numerous. Whether it is for turkeys, gazelles, rabbits, goats, or even more dangerous game like hippos, the Aimpoint Hunter series allows the shooter to concentrate and be situationally aware. This is one of the biggest advantages of the Aimpoint sights. Having both your eyes open means that you are not leaving anything out. You aren’t focusing on the front iron sights or on a reticle that is covering up the entire animal. You bring it up, look through the optic, and that 2 MOA dot will provide you with all of the security and confidence you need.

hunting with friends

The H series is a practical hunting sight. The military-grade ruggedness means that you can put it through a lot, and it will still keep on trucking like it’s nobody’s business. The ministry of defense and the U.S. military have tested the Aimpoint sights again and again, before approving them as a standard issue for the troops. That same ruggedness is part of the Hunter series.

It doesn’t matter what the weather is, who you are, where you are, or how proficient you are with a hunting rifle. Aimpoint’s H series makes it easy for anyone to get on the target and make the shot count. Like all other Aimpoint optics, the H series is parallax free (no compensation required), has no potentially-damaging lasers, is made of no hazardous materials, and is built to stay on and serve the shooter for many years.

shooting from afar

So, to sum up a little:

Shooting game up to 200 yards away? The Aimpoint Hunter sight may be exactly what you need. There are many different types of sights and scopes so do your research, see what you need (not what people are pushing you to buy), and if you are able to get your hands on one and try it out, I urge you to do so. With a first-hand experience, you will see just how great these sights are.

The Aimpoint Comp M2 is (or rather, was) one of Aimpoint’s most successful products. It is a sight which has been issued to many Special Forces units, around the world. The CompM2 was made for military and law-enforcement, and when it was released in the year 2000, it instantly became the standard against which all other red dot sight are measured. The Comp series was first introduced in 1993, and its many models are considered to be the cream of the crop of red dot sights.

Special Forces Units

The CompM2 model was discontinued in 2012, but for over a decade it was the go-to optic for many infantry soldiers, government agents, law-enforcement officers, as well as civilian hunters and competitive shooters. It is a product which everyone loved, right off the bat, and it is still being used by many. It is a reflex sight, with a light-emitting diode (LED) functioning as its light source. The M2’s 4 minute of angle (MOA) dot was the most accurate and versatile reticle around, and this did not go unnoticed by militaries and government agencies.

Discontinued But Not Out of Use!

There are about 300,000 units of CompM2 which are still in service. Even though this particular model has been discontinued, Aimpoint still provides service for those who wish to take advantage of this excellent sight. Aimpoint still certainly stands behind it, and there is no reason why it shouldn’t.

When the CompM2 was used by the United States Armed Forces (Army, Air Force, Special Forces), it was classified as the M68CCO (close combat optic). This thing was the real deal, ready for use at the drop of a hat, under any condition, and in any kind environment. The CompM3 and CompM4 continue to improve on the M2’s foundation.

The CompM2 is compatible with every generation of night vision devices, and Aimpoint’s then-new Circuit Efficiency Technology (CET) meant that battery-life shot way up, and left the competition in the dust. This is one of Aimpoint’s serious advantages. Later, the Advanced Circuit Efficiency Technology (ACET) was introduced, and battery-life was extended even further. Thanks to this highly-advanced technology, the CompM3 and CompM4’s battery-life can be measured in years, not mere hours or days.

I’ve Got My Sight On You

close quarter battle

The sight’s reticle is a 4 MOA dot. At long distances, it may appear a bit too large for some shooters. However, for close quarter battle (CQB) scenarios, this sight was a revelation. The red dot provides the shooter with the ability to lift, aim, shoot, and make the shot count. It is no wonder that this sight was issued to Special Ops in NATO and the U.S. Armed Forces.

Having to deal with combat situations in dense urban areas, means having to change the way you approach battle. This isn’t the jungles of Vietnam or the shores of France, and it isn’t Berlin in 1944-5, either. This is a different story, altogether. We’re talking points of entry, room-to-room searches, apartment building takeovers, hostage situations, and the like. Speed, efficiency, and accuracy are always a part of combat, but those words seem to take on a whole new meaning, when you are dealing with CQB.

For these reasons, the CompM2 was one of the greatest sights that Aimpoint ever released. It had a nice run, before it was replaced with the M3 and the M4. Those two models are still being produced and used by civilians and security personnel, worldwide. The 4 MOA, which was standard with the CompM2, became a choice with the later models. Shooters can now opt for a 2 MOA dot or a 4 MOA dot, depending on the kind of shooting that is anticipated.

If you are looking for a non-magnifying sight, which provides you with quick and easy target acquirement, the Comp series is the way to go. What is great about the Comp line, is that it is made to fit perfectly with Aimpoint’s 3xMAG magnifier optic. It is meant to be mounted behind your chosen sight, and it gives you a closer look at anything you want, with 3x magnification. This opens the sight up for long distance shooting, and it is a combination which many shooters take advantage of.

Like all of Aimpoint’s products, the CompM2 is parallax-free – no error-compensation required. The reticle stays in place, even if your eyes move.

Aimpoint’s optics are guaranteed under the company’s limited warranty. Like I said, the company still provides customer service for those who are in need of it. Of course, it is a limited warranty, and more information on the company’s guarantees can be found on Aimpoint’s official website.

Trusting Yourself and Your Weapon

always be prepared

Optics are a weapon accessory which people trust their lives to. If you are about to trust your gear with your life, you need to be 100% sure. You need to be confident in your optic. Of course, it is an electrical accessory. Even though Aimpoint’s products are top-shelf, it is highly-recommended to continue training with back-up iron sights.

It is my opinion that you should never rely completely on an optic, even if you are confident in its abilities. It is always a good idea to continue training with back-up iron sights. You don’t want to get caught in a situation where your optic is down or otherwise malfunctioning, and you are at a loss of what to do.

Part of carrying a weapon – any kind of weapon, but especially lethal ones – is situational awareness. Being aware of what is going on. This is partly why Aimpoint’s sights incorporate two-eyes-open shooting. It gives the shooter a fuller picture, and it helps you stay on target.

Launched in 2005, the Aimpoint Comp M3 was – and still is – one of the greatest red dot reflex sights ever invented, perhaps surpassed only by its successor, the CompM4. The Comp series was first introduced in 1993, and ever since then it has been a favorite with shooters everywhere. This sight has earned the respect of civilians, law-enforcement agencies, and military organizations all over the world.

At the time, Aimpoint created the CompM3 sight primarily for use by police and armed forces. The red dot reticle is projected by use of a light-emitting diode (LED), and unlike laser products or other types of sights, there is no danger to anyone’s eyes.

Aimpoint Comp M3 Rifle

The CompM3 is available in either a 2 minute of angle (MOA) dot or a 4 MOA dot. Depending on the intended use of whichever rifle this sight is to be mounted on, the desired MOA can vary. For longer distances, the smaller MOA is better. If you are a soldier, who is expecting to engage targets further away, say at the 100 yard mark or more, you don’t want (or need) a large dot taking up your space and complicating your shot.

Aimpoint Comp M3 Rifle

On the other hand, if your rifle is intended for home-defense use (or something similar), the 4 MOA dot is probably the way to go. It provides the best solution for close-quarter battle (CQB) situations. That way, when you pick up your rifle, the dot allows for quick and easy target acquisition.

The M3’s housing is made of strong, top-grade aluminum, and it makes it a highly durable accessory. You can put this thing through a lot of punishment, and it will be up to the trials and challenges of even the harshest of circumstances. It is no wonder that the U.S. Armed Forces have been using Aimpoint products for so many years.

The Aimpoint CompM3 comes with an outer black rubber cover, also available in dark earth. This cover aids in preserving, protecting, and camouflaging your sight.

This sight comes with a 3V battery, and as you can see from the tech specs, the life of this battery can be measured in years, not hours. If there is one thing in which other optics companies like EOTech or Trijicon are somewhat lacking, it is battery life. The absolute last thing you want is for your optic to fail when you need to take that shot.

Aimpoint’s (nearly) inexplicable battery-life is part of what makes this company stand out in an optic-flooded aftermarket. Its Advanced Circuit Efficiency Technology (ACET) models, of which the CompM3 is a part of, make sure that you are never left out in the cold. This thing can stay on, continuously, for years. Now THAT is impressive.

Aimpoint Comp M3 Accessories

The Aimpoint CompM3 comes with a replaceable black rubber cover (also available in dark earth). This cover aids in preserving, protecting, and camouflaging your sight. Aimpoint guarantees total satisfaction, and pleasing their customers (and military liaisons) is at the top of their list.

The price of this optic hover around $680, but you can find it for less than that at various places online and offline. It is the price you pay for quality, and it is totally and completely worth it. Having the Aimpoint CompM3 sight on your weapon means that you are ready for anything. Speed, efficiency, durability – these are what make Aimpoint’s sights some of the best in the entire world. It is a sight which (just about) every shooter loves.

Like all of Aimpoint’s products, this sight comes with a guarantee. The warranty for Aimpoint’s sights in either 2 years (professional and competition use), or 10 years (personal use). The materials and craftsmanship are top-notch, and the company stands behind its products with great pride. Should there be something defective with the optic, Aimpoint will repair or replace the item in question.

Aimpoint Comp M3 Army Style

The M3 can be mounted in several ways, and it gives you a lot of flexibility when it comes to additional accessories and what not. The ability to customize your rifle easily is part of why the Comp series in general – and the M3 in particular – is such a hit. It works, it’s solid, it’s rugged, and it gets the job done in the best possible way. Anyone who has ever looked through an Aimpoint Comp-series sight will attest to its simplicity and accuracy.

Many different kinds of accessories are available for the CompM3: lens covers (individual / bikini), various filters for reducing or altogether eliminating reflections brought on by the sun or the sight’s objective lens, spare battery kit, battery cap adjustment screws, and others. Like I said – highly customizable.

Aimpoint Comp M3 History

Aimpoint has been engineering and manufacturing great optics accessories ever since the mid-1970s. They have been awarded numerous military and government contracts, and they have earned each and every one. As a military supplier, the company’s products are constantly under fire – being tested and put through harrowing trials. Aimpoint comes up winning, and we get to win right along with them. Using an Aimpoint product like the CompM3 is knowing that you are using an optic which is battle-proven, and that is saying a lot.

Aimpoint CompM3 Sight

This company is the originator of the red dot sight. It literally revolutionized the worlds of hunting, competition-shooting, security, and self-defense. Not bad for a group of Swedish entrepreneurs, huh? In my opinion, it goes on the list of Sweden’s greatest exports, right alongside their famous meatballs, their Volvos, and their IKEA furniture. Obviously, I also have a soft spot for the Swedish Chef from The Muppets. But that’s a different story altogether…

The Aimpoint Comp M4 sight is in my opinion and in many others’, one of the finest sights ever to be invented. A feature that sets it apart is battery life, and there are a number of other features and specifications that go into making it one of the most celebrated M4 sights ever - quite simply, a monumental achievement from Aimpoint.

The Aimpoint Comp M4 sight is in my opinion and in many others’, one of the finest sights ever to be invented. It is a reflector or “reflex” sight, meaning it is a red dot type of optic. According to Aimpoint, it is the most rugged and most capable sight in their entire catalogue. The Comp product line began in 1993, with the release of the Aimpoint Comp red dot sight. The Comp was meant primarily for handguns, and though that particular model was discontinued in 1999, it went on to spawn many follow-up models.

The CompM4 is one of those follow-ups. It is issued to many infantry soldiers and law enforcement officers. It has proven itself in countless confrontations and military operations all over the world. More than 1 million units of the Comp sight series are still being used today. As optics technology advances even further into the future, Aimpoint is able to harness these technological advantages, shape them, mold them, perfect them – and brings us products which have the ability to reach more types of shooters and weapons-enthusiasts.

With the CompM4 red dot sight from Aimpoint, hitting the target becomes just about the easiest thing in the world (providing, of course, that you are within the appropriate range!). A red dot sight in itself is pretty straightforward, and with the CompM4 there is no room for error – put the dot on the target, and squeeze that trigger.

Launched in 2007, this sight was adopted by the United States Armed Forces. Civilians, law-enforcement officers, and military personnel have been taking advantage of the CompM4’s acute precision and versatility ever since.

This sight features a 2 minute of angle (MOA) dot, for close quarter battle (CQB) as well as longer-distance engagements. The dot is projected by use of a light-emitting diode (LED), so there is no danger to the eyes. (Check out our Trijicon reflex article for a look at another great CQB sight).

Comp M4 Compared to Comp M4s

M4 VS M4s

One feature which really sets this optic apart is its battery life. Not measured in hours, or even days, but in years. This is partially why Aimpoint has such a great reputation. People in and out of uniform rely on these optics to perform when the chips are down. The CompM4 – and the rest of Aimpoint’s sights – is famous for never needing to be shut down. Just leave it on, and carry on with your day-to-day. Should the need arise, simply look into your sight. You will clearly see that red dot, glowing and ready for anything, in your chosen setting of brightness.

The battery compartment is what differentiates the two available CompM4 models – CompM4 and CompM4s. The CompM4 has a high battery compartment, and the M4s compartment has a low one. That is really the only difference between these excellent sights. Seems trivial, but it is one difference which matters. Depending on what other kinds of accessories you have (or plan on having) mounted on your rifle, the location of the battery compartment can be an asset or a liability.

As for the optic itself – the coating on the lenses allow for the clearest, most unparalleled transmission of light. You see a nice, sharp picture, and with the both-eyes-open technique it is essential that the picture is as true as can be. This is where you can tell the difference between a cheap optic and a quality one. Ultimately, it is all about the picture. It needs to be crisp and the Aimpoint CompM4 delivers just that.

The Price of Quality

Getting the Job Done!

Obviously, this comes at a price. These sights are expensive, but there is no reason why they should not be. You can’t expect to plunk down $50 or even $100, and get a high quality scope or sight. If you want quality and ingenuity which is built to last, you need to shell out some money. But it isn’t as if this money is going down the drain. Not by a long shot (see what I did there?).

This is a weapon’s optic we’re talking about here, and – whether you are an ordinary civilian or a uniform-wearing servicemen – you are purchasing it for a reason. Self-defense, tactical needs, hunting, competition shooting, training. When you buy an optic, you need to be able to count on it, and that is why we invest these amounts in our accessories.

This sight has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of around $900, and you will probably be able to find it for less than that, if you shop around a bit before purchasing.

The CompM4 fits perfectly with the 3xMag magnifier (also from Aimpoint), and there are those who make it a point to have them both on the weapon, working as one. Aimpoint is one of the best sight/scope options out there, and their 3x magnifier is used by many shooters.

Latest and Greatest

The Aimpoint CompM4s is the latest version of the U.S. Army´s M68CCO. The low battery compartment means that there is less clutter in your field of vision. However, each sight has its advantages. For some shooters, having a lower battery compartment gets in the way of manipulating their magnifier. It really is a question of personal preference and ease of use.

Both the CompM4 and the CompM4s are customizable. The standard mount and vertical spacer can be altered, all depending on the mission at hand. These sights are versatile and up for any task. Like all Aimpoint sights, these are parallax-free, built from durable materials. They are built for harsh environments and weather conditions, they are reliable, and they can help reduce the amounts of ammo used in training.

quality sights since 1974

Aimpoint has been making quality sights since 1974. It released its legendary Electronic sight in 1975, and has not stopped wowing us with each new product they bring into the market. With so many aftermarket products available for so many weapons, it isn’t easy to stay on top of things, and to be fresh and innovative. But, Aimpoint keeps proving itself worthy of its many titles, awards, and military contracts.

An Aimpoint sight is guaranteed for 2 years (professional and competition use) or 10 years (personal use). If necessary, Aimpoint will repair the sight, and then send it back to the owner, free of charge. Just remember – if you happen to need customer service, remove any and all mounts or accessories which are not part of the original product

Aim well, hit hard.

The difference between EOtech XPS2 and 512 is minute. These two sights are similar in a lot of ways. They were engineered years apart, but they still hold a lot of the same advantages for the shooter. Why is that? Because EOTech got it right, right off the bat. The company has been producing holographic weapon sights since the mid-90s, and the XPS series was introduced around 2010.

The classic 512 HWS

The 512 – which is still their most popular, widely-used not night-vision-compatible sight – is intended for close- to mid-range shooting. The XPS2 is also intended for such distances, but there are several crucial differences between them.

No Two Sights are the Same

The major differences between these two excellent sights are:

Size –

The XPS2 is significantly shorter, which allows the shooter to mount other accessories with greater ease. Because of its slimmer build, it also weighs less.

Battery life –

With the XPS2, you’re looking at a loss of about 400 hours, compared to the 512’s lithium battery life. The XPS2 utilizes a single (albeit powerful) battery. This causes the optic to be shorter, but last significantly less time than the 512. Furthermore, AA batteries are a lot more common, and this can be a huge advantage. On the other hand, as one forum-poster eloquently put it: I would not trust my life with anything using AA. I suppose it is a judgement call.

Reticle pattern –

The 512 has only one available model:

512-0 – 65 minute of angle (MOA) ring and 1 MOA dot reticle.

The XPS2 has several reticle patterns to choose from:

XPS2-0 – 65 MOA ring and 1 MOA dot reticle

XPS2-1 – 1 MOA dot reticle

XPS2-3 – 2-dot ballistic reticle

XPS2-FN – FN Herstal’s less lethal reticle

XPS2-SAGE – targeting and ranging reticle

Price:

The XPS2 is the more expensive of the two, and it is because of the details mentioned above. If you feel that the differences between them are negligible, then go with the 512. If you know that you will be adding a magnifier or other accessory at some point, then save your rail space and get the XPS2.

LBC Compatibility:

In 2014, EOTech released its laser battery cap (LBC) series, which is a line of 2 battery cap replacements. The first is the LBC, which projects a visible laser beam onto the target. The second is the LBC2, which features a visible laser and an invisible infrared beam (for night vision purposes).

The LBC series is only compatible with HWS models 512/552/518/558. The XPS2 is therefore incompatible with this unit, and if the LBC is something you could see yourself being interested in – get the 512. In fact, there is a 512 + LBC bundle available, for a reduced price.

Mounting and Possible Drawbacks

Both of these sights are easy to mount and easy to use. They are meant for use with a 1-inch weaver rail or MIL-STD-1913 (picatinny) rail. Whether you are a novice or a veteran shooter, these sights can help you make the most of your range time. If it is a question of active duty, both of these sights have seen combat, and have earned the respect of law-enforcement officers, government agents, and military personnel.

One issue (read: complaint) which seems to come up occasionally, is that of recoil. Not everyone agrees on this, but the XPS2’s battery compartment has a reputation of handling recoil better than the AA battery compartment of the 512.

EOtech 512 AA compatibility

Some users have stated that the springs on the 512’s AA battery cap have trouble handling the repeated punishment of recoil, and that the way the batteries are positioned can damage the integrity of the battery compartment. The XPS’s battery cap is smaller and more secure, and the battery itself is mounted sideways. This way, it can be trusted to handle the recoil of any firearm on which it is mounted, and not move around inside of its compartment like AA batteries.

Keep in mind that you may not experience this issue at all. The 512 is still incredibly popular for a reason. If it were so inherently flawed, it would have never found the success which it still enjoys. It isn’t just about a lower price tag – the thing needs to perform in combat situations and harsh conditions, the least of which is recoil.

There Will Always Be New

“New is always better”, or is it?

There is one memorable How I Met Your Mother episode, where Barney Stinson unequivocally states that “new is always better”. Following that statement, Ted challenges Barney to drink the newest scotch which their bar has to offer (Jumbo Jim’s Grape Scotch), in an attempt to prove that he is wrong. Barney accepts the challenge, and, well, I won’t spoil the awesome outcome for you, but let’s just say that “new is always better” is not always true.

There are many shooters out there who are preferring the older 512 to the newer XPS2 model. There is nothing wrong with choosing a classic over a new model. People do it all the time.

Ultimately, it is all about you and your level of comfort. You are the one who is going to have to shoot this weapon, so any optics you mount on it ought to be ones which you are comfortable training with and operating.

Whether it’s the older 512 or the newer XPS2, with EOTech you are getting a quality item. The warranty on both is for 2 years. Both are made in the U.S. and both are reliable and accurate. Both will act as a great addition to any rifle.

Do your research, take your time, and – if you can – try them both out before settling on one of them. That way you can be sure of your decision.

Happy hunting!

EOTech has been making optics for firearms since the mid-90s, and they are considered one of the top optics companies in the world. Their holographic weapon sight (HWS) series has been well-received by civilians and military personnel. With every new installment or addition to the HWS family, there is something to get excited about.

The EOTech EXPS2 was released around 2010. The quality of the reticle, and the reticle’s size are par for the course. EOTech makes great optic accessories, and this one is no different. What sets this item apart from the rest, is its slimmer build and compactness. It is a smaller platform, and that can make a big difference, especially if you want to mount other accessories – such as a back-up iron sight or magnifier – on the same rail.

This sight is set a little higher than most of EOTech’s previous models. What this extra height provides is an iron sight co-witness, in the lower third of the optic’s window. This gives the shooter even more control, and it makes sure you hit the target, whether it is very close or mid-range. For targets up to 100 yards or so, this really is one of the best optics you could ask for.

The control buttons on the EXPS2 are on the side, which facilitates a quicker and more natural operation of the device. This also allows other optics, such as EOTech’s G33.STS magnifier, to be placed behind the sight and not get in the way of operating it.

Army EOTech style

With earlier models (like the 512 or 522), you had to move the magnifier out of the way in order to reach the sight’s control buttons, which were on the back of the sight. With the EXPS2, you don’t lose time. Brightness adjustments can be done on the fly, without having to mess with anything else. In short, you stay on target, and you stay situationally aware. That counts for a lot, and it is no wonder that EOTech switched the position of the control buttons on its later models.

The windage and elevation dials are also on the side, and they can be adjusted with the help of a coin or screwdriver. They have an audible click mechanism, which is a big help in letting you know when you have made the appropriate change. If you feel resistance when adjusting, you have probably reached the end of the adjustment range. Making adjustments to the optic’s windage and elevation should wait until the device is properly mounted on the firearm.

The EXPS2 comes in two different models, which differ by reticle pattern:

reticle of exps2

EXPS2-0 – traditional 65 minute of angle (MOA) ring, and 1 MOA dot

EXPS2-2 – 2-dot ballistic reticle, meant for short and long ranging

The Convenience of Operating an EOTech

The operator doesn’t have that much to do. The device comes from the factory already permanently pre-lubed and ready to go. The only actions an operator should take are cleaning the device and changing the batteries when necessary. Do not attempt to oil your sight. The only time oil should be used is for the quick-release lever. If you are experiencing any difficulties with the lever, apply a single drop of gun oil to it. That is pretty much all the maintenance you will ever need to perform on this sight.

Cleaning the optic should always been done with a moistened lens cloth or other soft cloth. First, blow away any dust or dirt. Then, apply lens-cleaning or glass-cleaning fluid to a cloth, and be gentle with it on the glass surfaces. When cleaning the outer protective hood, use a soft cloth as well. User only water-based cleaners to clean your EOTEch sight, since anything else could cause irreparable damage to your optic, and maybe even render it useless.

Like the rest of the EOTech HWS family, the EXPS2 is made in the U.S. It comes with a 2-year warranty on defects in materials and craftsmanship. If something is wrong with your optic, get in touch with the company. EOTech have great customer service. They realize that people are putting down significant sums of money in exchange for a quality product, and they try to serve their customers the best they can.

The EXPS2 is meant primarily for close-quarter battle (CQB) and other short-range encounters. Depending on your skills and eyesight, you could probably use it for longer distances. For much longer distances, however, it is better to either acquire a scope, or alternatively to mount a magnifier behind the sight.

EOTech is coming out with a brand new line of magnifying rifle scopes (named Vudu), in the summer of 2016. Judging by EOTech’s history of high-quality products – specifically their line of holographic sights – I think we can expect great things from the Vudu series come summertime.

eotech exps2

The manufacturer suggested retail price of the EXPS2 is $579. Amazon is selling them for lower than that, as are places like OpticsPlanet. The price tag is relatively friendly, because the rule of thumb is that an optic should probably cost about the same price as your firearm. Remember – with optics, the more expensive ones are usually the better ones. You don’t want to spend a nice amount of money on a quality rifle, and then skimp on the optics. Ideally, you would want a sight that will stay with you for a long time, and provide the security and confidence that you require.

If you like the EXPS2, but are in need of night vision capabilities, make sure to check out EOTech’s EXPS3.

EOTech’s magnifier went on the market a few years ago, and for a while it was very difficult to find. Apparently, the military got wind of the release, and ordered many units. SO many, in fact, that civilian orders were put on hold, to facilitate the military’s needs.

The EOTech G33.STS magnifier is the third generation of EOTech magnifiers. STS stands for “switch to side”, referring to the way in which the magnifier mount operates. The user needs only to slap the mount to the side when necessary, and then slap it back into place.

magnifier in action

With the G33, they took the various issues and complaints which consumers had with the first and second generation of magnifiers (known as G23.FTS), and managed to fix them all for the release of this excellent third-generation optic. It is shorter, lighter, and more compatible than the previous models.

EOtech Magnifier Tech Specs

Let’s take a look at some of the technical specifications of the G33:

Magnification – 3x (fixed)

Dimensions – L 3.9 x W 2.2 x H 3.3 inches

Weight – 11.2 oz.

Eye Relief – 2.2 inches

Compatible with all EOTech holographic weapon sights (HWS)

Submersible to 33 feet depth

Mounts to any MIL-STD-1913 (picatinny) rail or 1-inch weaver rail

Fog-resistant lens coating

The first generation of EOTech magnifiers were sold in 3x and 4x configurations. Since then, the company made some changes, and it now sells only 3x magnifiers. A nice little bonus is that the third-generation mount is ambidextrous. You can fit it for left- and right-handed flippers alike.

The G33 is primarily meant to be used behind an existing EOTech HWS. It is designed to be mounted directly behind the sight, and with models which feature a side button interface, the shooter can easily operate and adjust the sight as needed, without moving the magnifier out of the way. For those with models which have buttons on the back of the sight, it will probably be necessary to flip the magnifier aside. Either way, once you break the magnifier in a little bit, slapping it back and forth becomes second nature, and it helps a great deal with transitioning between close-range targets and longer-range ones.

Sight and Magnifier

The magnifier allows the shooter to engage targets with a great amount of confidence, be it in a close-quarter battle (CQB) scenario, or even at distances out to 2000 feet away.

There is a reason why the military was immediately interested in this product. Not only is it HWS compatible (many duty rifles have EOTech HWSs on them), but it is made of very high grade materials. Only a product which is durable, robust, versatile, and accurate would have passed the military’s demanding tests and trials.

There is a 7mm riser which is included with the sight, though there are some shooters who will not need it. The 7mm riser may be required to align the magnifier with the sight. The HWS models which require use of the 7mm are those with side buttons or a quick-release lever. All other HWS models do not necessitate the use of a riser, and shooters should not attempt to install it where it isn’t needed. Unless, of course, your goal is to throw off your aim completely.

Magnifier Retail Price

The manufacturer suggested retail price for the G33 magnifier is $589. On Amazon, EOTech is selling them for under $550, but the prices will not be too much lower than that, even elsewhere. Why does it cost so much? Because it is a quality product. It is that simple. You get what you pay for, and this thing has a solid build. It is designed to take a beating – nay, many beatings! – and just keep on truckin’. It will take a lot of punishment for this unit to become damaged beyond use. This thing is tough.

EOTech decided to give this magnifier a 3x power of magnification, which was a smart move. 3x is one of the best magnifications for a fixed optic, because it suits many different scenarios and conditions. While it does magnify everything times three, this magnifier allows the user to maintain control of the surrounding areas. To be situationally aware. You can make some really nice long shots with the G33, and still have a wide field of view to work with. Nothing is cut short or compromised.

Trijicon ACOG

Speaking of compromising, what is great about this magnifier is that it can stand up to the best of them. This magnifier is meant, first and foremost, for those who have an EOTech HWS and are interested in expanding their sight’s horizons. Instead of investing close to (or over) $1000 on something like the Trijicon ACOG, invest less in something which will give you the results that you need. What you end up with is a fine-looking 3x scope which is in line with a 65 minute of angle (MOA) reticle, and a 1 MOA dot.

Like I said, this third-generation magnifier is one which really outshines the former two generations of the past. That is my opinion, anyway. And, just to be clear, I have nothing against the ACOG. I have only tons of respect for Trijicon, and their amazing line of products.

The ease with which this magnifier can be flipped or slapped aside is great. In the blink of an eye, you are staring through your holographic sight, waiting to engage anyone and anything which may come at you from a short distance.

U.S. Military

So, bottom line: if you are looking for a high-quality scope, and don’t have that much money to spend, but on the other hand you are not willing to compromise your safety and the safety of your loved ones – go with an EOTech magnifier. It has so many important features, and operating it truly is an easy concept to grasp. This device can be released quickly, pushed aside for momentary short-range action, and be returned to its place just as easily.

And it is compatible with a lot more than EOTech’s sights. To find out if your rifle is compatible with the G33, visit EOTech’s website or get in touch with their customer service.

The 518 model is a recent addition to the EOTech holographic weapon sight (HWS) family, and it shares many features with EOTech’s EXPS series. This is our EOtech 518 review.

First introduced in Las Vegas, during SHOT show 2015, the HWS Eotech 518 piqued the interest of many shooters and enthusiasts. It is a slick and slim package, which features a 65 minute of angle (MOA) reticle with a 1 MOA red dot.

SHOT las vegas

With this model, the function buttons – which regulate operation and brightness – have been moved to the side. This was done in order to A) improve the speed and ease of button manipulation, B) facilitate the 518’s compatibility with other accessories, such as the EOTech magnifier, and C) to reduce the overall amount of rail space used by the optic.

Specs of the Eotech 518

So, this thing has many advantages. Let’s see some of the HWS 518’s technical specifications:

Quick-release lever

The HWS 518 runs on 2 AA batteries, and lithium is probably the best way to go. It guarantees the longest life for the optic, especially if used with lower brightness settings and at normal temperatures. What is good to know is that when the batteries are done, they are done. The optic shuts off. You won’t get to a point where the reticle is flashing on and off, while it struggles for power. The reticle is either there, or it ain’t.

NOTE: the reticle does flash on and off sometimes, as part of the start-up procedure. If the reticle is blinking when you turn on the device, it is time to change (or recharge) the batteries.

One way in which the 518 is different from many other HWS models, is that it is compatible with EOTech’s drop-in laser battery cap (LBC) series. The LBC is yet another recent addition to EOTech’s line, and it is also a product which was received with a lot enthusiasm.

This model is designed for engaging close to mid-range targets. The coatings on the lenses, and the brightly-lit reticle, allow you to acquire your target quickly and easily. No reflection, no distortion, and no other issue to take your mind and eyes off of the target. This model was engineered with two-eyes-open shooting in mind, so be sure to take full advantage of this optic by using it the way it is meant to be used.

Eotech 518 Maintenance

This unit is built to last. The housing is made of a sturdy aluminum, and the design allows you to move through any kind of terrain. The sight will not get caught on or in anything. It is easy to mount, easy to configure, and easy to use.

Like other EOTech models, the 518 also has an automatic shutdown feature, which helps to control use and conserve battery. If the device is turned on using the UP button, it will cause the sight to shut down 8 hours after the most recent push of any control button. Activating the device using the DOWN button, however, will cause the sight to automatically shut off after 4 hours.

Eotech Sight

The windage and elevations adjustors can be manipulated with the help of a screwdriver or a coin. It is suggested that the windage and elevation be adjusted only after the sight has been mounted. If properly mounted, the elevation and windage should be close to the factory mechanical zero.

The 518 requires no special maintenance, other than the occasional battery-replacement, dusting of the protective hood, or cleaning of the sight’s lenses. Keeping the lenses clean is very important, but you need to know what to use, in order to avoid causing any harm to the glass and its coating.

To clean the lenses, use a water-based cleaner on a lens tissue or soft cloth. Make sure to apply lens cleaning fluid or glass cleaner to the cloth, before beginning to clean the lens. Never clean the glass with a paper towel or dry cloth of any kind, since it can seriously scratch the lens, or cause other damage. Should the hood of the sight require cleaning, do it with a soft cloth.

Furthermore, do not attempt to lubricate or oil your sight (not even with grade A, organic, berry-flavored lube). All of the moving parts of the 518 have been permanently lubricated at the factory, so no more moistening is required at any time.

The only thing which the user should add a single drop of oil to – only when needed – is the quick-release lever. This should be done if the lever is producing an audible noise when being used.

Eotech Review Summary

The HWS 518 is made in the U.S.A, and it comes with a limited 2-year warranty on defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty is valid as of the purchase date, so a proof of purchase is required for receiving customer service. EOTech will either replace or repair the sight, depending on the issue.

The manufacturer suggested retail price for this unit is $539, but it is also available for under $500, in different places online and offline.

EOTech

The only complaint which is sometimes heard, regarding this model, is the question of battery life. This has got to be one of the most subjective complaints there are. Invariably, different people will have different experiences, because of the many differences in conditions – of power source, of temperature, and of brightness settings. Just because the sight didn’t bode well with someone, doesn’t mean that it is no good.

The 518 is convenient and accessible. It is one of the best daytime sights out there, and it’s got EOTech’s history of proven success to back it up. When you use this optic, you are getting all of the advantages which come with EOTech’s EXPS series. Plus, it has a very common power source (AA batteries), and the option of using magnifiers, as well as the new laser battery cap series.

Enhancing your shooting experience – whether you are a civilian, military, or law-enforcement – is what EOTech is all about. The 518 is just another example of why companies like EOTech are setting the standards for optics manufacturers worldwide.

The EOTech holographic weapon sight (HWS) series has proven itself in many situations. It is used by civilians, officers, soldiers, and government agents in many places in the world.

EOTech produces 17 different holographic sights, and the most popular non night-vision-compatible model is the EOTech 512. In this review, we will try to understand what makes this particular model so widely-used.

The HWS 512 is designed for close to mid-range encounters. It is a non-magnifying optic, and it provides rapid target acquisition when you need it most. The sight’s red reticle is ringed and dotted. For close-quarter battle (CQB), use the ring. For longer ranges, use the 1 minute of angle (MOA) dot. In both cases, the reticle will not distort or obscure the target. The shooter has complete control over any situation, and is able to find the target and even transition between ranges, without shifting focus or compromising awareness.

Price of EOTech 512

First of all, what makes this model a best-seller is the price tag. Pretty straightforward, really. $459 is EOTech’s suggested retail price for this unit, but it can be found for under $400 at various websites and shops. It is one of the cheapest holographic sights in the entire EOTech catalogue, surpassed only by the model XPS2-RF ($405), which is designated for non-tactical use.

Holographic EOTech sights

The XPS2-RF is primarily intended for air-rifle platforms. I am not knocking air rifles – to each, his own – but obviously there are differences between these two models The 512 is a genuine combat sight, meant for real rifles and actual battle conditions.

The 512 will work for anyone who is operating the firearm, be it a beginner or an expert. Part of what makes the HWS series so popular is its simplicity. It is easy to mount, easy to configure, and easy to use.

Because of the way this sight is designed, it is virtually parallax free. It needs no compensation, because even though your eyes may move, the holographic reticle stays right on target. This enables the use the oh-so-popular two-eyes-open kind of shooting, which many people seem to enjoy. It makes sense, really. Having both eyes open increases awareness of the situation, and it provides the shooter with the security and control necessary to make the shot count. And that is really what this is all about – making your shots count. It is why we spend time and money on a weapon, it is why we train with it, and it is why we accessorize our weapons with high-tech, high-quality, job-finishing sights like the EOTech 512.

EOTech 512 Characteristics

The 512 works in conjunction with your rifle’s iron sights, so in the event of the batteries failing or any other kind of malfunction, you can flip up your iron sights, and use them through the 512’s window.

By the way, if you do not have flip up iron sights on your rifle, I urge you to purchase some – if only for back-up purposes. We mentioned awareness as a key attribute, and it is the desire of most shooters to be as aware as they can be. It is part of why we carry, in my opinion. Keeping that in mind, you should always have at least one other method of acquiring your target. Iron back-up sights are the easiest way to go.

The HWS 512 arrives from the company’s factory in very good form, and usually requires only minor adjustments – if any – before it is ready to out on the range. Then, once it is mounted on your rifle and zeroed in, this sight will hold on to that zero very well.

The clarity and integrity of the image is part of what makes this sight (and others in the HWS series) so popular. 1/8 inch glass makes up the front window, and a 3/16 inch laminate makes up the rear window. You will get no glare, no distortion, and no reflection. It is a quality piece of work.

All EOTech HWS products are warrantied for a period of 2 years, as of the purchase date (proof of purchase is required). If you find a defect of some sort in the materials and workmanship which went into making your sight, send it back. EOTech will replace or repair the sight, depending on the nature of the complaint.

Speaking of complaints, there is one issue which may cause some people to go for a different model than the 512. What is this complaint about? The AA batteries, of course.

CR2032 battery

On the one hand, AA batteries are very common and relatively inexpensive. On the other hand, they lengthen the sight, due to their shape. There are other HWS models which utilize a single CR2032 battery, and those models are even more compact, because the battery cap is smaller. Just something to think about, though for many it will make no difference.

EOTech’s headquarters are located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Like other sights in the HWS line – and most, if not all, of EOTech’s products – the 512 is made with pride in the United States.

The company has a variety of holographic sight models out there, but it is for these reasons that the 512 continues to be one of their most popular and sought-after items.

So, if you find yourself in need of a close to mid-range sight; if you can dig a red dot reticle, and are not into night vision-compatibility; and if you don’t mind the AA battery cap size – the EOTech HWS 512 is definitely something to consider. It is an outstanding sight, which has the potential to serve you, and your weapon, for many years to come.
