Panzer Arms Availability

Panzer Arms is a Turkish-based gun manufacturer that has been producing hunting rifles and other firearms for around 50 years. While many shooters will question the integrity of a Turkish-made firearm, the American market has been largely impressed by Panzer Arms. While this may not attest to the quality of all Turkish guns, it safe to say that Panzer Arms has earned the title of a legitimate and trustworthy manufacturer.

Nevertheless, most people get these guns through an importer and many people choose Atlantic Firearms. However, there is an American Panzer Arms subsidiary called Panzer Arms USA. Keep in mind that because this is such a budget-friendly firearm, choosing an importer usually revolves around availability and less about finding the right price. This isn’t always the case with niche guns but the Panzer Arms guns are kind to the wallet.

The Panzer AR12 is basically an AR-15 shotgun and there aren’t many of those on the market. Being such a niche gun definitely adds to the appeal of this gun but it’s so interesting and affordable, I can’t imagine who wouldn’t want one. On the other hand, I didn’t have the most amazing experience with the similar Rock Island Armory VR80 but I was ready to give this AR-shotgun a chance.

Picking this gun up is very much like picking up your standard AR, even in its heaviness. The pistol grip, semi-adjustable synthetic stock, and full rail totally hide the fact this is actually shotgun. So I loaded 5 slugs into a magazine (which felt weird) and then I got the sense that this was more than just an AR-15.

The controls were intuitive and functioned perfectly. It was easy to load and unload and the handling was fantastic for shooting slugs. In practice, I really think this gun has the potential to be a great home defense gun. While it’s all fun and games at the range, this showed real potential for use as a defensive firearm. I love shotguns and I think there are many defensive applications for them. However, the Panzer AR12 gives you that but adds the control and tactical benefits of the AR-platform.

I love that there are multiple attachment points including swivel mounts because it really gives this gun a tactical edge. Panzer understands that while this gun is fun to shoot, it does indeed serve a functional purpose. That being said, I was a bit disappointed that there is a fake barrel shroud attached that is just for looks. It’s not a big deal, but this isn’t a damn toy. Aesthetics are important but I don’t want fake anything on my firearms.

The Panzer Arms AR12 Pro was not as exciting as I had hoped as it’s remarkably similar to the standard model. The primary difference is that the AR12 Pro features slightly different rails and an aluminum alloy receiver. While this may not seem like much, it does have a slight effect on performance. The added 3 pounds of weight of the reinforced receiver will help the firearm last longer but it also helps add stability and give the gun a more solid feel. I definitely wasn’t disappointed with Panzer Pro but I was hoping for more innovation.

So if you thought the original Panzer Arms AR 12 was a Frankenstein kind of gun, then meet the Panzer BP12 – The bullpup version of the AR-15 12 gauge shotgun. Like the AR12 and AR12 Pro, the BP12 is a tactical masterpiece with all the bells and whistles you’d want in a gun like this if you ever imagined such a thing.

For starters, I love bullpups because they’re super reliable, ergonomic, tactical, and fun guns to own and shoot. One of the most interesting components is that this baby is only 30″ long but has a 20-inch barrel. Yes, that means that there’s only 10″ not part of the barrel meaning this gun makes use of its space like a packrat in a studio apartment.

However, shooting the BP12 is surprisingly comfortable and intuitive if you’re at all familiar with bullpups. I really like that it’s ready to handle all kinds of optics and attachments plus it’s got built-in sling points and an angled foregrip which gives the gun superb handling. It’s a very natural feel that fits this firearm nicely. Plus, it’s an ambidextrous-friendly gun so they really put some thought into the controls of this system.

You’ll also notice that, like many bullpups, this long gun is supremely balanced which makes handling the gun that much easier. I also want to mention the stock with its adjustable comb and comfortable buttpad. This gun needed a top-notch stock and I think Panzer did a fairly good job with it.

Panzer Arms AR 12 Accessories

At the end of the day, the accessory options for the Panzer Arms AR 12 are nearly endless. They placed attachment points all over these long guns and made it one of the most tactical-friendly firearms on the market. These are definitely niche guns but they are functional, affordable, and a blast to shoot.

You can search for shotgun accessories or rifle accessories and you’ll find just what you’re looking for. Between lights, lasers, grips, and more, there’s no limit to how you can deck out your AR12. Personally, I think a side-mounted laser light is a sweet set up and it’s hard to beat Streamlight and their many tactical options. A reflex sight is also a great choice for tactical shooting with this gun and the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro Sight is one of the best money can buy.

In addition to that, any layman can swap the barrel out of the ACR, allowing for caliber conversion kits to be swapped in with relative ease. There are conversion kits offered by Bushmaster to convert the ACR to chamber .450, 6.8, 300 Blackout, and 5.56. The ease of dropping in a conversion kit it’s easy to have a bolt and barrel outfitting with essentially any medium caliber cartage you’d like, I’ve also seen 7.62×39 and 5.45 conversion kits out there. Since the Bushmaster takes AR-15 magazines, any cartridge that has an AR-15 compatible magazine could have a conversion kit mocked up for the ACR. The barrels come ready to accept a suppressor and even have an adjustable gas piston system for suppressed and unsuppressed. 

Bushmaster

Bushmaster is a company that has been around for the better part of 30 years. They are a well recognized and well-respected brand in the gun community and AR-15 world. Never known as the absolute best AR-15, Bushmaster is known as a dependable, reliable, and attainable company that makes quality affordable products. They developed their own round the .450 round that takes an AR-15 lower and made it into a large bore rifle. If you’re interested in using your AR to hunt big game. They also offer the .450 in the ACR. 

Bushmaster ACR for Sale

ACR is a widely available rifle, many gun stores keep them in stock, and if you visit a gun show you’ll likely see them there. Buying a new one will not be cheap. They run $2,149 new for a basic model chambered in 5.56. Only going up in price the more attachments and features you add. For the cost of two quality AR-15s, you can get a more ergonomic, ambidextrous, and modular rifle. If you’re planning on filling your safe with a variety of calibers it may be more cost-effective to get an ACR and a few conversion kits. 

Bushmaster ACR Enhanced

ACR enhanced is essentially the same firearm as the ACR basic except it has a rail system in the front ready to mount lights, bipods, grips, and other accessories. Other than that the internals of both weapons are exactly the same and all the other features are identical. If you live in a state where folding and adjustable stocks are illegal they do offer a static stock that doesn’t fold. You can even make an ACR California compliant with relative ease if you add a small attachment to the pistol grip, put on a static stock, and only put in a 10 round AR mag. 

Conclusion

In conclusion, the ACR is a solid rifle that can fix several issues that plague the AR-15 platform, however, I feel like they really missed the ball with their ability to convert it to full rifle rounds. I am not an engineer, nor do I know why the designers didn’t make the ACR compatible with 7.62 NATO. But being that the idea of the rifle was to have it be modular they should have just expanded the magazine port and allowed it to fit 7.62×51 cartridges. Left-handed shooters would probably jump at the opportunity to get an ACR or they could just get the wipe array of bullpups out there that do the same thing for ambidextrous shooters for less money with a shorter overall profile and the same length barrel.

I love a good AR-15. Accurate, manageable, reliable to all sorts of distances (depending on your setup). I love hearing the pings and twangs of hits, misses, and ricochets. Even after years, I’m still fond of the scent of spent cartridges, especially in an outdoor range and particularly in the summertime. Hold on to your hats, people, it’s our Rock River Arms review.

As you are undoubtedly aware, there are many companies competing for your attention and your hard-earned dollars. Sure, you have guys like Cimarron Firearms and others, who are so niche that they have some measure of well-earned exclusivity. Heck, Cabot Guns is selling 1911s made from a bonafide 4-billion-year-old meteorite. But when you’re talking about modern ARs, it’s really anyone’s game, and there are many options to choose from.

Whether we’re talking about a complete system, a build, or an upgrade to an existing weapon, the question is asked: should you use Rock River Arms (RRA) for your next endeavor?

Rock River Arms

A bit of history for context: this company was founded in 1996 by two brothers, Mark and Chuck Larson. As Rick and Morty would say, these two brothers… they have a strong bond.

Before they established their outfit, Mark and Chuck had been in the firearms industry for years, working with Springfield Armory and Eagle Arms, and also partnering up with Les Baer Custom, who are known for their quality 1911 pistols.

In the mid-’90s, the Larsons set up shop as Tolerance Plus in Illinois, and the business was later renamed Rock River Arms. RRA can now be found in Colona, Illinois in a state-of-the-art facility.

They primarily manufacture AR-style guns, pistols, uppers, lowers, parts and components, plus they also have some alternating specials and limited edition offers, as many companies do. They also produce 1911s. In fact, they started off as a 1911-making company in 1996, and only later did they branch out into AR territory, at the turn of the millennium.

As a company, RRA went through some controversial times, particularly in the summer of 2017 when a questionable gun law was passed in their home state. Rock River Arms took steps to distance itself from the incident, but some damage was definitely done during that time. Then again, I am aware that laws and guns are two different things, really, so I’d like to focus on their manufacturing abilities.

Generally, Rock River makes good rifles and pistols. I use the term “good” loosely because it really is subjective. They’ve been producing 5.56mm and 7.62mm models since the beginning of their AR-15 manufacturing, and that’s pretty standard. Later on, 9mm joined the party, as did 300 BLK. Recently, they introduced a pistol and rifle chambered in .22LR.

I mentioned the exclusivity of other companies, because some of them are really boldly going where no man has gone before. Rock River certainly is not doing anything too exclusive, although they do have proprietary actions and designs, and even a polymer 1911 (something which is not so common).

They manufacture quality weapons, and ultimately that’s what you want – quality you can depend on to perform. RRA’s most recent additions, which debuted at SHOT Show 2019, are the BT-9G and RBG-1S series.

Rock River AR 15

Their AR-15 line, which they named the LAR-15, is varied. There are multiple versions and configurations, but it’s pretty standard stuff when you get into the guts of it; and to be clear, that is not meant in a bad way as a put-down. I think they may go in different directions in the future, but for now, it seems they are content with using what works, and with manufacturing solid, respectable, well-put-together firearms. What more do you want from a firearms maker?

Ever since Eugene Stoner designed, released, and improved his AR system back in the mid 20th century, everyone and their mother has been using it and working off of it. It’s not by chance that the AR-15 was nicknamed “America’s Rifle”. It’s a tried, true, and tested weapons system, which is why so many companies are manufacturing them and their derivatives.

If you’re looking for a good model at a fair price, RRA is a safe bet. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to be successful – you need to provide value to your consumer and stand behind your product. RRA manage to do this for sure, and compared to others at their models’ respective prices, they deliver a good rifle which stands the test of time.

Obviously, there will always be those who claim RRA are nothing but “tactical bling”. I take issue with that. It’s one thing if you say a certain model or series is just for show, but to claim the entire company makes weapons which are “tacticool” and nothing more than that – I don’t agree. I think Rock River’s weapons are much more than that.

Here are the specs for the classic LAR-15:

It comes with a 6-position stock, A2 grip and flash hider, Picatinny rail top, and a single-stage trigger. They also have a two-stage trigger which many people are fond of, and which comes standard with some of their other models.

This base rifle is a good option for a US-made “budget” AR-15, but as always, you may be able to find cheaper versions. In fact, you can count on finding cheaper ones, but they may not afford you with the quality of Rock River Arms.

The LAR-15 has a nice and sleek monolithic look to it (although it is not monolithic), so if appearances are important to you, it is something to consider. Also, if you’re not into the “complete rifle” thing, their barrels are one piece of equipment which you should think about for your AR setup or build. Whether chrome or stainless, they are a viable option which will set you back some money, of course, but is worth the price.

Rock River Arms 1911

Ever since the mid-90s, when they first started, Rock River has been into the 1911 game. It comes as no real surprise, since they were partners with Les Baer, who make some of the best 1911 pistols around. Their 1911 models (aptly named RRA 1911) are all chambered in .45 ACP, and if I am not mistaken, they are considered to be more on the semi-custom line of the 1911  spectrum. They are more than your run-of-the-mill 1911 with drop-in-parts pistol.

There are several versions of the RRA 1911, as well as parts and components of all sorts. Their guns provide a 7+1 capacity, which is pretty standard for these types of models.

As I mentioned, there is also the polymer 1911, which some praise and others curse. There are those who feel that if Browning meant for it to be anything but steel, he would have designed it that way.

According to the company, they slowed down their production of 1911s around 2008, after they saw a significant rise in their AR sales. You gotta go with what works, you know? So they poured more focus into ARs for several years, and then reintroduced their 1911s later on, with the polymer model joining their lineup in 2014.

The frame and housing are indeed polymers, but it all rides on a stainless steel chassis. The points of locking are steel, which makes a big difference in the long run. The barrel is chrome-moly, and the grips are over-molded in rubber.

It will definitely not be everyone’s 1911 of choice, and the reasons for that are obvious, but overall this model represents an interesting take on a classic piece of American weaponry.

Conclusion

Rock River Arms is considered by some to be “middle of the road” and nothing more, but they do have some models which are significantly more than that. Their newer models certainly solidify what RRA fans have known for a while: that this is a company capable of making more than good AR-15 clones.

Hypothetically speaking, if I had to purchase a complete AR-15 sight unseen, I would be confident and comfortable with buying a model from RRA. They have a good reputation, many years of experience with a variety of people and companies, and also a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser. It has everything I would want or need, if I am an everyday shooter.

It comes down to the shooter, as always, and the intended use. Does it feel comfortable in your hands? Does it meet your expectations as far as ruggedness and accuracy are concerned? Are you impressed by the technical specifications, or do you find them wanting? There is so much that you can’t tell about a weapon until you physically hold it and actually fire it.

There’s an old joke:

Q: What’s the difference between an M16 and an AR-15?

Okay, I didn’t say it was good joke.

Moving on.

AR-15s are a phenomenon. I feel it won’t be long before some country places it on its flag, like Mozambique did with the AK-47. The AR-15 is that iconic, in my opinion, and it is certainly consistently popular. Some companies make it their business to take the AR platform to the maximum. One of those is Bravo Company USA, also known as Bravo Company Manufacturing or Bravo Company MFG (often abbreviated as BCM).

Bravo Company

Paul Buffoni is the founder and CEO of BCM. This company started off in 2003 as Buffoni’s e-commerce business, which he was running out of his home’s basement in Hartland, WI.

Some of the best enterprises in the world started as a side-thing in some dude’s basement, and that remains true to this day.

What began as a resale and retail company for quality brands, became a standalone operation which produced its own parts and components for firearms.

This shift took place at about 2005-6, when some civilians were experiencing trouble locating a well-constructed military-grade brand of weapons/components for their personal purchase and use.

The first item which Bravo Company USA designed and manufactured in-house (or perhaps designed by them and made off-site?) was barrels. This was closely followed by their own upper receivers and bolt-carrier groups, and later on a line of complete rifles made its appearance.

BCM stepped up to fill the void that was created in the market at that time, and they did so with the intention of providing customers with the best tools for the job.

Buffoni has stated that he doesn’t look at firearms as a sport, but first and foremost as a tool for enemy-engagement and self-defense. As a former serviceman, Buffoni knows the cardinal rule – you are brothers in arms.

People may call it ‘fighting for your country’, but when you are out there training, patrolling, guarding, charging forward, and taking fire – you are doing it with your fellow soldiers by your side, not the entire country.

With that in mind, Buffoni wanted Bravo Company to manufacture weapons which could be used by law enforcement and military personnel, and also lend themselves to civilian configurations.

BCM’s line of rifles includes a large selection of carbines, among other things. This has been their main focus, and it makes perfect sense. They wanted to take something good, and make it better.

The AR-15 was designed by Eugene Stoner as the standard issue infantry rifle. Its many incarnations and derivatives have been held by many thousands of our brothers and sisters in uniform, spanning decades. It’s one hell of a system, to say the least.

Bravo brought together a team which sought to give the AR-15 a serious upgrade. They weren’t looking to build anything from the ground up, so to speak, but rather to provide a lightweight system which could handle punishment.

Pure and simple. Buffoni has said that while his time in the Marine Corps was shorter than he wanted it to be, it taught him a lot about the nature of weaponry from a trained military end-user’s perspective.

BCM 11.5 Pistol

One of BCM’s most popular weapons is the RECCE 11 KMR-A pistol, which has been around since 2015. The company also offers this as a separate upper, but there is the possibility of purchasing the full system.

The major advantage of the AR pistol (generally speaking) is that is less of a hassle than a rifle, and it has some impressive ballistic capabilities compared to handguns. It is a nice combination or compromise between the two, managing to deliver a lot of value, accuracy, and dependability in a small package, AND without an SBR tax stamp.

The RECCE 11 is a straight up semi-automatic (direct impingement action), has an upper and lower forged from 7075-T6 aluminum, and the barrel is chrome-lined and 11.5 inches long.

As I said earlier, BCM aims to deliver a kind of upgraded weapon right off the bat and provides the shooter with a host of pre-installed quality BCM components: handguard, trigger, grip, compensator, charging handle, and more. BCM Upper

Some people are interested in purchasing a complete system, because they want all of the parts to fit together properly, and be part of a single cohesive unit. There are some advantages to buying everything under one roof, so to speak, but then again there are those who take great pleasure in building their own dream weapon, and this dream is often made up of different components.

A stock from this company, a bolt from that company, and so on. If you find a part you are comfortable with and which you know works to your advantage, use it.

I didn’t count them all, but according to BCM’s website there are over 200 models of upper receiver groups listed, in different configurations. Some of these are out of stock, but overall they have a large selection of uppers.

Bravo Company is well-known for its quality, so you know that unless something went wrong with the manufacturing process – and that is always a possibility – you are getting a good upper. Many consider the upper receiver group to be the heart and soul of a firearm, and I tend to go with that.

I mean, it has the bolt carrier and barrel, right? Regardless of what legally constitutes a “firearm”, the upper is essential to say the least, and this why it is so worth the investment.

Bravo Company Accessories

BCM Gunfighter operates out of Las Vegas, NV. It is BCM’s research and development facility, which has produced and distributed BCM’s in-house components for over 15 years. The first Gunfighter product was the BCM charging handle, and that line of accessories quickly expanded to include grips, triggers, stocks, rail systems, compensators, mounts, magazines, and many other necessities.

Recently (2018), BCM came out with the second generation of Gunfighter charging handles, which I saw as a nice way of coming full circle. As with the complete rifle systems and the receivers, BCM’s components are considered a household name in the firearms world. People trust their parts and systems because they have proven themselves, and that is no small feat.

The company’s accessories are not limited to AR-style weapons. There are also accessories for Glock, 1911, Smith & Wesson, and other brands. Certain accessories are available in KeyMod, M-LOK, and Picatinny configurations.

According to Buffoni, the company’s best-selling products are the KMR handguard and the charging handle, both for the AR-15. With each new year, BCM manages to grab the attention of the shooting world, by being up-to-date and on point.

Conclusion

Boy, some companies get bashed around. It’s not always warranted or fully justified. I also don’t doubt that some customers are genuinely disappointed with quality or service at one time or another, and it turns them off completely to the company at large. Happens all the time.

Nevertheless, I feel Yankee Hill Machine (YHM) is one of those companies who elicits negative responses from some folks, from the get go. Is it the name? Are you not a Yankees fan? What’s the deal? This company is well-known for its selection of AR-15 accessories and components, and it has been in business for decades.

AR-15 components are their specialty, though they also manufacture complete rifles and AR pistols.

In 1951, Wallace Judd & James Graham opened a machine shop in Leeds, MA. Later on, in the 60s, they were chosen by the government to design and produce cleaning rods for the military’s M16 rifles. The duo moved to nearby Florence and set up shop as Yankee Hill Machine.

In the 70s, the business was incorporated into a full-fledged company. Close to 50 years have gone by, and the Grahams are heading the outfit, with James Graham’s grandchildren at the helm.

It’s a classic, good ol’ American tale of success, if you ask me, and it’s part of why I love this country. *Cue the cheesy inspirational music*
Of course, there is always the possibility that some back-alley transaction or shady bargain was struck to secure that initial government contract… but we don’t have to go down that road.

The company’s main focus is, and always was, the AR-15 platform. YHM’s designers and engineers have worked hard to improve the system which Stoner designed, accentuate its strengths, hone its abilities, and provide the shooter with a superior type of rifle and a finer shooting experience.

YHM also sells suppressors, and these have been popular ever since they began manufacturing them in the mid 2000s. To their credit, these silencers tend to be appreciated even by those who don’t particularly care for the rest of their stuff.

The company entered the firearm-manufacturing arena in 2008, when they came out with their first complete AR-style rifle, the YNH-15. They innovated further with the improvement of their upper and lower receivers, and more recently they have introduced their Modular Aluminum Rifle Chassis (MARC).

YHM Suppressor

Suppressors are legal in most states. The addition of a suppressor to a pistol or rifle is usually done for several reasons:

• Guard one’s hearing
• Reduce recoil
• Attain greater accuracy
• Better mask the shooter’s location

Silencers are perceived by some to be a dangerous addition, but this is primarily due to the ongoings of Prohibition-era criminals, and the way that suppressors were used back then. The American justice system, its law enforcement agencies, and its federal regulations have a good memory, indeed, but this doesn’t mean that suppressors are innately evil, and they are certainly not unimportant. In a close-quarter type of situation, for example, a silencer can be of great use.

YHM’s suppressors first came out in 2005. Ironically, Massachusetts is one of the states where suppressors are still illegal. YHM is making sincere efforts to change the laws in MA, but introducing new legislation can be a slow and arduous process. In the meantime, the company is providing shooters with affordable suppressors for their pistols and rifles, complete with a quick detachment system. Here are some of their most popular silencers.

Turbo 5.56

Designed for your everyday 5.56mm rifle, the full-auto rated Turbo is 6.5 inches long and weighs 13.5 oz. It is constructed from 17-4 stainless steel – known for its ruggedness and durability – and heat-treated inconel 718 (a superalloy). Comes with a flash hider. MSRP $489.

Incidentally, a new type of inconel (introduced by Elon Musk’s company) recently made headlines, since it is being developed for rocket engines used in the aerospace industry. Those things are tough!

Resonator

Built for 7.62mm (.30 cal) systems, this silencer features an overall length of 7.8 inches and it weighs 16 oz. Constructed from the same materials as the Turbo, it is also full-auto rated and affordable. MSRP $630.

Sidewinder

Available for 9mm, .40 caliber, and .45 caliber pistols, the Sidewinder was first introduced in 2015. The inside and out is made of T6 aluminum (7075 inside, 6061 outside – if I am not mistaken), as well as heat-treated 17-4 stainless. Like the others, it is also full-auto rated. At 7.8 inches  (9mm model) or 8.7 inches (.40 and .45), and weighing in at approx 10 oz, it is an affordable, reliable, user-serviceable can. MSRP $699.

Not every shooter feels he or she require a suppressor on their firearm. Likewise, not everyone sees it as a justified expense. But I can tell you from experience that should you require to fire a round – particularly indoors – this thing can save your ears and aid in preventing long-term damage. While it is true that sound-suppression is not a necessity for using the firearm, it is a most welcomed safety measure.

By the way, some avid shooters have found that it actually tightens their groups, contrary to what others believe. But this is as subjective as it comes, and it changes from one set of circumstances to another. Furthermore, the additional length and weight ma deter some people, but these are usually mitigated through proper usage and practice.

Yankee Hill Machine MARC

YHM’s Modular Aluminum Rifle Chassis (MARC) first made an appearance in SHOT Show 2019, and it is the company’s first foray into the bolt-action firearms market. According to Co-owner Kevin Graham, YHM sought to get into the mix, seeing as how the AR-15 market is slowing down somewhat, and more shooters are getting into competition shooting.

Constructed of 6061-T6 aluminum, The chassis is patterned for the Remington and Savage types of rifles, in their short and long actions. The basic MARC has a MSRP of $499, and some models are already available for purchase (others will be made available in the near future).

True to its name, it is modular. This chassis features interchangeable components, which allows for a high degree of customization, and makes it that much more functional for a wide range of bolt-action shooters. Bolt-action rifles are already known far and wide for their accuracy, and with the help of the right kind of chassis, this can seriously up your game.

Conclusion

They say that if something is too good to be true, it probably is. Yankee Hill Machine manages to provide quality stuff without going insane on the price. If their products were being sold at ridiculously low prices, I’d be suspicious. But no. They offer barrels, rifles, receivers, pistols, accessories, suppressors, and now chassis.

There is a good reason why shooting is called a sport. Several reasons, actually. Sports, in essence, are about the ever-present exchange of power, the constant conversion of energy, and the validation (in some cases – the triumph) of life over death. Feel free to disagree with my assessment, by the way.

When you are holding machines of raw mechanical power and deadly potential; when you are squeezing that trigger once you zero in on your target; there is a nanosecond, a tiny point in space and time, where man and machine meet, just before the cartridge is affected and subsequently launched. This is why I enjoy shooting so much, and this is why so many people are getting into competitions.

All of this high and mighty talk has been to illustrate a point: it’s fun to shoot. Seriously. Whether suppressed or not, whether you’re shooting with a direct impingement action or bolt action, and whether you are competing or training to defend yourself and your home – YHM has a lot to offer.

First off, Olympic Arms is still open for business. Partially, anyway. This is an in-between time for them, as they are working on restructuring their company and transitioning into new ownership. This is what they stated in their most recent press release, dated December 2018.

We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for this veteran AR-15 manufacturer. Perhaps this new ownership will work out in their favor. Let’s take a look at some of what they’ve been doing so far.

Olympic Arms

Olympic Arms is not affiliated in any way with the international Olympic Games, by the way. Just in case you had any doubts.

The founder of Olympic Arms is Robert Schuetz. He first established Schuetzen Gun Works in 1956, in Colorado, where the company produced barrels. In 1975, the outfit changed location to Olympia, WA, and concurrently changed its name to Olympic Arms. It began designing and producing complete firearms, rather than just components.

Olympic manufactured AR-15s and 1911s for a long time, and later on, they added the Whitney Wolverine to their lineup. Their reputation has been hit and miss, really, largely due to one or two oversights which set the company back and disappointed their customers. There are times when a manufacturer can bounce back and get back in the game, but even then there are those who will forevermore consider the brand to be junk.

The company produced their own parts and components in-house, and overall it had some quality firearms available for civilians, law enforcement, and military personnel.

Olympic Arms AR 15

M16-pattern rifles and AR-15s – this was what Olympic has been producing for a long time. I know, I know – everyone on planet Earth seems to be manufacturing their version of the AR-15, so do we really need another one?

Well, that is a fair question, but the thing with Olympic Arms is that they were one of the first manufacturers (other than Colt) to make AR-15s to begin with. They are one of the OGs in this business, they’ve made some great AR-15 clones, and have been around long before the market was so saturated with such models.

There were times when their rifles were simply not good ones. Case in point: one of the worst moves that Olympic made – or so many shooters feel – was to make cast receivers, as opposed to forged ones. That move is probably what got them the most negative feedback over the years, and it was a business decision which caused them to be branded as a garbage, despite their solid efforts afterwards.

Here is a quick glance at some of Olympic’s line of AR-15s. Note that some of these models have been discontinued.

• M4 models
  • K3B-M4
  • K3B-M4-A3
  • K3BM4-FT
  • K3BM4-A3

These are offered in a variety of configurations (buttstocks, handguards, uppers, grips, capacity) and there is also the possibility of attaching a grenade launcher or flare launcher.

  • K3B-11
  • K3B-14

These are short-barreled rifles, meant specifically for law enforcement personnel. The length of the barrels ranges from 6.5” to 14.5”, and they are not available for civilians.

• AR-15 Carbine models
  • PPC Plinker Plus Compact
  • PPFT Plinker Plus Flat Top
  • Multimatch ML2

With a 16” barrel, and chambered in either 223 Rem or 5.56 NATO, these are entry level rifles.

• 20-24” models
  • UMAR-22250 (chambered in Magnum 22-250)
  • UMAR-22250F Fluted
  • UM-1P Target-shooting model
  • UMAR-300 (cambered in 300 OSSM)
  • PP20 Plinker Plus 20”

These are all models which sport a 20-24” barrel. Particularly intriguing, in my opinion, was their .22-250 chambering. For a while, it was the only AR to be chambered in that caliber.

The thoughts on these rifles tend to be all over the place, especially since some people will insist that Olympic is no good. While it is true that they are not on the same level of some higher-end manufacturers, that is precisely the point: they were never meant to compete with those gun-makers. They wanted to provide the public with cheaper, American-made options. This they have succeeded in doing, to a great degree.

A cheaper price does not always reflect much cheaper quality. Many shooters who have worked and trained with Olympic Arms ARs over the years report that these guns work flawlessly. It is natural for some customers to encounter issues, be they with the gun or  with the service. I am not focused on isolated cases here, though they undoubtedly exist. I am attempting to look at the company and its products as a whole.

As said, the MSRPs are these rifles are on the cheaper end, some costing less than $600. For that price, you get a standard rifle with standard furniture. You can then choose to invest another $100-200, and build it up as you see fit. As an entry-level rifle, these work and they do their job. Are they the best in their category? No, and they are not marketed as such.

Olympic Arms K Series

The K series includes a variety of AR-type rifles, and the sub-series K8 and K16. The calibers being offered are 5.56 NATO, 6.8 Rem, 300 BLK, 7.62X39mm, and 204 Ruger. The K-series barrels range from 16” to 20”, and what sets the K16-series rifles apart is their factory features, which include bull barrel, flat top upper receiver, free floating handguard, and the A2 buttstock. They have a MSRP of roughly $800, and for that price it is a good deal.

Conclusion

This is a manufacturer which has pioneered some of the innovations we now take for granted with a AR-15 setup. The firearms which Olympic has produced may have gotten a bad reputation over the years, but it is not always justified. There are many examples – brought forth by those who have handled their weapons – where Olympic has been reliable, affordable, and highly functional.

Olympic doesn’t really build competition rifles, so it is safe to assume that we are talking about training and practicing for self-defense and home-defense situations. I believe in second chances, but I know what it’s like to feel as though a weapon has utterly failed you. It is difficult to trust a brand which has let you down – certainly in this industry -, since you are essentially trusting this firearm to save your life or the lives of others. And it is not an easy choice, considering Olympic Arms’ past. It’s not exactly your go-to rifle, and definitely not in these days when it is restructuring.

Are manufacturers not allowed to make mistakes? Surely, no one is claiming that. But it is the way in which they deal with those mistakes that makes them reputable manufacturers in the eyes of the public. In that sense, Olympic has been very forthcoming with their information, and they are not trying to pass themselves off as something they are not. Or so I feel, anyway. Your mileage may vary.

If you should get your hands on an Olympic rifle, give it a try. You may find it to be accurate, dependable, and in your price range. It is definitely more on the “budget-friendly” end of the AR-15 spectrum, so take that into account. There are other brands in that lower-tier which may attract you more (think American Tactical Imports and their line of $400~ AR-15s).

With such a varied range of views, opinions, and experiences, it comes down to individual taste and budget. Maybe more so than in other cases, since some praise Olympic Arms firearms for their accuracy and affordability, while others lament the day they came near one of their firearms. Like I said, perhaps the new ownership which is in the works will be able to give us a clearer picture of the brand.

The AR-15 was developed in the late 1950’s and scopes became available almost immediately. Ever since the rifle was introduced, many people – and companies – were interested in increasing its effective range with use of various optics. The older M16 units had a carrying handle, and scopes were mounted there. Accurate, but not too convenient. The M4 flat-top was a welcomed game changer.

In the past, unless you were military, your options were somewhat limited. Nowadays there are so many brands, you get lost just thinking about it. A scope – or some other type of optic – is considered to be a part of any proper AR configuration. Backup sights are always recommended, by the way, but a scope or red dot can really widen your options.

Shooters around the world attach a scope to their rifle since it provides them with the potential for an increased range, and because it makes them that much more accurate. To be clear, an optic won’t magically turn you into a better shooter. You still need to put in the time and effort to maximize its potential. But yes, a scope is often a reliable and faithful companion, whether you are out hunting, competing, or simply honing your skills.

Best AR 15 Scope

The best AR scope is the one which fits you, your rifle, and the task at hand. Cliche, but true. Example: there would be no reason to invest in a heavyweight scope, for instance, if your goal is to create a seriously lightweight carbine. There would be no need to purchase a scope designed for exceedingly long ranges (e.g. 8.5-25X50), if you will only be shooting at targets 200 yards away. You get my point. Money and magnifying power are not the be all and end all of this business.

You need to know what you are sacrificing when you decide to purchase a scope, because chances are you will be sacrificing something. There are times when the scope’s ability to provide you with long-range precision will compromise your visual perception at close range. Again, it is all about what it is exactly that you are shooting at.

Also, let’s not forget that unlike sights, scopes are lenses which require some type of eye relief. If you are not a certain distance from the eyepiece, you will not be able to see (and consequently shoot) properly.

So, what are some of the best scopes out there right now? Brands such as Vortex, Leupold, Nightforce, Nikon, Burris, and Bushnell never go out of style. They manage to consistently provide customers of all sorts with top-notch equipment. They are not without faults, of course, but they have a great reputation, and rightly so.

The best AR scope will be one which is A) durable, B) has magnifying capabilities that match your needs, and C) is within your price range. In other words, you need to do some research, and take your rifle and intended-use fully into account.

AR 15 Tactical Scopes

The word ‘tactical’ is thrown around a lot by writers and shooters alike. Perhaps I myself am also guilty of the occasional over-use. So let me make it clear that when I say “tactical scopes”, I mean ones which are/were based on military models, or ones which were originally made for the civilian market, but which manifest some of those military-use characteristics.

A tactical scope will usually be heavier and larger than ordinary scopes. Some tactical scopes have a different kind of reticle (or a set of reticles), meant to be used under various circumstances. Sometimes the turrets will be exposed – for quick on-the-fly adjustments -, unlike their civilian/hunting counterparts. Another difference will be price – tactical scopes which are actually tactical, tend to be more expensive.

Examples of some of the more popular tactical scopes :

• Trijicon ACOG 4X32
• Leupold VX-1 3-9X40
• Nikon P-223 3-9X40

And I will also add one here which is less popular, due to its higher price point, but it is a quality item which deserves some recognition.

• Swarovski Z6i 1-6X24

Swarovski has some of the best glass in the business, and this model also has night vision capabilities. Which brings us to…

AR 15 Night Vision Scope

Low light conditions can be highly problematic, no matter how good you are. If I have said it once, I’ve said it a million times: you can’t take aim at what you can’t see. You could bet on your odds and take a shot in the dark (pun intended!), but in general, you want to be able to actually see the target when you are shooting at it.

Night vision options certainly raise the bar, budget-wise. There is no getting around this. Unless you know a guy who knows a guy (you know what I mean…), you are going to pay a pretty penny for a scope with good night vision capabilities, especially if it is a longer range scope. However, for night vision-capable scopes with a range of under 100 yards or so, there are many more affordable options.

Companies which make quality night vision scopes include ATN, Armasight, Burris, and Pulsar. Some use thermal imaging, some use more traditional methods. There are many differences between the two, and again – your intended use and specific circumstances will point you at the better and more effective choice.

Best Scope For AR 15 Under $100

You could argue whether or not it is even worth it, buying a scope for under $100. I am of the opinion that it most certainly is worth it, you just need to know what to expect, and more importantly what not to expect from a cheaper scope.

It is important to note that even if the scope you choose is a cheaper price, it should still do its job and be relatively durable. It doesn’t need to be a big brand name, it doesn’t need to be expensive, it doesn’t need to be made of the finest materials – but it does need to perform.

Here are some of the best scopes for under $100, in the short to medium range:

• UTG 3-9X32 BugBuster
• UUQ 2.5-10×40
• BARSKA 3-9X42 IR
• Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn 3-9X40

The different specs and details vary, of course, but overall these are four pretty reliable items which you can check out. They may not be a good fit for your specific needs, but on the whole they deliver on their promise.

Conclusion

The one major thing to understand about scopes – whether for the AR-15 or not – is that there is no one-size-fits-all kind of deal. If there is, well, it is probably too good to be true. It is all about finding the right tool for the job. Any given set of conditions or circumstances may call for a different kind of optic, so you’ll have to go with the one which best matches your intended use.

The scope is one of the most important things on your rifle, so make sure to buy a quality one which is within your budget. The prices for the higher-quality optics tend to get pretty high pretty fast. But, even so, that doesn’t mean you should immediately go for the most expensive one on the market. Take your needs into consideration, and see what works for you.

For things like hunting, long-range shooting events, competitions, or defense against targets which are further away – you can’t beat a good scope. Although, to be fair, there are shooters which manage to stretch the capabilities of their red dot sights, thanks to their skill and modern technology.

Scopes will always be a favorite of long-range shooters. Your AR-15 will not only look badass, but it will also perform better at those longer distances. It will become an inseparable part of your rifle’s setup, providing that you get used to the additional weight, and that you train with your scope and (ideally) with your backup sights as well.

Franklin Armory is a relative newcomer to the U.S. market and the firearms industry in general. Established in 2010, in California, it is a company which specializes in triggers, assemblies, and a variety of complete firearms. In 2013, Franklin moved its headquarters to Nevada, in the wake of the seemingly-unending and ever-limiting gun laws being passed in the Golden State.

While Franklin may be considered by some to be the green and inexperienced “new kid on the block” – and hence not worthy of too much interest just yet – the armory has earned respect and garnered plenty of attention in the firearms industry, by releasing a few truly unique and innovative devices or products. At this year’s SHOT show (2018), they wowed the crowd with the unveiling of their newest project, the “Reformation”. But more on that later. Right now, let’s take at some of the other innovations which have made this company a real asset to the industry and its followers and advocates.

Franklin Armory Binary Trigger

Franklin’s binary trigger is nothing short of a revolution. The idea is simple enough to understand: a normal trigger pull causes a chain reaction resulting in a shot being fired. With the binary firing system (BFS) trigger, however, two shots are fired almost consecutively – one when you pull the trigger, the other when you release it.

The company’s binary trigger has been around since 2015 and has gone through several evolutions. A new one (the BFSIII, designed for AK-47 platform) will be coming in 2019, and there will undoubtedly be more to follow. Meanwhile, pre-orders for the new AK BFSIII have begun, with the presale going online in October 2018. I am actually very interested to see how it will measure up against the previous models. This will make civilian AK platforms even more attractive, and I think it is safe to say we will see a surge in videos and photos of binary AKs, once the system gets to consumers’ hands.

Franklin has been able to avoid legal issues with the Feds, which is commendable. As long as one projectile is fired with each trigger function, there is nothing out of the ordinary with the BFS, and it is not a firearm in and of itself. It behaves just as an ordinary fast-pulled trigger would, which is within the confines of the law. Still, it takes a certain kind of mind to engineer such technology, and a crew of dedicated workers to follow through with it. The BFS was scrutinized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) for a while before it got the green light, but eventually, it did.

Franklin Armory Complete Firearms

Franklin is a manufacturer which produces assemblies and systems primarily for the AR platform. The AK BFSIII which is about to be released may be a sign of the times ahead. Could it be that Franklin are heading in other directions, and will they manufacture more AK-friendly items? Time will tell on that one.

The firearms which Franklin Armory produces are split into groups. Some of them are forged, some are machined, but they are all of high-quality materials, and are all developed and hand-built in the United States. This accounts for their relatively higher price. But I honestly feel that in this case, the words “you get what you pay for” are doubly true.

One thing that makes Franklin and its firearms stand out, is the way that the armory is able to build weapons which are in compliance with certain government restrictions. After all, they started in California! But this is what makes them so unique: they are innovative, and their engineers find ways and means of working around limiting regulations in certain states and still manage to deliver a proper weapon. Franklin set itself apart by appealing first and foremost to states with more constricting gun laws, making it easier for those who live in those states to exercise their Second Amendment right to the fullest extent of the law.

Franklin Armory F17

The series which Franklin Armory titled ‘F17’ has been around since 2014. When it came out, the first gun in the series (F17-L) was celebrated as being the only piston-driven semi-auto AR-platform firearm chambered for the .17 Winchester Super Magnum (WSM) cartridge. That cartridge was released by Winchester two years beforehand, and since then there have been several other models of F17 that joined it.

The F17 series is also unique due to its custom-built bolt-carrier, as well as a proprietary magazine. It is built like an AR and has the overall look of an AR, but it functions a little differently because of Franklin’s alterations to the original idea.

Nowadays, the F17 series includes the following models:

With battle-proven stocks, sights, and grips made by respectable companies, and proprietary additions such as the assemblies and custom-tuned triggers, it is easy to see why the F17 series is such a breath of fresh air.

There are those who have said that the AR platform is dying, that it has been played out, reached its limit, and has basically been subjected to everything by now. Franklin proved them wrong, in my opinion. There is still a lot of merit to this reliable platform, and the fact that new-wave weapons manufacturers are still using it as a base for their new and improved technologies and systems is indicative of its timelessness and efficiency in the field or at home.

Now look… I want to see those Star Wars-style blasters make an appearance (not to mention lightsabers!) as much as the next guy, but right now we have to use the tools that are available when they are available. And this means these companies are getting to work, and rather than reinvent the wheel, they put a positive and innovative spin on an older wheel. The F17 is not a brand new idea, but it is certainly a new take on an older idea. And it works.

Franklin Armory SBR

There are currently two models of rifles which qualify as an SBR in the Franklin Armory catalog, and as such they are controlled by the National Firearms Act and are restricted or otherwise prohibited in certain states. These firearms are the 11.5” LIBERTAS, and the 7.5” PDW.

Reformation

Not quite a rifle nor a shotgun, the Franklin Reformation line of firearms made its initial debut in 2018’s SHOT show and caught the attention of many visitors and enthusiasts. There is no rifling in the barrel, and because of that, no spin is put on the projectile when it exits the bore.

Several months before SHOT, in August 2017, the ATF released a statement confirming what Franklin was going for: an NSR (not a shotgun or rifle) firearm, which cannot be categorized as a rifle or a shotgun, and hence falls under no relevant NFA-related regulations, requires no tax stamp, and no special authorization for traveling out of state.

According to Franklin, this revolutionary firearm – and its corresponding projectile – will debut in 300 Blackout, followed by 5.56 NATO.

MSRP $1034-2094, depending on the Reformation model in question.

Conclusion

Franklin Armory is making a name for itself, and fast. They have been working hard, and this is evident from their innovations. They pride themselves in designing, engineering, and manufacturing their firearms in the United States, and that is certainly something to take into consideration.

I am not saying that other countries haven’t the tools or know-how – far from it – but there is something unique about an all-American firearm. This country was fought over, its citizens were at war with each other, and there are those who are trying to take the U.S. down in this day and age as well. Buying a weapon from an American company is not something which we should take for granted. Does it cost more? Yes. Is it worth the price? That question can only be answered by the consumer. Do your research, get your hands on some of their weapons, and see for yourself.

The Franklin lineup is impressive and solid, and I sincerely hope that this Nevada-based company will keep on wowing on for years to come.

Savage MSR 10 Hunter

The Savage MSR 10 Hunter offers all of the features shooters love about AR-10s, but in a compact and modern build. In addition to its high-end materials, such as Melonite QPQ finish, nickel-boron treatment, and 7075 aluminum receiver, the Hunter offers tremendously versatile performance with each use. I will say that I was surprised that they outsourced a few components, like the BLACKHAWK! KNOXX AR Pistol Grip and trigger.

I recently got the chance to take out the Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor to take down some big boar and it operated flawlessly. Although they are completely different rifles, shooting the MSR 10 reminded me of the .308 Ruger American. The Savage rifle had intuitive controls, excellent handling, and was extremely well-balanced.

I should warn you that while they only manufacture a small selection of firearms, they offer an insane variety of customizations. That being the case, their catalog is practically limitless. Skeletonized AR 15

The F1 Skeletonized AR-15 is the Texas-based manufacturer’s premier firearm and for good reason.
