The GM6 Lynx – also known as the Gepárd anti-materiel rifle – is one of the most powerful and nifty long-range rifles in the world. Although you don’t usually hear too much about Hungarian firearms, the GM6 has been slowly perfected since its inception in 1991. Over the years, several models have been introduced by Ferenc Földi and the Institute of Military Technology of the Hungarian People’s Army with the M6 being the most recent. Let’s take a look at what makes this rifle so special and why you might want one

GM6 Rifle in Black

What is an Anti-Material Rifle?

As an anti-material rifle, the GM6 was designed to shoot and destroy unarmored or lightly armored targets. After joining the Warsaw Pact and finding themselves stuck behind the Iron Curtain, Hungary understood the need for strong urban warfare capabilities. In fact, some models like the M3 were powerful enough to take down helicopters and APCs. According to most definitions, anti-material weapons are strictly designed to take down enemy equipment and not combatants.

However, the M6, or the GM6 Lynx bridged the gap between standard anti-material rifles and powerful sniper rifles. This is a lot like the American Barret M82 which was originally designed for anti-material use but was used heavily for anti-personnel situations. The Hungarian Gepárd anti-materiel rifles are among the more impressive anti-material rifles but few can compare to the American McMillan Tac-50 and Barrett M82A1.

Shooting the GM6 Rifle

GM6 Lynx Rifle

The GM6 is significant in a lot of ways but I admire how the Hungarians developed the rifle from the M1 all the way up to the M6 Lynx. They changed many features which enabled the rifle to transform into an entirely new combat tool. For example, the M6 features a much better scope, shorter overall length, stronger internal components, a bullpup design, and fires 12.7×108mm and .50 BMG rounds.

While the GM6 does sport a non-traditional design (gotta love the bullpup), it’s actually quite intuitive and can be fired standing up and on the move in the right hands. I’ve seen soldiers mount a foregrip and go on the move for recon. Not to mention, most rifles in this family don’t hold 5-round mags in a 25 lb. frame.

Sniping with the GM6

Taking a closer look will reveal that the Hungarian-made firearm is spectacularly-built with high-quality components inside and out. It’s an impressive machine with controls that are intuitive and easy-to-manage. The bullpup design adds a lot to this gun especially when it comes to balancing the weight and reducing felt-recoil. Likewise, they included highly-specialized barrels for increased accuracy and even more recoil management.

I can’t say for sure why more countries don’t use this weapon, but it has so much to offer on paper and has a decent reputation in Europe. The standout features are definitely the bullpup design, lightweight portable build, and diverse operational capabiities.

The HK G36 boasts a pretty impressive record around the world but recent findings have nearly halted its use in modern warfare. Although its future is bleak, the German rifle has an important past that will cement it as one of the most significant rifles of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Now, Heckler and Koch have certainly faced controversy and scrutiny over the years and the G36 was just one part of their fluctuating reputation. Besides an international illegal arms case involving G36 sales to Mexico, H&K firearms are estimated to have killed over 2 million people and counting. There’s so much to talk about the G36 rifle so let’s go to it and take a closer look.

HK G36 Rifle Design

To understand the G36, we must first look at its predecessor, the 7.62mm G3 Battle Rifle. The G3 was Germany’s first major rifle manufactured post-war and was a select-fire rifle made in collaboration with the Spanish. While the new gun was heavily influenced by German engineering, the design was primarily based on the Spanish CETME rifle. The G3 was a good weapon and managed to stick around for nearly 4 decades. While the Germans liked the G3 design, they made many significant upgrades when they developed the G36. For instance, the new and improved rifle would be made with a gas-operated, rotating bolt system as opposed to the roller-delayed blowback operating system of the G3.

HK G3A3 Rifle

Heckler and Koch debuted the G36 back in 1997 and it was a huge hit. In fact, it didn’t take long for it to be adopted by countries around the world, including NATO and U.N. forces. However, it really gained international attention for its significant use in the Yugoslavian and Middle Eastern conflicts.

It’s worth noting that the G36 wasn’t the first choice to replace the G3, as the Germans attempted to push their G11 and G41 rifles forward. Once the G36 beat the Steyr Aug in private trials, HK decided it was time to make the G36 their flagship rifle.

Heckler & Kock initialed called their new rifle the HK50 but would go on to adopt the Gewehr G36 designation for international use. The hype for the rifle was so big that a few countries had already obtained licenses for local manufacturing within a year of its release.

H&K G36 Rifle

In terms of its design, the G36 doesn’t seem that innovative but it was supposed to stand up to the stress of warfare and extreme environments better than other rifles on the market.

Adopting the 5.56mm cartridge helped solidify Germany’s place in NATO but wartime experience would be the real test for the HK G36. The G36 was made to be durable but lightweight and many argue that this extra effort to cut weight was a fatal error. Likewise, the rifle wasn’t the most user-friendly of battle rifles in spite of the fact it had a modular design. At the end of the day, a massive independent report detailed how the unsupported free-floating barrel caused accuracy to drastically drop with increased fire rates.

H&K G36 Variant

H&K G36 Performance

We can’t discuss the HK36 performance without addressing one of the biggest controversies in recent rifle history. The German rifle was becoming the rifle of choice for international conflicts at the onset of the 21st century but then the real test happened. H&K’s tests had all proved to be successful but it’s hard to replicate real-life battle situations in the Middle East, obviously.

After a messy run-in with the Taliban, Germany forces found themselves missing their targets at an alarming rate. A German-led investigation found that two mags of sustained fire practically rendered the barrels useless. The G36 free-floating barrels were highly-susceptible to overheating and warping that accuracy would drop to less than 10% at 100 meters.

According to the local reports, the plastic barrel channels would simply overheat, in spite of the accuracy-boosting free-floating barrel, and cause shots to veer off up to 18″ off-target at 200 meters. Keep in mind that the rifle doesn’t have a true free-floating barrel system. All things considered, the overheating issue is a multi-faceted issue associated with the plastic trunnion, hot 5.56mm rounds, and scorching Middle-Eastern climate among other things.

Free Floating Barreled Rifle

Oddly enough, this whole fiasco went to court because the German military believed Heckler and Koch were culpable and understandably so. Nevertheless, the court ruled that H&K wasn’t liable for the G36’s issues because the military’s specifications weren’t set at a standard that the G36 failed to meet. The Bundeswehr designed the G36 during peacetime and hadn’t sufficiently tested the rifle for sustained fire and extreme climate, so they were let off the hook.

The funny thing is that even with the lawsuit and HK refusing to accept responsibility for the G36’s failures, the Germany military looked to HK for their next rifle.

G36 Variants

Heckler and Koch are known for making variants of their firearms and the G36 has some pretty notable variants of their own. Although many folks know about the G36K and the G36C, the German arms company also designed a G36V, MG36, G36A2, SL8, R8, HK243, HK293, & G36KV. It’s worth noting that these aren’t just small tweaks, these variants include carbines, LMGs, SAWs, and sporting models.

HK G36K

HK XM8 Rifle Review

Although many people think of the XM8 as the civilian G36, HK also developed the HK243 and 293 for civilian use. The 243 and 293 civilian-legal versions of the G36 are similar to the original 36 models, but don’t have selective-fire, accepts STANAG mags, and have quad-Picatinny rails.

HK G36C Variant

I don’t particularly love these guns for their appearance, design, and functionality. But then you’ve got the odd XM8 which barely left the prototype stage. The G36-civilian-variant has shaky performance and unusual weight distribution which is probably why it’s so scarce.

HK XM8 Rifle

Conclusion

Heckler and Koch are still among the top gunmakers in the world but even the best make mistakes. The G36 was built to replace an outdated rifle but wasn’t made out of necessity. This point makes it almost unacceptable and uncharacteristic of German engineering. The G36 certainly made an impact worldwide but it’s already outdated for any serious conflicts and that’s something that should stain their reputation.

The revolutionary Savage Model 99 was created right before the turn of the 20th century and was one of the most state-of-the-art firearms of the era. The Savage Arms Company began operations over 125 years ago in Utica, New York, and saw modest success at the end of the 1890s. Arthur Savage, the founder of Savage Arms, was easily one of the most interesting gunmakers in American history. It was his ingenuity that led to the Model 99 that helped take the long rifle into the 20th century.

Savage Model 99s

Savage 99

Like many other popular rifles at the time, the Savage Model 99 was a lever-action rifle but with a few small but significant alterations. Besides for the fact that the 99 was a hammerless rifle unlike the classic Winchester 1894, the Savage rifle also fed from a rotary magazine. This unique setup helped garner attention across America but the cost of the rifle would eventually be its demise. While Savage clearly knew how to build a top-notch firearm, they struggled to make it suitable for the average American and that’s where Winchester was able to thrive.

Besides for nixing the external hammer and adding a rotary mag, the Savage 99 added a few other small features which made it appeal to a variety of shooters. For instance, the Model 99 had a cocking indicator built-in as well as a spool which acted as a counter for the magazine to show how many shots were left. Additionally, Savage employed a different style of safety mechanism that locks the lever and trigger.

While the Savage Model 99 was a popular hunting rifle, Savage was keen on arming the military with their firearms but failed on several occasions. In addition to losing a major Army contract to Krag-Jorgensen, Savage beat out the Winchester 1895 for a New York National Guard contract but politics caused the contract to be canceled.

Savage Model 99 Lever Action Rifle

Once World War I came around the Model 99 was already a well-respected rifle and Savage had hopes of supplying troops on the front lines. Although nearly all outfits said no to the 99, Savage did supply a small number of modified Model 99s to the Montreal Home Guard.

These guns aren’t so difficult to find these days and are actually very pleasant to shoot. Keep in mind that just because a firearm was discontinued doesn’t mean it was a total dud.

In terms of the feel of the rifle, it’s got intuitive controls, a smooth action, a comfortable grip, and a nice sight system. It’s a pleasure to shoot in a variety of calibers and would probably make a solid hunting rifle.

Savage 99 Models

The Savage 99 was produced nearly 100 years so it’s only natural that there would be variations made throughout the years. For instance, the 99 was built with open iron sights but later models would be developed with the necessary provisions for mounting a long rifle scope. Likewise, some of the later models also used a detachable box mag instead of the original rotary magazine.

One of the most significant variations of the Model 99 was the introduction of more and more different cartridge options. They started by using .303 Savage but would eventually move on to an even more powerful .300 Savage. Nevertheless, the Model 99 would go on to be outfitted for many more cartridges including .30-30 Winchester, .22 Savage Hi-Power, .308 Winchester, and even .410 bore!

One of the most interesting variants of the original Savage 99 was the Model 99D Musket. The Montreal Home Guard agreed to buy Savage rifles during WWI but requested several modifications. In addition to giving it a more musket feel by adding a military-style stock and bayonet lug, the Model 99D was typically personalized for each solider with special engravings.

Engraved Savage Model 99 – Courtesy of Guns International

Conclusion

Overall, the Savage Model 99 was one of the most revolutionary rifles in its time and should be viewed as a significant piece of firearm history. It’s still remarkably quick-pointing and could still be relevant for today’s hunters. Lever-action rifles are making a big comeback, thanks in part to Henry Arms, and I believe the Savage Model 99 will become a hot item at auction houses. It’s a good looking gun that shoots well and doesn’t disappoint and I think it gets overlooked by Winchesters and Remingtons but it can hold its own against the best in its class.

In the mid-1800s, three partners went into business. These gentlemen originally built what they thought would be a wagon factory, in Rhine Falls, Switzerland. Well, it was. They produced wagons and railway cars for some years. At the start, this trio had no way of knowing that their company would eventually become one of the world’s largest and most respected manufacturers of small arms.

When the Swiss military needed a new type of firearm, they turned to the Schweizerische Waggon Fabrik (“Swiss Wagon Factory”). The musket which they designed and produced beat the competition and the Ministry of Defense ordered 30,000 units. The company changed its name to Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft (“Swiss Industrial Company”, or SIG), and it was on its way.

In 1976, a partnership was formed between SIG in Switzerland and J.P. Sauer & Sohn in Germany. SIG Sauer firearms have been imported into the States since the mid-1980s. Nowadays, the company’s U.S. subsidiary is far from home out in New Hampshire.

Sig Sauer MCX Series Overview

In 2015, Sig designed and produced a series of firearms that utilized the same system that was featured on the previously-released MPX submachine gun. The MCX notably has the option of conversion between different calibers. The semi-auto option is available for the civilian market, while the full-auto capabilities are reserved for armed forces and law enforcement agencies. The MCX comes in the form of a compact carbine, standard carbine, rifle, and short-barreled rifle (SBR). This is a classic Sig move offering such versatility in one line that’s helped them become one of the top gunmakers in the world.

Sig MCX Rattler PCB

There is also the MCX Low Visibility Assault Weapon, which is available for military and law enforcement only. It’s a full-auto short-barreled rifle, which features built-in suppression. It’s a SIG Sauer SBR with a real combat-proven lineage and is a pretty sweet setup.

The Sig MCX Pistol and Sig MCX SBR are both rather expensive, with an MSRP of $2,233 and $2,235, respectively. For those who can afford the price, what you get in return is one of the best SIG systems available. The MCX series has some features that make it an instant hit – no pun intended.

Sig MCX Virtus

Released in 2017, it is considered the “Gen 2” of the MCX series. The SIG MCX Virtus Patrol, SBR, and Pistol models are the standard, short-barreled, and pistol configurations, respectively. It is currently offered in 5.56mm and 300 BLK, with a polymer grip, alloy forend, and carbon steel barrel.

Sig Sauer MCX Virtus Patrol

I enjoyed the two-stage Matchlite Duo trigger on the SIG Virtus. Sure, there are upgrades and aftermarket options available, but for an out-of-the-box trigger, it’s pretty damn good. I am always trying to think of the strange-noise-in-the-middle-of-the-night scenario. In such a situation, the trigger will hardly matter. Home-defense is not a competition, by any stretch of the imagination. You want a weapon that will perform, and perform well.

Specs

Model: SIG MCX VIRTUS PISTOL

Caliber: 300 BLK

Action: Semi-automatic

Barrel Length: 9″

Overall Length: 28.5″

Height: 8″

Weight: 7 lbs

Magazine: 30-round AR-15

MSRP: $1,979

Sig Rattler

The Rattler is an MCX-series semi-auto pistol, available in 5.56mm and 300 BLK. It features a 5.5-inch barrel, and there is the option of a brace/stock and a suppressor. The Rattler proves to be a great – albeit quite expensive – choice for a home-defense system. You can use it in a variety of scenarios, and it’s discreet enough to get around with inside or outside.

Sig MCX Rattler SBR

It’s not a rifle-length barrel, which means that it will immediately get a resounding NO from certain would-be purchasers. Some folks are only about SIG rifles. It’s a low-visibility weapon that supports 30-round AR-15 magazines, it could act as a weapon for the home, vehicle, or outdoors alike. The PCB (pivoting contour brace) is a real asset, and it helps you be ready for just about anything. With free-float handguard, an M-LOK accessory rail, carbon steel barrel, enhanced SIG trigger, and other MCX goodies, the SIG Sauer MCX 300 Blackout Rattler is an accurate and reliable piece of defense hardware. But I daresay it won’t be everyone’s cup of gin. Some are looking for other attributes and characteristics, so it definitely is not a one-size-fits-all type of weapon.

Specs

Model: SIG MCX RATTLER PCB

Caliber: 300 BLK

Action: Semi-automatic

Barrel Length: 5.5″

Overall Length: 23

Height: 8″

Weight: 5.1 lbs

Magazine: 30-round AR-15

MSRP: $2,299

Conclusion

SIG Sauer rifles are many and varied. There is a lot of history there, of different models that were created and distributed and then dropped. The 300 BLK pistol is a hot item that not only SIG has dealings with, of course. Ever since the BLK 300 was introduced, there’ve been manufacturers who geared their production lines towards that trendy caliber. And so far, it has proven itself worthy of the praise.

Turkish firearms are nothing new to the American firearms industry, think the SAR9, Canik TP9, Stoeger shotguns, and more – However, the Panzer Arms AR12 is truly in a league of its own. Today we’re going to take a closer look at one of the most interesting firearms on the civilian market that combines two very different platforms for a pretty wild outcome. Although this isn’t the only shotgun based on the AR-platform, it has certainly become the prototype for this unusual new niche firearm.

Panzer Arms Availability

Panzer Arms is a Turkish-based gun manufacturer that has been producing hunting rifles and other firearms for around 50 years. While many shooters will question the integrity of a Turkish-made firearm, the American market has been largely impressed by Panzer Arms. While this may not attest to the quality of all Turkish guns, it safe to say that Panzer Arms has earned the title of a legitimate and trustworthy manufacturer.

Nevertheless, most people get these guns through an importer and many people choose Atlantic Firearms. However, there is an American Panzer Arms subsidiary called Panzer Arms USA. Keep in mind that because this is such a budget-friendly firearm, choosing an importer usually revolves around availability and less about finding the right price. This isn’t always the case with niche guns but the Panzer Arms guns are kind to the wallet.

The Panzer AR12 is basically an AR-15 shotgun and there aren’t many of those on the market. Being such a niche gun definitely adds to the appeal of this gun but it’s so interesting and affordable, I can’t imagine who wouldn’t want one. On the other hand, I didn’t have the most amazing experience with the similar Rock Island Armory VR80 but I was ready to give this AR-shotgun a chance.

Picking this gun up is very much like picking up your standard AR, even in its heaviness. The pistol grip, semi-adjustable synthetic stock, and full rail totally hide the fact this is actually shotgun. So I loaded 5 slugs into a magazine (which felt weird) and then I got the sense that this was more than just an AR-15.

Shooting the AR12

The controls were intuitive and functioned perfectly. It was easy to load and unload and the handling was fantastic for shooting slugs. In practice, I really think this gun has the potential to be a great home defense gun. While it’s all fun and games at the range, this showed real potential for use as a defensive firearm. I love shotguns and I think there are many defensive applications for them. However, the Panzer AR12 gives you that but adds the control and tactical benefits of the AR-platform.

I love that there are multiple attachment points including swivel mounts because it really gives this gun a tactical edge. Panzer understands that while this gun is fun to shoot, it does indeed serve a functional purpose. That being said, I was a bit disappointed that there is a fake barrel shroud attached that is just for looks. It’s not a big deal, but this isn’t a damn toy. Aesthetics are important but I don’t want fake anything on my firearms.

The Panzer Arms AR12 Pro was not as exciting as I had hoped as it’s remarkably similar to the standard model. The primary difference is that the AR12 Pro features slightly different rails and an aluminum alloy receiver. While this may not seem like much, it does have a slight effect on performance. The added 3 pounds of weight of the reinforced receiver will help the firearm last longer but it also helps add stability and give the gun a more solid feel. I definitely wasn’t disappointed with Panzer Pro but I was hoping for more innovation.

So if you thought the original Panzer Arms AR 12 was a Frankenstein kind of gun, then meet the Panzer BP12 – The bullpup version of the AR-15 12 gauge shotgun. Like the AR12 and AR12 Pro, the BP12 is a tactical masterpiece with all the bells and whistles you’d want in a gun like this if you ever imagined such a thing.

For starters, I love bullpups because they’re super reliable, ergonomic, tactical, and fun guns to own and shoot. One of the most interesting components is that this baby is only 30″ long but has a 20-inch barrel. Yes, that means that there’s only 10″ not part of the barrel meaning this gun makes use of its space like a packrat in a studio apartment.

However, shooting the BP12 is surprisingly comfortable and intuitive if you’re at all familiar with bullpups. I really like that it’s ready to handle all kinds of optics and attachments plus it’s got built-in sling points and an angled foregrip which gives the gun superb handling. It’s a very natural feel that fits this firearm nicely. Plus, it’s an ambidextrous-friendly gun so they really put some thought into the controls of this system.

You’ll also notice that, like many bullpups, this long gun is supremely balanced which makes handling the gun that much easier. I also want to mention the stock with its adjustable comb and comfortable buttpad. This gun needed a top-notch stock and I think Panzer did a fairly good job with it.

Panzer Arms AR 12 Accessories

At the end of the day, the accessory options for the Panzer Arms AR 12 are nearly endless. They placed attachment points all over these long guns and made it one of the most tactical-friendly firearms on the market. These are definitely niche guns but they are functional, affordable, and a blast to shoot.

Leupold DeltaPoint Pro Reflex Sight

You can search for shotgun accessories or rifle accessories and you’ll find just what you’re looking for. Between lights, lasers, grips, and more, there’s no limit to how you can deck out your AR12. Personally, I think a side-mounted laser light is a sweet set up and it’s hard to beat Streamlight and their many tactical options. A reflex sight is also a great choice for tactical shooting with this gun and the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro Sight is one of the best money can buy.

Ruger is one of the most recognizable names in the firearms industry and for good reason. In addition to top-selling revolvers, pistols, rifles, and accessories, shooters flock to Ruger for their affordable price tags and American-made products. While many of their products aren’t winning any serious awards, they’ve done a commendable job in arming Americans with affordable firearms. The Ruger American bolt-action rifle is the perfect example of this commitment to affordable American guns. Today, we’re going to take a look at the expansive American Rifle line and see how it measures up to scrutiny.

Ruger American Rifle

The Ruger American Rifle was launched in 2011 and was met with modest success. The brand recognition, affordable price tag, and popular design made it an easy sell to the American shooting enthusiasts. This line currently has 7 models available in countless configurations and calibers. As a collection, these rifles share the Ruger Marksman Adjustable trigger which many hunters and long-range shooters applaud. The ability to have an adjustable trigger pull on a budget firearm was a great touch that paid off big time for Ruger.

When it comes to the construction of these rifles, you can tell these aren’t high end firearms, but that doesn’t mean they’re not up to snuff . The synthetic composition is lightweight but is decently durable. Nevertheless, wielding the rifle was intuitive and shooting was pretty comfortable thanks to a decent rubber buttpad. However, the bolt action could be better but it’s still not bad for a budget rifle. They built it with a 70-degree throw with dual cocking cams so it does cycle pretty smoothly with most ammo.

Ruger American Bolt Action Mechanism

These rifles come equipped with a Picatinny scope base and no iron sights so shooters are left to pick their optic of choice. While Ruger claims these can achieve MOA accuracy, it’s a claim that is tough to back up. They did invest in their barrels which definitely helps thanks to the cold hammer-forged build and precision rifling.

I don’t think the Ruger American is an objectively amazing rifle but I think it’s still rather impressive, especially considering how much bang you get for your buck. I like the 22” barrel and 42” overall length design that weighs in at just over 6 pounds. The rifle feels good and it shoots well, so I think it’s easily one of the best budget rifles on the market. I felt like Ruger’s other budget firearms were more impressive than these, but this is not a rifle you want to overlook or underestimate.

I think many shooters should consider the other models in the series to get more bang for their buck, especially for those with a specific shooting purpose in mind. I don’t think a regular hunter would want to rely on this rifle, but a new or young hunter may benefit from starting with the standard model. I also like that the Standard model is available in a nice selection of calibers including 30-06, 243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, and more. Note that the Standard ships with a flush fit 4-round magazine that’s not too shabby.

Close Up of the Standard Model

Ruger American Ranch Rifle

After getting my hands on the standard model, I decided it was time to explore the other models. I started with the Ranch rifle and I was pleasantly surprised. It felt very similar to the Standard but with a few nice additions. Besides the different finish, one of the biggest differences was the threaded barrel and optional Ruger hybrid muzzle brake. Unlike the Standard series, many of the Ranch rifles offer increased capacities ranging up to 10 rounds with the 5.56 NATO and 300 BLK models.

Close Up of the Ranch Model

While the Ranch rifles are more expensive than the Standard models, I’m not sure they offer enough that they warrant a higher price tag. They were nice guns and all but it’s not a big step up from the Standard series. It’s important to note that these rifles are about 6” shorter than the Standard models which can be a good or bad thing depending on your preference. I think the main attraction to this series would be the more compact build, flat dark earth synthetic composition, diverse caliber choices, slightly upgraded barrel, and increased capacities.

Model: Ranch

Caliber: 5.56 NATO

Capacity: 10

Finish: Flat Dark Earth

Stock: Synthetic

Barrel Length: 16.12”

Overall Length: 36”

Weight: 6.1 lbs

MSRP: $549

Ruger American Compact

The Ruger American Compact series is interesting because it has basically the exact same specs as the Standard models minus a few inches. The Compact rifles are available in just 4 calibers with 4-round capacities in a matte black build. They share the Ruger Marksman Adjustable Trigger, user-friendly design, bolt action configuration, and barrel construction. I think this series was simply meant to be for shooters who like the Standard rifles but need a shorter length of pull. I’m not sure why that warrants a separate line but that’s probably a marketing ploy.

Ruger American Compact

Model: Compact

Caliber: 308 Win

Capacity: 4

Finish: Matte Black Alloy Steel

Stock: Black Synthetic

Barrel Length: 18”

Overall Length: 36.75”

Weight: 6 lbs

MSRP: $489

Ruger American Hunter

The Ruger American Hunter is probably the most interesting rifle in the American collection. For starters, the design is completely different due to the inclusion of the Magpul Hunter short-action stock with a fully adjustable comb height and LOP. The Magpul stock provides greater comfort and accuracy, especially for careful long-range hunters. Like the other American rifles, Ruger kept the popular adjustable trigger and bolt-action assembly but made a few other small changes.

For instance, they contoured the tip of the barrel to fit the Ruger Precision Rifle hybrid muzzle brake. This is a nice touch on this rifle but they don’t really give you the option to have it. I get that it’s a budget rifle and they believe they are providing a nice addition to hunters who may not otherwise have a muzzle brake or suppressor. Nevertheless, it’s a pretty good muzzle brake and has been shown to reduce recoil by over 50% and improve long-range accuracy. I must admit that I was really impressed that they included a PMAG 5 7.62 AC mag. This is really a nice touch and helps give this rifle more appeal compared to the other Ruger American models. Keep in mind that all of these extras means that the Hunter rifles are going to be heavier and more expensive than the other models.

Ruger American Hunter

Model: Hunter

Caliber: 6.5 Creedmoor

Capacity: 5

Finish: Matte Black Alloy Steel

Stock: Magpul Hunter

Barrel Length: 20”

Overall Length: 41.25” – 43.25”

Weight: 9.2 lbs

MSRP: $799

Ruger American Rifle Predator 6.5 Creedmoor

Although the Ruger American rifles haven’t met the success Ruger predicted, the Predator model has seen positive sales and is arguably the most popular rifle of the series. The Predator features many of the same American options such as the Marksman adjustable trigger, lightweight compact design, bolt-action assembly, and tang safety. However, Ruger changed things up with a heavier tapered, threaded cold hammer-forged barrel. I think this barrel is the best of the collection and offers solid long-range accuracy.

Another reason why many shooters like this series is because of its variety. In addition to several mag variations, the Predator rifles are offered in multiple thread patterns, stocks, capacities, finishes, lengths, and calibers. However, one model has become the go-to and that is the 6.5 Creedmoor Predator rifle. This configuration makes for a decent hunting rifle and is good for other long-range shooting activities. Now these still feel like budget rifles, but I wouldn’t say they feel cheap. They are good guns but they certainly aren’t great either.

Ruger American Predator

Model: Predator

Caliber: 6.5 Creedmoor

Capacity: 4

Finish: Matte Black Alloy Steel

Stock: Moss Green Synthetic

Barrel Length: 22”

Overall Length: 42”

Weight: 6.6 lbs

MSRP: $529

Ruger American Stock

While many people focus on the barrels or triggers of the Ruger American rifles, there is what to say about the stock options. For starters, most of these stocks feature a simple but effective soft rubber buttpad that is comfortable with most calibers. These synthetic stocks aren’t the most attractive on the market nor are they remarkably durable, but they do work well and it is a budget firearm after all. In fact, you can buy a brand new Standard stock (which is basically the entire shell of the gun) for just $100.

On the other hand, the upgraded Hunter American Magpul Stock will take you back $300. This is understandable considering it’s a Magpul product with excellent features. For example, the drop-in design is M-LOK compatible, includes a bolt-action mag well and PMAG, and is reinforced with a type III hard anodized, machine finished cast aluminum bedding block. Plus, this is by far the most ergonomic Ruger American Stock with plenty of adjustability and reliability.

If you’re looking for a most custom stock option then Boyd’s Gunstocks is considered the best place to go. They have a great selection of hardwood gunstock options and allow customers to even create custom products to their liking. Besides the fact that these are surprisingly affordable, they offer so much and it’s a great way to make an American Rifle truly your own.

Example Stock From Boyd’s

Ruger American Rifle Extended Magazine

Because many American rifle models don’t have high capacities, many shooters look for extended magazines. The most popular choice is the Magpul PMAG 10 7.62 AC for the American Hunter rifles. The PMAG is a great quality magazine designed for the .308 Winchester-based family of cartridges.

Ruger American 6.5 Creedmoor

Ruger offers a few American rifles in 6.5 Creedmoor but it’s hard not to like the Hunter model. 6.5 Creedmoor is a popular hunting round and as the most specialized rifle in the family, it’s a great pairing with the Ruger Hunter.

Ruger 6.5 Creedmoor Rifle

Model: Hunter

Caliber: 6.5 Creedmoor

Capacity: 5

Finish: Matte Black Alloy Steel

Stock: Magpul Hunter

Barrel Length: 20”

Overall Length: 41.25” – 43.25”

Weight: 9.2 lbs

MSRP: $799

Ruger American 308 Rifle

.308 Winchester is a versatile cartridge but it’s particularly useful in compact rifles. While having solid power and reasonable size, it is one of the best rounds to use in moderately sized rifles. That’s why I really like the Ruger Compact in .308.

Model: Compact

Caliber: .308 Winchester

Capacity: 4

Finish: Matte Black Alloy Steel

Stock: Moss Black Synthetic

Barrel Length: 18”

Overall Length: 36.75”

Weight: 6 lbs

MSRP: $489

Ruger American 450 Bushmaster

Like 350 Legend, 450 Bushmaster is a fantastic round for dropping large game at long distances. I was disappointed to see that Ruger doesn’t offer a 450 Bushmaster in either their Predator or Hunter line but they do have a Ranch model chambered in 450. My issue with this is that The Ranch rifles are compact and I honestly wouldn’t hunt big game at long-range with these rifles.

Model: Ranch

Caliber: 450 Bushmaster

Capacity: 3

Finish: Matte Black Alloy Steel

Stock: Flat Dark Earth Synthetic

Barrel Length: 16.1”

Overall Length: 36”

Weight: 5.5 lbs

MSRP: $549

Ruger American 30 06

30-06 Springfield is a classic cartridge with a wide range of hunting applications. Again, I found myself disappointed that Ruger would only offer 1 rifle in the American series chambered in 30-06.

Model: Standard

Caliber: 30-06 Springfield

Capacity: 4

Finish: Matte Black Alloy Steel

Stock: Black Synthetic

Barrel Length: 22”

Overall Length: 42.5”

Weight: 6.2 lbs

MSRP: $489

Ruger American 223 Remington

.223 Remington is among the most popular and versatile hunting cartridges used to hunt a variety of game. Plus, its ability to be substituted with 5.56 in some cases makes it a great cartridge to use. While Ruger doesn’t offer .223 Rem rifles in their Standard, Compact, or Hunter series, there is a .223 Predator that is a solid firearm. The Predator series is fair, but the .223 Rem chambering fits the bill quite well for these rifles.

Ruger American 243 Winchester

Winchester’s .243 cartridge was built based on demand from hunters. The American hunting favorite can stabilize medium grain bullets designed to take down deer and other big game. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this cartridge was one of the most common among the Ruger American collection and can be found in the Standard, Compact, and Predator lines. Because it’s ideal for hunting, I like the .243 Predator model with its heavy, tapered, and threaded barrel.

Ruger American 270 Winchester

There’s a ton of debate between fans of .270 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield. While 30-06 came first, the .270 cartridge was built to offer flatter trajectories, less recoil, and higher velocities. As a result, 270 is one of the most popular long-distance shooting cartridges and is available in the Ruger American Standard Rifle series. I would have liked to see this cartridge in the Hunter series but I’m not surprised at this point

Ruger American 270 Winchester

Ruger American 300 Blackout

Ruger decided to put some of the most popular and exciting cartridges exclusively in the Ranch series. For example, 300 BLK shooters who are considering an American Rifle are extremely limited in their options. The 300 Blackout Ruger is compact and just doesn’t feel right. I like 300 BLK but it has to be employed in the right machinery and I just don’t think the Ruger Ranch rifle makes the cut.

Ruger American 300 BLK

Model: Ranch

Caliber: 300 Blackout

Capacity: 10

Finish: Matte Black Alloy Steel

Stock: Flat Dark Earth Synthetic

Barrel Length: 16.1”

Overall Length: 36”

Weight: 5.9 lbs

MSRP: $549

Ruger American Rimfire Series

While the original Ruger American series saw unimpressive success, Ruger decided to take their affordable rifle designs to the rimfire market. I believe they saw the potential in selling affordable rifles in rimfire especially for younger shooters and plinking enthusiasts. I love some good ol’ fashioned plinking and I don’t need to use my Bergara or Seekins Precision to shoot some targets for fun. So while I didn’t love the centerfire American rifles I could actually see myself owning a rimfire Ruger American. I believe they are far more practical than their centerfire brothers.

The rimfire collection comprises 5 different families, including the Standard, Compact, Target, Long-Range Target, and Wood Stock. The first thing I noticed was the difference in options, such as adjustable synthetic stock modules, magazine options, and new finishes. The rimfire series is currently offered in 17 HMR, 22 WMR, and 22LR, and we’re gonna look at the best rifle in each chambering.

Ruger American 17 HMR

17 HMR is arguably the best rimfire hunting cartridge thanks to its ability to shoot flatter at higher velocities at long-range. I like 17 HMR for varmint hunting and I think many shooters would agree that it’s useful to own one if you have pests. Unlike the centfire Standard model, the 17 HMR Standard rifle is actually a bit impressive. I could do without the Camo finish, but the highly adjustable stock, 9-round capacity, threaded barrel, and 60-degree bolt throw make this a solid weapon for under $500.

Ruger American 17 HMR

Model: Standard (Rimfire)

Caliber: 17 HMR

Capacity: 9

Finish: Bronze Cerakote Alloy Steel

Stock: GO Wild Camo Synthetic

Barrel Length: 18”

Overall Length: 38.4”

Weight: 5.9 lbs

MSRP: $469

Ruger American 22 Mag

Many people like to call 22 Magnum the quintessential ranch round and I can get behind that. It can handle varmint shooting accurately at up to 150 yards and it carries a better punch than 22LR while still being easy to shoot. The ammo is generally available and inexpensive plus 22 Mag isn’t the worst option for home defense. I liked shooting the Target model in 22 WMR because it was simple, intuitive, and extremely accurate. I had on a Burris Riflescope which cost nearly as much as the rifle, but it was a pleasant shooting experience that I can easily recommend.

Ruger American 22 Magnum

Model: Target

Caliber: 22 WMR

Capacity: 9

Finish: Satin Blued Alloy Steel

Stock: Black Laminate

Barrel Length: 18”

Overall Length: 37”

Weight: 6.7 lbs

MSRP: $499

Ruger American 22LR

There’s a thousand and one reasons to own a 22LR firearms, the only question is which one and how many. Whether you’re plinking or varmint hunting, I think it’s worth considering the Ruger American Rimfire Long Range Target Rifle. I happen to love shooting .22 but I think this rifle might be the best Ruger American Rifle on the market. While that may not be saying much, it is a quality firearm. It has good aesthetics, great ergonomics, fantastic accuracy, intuitive handling, and even decent durability (unlike many of these other rifles).

Israel has been manufacturing and designing weapons as a necessity even prior to the state’s inception. Its ingenuity in ammunition production and weapons design was essential in Israel’s ability to survive the 1948 Arab Israeli War when seven Arab nations attempted to wipe them off the map. During the war they were producing Sten guns among many other weapons. The effectiveness and ease of production of the sten gun is what led to Israel’s development of the famous Uzi Submachine gun. Israeli weapons are often born out of necessity, (see: the bottle opener feature on the Galil assault rifle). It was put on the biopod to save magazines which were the go to bottle opener for combat soldiers, and also wore out the magazines. The development of the tavor is no exception.

Urban combat is one of the most important aspects of modern warfare, a combat rifle needs to be able to function well in close quarters battle (CQB) as well as be able to reach out and hit targets at a long range. The Tavor hasn’t been in service very long and has already had feedback and redesigns since its first implementation. The birth of the Tavor X95 was first issued to Israeli Defense Force (IDF) troops in 2013 and was subsequently issued to three of their five infantry brigades. Join us as we take a closer look at this popular civilian rifle and Israeli military staple.

Israel Weapons Industries

Israeli Weapons Industries (IWI) has been an innovator of small arms for the past 80 years. It was founded in 1933 and was formerly state owned. It was privatized in 2005 at which time it was also renamed. IWI has unfortunately been a leading innovator out of necessity not in aims of profits, because Israel has been under constant threat from their neighbors. They say that necessity is the mother of invention and IWI is the perfect example of this fact. Their products range from assault rifles, shotguns, light machine guns, sniper rifles, side arms, grenade launchers, sights, and a multitude of weapons accessories. Additionally, IWI also offers security training and international consulting programs.

SMG X95 Variant

IWI Tavor X95

The IWI Tavor-21 and Tavor X95 are big steps in design for Israel because it’s the first time they have issued a bullpup standard issue rifle. Bullpup refers to the trigger assembly being in front of the magazine well. The gun is ambidextrous and can easily be changed for left-handed to right-handed shooters. It utilizes a long-stroke gas piston system similar to the AK-47 but bears little resemblance on the outside. All Tavors come with Picatinny rail systems on the upper receiver making mounting optics very easy.

Tavor X95 Flattop

The bullpup design makes the overall length of the weapon shorter while still having the same length barrel. It also moves the center of mass and weight of the firearm. It puts the bulk of the weight into the rear. Having most of the weight in your shoulder allows for better control of the weapon. The overall length and weight distribution of the firearm was designed with urban combat in mind. These factors make the Tavor, and X95 in particular, so popular and effective for home defense and modern warfare.

IWI X95 Rifle for Military

The X95 was designed with urban combat and CQB in mind. With regards to urban combat, it’s truly an ideal weapon. Its short overall length is great for maneuvering inside buildings and inside tunnels. The weight distribution in the rear of the gun makes taking corners a breeze. Taking a corner with the X95 is easier than with an M4 in my opinion, which is why it’s used in primarily in urban settings.

Tavor CTAR Integral

Where the weapon falls short is with CQB against someone with a knife. If someone attacks you with a knife while you’re carrying the X95, it’s awkward to block the knife attack, while not impossible, it’s inferior to defending a knife attack with an M4. The layout of a bullpup doesn’t make it suited as a blunt weapon in CQB. This is the exchange you have when you get an overall shorter weapon. For use by security forces who are under threat of knife attack, the M4 is preferable, which is what the IDF does the majority of the time. However, In a combat role when engaging targets in urban combat, the Tavor is superior.

X95 Tavor for Civilians

The Tavor is a great addition to anyone’s collection and would serve well as a home defense weapon. One major advantage of the X95 for civilians is that it takes AR-15 mags and its overall design is highly ergonomic. The civilian Tavor is produced in Pennsylvania and will cost about the same as a higher end AR-15. The X95 isn’t available in all states though because it has a shorter barrel than all states allow. The advantage to the X95 is that it can be converted to fire 9mm fairly easily and well-suited for a variety of civilian uses.

Tavor X95 5.56 NATO

Tavor X95 Accessories

The X95 9mm conversion kit would be a nice accessory to invest in if you were purchasing one. A red dot would also be advisable since the stock folding sights are only meant to be back ups. If the X95 is serving as a range mule, then any site will do. On the other hand, if it’s being utilized for home defense purposes then it would be worth investing in a quality sight that doesn’t require batteries. Something like the Mepro designed by IWI is ideal for the Tavor. If it’s being used for home defense, Murphy’s law should be taken into account. Nothing that might go wrong will go wrong and the day you’ll need it to defend you and your family, the batteries in your sight will be dead.

Tavor SAR vs X95

The Tavor SAR is a Tavor designed specifically for civilian use in the US. It’s designed to abide by states with stricter firearms laws and a few more bells and whistles to attract US private gun owners. They come with 16.5 inch barrel and 18 inch barrel. They also come in three colors black, OD green, and flat dark earth. They also have some variants that are sold with 10 round magazines to make them comply with stricter states guidelines on magazine restriction. Some US police departments have already adopted the Tavor SAR. Compared to the X95, the only real differences in the weapons are the barrel lengths, knuckle guard in front of the pistol grip, and the option of colors. The feeding systems, muzzle velocity, and actions are identical between the Tavor SAR and X95.

Tavor SAR 300BLK

IWI Tavor 7

The Tavor 7 is a variant that is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. This hasn’t been issued to troops yet, however it will likely serve as a designated marksman weapon. It’s also completely ambidextrous and is equipped with a Picatinny rail system on the upper receiver. There are currently two variants one with a 17 inch barrel & 28.7 inch overall length and 20 inch barrel with a 31.7 overall length.

IWI Tavor 7 Variant

Conclusion

IWI has been making innovative and quality equipment since their inception. The Tavor is no exception. The Tavor fills its role well of being an excellent urban combat rifle and smoothly transitions Israel from the M4 to a bullpup since they both take the same magazine. Bullpup weapons are logically the next step in firearms innovation and make sense in urban environments. In my humble opinion, its only faults are using it to defend against hand weapons due to its short overall length which isn’t something most militaries need to consider. Furthermore, the short overall length is an advantage in many situations. The weapon is being adopted by police in the US and special forces units across the globe and it’s no surprise why.

When it comes to firearms and movies, rifles aren’t as iconic as we initially thought. While iconic movie revolvers and shotguns were easy for us to compile, we actually had a hard time finding movies that wouldn’t be the same without their rifles. We gave it a try but we welcome you to share with us your picks for iconic movie rifles. As usual, we have a mix of sci-fi, modern, and historical weapons but we know this list is highly debatable.

M1903A4 Springfield

Saving Private Ryan is one of the most iconic WWII films ever made. The greatest film depiction of the D-day landings that has ever been made and an excellent depiction of the bond that war forges between men. One of the most iconic characters, scenes, and rifles in the film was that of the sharpshooters Private Daniel Jackson and his M1903A4 Springfield Rifle taking out a German Sniper.

Shooting the German sniper through his scope into his eye. A shot that was actually performed by America’s most renowned sniper of the Vietnam War Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, under slightly different conditions. The use of the M1903A4 Springfield gives a beautiful variation to the diversity of the weapons carried by the squad going to save Private Ryan.

The final battle of the film would be completely different without the sharpshooter taking out enemy soldiers from the bell tower while reciting bible verses. A masterfully iconic film with an iconic and not well-known firearm used in WWII is the perfect way to start off this list.

M16A1

A change in tone coming in at number two is the most iconic drug dealing movie ever made, with one of the most quoted lines from cinematic history. Close your eyes and you can picture Scarface saying “Say hello to my little friend” while firing a grenade launcher on the bottom of a Colt AR-15 converted to shoot full auto. The weapon was made to look like a M16A1 with an M203.

This weapon, scene, and line are so iconic that it’s ingrained in popular culture, copied, and quoted so many times I’m sure many Millennials don’t even know the true source of the line. Scarface would not be the same without the final shootout and the final shootout would not be the same without the use of this iconic weapon.

Say hello to my little friend

Even the double “jungle Style” magazines Tony has on the weapon adds to the overall intensity of the scene and character. Facing off against overwhelming odds and enemies, gallantly fighting to his last breath. Plus as a little fact for you, the weapon used in Scarface is the exact weapon later used in the first Predator film by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

AK-47

I’m usually not a fan of Nicolas Cage, and it kills me to put him on this list, but he was actually cast perfectly for this role as a slightly twitchy arms dealer. This film flawlessly showed how international weapons deals are conducted and how corruption is involved in getting weapons to conflict zones in poorer regions.

It’s so easy, even a child can use it, and they do.

The AK-47 is synonymous with conflicts across the globe, especially in Africa. The way Yuri (Nicolas Cage) describes the AK-47 in the film was very iconic. Finally letting the masses know what the A (Avtomat) and K (Kalashnikov) stand for in AK-47. The AK-47 is an iconic weapon that is so ingrained in so many nations’ history and countless conflicts. This film places the AK-47 in an iconic way that helps to explain why and how it has become so involved in the world’s history.

Mosin Nagant

One of the rare English speaking films about the battle of Stalingrad and the story about the legendary Soviet sniper Vasily Zaitsev. The Mosin Nagant rifle was the standard issue rifle of the Russian forces during WWI and Soviet forces during WWII. The M91/30 was a variant of the Mosin Nagant rifle with a bolt handle that is slightly angled down and a scope mount. If you’re looking for a film filled with iconic sniper duels look no further.

The film is based on the memoirs of Zaytev, where he mentions the three-day sniper duel he had against the German Major who was an instructor at the German Sniper school. However the only evidence that Major Erwin Konig ever existed comes from Vasily’s Memoirs. Looking past the likelihood of the entire story being Soviet War propaganda to boost morale, it’s still an iconic film and iconic rifle. The multiple sniper duels are solidified by the realistic choices of weapons, camouflage, and equipment used by both combatants.

Zorg ZF-1 Pod Weapon System

The Fifth Element is my favorite sci-fi movies of all time. If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it. Most of the special effects hold up well today and some are arguably better than movies that have come out recently. I won’t spoil anything but the acting, props, and story are all amazing. Plus, the weapons in this film are just familiar enough that makes a gun enthusiast comfortable and entertained, but new and exciting enough that you know the universe of the Fifth Element is not our own.

The pinnacle of this combination is the ZF-1 Pod weapon with its lightweight, ambidextrous titanium recharger, shot replay, rocket launcher, arrow launcher with explosive or poisonous heads, net launcher, flame thrower, and ice cube system design. The ZF-1 does not get enough screen time, but the screen time it does get makes it so memorable and iconic, after seeing the film you’ll never forget it.

Unfortunately the majority of these features are only shown during a demonstration of the weapon and never used in combat. This is likely because when would you really want an ice cube system or arrows in a real firefight. I had to do some research to discover that the ZF-1 was built over an Ak74SU and the original from the film was destroyed so the owner of the very expensive class 3 AK74 SU could get his gun back.

We review a lot of handguns and rifles sold at retail, but today we’re taking a look at a new type of firearm – one that isn’t legally considered a gun until you fabricate it at home. You might’ve heard of it before: The 80% lower receiver.

Turning an 80% Lower into a Rifle

Specifically designed for the modular AR-15 platform, the 80% lower is an unfinished, stripped lower receiver, the only part of the AR-15 considered a firearm in the eyes of the law. Usually made from billet or forged aluminum or polymer, the 80% lower is what the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) calls a “receiver blank”.

Receiver blanks are convenient because they aren’t regulated
like firearms. You can order one online, have it shipped straight to your home
with the requisite tools and parts, and build it yourself – all without having
to go through an FFL, paying extra fees, or shelling cash for high taxes.

Fabricating the Receiver at Home

You, the builder-to-be, must perform a few basic machining
operations on the unfinished lower: Cut the main cavity for the parts kit and
trigger, and drill the pin holes for the hammer, trigger, and safety. This is
performed with a gunsmithing workstation aptly named the 80% lower jig:

Fabricating a Lower Receiver

There are few jigs available with different features, but
they all use a set of hardened plates to “template” where the main cavity and
trigger slot of the receiver need to be cut. Included with the typical jig are
all the drill bits and end mill bits required, too. The main cavity is
completed by first drilling pilot holes, then removing the remaining material
by milling it with the included end mill bit(s). The measurements and depths
you need to cut are included with the instructions. Pre-drilled holes show
where to drill the hammer, trigger, and safety pin holes – no measuring
required.

80% Jigs: Tooling Overview

Jigs are categorized into two types, and you’ll pick your
jig based on the tools available to you:

Drill Press Jigs and Router Jigs.

Using a router jig allows you to cut the remaining material
like you would with a milling machine, making side-to-side movements and
increasing the cutting depth of the bit with every pass. Using a drill press
jig requires you to make plunge cuts by lowering the end mill into the cavity,
removing material vertically, and raising it before readjusting side to side.

“Which Jig is Best?”

Comparing Jigs

A router jig is quicker but using one
requires patience, frequent lubrication of the router and jig plates to
prevent binding and friction, and a steady hand. The end mill must be lowered
into one of the pilot holes while it’s spinning, which can be dangerous if
you’re not careful.

A drill press jig is
slower but affords better control. Using a drill press to make plunge cuts
eliminates the risk of the end mill kicking back or “nicking” the jig or
receiver walls that comes with using a router.

Total machining time with either method is usually around 2 hours for first-time
builders. Experienced builders can complete a typical receiver in less than one
hour. The bulk of the project centers on completing the cavity and trigger slot
for the parts kit, while drilling the pin holes takes a few moments.

Is All of This Legal?

Yes. Unknown to many gun owners, the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA) solidified a unique Second Amendment right:

“Firearms may be
lawfully made by persons who do not hold a manufacturer’s license under the GCA
provided they are not for sale or distribution and the maker is not prohibited
from receiving or possessing firearms. However, a person is prohibited from
assembling a non-sporting semiautomatic rifle or shotgun from 10 or more
imported parts, as set forth in regulations in 27 CFR 478.39.”

So long as you’re not building a weapon made from imported
parts (and you’re not building an NFA item, like a short-barreled rifle or
machinegun), then you’re in the clear.

NOTE: Some States Have Banned 80% Lowers

Although the practice is legal by Federal law and the ATF, states like New York and New Jersey have argued the 80% lower receiver is illegal to buy and build with, usually citing some state definition of what (incorrectly) constitutes an assault weapon.

How to Complete Your Build

Once your receiver is cut and drilled, you’ll be the proud
owner of a stripped AR-15 lower receiver – a functional firearm by the ATF’s
definition. With the finished receiver in hand, you can complete your build
using regular retail parts. A homemade lower is no different in form or
function than a store-bought lower receiver.

To complete your build, you’ll need the following components
or parts kits:

Lower Parts Kit

Buffer Assembly

Upper Receiver Assembly

Alternatively, preconfigured build kits now exist which include all the necessary components for building your rifle from scratch, minus the jig and tooling.

Preconfigured AR-15 80% Lower

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why build instead
of buy?

A: Many shooters
build AR-15s by purchasing a stripped receiver and piecing it together, like
you would with an 80% lower. But choosing to fabricate a receiver instead of
buying one may actually be less expensive: You don’t have to shell out money on
the background check and FFL fees, there are no special “firearm” taxes or
other bureaucratic fees that many states like to tack on, and you’re not paying
any dealer markup or retail margins.

While the jig is an added cost ($75 to $150), most are
reusable and so is the tooling. That means you can fabricate more than lower
with the same equipment. Most 80% lowers cost around $50 to $60, while most
stripped lower receivers start at $100 to $150 or more – that doesn’t include
the other fees (and really, who builds just one
AR?).

Q: Does my finished receiver
need a serial number?

A: At the Federal level (and for most states), no. An AR-15 or other firearm built for personal use does not require a unique serial number to be engraved or affixed on the lower receiver (the firearm) or anywhere else on the weapon. California does require your 80% lower to have a unique serial number issued before you start cutting and drilling.

Q: Can I sell my
homemade firearm?

A: Yes. There’s a
misconception that selling a gun you built constitutes manufacturing, which
would require having a Federal Firearms License (FFL). The ATF only says that
you cannot build a firearm with the intent
of selling it. Common sense says our intentions change over time. If you
wish to sell the weapon at a later time, this is legal. It’s a good idea to
serialize your receiver in this case, and you should conduct the sale through
an FFL with the buyer also performing a background check.

Q: What kind of
weapon can I build with an 80% lower?

A: The 80% lower
was designed for the AR-15 rifle and pistol chambered in 5.56 NATO or .223
Remington, though receiver blanks now exist for the DPMS-patterned AR in .308,
as well as 6.5 Creedmoor. Blanks now also exist for the 1911 platform and the
Sig Saur P320, and there is a Glock-compatible frame blank available, too.

Q: Are there any
special requirements for buying all this?

A: No. Because 80%
lowers aren’t considered firearms, they’re not regulated like firearms in any
way. Just like any other consumer product, you may purchase one (including the
jig and all necessary AR parts) online without special paperwork or other
requirements, and everything will ship to your home address. Some companies may
refuse shipments to a residence located in a state that has banned AR-15s, 80%
lowers, or other gun-making kits – just check your local laws first.

Q: Got any tips for
building?

A: When
completing the lower, use a lot of
cutting fluid or lubricant that’s designed for aluminum and tool bits. Before
you’re ready to pull the trigger for the first time, we recommend checking out
some of our other guides:

The Bushmaster ACR was supposed to be a gamechanging rifle that could be everything you could want and more, but did it live up to expectations?

The Bushmaster ACR (Adaptive Combat Rifle) was an attempt to take the AR-15 platform and fix some of the ergonomics, layout issues, and making it all around more modular of a firearm. The charging handle, magazine release, bolt release, and collapsible stock are much easier to reach and make it more user-friendly than an AR-15. All the controls are ambidextrous which is a massive improvement over the AR-15.

In addition to that, any layman can swap the barrel out of the ACR, allowing for caliber conversion kits to be swapped in with relative ease. There are conversion kits offered by Bushmaster to convert the ACR to chamber .450, 6.8, 300 Blackout, and 5.56. The ease of dropping in a conversion kit it’s easy to have a bolt and barrel outfitting with essentially any medium caliber cartage you’d like, I’ve also seen 7.62×39 and 5.45 conversion kits out there. Since the Bushmaster takes AR-15 magazines, any cartridge that has an AR-15 compatible magazine could have a conversion kit mocked up for the ACR. The barrels come ready to accept a suppressor and even have an adjustable gas piston system for suppressed and unsuppressed.

Bushmaster

Bushmaster is a company that has been around for the better part of 30 years. They are a well recognized and well-respected brand in the gun community and AR-15 world. Never known as the absolute best AR-15, Bushmaster is known as a dependable, reliable, and attainable company that makes quality affordable products. They developed their own round the .450 round that takes an AR-15 lower and made it into a large bore rifle. If you’re interested in using your AR to hunt big game. They also offer the .450 in the ACR.

Bushmaster ACR for Sale

ACR is a widely available rifle, many gun stores keep them in stock, and if you visit a gun show you’ll likely see them there. Buying a new one will not be cheap. They run $2,149 new for a basic model chambered in 5.56. Only going up in price the more attachments and features you add. For the cost of two quality AR-15s, you can get a more ergonomic, ambidextrous, and modular rifle. If you’re planning on filling your safe with a variety of calibers it may be more cost-effective to get an ACR and a few conversion kits.

Bushmaster ACR Enhanced

ACR enhanced is essentially the same firearm as the ACR basic except it has a rail system in the front ready to mount lights, bipods, grips, and other accessories. Other than that the internals of both weapons are exactly the same and all the other features are identical. If you live in a state where folding and adjustable stocks are illegal they do offer a static stock that doesn’t fold. You can even make an ACR California compliant with relative ease if you add a small attachment to the pistol grip, put on a static stock, and only put in a 10 round AR mag.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the ACR is a solid rifle that can fix several issues that plague the AR-15 platform, however, I feel like they really missed the ball with their ability to convert it to full rifle rounds. I am not an engineer, nor do I know why the designers didn’t make the ACR compatible with 7.62 NATO. But being that the idea of the rifle was to have it be modular they should have just expanded the magazine port and allowed it to fit 7.62×51 cartridges. Left-handed shooters would probably jump at the opportunity to get an ACR or they could just get the wipe array of bullpups out there that do the same thing for ambidextrous shooters for less money with a shorter overall profile and the same length barrel.
