The STEN gun was submachine gun helped to defeat the Nazi during the Second World War and spawned several variations on the submachine gun platform. Its side loading magazine was consistent with the British tradition at the time of having ease of reloading when in the prone position. It was used by British Commonwealth forces during World War II and Korea, and by over 50 other nations in over 30 conflicts in a variety of different variants.

Over 4 million were produced in various versions starting in 1940. It was also used by countless resistance groups as a highly effective insurgency weapon. The STEN gun was born out of necessity, following the British evacuation at Dunkirk where a lot of equipment was abandoned, the British Army was in desperate need of war material.

The demand for submachine guns was not met by the purchase of Thompson submachine guns from the United States, especially after the US entered WWII at the end of 1941. British Commonwealth forces needed a submachine gun. This necessity bread the adaptable, cheap, and easy to manufacture STEN gun.

STEN Gun for Sale

There are many STEN guns on the market today, several countries in a variety of variants have been produced since the submachine guns inception in 1940. Finding an original mark I may be difficult since only 100,000 were produced, these differ in their wooden grips and flash suppressor.

The Mark II had over 2 million produced during WWII, are void of the wood finishing and flash suppressor. A wide variety of other countries produced variants because the Sten was such an easy gun to make, there are a lot of Polish STEN Guns on the market.

The STEN is not the cheapest submachine gun on the civilian market today, it is a piece of history, but the cost of a semi-automatic version will not break the bank. A full-auto variant will cost you about double that of a semi-automatic STEN gun.

STEN Gun Kit

For self-assembly from a parts kit, you will need a small drill press, a Dremel tool, and a little welding. Kits are available online or at many gun stores, the ease of production made the supply of gun kits high. The majority of the kits sold online will not come with a receiver so it is not technically a firearm.

Building your own STEN gun will cost you about a quarter of what an assembled one will. Assembly does not take much precision workmanship or gunsmithing knowledge. The simple design makes them easy to build, which is one of the reasons for their popularity to begin with.

STEN Gun Parts

Bolts, springs, and accessories are widely available and reasonably priced. Most are originals and heavily coated in oil to preserve them. Reproduction parts are also available. The original recoil springs were designed to be interchangeable with bedsprings from the 1940s to make production easier. The imprecise nature of the firearm makes replacement parts easy to come by. 

WWII

The STEN was a very cheap and easy to produce submachine gun. It was very easy to maintain and had little need for upkeep, if your STEN worked. Due to the magazines which required a more precise mag-well, they were prone to jamming.

The speed of production made the STEN not uniformly produced or distributed. Soldiers in WWII would routinely check if their STEN guns worked before bringing them into combat and then merely throwing away the ones that were not effective. However, not working was not its biggest flaw.

A lack of a proper safety and a tendency to fire without warning were also serious issues with the SMG. If the magazine was in and the weapon was dropped, banged against something, or placed down too hard, it had a tendency to empty its magazine.

Regardless of these drawbacks, it was a popular gun with soldiers because of its lightweight and fast rate of fire. The STEN was very popular with resistance groups because it was easily concealable and effective at close range. Many resistance movements were concentrated in cities were the submachine gun reigns supreme. The British also outfitted many resistance groups with weapons and the STEN was a good choice to give them. 

Post-WWII

The STEN gun was phased out by the British in 1951 by the Sterling Submachine Gun. The STEN still saw action in many conflicts across the globe following WWII. The Israeli military was very fond of the STEN Gun during their 1948 War of Independence and Suez Crisis and used it as the inspiration for their famous Uzi submachine gun. Its ease of concealment and lightweight made it popular with American special forces units in Vietnam, who used the suppressed variant.

The ability to conceal it is one of the reasons it was so popular with revolutionists across the globe. Having a concealable weapon with a high rate of fire is ideal for many revolutionist operations. It is still being used today in the Syrian Civil war and across Africa since the 9mm cartridge is still widely produced and popular.  

Conclusion

The STEN gun was an influential gun in the world’s history. It was involved in stopping the Nazis in the Second World War, in several civil wars across the globe, and inspired several stamped steel submachine guns designs. The unique stamped steel design, wire stock, and side-mounted magazine make it very recognizable. The ugly simple design helped to spawn the submachine gun’s legacy in the firearms world.

Having a firm and tight grip on your weapon is paramount. SB Tactical understands this very well, much like many other accessory-producing companies – or anyone who has ever shot a weapon, really.

Your grip could be the factor which makes or breaks your initial aim. Without a proper grasp, there is nothing that will stop those shots from going all over the place and missing the mark. SB Tactical’s goal is to help shooters find greater stability and accuracy, and to that end they have created their extensive line of pistol braces.

SB Tactical are credited with innovating the first pistol stabilizing braces, though other companies have followed in their footsteps and come up with very popular alternatives.

SB Tactical

SB Tactical was founded by Alex Bosco and Grant Shaw in 2013. Bosco, an Army veteran, was interested in helping wounded and/or disabled shooters regain some of the control they had lost. This is how SB Tactical – and its first pistol-stabilizing braces – was born.

Even though it was founded with the intention of helping those who are disabled (or differently abled), these braces have been embraced by many shooters, not the least of which are short-barreled rifle (SBR) enthusiasts.

Bosco was unsure of the legal implications of adding such an accessory to an AR pistol. Therefore, he created the first prototype in his garage, submitted it to the ATF, and gained their approval before going into production.

The ATF wrote Bosco a letter, stating that adding such a device to an AR pistol will not render it a short-barreled rifle. Bosco had a vision, a prototype, and now he had government approval – everything he needed to get into business, with Shaw running the managerial aspect of the company.

The first braces were designed and shipped in the Spring of 2013, after SB had met and signed an agreement with SIG Sauer and later with Century Arms. The deal – first formulated at SHOT Show – was that SIG would sell the AR brace, and Century would sell the AK brace.

Both of those companies had exclusive rights to these first models, titled SB15 and SB47 (in accordance with the receiving weapons’ ubiquitous model numbers). I love it when SHOT Show and similar firearms-related conferences manage to bring small businesses and major manufacturers together to achieve a common goal.

In 2015, the exclusive sales agreements with SIG Sauer and Century Arms came to an end, and SB went full steam ahead designing, manufacturing, and distributing newer braces for use with other brands and models.

These pistol braces provide the shooter with better control over the firearm. This is their primary purpose, and it is achieved by adding another point of contact with the shooter’s body, which in turn leads to improved accuracy. This is why, in my opinion, this item actually deserves the term ‘tactical’.

SB Tactical Braces

SB Tactical’s braces are compatible with most commercially available pistol buffer tubes. However, there is no set industry standard for the tube’s diameter, so the fit may not be optimal at first.

SB are well aware of this, and should the fit be too tight or too loose, this can be mitigated by following the instructions on their website or perhaps by reading the attached manual.

The company states that their braces will fit buffer tubes which are 1.1” to 1.25” in diameter. SB also sells a standalone standard AR buffer tube (1.2” diameter, 8.3” long), made of 7075 T6 aluminum, designed to be an optimal fit for their braces. They are showcasing this item on their website for the MSRP of $39.95.

The brace itself is very straight-forward, and it has few components to it (brace, rod, housing, strap). Other than the actual brace-end of it, the most important part is the buffer tube that comes with it. This is the game-changer, in the eyes of many users.

It means you can use the brace and potentially shoulder your pistol, effectively making it a non-SBR. This means no $200 tax stamp, no waiting period, and no special issues when crossing state lines.

Over time, the ATF has sent several more letters to SB Tactical, to clarify the position of the brace in the eyes of the government. Ironically, these letters managed to confuse the shooting public, because of the very specific wording involved. Things having to do with original designation and potential “redesign” of the accessory, left the shooting public unsure of the legality of such items.

The ATF’s policy regarding pistol braces is still a little vague, but the bottom line is that a pistol stabilizing brace may be purchased, owned, and installed on a pistol, and that the addition of such an accessory to the pistol does not take away from its ‘pistol’ status or classification.

Concurrently, a pistol with a brace remains a pistol, period. As long as you don’t alter the original design of the pistol brace, the ATF cannot place anything unlawful at your feet.

Still, there is a question here.

That question comes up time and again on various gun forums and almost anytime the topic of pistol braces comes up. And that question is this: why bother? Why buy a brace instead of simply purchasing a tax stamp and making your pistol a proper SBR (where permitted)?

Well, for some people it is not a mere question of money, but more a question of hassle. Is it worth it? Is the (sometimes lengthy) process worth the time? The bureaucratic headache? The extra cash?

The answer to this question changes from one person to the next, and it all depends on your circumstances.

Having a tax stamp could save you future hassles, but getting a brace will save you from present hassles. Your call, but DO do the research before buying one or the other. Not all states are governed equally, as we all know, so check your local laws regarding either one of these methods, as well as the legal implications which may come into play.

SB sells braces for the AR and AK platforms, and also for certain models of HK, CZ, Ruger, Remington, Mossberg, and even the IWI Galil. The prices vary, but the MSRP for these models runs anywhere from $79.99 to $329.99, depending on the one in question.

This adds yet another factor into the “SBR VS brace” conundrum, since some of these braces cost more than a SBR tax stamp itself!

SB Tactical SBA3

In April of 2018, SB Tactical began shipping its newest model – the SBA3. This is an AR pistol stabilizing brace, and it is designed for any platform which accepts mil-spec carbine receiver extensions.

The item’s weight is 6.75 oz, and its length is 6.1”. It is adjustable (5 positions), includes a QD point for sling, and comes in black or FDE. MSRP $169.99

This thing takes almost no time to install, is built from sturdy material, and as mentioned earlier it has the potential to provide the user with the advantage of increased stability and accuracy.

The question of price is always something to consider, but if you are not interested in going the SBR route – or even if you are – the SBA3 is a fine alternative, be it permanent or temporary.

At SHOT Show 2019, SB Tactical unveiled their newest prototype, the SBA4. This model retains some of the previous model’s attributes, and attempts to make them better.

There is the mil-spec buffer tube, increased adjustability, higher cheek-rise, wider back-end, and the bottom has been reinforced so there is less rotation and/or movement. The QD point has been moved from the back a bit more to the front, because apparently this was something the company was hearing a lot about from consumers.

These new braces are slated to be shipped to dealers in the Spring of 2019, so be on the lookout for those.

Conclusion

The SB pistol braces were intended for shooters who were having difficulties, but it seems they have outgrown that initial designation, and have since become a viable option for those who are interested in increasing stability, regardless of any physical difficulties or challenges they may be facing.

Is it a necessity? For some, probably.

For others, it could go either way.

The ability to side-step the SBR tax stamp issue and kind of “stick it” to the ATF (so to speak) in the process – I suppose this is precisely what makes this sort of item such a hit.

It is an altogether highly practical accessory, regardless of legal status, and I have no doubt that SB Tactical will have many more surprises up their sleeve in the months and years to come.

The Shpagin machine pistol, commonly known as the PPSH 41, is one of the most iconic European rifles from World War II that was a staple in the Soviet Armed Forces for several decades. While the legendary submachine gun is still used among mercenaries and non-governmental militant groups around the world, its last hurrah was in the 1970’s when it was used extensively by the Viet Cong. Unlike the AK-47, the Shpagin was not completely equipped to handle the harsh conditions of 20th-century warfare. Nevertheless, I think it’s important that we acknowledge this gun, mostly because of its tremendous historical significance.

PPSH 41

At first glance, the PPSH looks a lot like the classic Tommy Gun, with the main difference being the Soviet variant doesn’t have the wooden pistol grip. Otherwise, both submachine guns stand out with their distinct combination of steel and wood components and utilization of a drum magazine. Keep in mind that manufacturing weapons was a big deal in the USSR, especially with minimal capital and serious demand. As a result, the engineering team behind the historical firearm went with, what was to them, a revolutionary production process. Since it required a tremendous amount of simple steel parts, the Soviets began using metal stamping, which saved them tons. This innovative mass production style is what ultimately enabled them to handle the intensified wartime demand. In fact, the Soviets produced approximately 1 million units per year during WWII and nearly 6 million when all was said and done. In addition to supplying their own troops, the Soviets even dispersed thousands of units behind enemy lines to outfit Soviet partisan resistance fighters.

Impressively, the Soviets were constantly modifying the PPSH’s design to accommodate their soldiers. For instance, they were eventually supplied with 1mm steel drum mags since the initial 0.5mm steel drums were notoriously unreliable. However, the Soviets first switched from the drum mags to curved box mags, since they were more reliable and easier to carry. Similarly, once the engineers realized their gun was too hard to control they decided to change up the design instead of adopting a smaller caliber. Accordingly, they crafted an extended barrel shroud that essentially functioned as a muzzle brake and actually worked wonders for improving shot grouping and overall accuracy.

The Soviets clearly intended the PPSH to be the AK-47 of close quarters combat, which is evident in its exceptional low-maintenance and durability. Surprisingly, they incorporated a chrome-lined bore, which is probably how they’ve been able to function for so long. Nevertheless, nearly everyone complained about the awkwardness of carrying and firing the submachine gun, especially when loaded with those cumbersome drum mags.

PPSH 43

While the 41 gets all the attention, we can’t ignore the remarkable PPS 43. The Red Army put in a request to make the 41 more compact and the PPS 43 was the fantastic outcome. Nonetheless, you’d have troubling figuring that out since these two submachine guns look so different from each other. Yet, it’s these major changes that made the PPS 43 such an extraordinary firearm. For starters, the Soviets made the PPS 43 extremely simple and reliable, so much so that there were several multi-functioning components.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, few firearms can boast as much historical significance as the PPSH 41, especially foreign ones. Likewise, while it may not be anything spectacular today, we can’t ignore the importance and innovation that it offered when it was first manufactured. I may be a stickler, but I still rather have a Tommy over one of these Soviet guns any day.

CZ is one of those unusual gunmakers who are so incredibly popular yet still manage to fly under the radar. The Czech company is by no means a household name, in spite of the fact that they manufacture one of the most widely-circulated handguns in the world, the CZ-75. In fact, the European weapons producer has been pumping out popular guns for nearly 100 years. Furthermore, the impressive CZ team was surprisingly able to succeed even under the harsh Soviet rule. Nevertheless, once the Iron Curtain fell, along with the expiration of the Warsaw Pact, CZ was able to flourish and export their products to a wider fanbase.

In truth, it wasn’t really until they opened an American offshoot that they really became a world-renowned arms producer. After decades of perfecting their handguns, CZ went to work on revolutionizing the submachine gun back in 2009. It was then that they unleashed the Scorpion Evo 3 and took the industry by storm. 

Although the modern CZ Scorpion is still relatively new, its roots go all the way back to the early 1960’s. It was at this time that the Czechs manufactured the Scorpion vz. 61, a 7.65mm machine pistol designed for the Czech army and special forces. While they may share a similar distinction, these two CZ weapons are mostly unrelated.

CZ Scorpion Build & Construction

2018 is looking to be a huge year for CZ, especially once they announced five new additions to the Scorpion EVO line. To make things even better, CZ-USA diversified the Scorpion collection like you wouldn’t believe. Besides for pistols and submachine guns, the prospering gunmaker has also created a few truly remarkable Scorpion EVO Carbines. While these new models stay true to the basic Scorpion format, CZ is offering new and improved features such as flash cans, updated finishes, and folding braces.

What I really loved about the new Scorpion’s build was how innovative it was. For example, CZ outfitted these bad boys with polymer upper and lower receivers but decided to stick with all steel parts. Even more impressive is how ergonomic these carbines and submachine guns are.

Furthermore, some of the new models feature SilencerCo faux suppressors or KAK flash can muzzle devices. These new and inventive components effectively boost control, redirect the gun’s gasses and noise forward, upgrade aesthetics, and improve overall reliability.

One of the more interesting components on the Scorpion Carbine was the folding stock. It was sturdy, easy to use, but definitely more basic when compared to its competitors. Nevertheless, it works just fine and does feature a comfortable rubber buttpad and adjustable length of pull. Similarly, the carbine has a pretty interesting handle configuration.

The large and flared grip is kind of ugly but does give pretty good grip support. Unfortunately, because of its large grip surface and ambidextrous controls, the safety toggle can cause some discomfort. The next thing you’ll notice is the European-style mag release. Although I’ve never been a fan of these, this one is actually tolerable thanks to its ability to be pressed by the trigger finger.

Because CZ wanted Scorpion Carbine owners to be able to accessorize, they integrated M-LOK attachment points at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions on its fiber-reinforced polymer frame. Plus, they also added a full-length Picatinny rail on top attached to the receiver.

Between these two setups, there are countless accessory configurations you can choose to attach lasers, lights, and what have you. To make it even sweeter, CZ added integrated ambidextrous sling mounts, saving you precious space on the handguard.

Although the carbine Scorpion offers all of these upgrades, they were outfitted with one of the best default sight systems I’ve ever seen. CZ-USA attached fully-adjustable aluminum sights on both sides that are sure to impress. In addition to being windage-adjustable, the rear sight has four aperture sight options to give the shooter incredible versatility. Moving up front, this elevation-adjustable sight features glare-reducing serrations.

Like the carbine, the CZ-USA semi-automatic pistol is insanely versatile and just flat out amazing. In fact, these models are incredible CQB firearms comparable to legendary weapons like the Uzi, FN P90, KRISS Vector, and the ST Kinetics CPW. To make these groundbreaking PDWs, CZ incorporated 7.75” barrels, ambidextrous controls, swappable non-reciprocating charging handles, four Picatinny rails, and even adjustable trigger reaches.

CZ Scorpion Mags

The best part about the Scorpions’ mags is their high-capacities, including 10, 20, and 30 round options. While these Double stack polymer mags may not be the most durable, they are super affordable and surprisingly reliable. Additionally, because the magazine wells are flared, it’s fast and easy to load and reload the Scorpion.

CZ Scorpion Performance & Operation

The CZ-USA Scorpion blowback-operated semi-autos are a true pleasure to shoot. No matter how you decide to use your Scorpion, you know that you can trust it no matter what. These highly-rated carbines and pistols are incredibly user-friendly and easy to use, especially considering their manageable 9mm cartridge. As much as I enjoyed the submachine gun models, it’s hard to beat a carbine.

I love the extra velocity offered by these guns, not to mention the significantly reduced recoil and muzzle rise. I was also really impressed by how easy follow-up shots were, even on the pistols variants. While there are so many factors to consider in a new gun, it’s crucial to never overlook the trigger. That being said, I was more than happy with the CZ Scorpion triggers. Although it took me some time to get accustomed to them, I can’t complain about a 7.5 lb. average trigger pull.

Accessories for the CZ Scorpion

I have to say that these firearms are more than effective without adding any attachments and accessories. Nevertheless, CZ left the door open for all kinds of tactical upgrades and aftermarket options. If you’re looking to add an optic to your Scorpion, you can’t go wrong with an Aimpoint, EOTech, or Trijicon. Furthermore, because the Scorpion is such a tactical masterpiece, many users tend to attach lights and lasers.

I’m a huge fan of combination accessories so it’s no surprise that I highly recommend the Crimson Trace CMR-206 Rail Master Universal – This is one of the top-rated affordable pistol accessories on the market ($120) that can give you a major tactical advantage. Lastly, although CZ currently markets Scorpion models with great muzzle devices and faux suppressors, nothing beats a real-deal firearm suppressor. While you may not think that a 9mm pistol caliber gun needs a suppressor, try a SilencerCo Osprey and I guarantee you won’t regret it.

No matter how you cut it, the HK MP5 is one of the most recognizable guns on the planet. In addition to their near-ubiquitous presence in films, tv, and video games, these delayed blowback firearms are also common among military and law enforcement in almost 100 countries.

Like the Israeli Uzi, the German MP5 was designed to be a lightweight and versatile PDW (personal defense weapon), and it has been a huge hit since its debut in the 60’s. Nevertheless, the iconic submachine gun has seen dozens of updates and variants including semi-auto only, suppressor-friendly, and larger caliber options.

Unfortunately, nothing can last forever and the MP5 has finally begun to be phased out and replaced with the UMP. In living up to their world-renowned reputation, Heckler and Koch developed the MP5’s durable successor to be even lighter and more affordable.

I think we can all agree that a weapon doesn’t become the most circulated gun in its class by accident – The MP5 is no ordinary firearm and it has the specs and decades of worldwide experience to prove it.

That’s why in today’s Gunivore Exclusive, we are going to be taking a closer look at the historic weapon to get a better picture of how this unconventional firearm became a universal classic.

MP5 Specs

MP5 Historic Build

In developing the MP5, Heckler and Koch utilized one of the most successful assault rifles of the time – their extremely popular G3, as the base. After scaling down the high-powered battle rifle into a submachine gun platform, the Germans added some much-needed upgrades like cold hammer forged, free-floating barrels and more modern polymers.

While nothing about the MP5 stands out as being exceptionally ergonomic, it’s small and convenient size is a huge plus for its overall handling. Additionally, its highly-modular design offers easy tactical adjustments on the fly. Although I was never a huge fan of the small cocking handle on HK’s SMG, the rest of the controls feel extremely natural and are remarkably user-friendly.

Take the selective-fire switch for example, which enables the shooter to intuitively toggle between safe, semi-auto, full-auto, and burst modes. Considering this tactical advantage plus its collapsible stock and easily-concealed build it’s no wonder why the MP5 was so popular.

Legendary Performance of the MP5

The decades of the MP5’s continued use is the ultimate evidence of its incredible performance quality. Part of what made the SMG so successful was Heckler and Koch’s risky move to stick with their traditional delayed blowback action.

Although it’s the subject of much debate, H&K seemingly figured out how to mitigate all of the notorious issues with the blowback action. In general, delayed blowback firearms are known to be more ammo sensitive and run cleaner than the more common gas impingement. Nevertheless, the MP5 is remarkably easy to control and stays surprisingly clean thanks to its air-cooled construction.

HK MP5 Mags & Accessories

When it comes to aftermarket options, Heckler and Koch hooked it up big time for the MP5. In terms of magazines, the German arms developer offers your choice of 15, 30, or 40 round detachable box mags and some models are even capable of chambering a 100-round Beta C-Mag drum mag. Furthermore, H&K also markets magazine loading and unloading devices and magazine clamps.

Considering the MP5’s tactical excellence, many users opt to add attachments to the assault rifle including lasers, optics, and flashlights. One of the most common accessories is for this iconic firearm is a foregrip, and there are tons of fantastic options to choose from, like the T-FS 7 Position Side Folding Foregrip and their AG-44S Quick Release Ergonomic Foregrip. Additionally, it’s not uncommon to see MP5s with upgraded tactical folding stocks, bipods, and additional rails.

If you’re looking for more traditional attachments then there are some pretty incredible options to consider. Starting with a tactical flashlight, it’s hard to beat the Streamlight TLR-1 HL, but if you’re looking for an upgrade then check out their TLR-2s which also includes a sweet red laser sight.

The next accessory to consider is a tactical optic, one that is as versatile as the MP5 and you can’t get much better than Bushnell. In fact, I love their Trophy TRS-25 Red Dot 1 x 25mm on the MP5, especially considering how affordable it is ($79). On the other hand, it’s also worth looking into the extremely affordable CVLIFE 1 x 22 x 33 Red/Green Dot Reflex Sight ($17).

German MP5 Vs. Israeli Uzi

In the world of SMGs, there are only a few guns who can even compare to the HK MP5, but the Uzi is definitely one of them. Whether or not someone is familiar with firearms they will most certainly recognize the iconic Israeli weapon, thanks to its ubiquitous presence in pop culture. Furthermore, the Uzi has also been utilized by law enforcement and militaries in over 75 countries across the globe ever since its debut.

The most obvious distinction between these two legendary guns is their size – The Uzi is significantly lighter, smaller, and ultimately more concealable, giving it the tactical edge over the MP5. Secondly, besides for offering a significantly faster rate of fire, the Israeli SMG also boasts a much more impressive effective firing range. In fact, the only real advantage of the MP5 is its user-friendly controls and handling. In the end, I think I’ll stick with my Uzi.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, few firearms have impacted the world as much as Heckler & Koch’s MP5. One of the biggest tactical changes that happened after WWII was the switch to close quarters combat and the MP5 quickly became the market favorite. As a result, militaries and law enforcement alike jumped to the famous German weapon manufacturer to produce more and more of these impressive SMGs.

Pistol-caliber carbines are emerging as some of the most beloved firearms on the market and it’s easy to see why. In addition to their lighter weight and increased mobility (compared to regular rifles), these modified weapons offer the best of both handguns and long guns. For instance, while chambering standard pistol ammunition, the unique construction of these carbines allows for higher velocity shooting and significantly lower recoil. As a result, pistol-caliber carbines provide an ergonomic and reliable shooting experience that is ideal for all your firearm purposes. Case in point, many shooters utilize pistol-caliber carbines for home-defense because they are noticeably quieter than most rifles and pistols and can handle all kinds of accessories. Additionally, it should not be overlooked that the price of handgun ammo is considerably cheaper, which gives these guns an obvious advantage.

In this edition of Gunivore Fast Five, we’re going to break down our picks for the top pistol-caliber carbines under $1,000. We understand that there are plenty of great options out there, but felt it was important to take price into consideration. Keep in mind that there are several great carbines and SBR’s, like the Springfield Saint AR-15 Pistol and Sig Sauer MCX that we left off this list because of their rifle caliber chamberings.

KRISS Vector

We at Gunivore love the KRISS Vector series because of its insane versatility and sheer pleasure value. The Vector Gen II CRB is offered in 9mm, 9x21mm, .45 ACP, 10mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG, so you have plenty of options to choose from. Similarly, KRISS’ unique construction provides for a wide variety of capacities ranging from 10+1 to 17+1. While most people focus on the Vector’s unusual design, many people forget the CRB’s incredible control. This extraordinary handling is due to the award-winning and innovative Super V Recoil Mitigation System, which led to the Vector being named the “best close quarters combat weapon” by the Military Channel’s Ultimate Weapons program. To put it into perspective, the KRISS Vector provides shooters with 60% less felt recoil and nearly 95% reduced muzzle climb.

To make their flagship firearm even more impressive, KRISS enabled the CRB to be field stripped in seconds and even threw in caliber interchangeability. While it may take a few mags to get used to the unique design of the Vector, most users find its controls to be surprisingly intuitive and easy to adapt to. Last but not least, we can’t praise KRISS enough for building the Vector pistol-caliber carbine to feed from detachable Glock magazines. Even if Vector owners don’t already own a Glock, the sheer popularity and availability of these magazines is a clear advantage.

Beretta CX4 Storm

Like the KRISS Vector, the Beretta CX4 Storm does not look like your run-of-the-mill firearm. Nonetheless, these highly-rated pistol-caliber carbines are definitely worthy of the trusted Beretta name. While many users complain about their lower than average capacity, they can’t deny how user-friendly the CX4 is. Similarly, the tactical masterpiece is lauded for its supreme lightweight and compact design and intuitive controls. I can’t quite explain why, but my first reaction to seeing the CX4 Storm was that it looked kind of cheap. After getting to know the carbine better, I realized how far off I was from the truth. In addition to a cold-hammer forged & chrome-lined barrel, the Beretta carbine was outfitted with a surprisingly durable black synthetic polymer frame. Nevertheless, the CX4 is really only a top-notch firearm when it is accessorized to the max. Keep in mind that with its semi-affordable price-tag, users will most likely want to invest in some solid attachments like vertical foregrips and mounted optics.

CZ Skorpion EVO 3

CZ may be famous for their pistols, but the Czech-American company is slowly building one hell of a reputation for their pistol-caliber carbine series. The CZ Skorpion Evo 3 has a seriously intimidating build and a performance to back it up too. The innovative Skorpion features several highly-praised components which have made it a favorite among shooters across the globe. For instance, CZ opted for a completely polymer exterior to keep weight low but went with steel internal components for added durability and dependability. Nonetheless, some shooters may not love the Skorpion’s folding stock, but I don’t think it’s a deal breaker for most people. What really makes the CZ pistol-caliber carbine stick out is its uniquely amazing default sights. Although the Skorpion was outfitted with M-Lok attachment points at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions, the fully-adjustable aluminum sights on these guys are simply remarkable. Besides for their windage-adjustability, CZ owners love the glare-reducing serrations on the elevation-adjustable front sights. Furthermore, the Skorpion features four aperture sight options on the rear to give shooters plenty of versatility in the field or on the range.

Kel-Tec Sub-2000

We’ve already seen some of the most unusually designed firearms on this list, so why not take a look at the Kel-Tec Sub-2000. This pistol-caliber Carbine is ridiculously nonconforming yet unbelievably popular. People tend to stumble across these guns due to their low cost and unique appearance, but they tend to keep them due to their reliable performance and wonderful ease-of-use. Because the Kel-Tec features so many unusual characteristics, it’s hard to determine which of them users prefer the most. Many shooters opt for the Sub-2000 because it can accept magazines from a variety of popular brands, including Sig, Beretta, Glock, & Smith and Wesson. Similarly, besides for its multiple caliber options, the Kel-Tec has developed a huge fan base thanks to its modular ability to fold into a 16.3” build. When you combine these features with the fact that it has a 3-position adjustable stock, dual-sided accessory rail, and ambidextrous controls, it’s no wonder why the Sub-2000 is one of the best-selling rifles in the world.

Best Pistol-Caliber Carbine Just Over $1,000: IWI X-95

The IWI Tavor X95 is definitely not your standard rifle. These futuristic pistol-caliber carbines are built on the unusual bullpup model which may take some getting used to. Nevertheless, these guns are insanely reliable, user-friendly- and surprisingly ergonomic. I have been fortunate enough to make many friends within the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) and they have all told me that the Tavor is the go-to firearm for most Israeli infantry soldiers. In fact, many of them have told me that once you try bullpup, it’s hard to go back. Because of their 32-round high-capacity, shortened barrel, and multiple accessory rails, these carbines are the ultimate CQB or home-defense weapons.

Best Budget Carbine: Hi-Point 995TS

Okay I know Hi-Points are arguably the most hated guns on the market, but they are a niche firearm that knows its place and doesn’t claim to be anything more. After hearing all of the hate about Hi-Point pistols and carbines, I went out and gave them a shot, to see if they were as shoddy as everyone makes them out to be. I can assure you that they are surprisingly solid guns. Yes, they are definitely ugly and I wouldn’t pay very much for them, but as budget guns, they are worth every penny. The 995TS is simple, offered in several pistol calibers, and is even offered in a variety of finishes. Additionally, although these carbines look chunky, they are surprisingly lightweight and decently comfortable to shoot. And while there are plenty of attachment options to add to the multiple accessory rails, the 995TS is way more accurate than people give it credit for. That being said, it’s a great choice for a starter gun and could even do well as a home-defense weapon or truck gun.

Kriss Vector Build & Construction

KRISS USA proudly states that “Power is pointless without control”, and it was with that truth in mind that they produced the Vector Series. In fact, these highly-versatile tactical firearms are basically in a league of their own where very few other weapons can compare. Much of their success and overall praise is a result of their exceptional and distinctive design. In point of fact, the KRISS Super V was voted as the best “close quarters combat weapon” by The Military Channel’s Ultimate Weapons program.

Although the three Vector weapons were all built on the same platform, there are a few key distinctions between them, which we’ll highlight here. First, let’s get to know the Vector Series as a whole. When I say that the Vector is unorthodox, I really mean it! These KRISS modern marvels are all constructed around the innovative Super V Recoil Mitigation System, which gives these guns insane handling. Simply, this unique style of gunsmithing technology redirects the recoil energy downwards instead of back into the shooter. Similarly, by utilizing an incredibly low bore axis, the residual perceived recoil is essentially dispersed instead of directly hitting the shooter in a concentrated area. Statistically speaking, the Super V Recoil Mitigation System is reported to lower felt recoil upwards of 60% and muzzle climb up to 95%!

One of the most popular features on these tactical weapons is their ease of use, especially in terms of its simple takedown and caliber interchangeability. By connecting the receivers with straightforward pins, the KRISS Vector can be fieldstripped in seconds. Additionally, by simply switching the lower, users can quickly change between a wide-variety of calibers including 9mm, .357 SIG, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP.

When designing the Vector Series, KRISS USA looked to the iconic AK-47 to keep it easy to fieldstrip and clean, highly reliable, and supremely durable. For example, to keep their premier firearm as user-friendly as possible, they opted for a non-reciprocated charging handle that is surprisingly intuitive. Nonetheless, it may take a few mags to get the hang of it. Likewise, the American arms company incorporated a bilateral thumb safety with a short throw, conveniently positioned just above and to the rear of the trigger.

Another feature that the entire series share is their game-changing Picatinny rails. In addition to their full-length top MIL-STD 1913 accessory rails, these tactical beauties also boast a super-convenient lower rail. As a side note, to give their firearms a boost in durability and a touch of modern aesthetics, KRISS utilized high-grade polymers and Cerakote finishes. Even better, the American gunmaker offers them in a variety of colors including flat dark earth and Alpine White.

Now, focusing on their minute differences, the Special Duty Pistol Vector is the clear standout. Besides for its overall size difference, these KRISS guns were built with QD Sling Swivel end pieces as opposed to the tactical stocks on the other models. While the Short Barrel Rifle Vectors were outfitted with sweet telescopic folding stocks, the Carbine KRISS comes in your choice of fixed or M4-style stocks. Likewise, the CRB was also built to be multi-state compliant, so be sure to check your local laws before buying this Vector. On the other side, both the SBR and SDP were designed with threaded muzzles for easy suppressor attachment.   

All things considered, these tactical masterpieces look like weapons straight out of a sci-fi flick. But at the end of the day, performance is really what matters, so let’s find out how well the Vectors do in practice.

KRISS Vector Magazines

One of the unique aspects of the KRISS Vectors is that they feed from Glock detachable box magazines. Considering the Vectors were designed to chamber mags from one of the most reliable and popular brands on the market, they work seamlessly in concert with Glocks by their sides. Consequently, it makes sense why more and more global militaries and law enforcement have decided to equip themselves with KRISS firearms. In fact, they offer selective-fire variants of the SBR and CRB for these markets, with semi-auto, full-auto, and two-shot firing abilities.

KRISS Vector Performance & Shooting

If you couldn’t tell already, the KRISS Vector Series offers one of the most pleasurable and user-friendly shooting experiences in the industry. While much of this is due to their revolutionary Super V Recoil Mitigation System, KRISS added several other performance-enhancing features throughout these guns. For example, if you take a look at the fore-end of the Vectors, you’ll see highly-texturized grip surfaces that tremendously boost control.

Whether shooting semi-auto, two-shot, or full-auto, the KRISS Vectors are insanely easy to control. This means that when firing one of these tactical weapons you can expect peak performance and ridiculous accuracy. For the best results, the KRISS is most effective between 80 and 150ft. Let me make that clear, that even in full-auto, you can expect incredible control and accuracy. While some original full-auto models have been said to fire up to 1,500 rounds a minute, most current versions of the submachine gun can’t hit above 1,100.

KRISS Vector Accessories

Although the KRISS Vectors come pre-equipped with flip-up Magpul MBUS sights, most users tend to make better use out of the Picatinny rails. That being the case, it’d be wise to invest in some solid optics. On the other hand, the Vector would be incomplete without a foregrip, at least the CRB model. Nevertheless, as tactical superstars, many folks want a laser or flashlight too, so how can someone possibly configure the Vector the most effectively?

Because adding an optic is so vital, I think most people would agree with me that it’s best to utilize the top rail with a solid optic. That being the case, I really like the Trijicon RMRs and the Bushnell Trophy TRS-25 Red-Dot Sight. I know there are so many other great choices out there, but you just gotta go with what feels right.

When hooking up accessories to the bottom rail of a Vector, we run into the age-old problem of picking between a foregrip, laser, or flashlight. While there are plenty of combo sights out there now, it can be tough finding the right one. One of the ultimate accessories on the market is the Crimson Trace MVF-515 Modular Vertical Foregrip™ with a green laser and tactical flashlight holder. On the other hand, if you want to keep your toys separate, you can’t go wrong with a Surefire flashlight, and I’ve always loved my X300U-A model. If you’re more of a laser person, then I’d opt for the Crimson Trace Rail Master Universal Fit Laser Sight.

Nevertheless, even with all of these great options, I just love the Vector with a vertical grip and there are so many unreal options to choose from. Between a Daniel Defense, Bravo Company, and Magpul, you can give your weapon a huge control boost at an affordable price.

Comparable Firearms

The KRISS Vector Series is practically impossible to compare to any other firearm on the market, especially considering that they have become the prototype for futuristic guns. In fact, I’ve seen several films and video games – like the remakes of Robocop and Total Recall – employ the Vector as the gun used in the future.

Nevertheless, the only guns which come to mind when thinking about the Vector are the Israeli Uzi and the revolutionary Kel-Tec PLR-16 and Sub 2000. I think of the Uzi because, like the Vector, the Uzi is a highly-concealable, ultra-reliable, and super-accurate submachine gun that is as unique as it is versatile. On the other hand, the Kel-Tecs, like the Vector, are revolutionary firearms that transformed the market due to their innovative designs and operation.

In 2013, SIG Sauer set out to design and manufacture one of their most ambitious creations – a gas-operated submachine gun, chambered in 9X19mm. A new generation of MP5-style guns, if you will. SIG’s team was successful in their endeavor, and after many tests and trials, the SIG MPX was finally introduced in 2015.

Here are some of its specs. For this review, we will be discussing the MPX in its pistol form (MPX-P). This firearm has several variants, and we will mention some of them later on.

SIG Sauer MPX Design

This thing is built a lot like an AR, and that is no accident. The AR-platform is one of the most recognizable and widely-used designs in modern firearm history. The bolt catch, safety button, and magazine release are all styled in AR fashion, and to make it even better, SIG has made this platform completely ambidextrous. I say “better”, though to be fair there are those who are not too fond of ambi-controls. This thing has a fully closed and locked rotating bolt mechanism, which means it can a lot of punishment and stay operational, without malfunctioning for even a split-second.

The MPX has a full-length Picatinny rail on top, and it comes with flip-up iron sights. There is also a KeyMod rail on the forend. The rear of the gun also has a small Picatinny rail, allowing you to mount the stock or brace of your choice on the back. Some attachments require paperwork, so make sure to comply with your local laws and regulations. The MPX’s grip is made of polymer.

The place where the MPX varies greatly from the AR-platform is its operating system. Instead of an AR-like direct impingement system or MP5-esque blowback system, the MPX utilizes a short-stroke piston system, and this is part of what helps the gun be much safer, much cleaner, and much more reliable than similar submachine guns.

SIG Sauer MPX Performance

The MPX looks great and also shoots great. The 30-round magazine is plenty, and it is an accurate and precise weapon right out of the box. The MPX is meant to be a close-encounter personal defense weapon, and it does its job in the best possible way.

The one thing I saw as a shortcoming – one which many will agree with me on – is the factory trigger. It is not the best, to say the least. I am not such a picky trigger squeezer, normally. That means that if I noticed its choppiness, you can bet your bottom dollar that there are many out there who replaced that trigger as soon as they cut the tape on the box.

As for the actual shooting experience – I have no complaints. It shoots like a SIG should. It took the boys at SIG a long while to release the MPX. There were problems and setbacks, but they got through them and released the MPX-P sometime after the standard one came out.

MPX Mags

The MPX magazine (manufactured exclusively for SIG by Lancer) is currently designated only for the MPX. There are Gen I mags and Gen II mags, corresponding with Gen I and II of the MPX itself. These magazines are expensive, and right now they are only available through SIG. The magazines are polymer, and they come in 10-, 20- and 30-round options.

There are some conflicting stories regarding compatibility or lack of it, but Gen II magazines should work on Gen I MPX guns. They did for me, anyway, when I was at the range. If your experience was different, or if you want to be sure of what you should do, simply get in touch with SIG. Better safe than sorry. Their reps know more than I do, that’s for sure.

Safety and Sights

The safety, as previously mentioned, is like a standard AR fire selector. It is ambidextrous and proves to be a bit too big for some shooters. It really does depend on the size of your hands, and on what you are used to shooting.

Firing a big gun, one that is actually meant to be a submachine gun can be a little awkward at first – especially with no stock to speak of. At any rate, the safety works fine, and its inner mechanism makes it one of the safest SMGs out there.

The sights on the MPX are factory iron flip-ups, but the Picatinny rail means that those will probably serve as backup sights (highly recommended) and that a more reliable optic will be mounted onto the weapon. Take your pick of red dot, laser, flashlight, and get to it.

I mean, sure, you could stick with the flip-ups, but that Picatinny rail is there for a reason, so you may as well use it. Mounting a red dot or other optic is the best way to take advantage of this firearm, and it allows you to remain armed and ready in the day or night, and increase the gun’s range and accuracy.

Accessories

Accessories vary from one version to the next. The different models allow the user to change the stock configuration, barrel length, and calibers, and also make use of braces, suppressors, muzzle brakes, flash hiders, and other attachments.

Part of what makes this such a great gun is that these adjustments and alterations can be done in the field, on the fly. This is a highly adaptable weapon, and it has the ability to change according to mission specifications.

SIG Sauer MPX For Civilian Use

The original MPX came fully automatic, so when the question of civilian use came into the picture, the semi-automatic versions were obviously the way to go. Civilians have their choice of the SIG MPX Carbine, Carbine FDE (flat dark earth), Pistol, PSB (pistol stabilizing brace), PSB FDE, and SBR (short-barreled rifle) models.

SIG Sauer MPX SBR Variant

The SBR variant is another popular choice. Gun laws in the U.S. are weird sometimes, no doubt about it. In most cases, possession of an SBR requires a special ATF tax stamp. Without it, you could get in trouble with federal authorities.

The MPX SBR comes in a 4.5-inch barrel or 8-inch barrel configuration. The gun comes with a single 30-round polymer magazine, folding sights, collapsible stock, polymer grip, MIL-SPEC trigger, carbon steel barrel, and hard coat anodized receiver.

MPX Copperhead

SIG unveiled the newest addition to their popular MPX lineup at the 2019 SHOT Show: the Copperhead model. Like others of the MPX line, it’s somewhat unorthodox in design and appearance, and it certainly deserves a mention.

Some history: In 2018, the US Army requested manufacturers to submit a subcompact weapon prototype – one which was 9mm, Picatinny rail-topped, selective fire, and sound-suppressed. SIG submitted the MPX, and this is the civilian version of that weapon.

Some specs:

• Caliber: 9mm
• Length: 14.5″
• Barrel length: 3.5″
• Weight: 4.5 lbs
• Capcity: 10, 20, or 30 rounds (MPX mag)
• MSRP: $1,835

It is gas-piston operated, with controls which highly resemble an AR-style weapon, and a darn-tan copper-ish color. It features a different pistol grip than previous versions, dual recoil springs with metal retainer, a dual-position telescopic brace, one-piece upper receiver, along with an integrated muzzle brake and flash hider.

To quote a gun-forum visitor: “It’s big, heavy, and ugly. I’ll take two.”

MPX Availability

The MSRP of the various MPX models ranges from $1852 – $2152. These are the starting prices, as listed on SIG’s website. As always, the actual street price will probably be lower.

This is a gun which will not fit everyone’s budget. Some may even go so far as to call this a luxury gun. It could be, sure. But that is true to all SIG firearms, to some extent. They cost more, and they always have. No getting around that.

This is a piece of hardware that is meant to save the lives of you and your loved ones. If the price is too high, there are always more affordable options. Alternatively, you could wait for a significant sale to cross your path. Those happen a lot, so keep your eyes and ears open.

MPX variants are available online and offline, in gun shops and firearms shows or conventions. SIG also work with specifically authorized dealers, so if you want to find the closest one to you, use their website’s resources! You will undoubtedly be able to find a good deal on one, somewhere.

Conclusion

The SIG MPX submachine gun, whether in fully-automatic or semi-automatic configuration, is a gun which has been many years in the making. It is not the very first submachine gun to utilize a gas system, but it is definitely the first one to pull it off so beautifully and flawlessly. And in 9X19mm Parabellum, too!

Overall, it is a great weapon. I am glad I had the chance to try it out in its pistol configuration, but let’s be honest – it is the full auto ‘beast’ configuration that seems to be the most appealing, at least range-wise. Shooting anything in full auto mode is a lot of fun, but it eats up ammo like there’s no tomorrow.

As far as I am concerned, the only true purpose of an individual with a fully automatic weapon is providing proper cover fire. Remember, this is a pistol. A big one, yes, but a pistol nonetheless. And like a pistol, it is meant for relatively short ranges. It is not a battle rifle or machine gun, it is a gun.

So, if you want it – and can afford it – go for it! The MPX is guaranteed to be one hell of an addition to your arsenal. And if you have any extra cash, send one my way, too!

Submachine guns, or SMG’s, are essentially machine guns which use handgun ammunition rather than rifle ammunition. While it’s often said that the submachine gun is a more compact version of the machine gun, this isn’t necessarily the case – it would be more accurate to say that the submachine gun is actually a larger, more powerful version of the handgun. Submachine guns are not generally the most popular kind of firearm amongst civilians, but the FN P90 (also known as the FN Project 1990) is simply too special a gun to not warrant near-universal demand.

The P90 and its bullpup design look nothing like conventional submachine guns, or guns of any kind for that matter – it has a futuristic look that screams ‘cool’ and exciting features that we’ve come to expect from FN, a world-class firearms manufacturer. However, the P90, being an automatic submachine gun, is not available for civilian use, outside of in the Call of Duty series (note: I personally do not favor the P90 when playing COD due to the annoying and unrealistically lengthy re-load animations featured when using the gun). This left the regular gun-owning folk of the world on the outside looking in on the P90 party – that is, until the PS90 came along in 2005. A semi-automatic submachine gun, the PS90 mirrors the P90 in most ways (including its unique look) but is nerfed for the sake of legality and for commercial sale. This makes it an excellent choice for both personal defense and sporting uses for gun owners, and it comes as no surprise that the model has been popular ever since it was first released. FN P90 and PS90 History and Development

Before we get into FN Herstal’s foray in the submachine gun category, let’s take a step back and examine the broader history of the SMG. Originally the product of a demand for more powerful, lightweight guns, the submachine gun has seen decreased use, development, and demand in recent years. This is due to the rise of the assault rifle, which accomplishes the same job as the submachine gun but with greater stopping power and range. The golden age of the submachine gun, the World War 2 era, saw millions of SMG’s in use, but demand for the gun gradually declined as development continued across the entire spectrum of other gun categories, while the SMG remained limited by definition (SMG’s use handgun ammunition, there’s just no getting around that). The submachine gun niche still does exist, thanks in large part to the militia and police officers who favor its advantage in close quarters as a handgun caliber weapon that doesn’t feature the same maneuverability limitations and kick as an assault rifle or a firearm of that sort.

Now, as it pertains to FN Herstal and the P90/Ps90, the story has dual origins. Yes, FN decided to develop a new kind of SMG, but it was the demand of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) for a replacement for the 9x19mm cartridge that led to the development of the P90 as well as its accompanying, compatible firearms. The 9x19mm is a quality cartridge, as evidenced by its successful use in guns like the Glock 17, Glock 19, Glock 26, Glock 43, Glock 34, Glock 17L, Sig Sauer P229, and more. Still, as is always the case, innovation rules the roost – NATO called for weapons using a new caliber which could offer greater “personal protection in last-resort situations when the user is directly endangered by the enemy.” NATO’s official request detailed a number of specifications to be covered by this new request, including:

• The new cartridge was requested to be capable of outperforming the 9x19mm in every way, including superior range, accuracy, and terminal performance along with the ability to penetrate body armor.
• Shoulder-fired guns of this caliber were to weigh less than 3kg while offering no less than 20-rounds of ammunition.
• Handheld guns using this new caliber were to weigh less than 1kg while offering no less than 20-rounds of ammunition.
• Both shoulder-fired and handheld guns of this new caliber were to be able to be carried hands-free at all times, and function in any environment, climate, or condition.
• The cartridge was to be as affordable as the 9x19mm, if not more affordable.

FN took up the call before any other firearms manufacturer in answering NATO’s request, developing a small caliber 5.7x28mm cartridge. This was called the SS90 and went into production with the new P90 machine gun in 1990 (hench the ’90’ billing in the P90 name). Belgian special forces became the first military to employ the P90 during the 1991 Gulf War, to great effect – Belgium reported nothing but positives in regards to its P90 experience. FN shortly revised the design of this cartridge, introducing a new version of it that was 0.11 inches shorter and could better be used in a new handgun which would become the FN Five-SeveN. This cartridge, the SS190, was fully introduced in 1993 and has been regarded as a first-class cartridge ever since. In 2003, NATO decided to undergo a series of tests amongst 9x19mm replacement cartridges in order to standardize one. FN’s 5.7x28mm cartridge was the decisive winner of this ‘competition’, but Germany and a select few other countries with competing interests prevented the standardization of the FN cartridge. Nonetheless, FN’s new cartridge is widely regarded as the class in 9x19mm replacements, and the FN P90 is widely regarded as the class in submachine guns.

FN P90/PS90 Design and Ammunition: How Many Bullets Does it Hold?

A number of FN P90 variants have been developed, of both the semi-automatic and military variety. However, the standard FN P90 specifications are as follows:

• Weight: 2.6 kg (5.7 lb) (P90), 2.85 kg (6.3 lb) (PS90).
• Length: 50.5 cm (19.9 in) (P90), 66.6 cm (26.2 in) (PS90).
• Barrel Length: 26.4 cm (10.4 in) (P90), 40.7 cm (16.0 in) (PS90).
• Width: 5.5 cm (2.2 in).
• Height: 21 cm (8.3 in).
• Cartridge: FN 5.7x28mm.
• Action: Straight Blowback, Closed Bolt.
• Rate of Fire: 900 Rounds Per Minute.
• Muzzle Velocity: 715 m/s (2,350 ft/s).
• Effective Firing Range: 200 m (660 ft).
• Maximum Firing Range: 1,800 m (5,900 ft).
• Feed System: 50-round detachable box magazine.
• Sights: Tritium-illuminated reflex sight, back-up iron sights.

As one can plainly see, the FN P90 has an ammo capacity of 50-rounds (well greater than the 20-round minimum outlined by NATO, one will note). This ammunition is loaded in a unique, top-mounted magazine. The ammo capacity is an impressive achievement from FN, given the lightweight and portable nature of the gun which, as previously noted, uses a unique and exciting design. The P90 uses a thumbhole in the frame in order to serve as a pistol grip, and a trigger guard foregrip for improved handling. The P90 is fully ambidextrous, and is billed by FN as the “first fully ambidextrous individual automatic weapon” – a shaky boast, but an impressive one if it is indeed accurate (the term “fully ambidextrous” is a bit of a grey-area in terms of which guns accurately fit under this definition). Above all else, the P90 is designed to be easily carried, weighing in at just 2.5 kg and using a rounded, contoured body which is designed to prevent the gun from getting caught clothing or equipment. The P90 is also intended to require minimal maintenance, as evidenced by its modular four-component group design. The P90 does not hold up as well in terms of ballistic performance as larger-caliber guns and rifles, although this is to be expected. In fact, it is the diminished chance of deadly force which makes it such a popular choice among certain law enforcement agencies.

Is the FN P90 Legal In The United States?

In a word, no. As a fully-automatic weapon, the FN P90 would be hard pressed to gain legal status in any country in the world, let alone the United States. However, demand of the P90 from the civilian market has bred the development and release of FN Ps90, a carbine version of the P90 which accepts standard P90 magazines but acts as a semi-automatic SMG. The PS90 is available in a number of different iterations, including:

• PS90 Standard: The current PS90 model available from FN, the PS90 standard uses a picatinny rail for easy accessorization and is available in either olive or black.
• PS90 TR: Now discontinued, the PS90 TR implements a “triple rail” receiver like the one found in the P90 TR. What “triple rail” means is the gun uses a standard picatinny rail, like the one found in the PS90 standard, as well as two side rails for even more accessorization possibilities.
• PS90 USG: Also discontinued, the PS90 USG comes equipped with an aluminum reflex sight housing. This sight is removable, and despite the gun being discontinued the USG reflex sight is still currently available as a standalone accessory.

FN P90 and PS90: Price and Where To Buy

To reiterate, the FN P90 is not available for purchase. If you own one, it is either via working for the military or a law enforcement agency, or you have some explaining to do. The PS90, on the other hand, is very available. Pricing is generally dependant on the condition of the PS90 (new, used, wear and tear), but the price range generally falls from $1,200-$1,500. The MSRP from FN themselves is $1,449, but a used model from a third-party seller can always be found for cheaper. Ammunition is widely available due to the acclaim of the caliber and weapon, which means that despite it being specific by nature, ammo is not overly expensive or unreasonable in terms of price.

FN P90 and PS90 Accessories

A number of excellent and practical accessories are available which can easily take the PS90 to the next level, offering a more customizable, personal experience. In all honesty, the FN P90 and PS90 are such great, versatile weapons that accessories are far from being a necessity. The gun handles exceptionally well, diminishing the need for grip and handle-improving accessories, and the 50-round ammunition capacity renders the need for an extended magazine moot. However, there are several accessories that warrant owning, including several of our favorites:

• FNH P90/PS90 Barrel Side Rail: Given that the PS90 TR has been discontinued, it stands to reason that the need for side rails on the P90 and PS90 needs to be satisfied. This side rail, which is developed by FN, does the job – color compatible with the black models and made for easy installation, try this model if you’re looking for a handy side rail.

• Assault Systems Discreet FN Case For FN P90 and PS90: While the FN P90 and PS90 are manageable, easily carried guns, for the sake of safe transportation of the guns across larger distances, or for storage, a case can be very useful. • FNH P90/PS90 Magazine Pouch: While the FN P90 is as straight-forward as it gets in terms of carrying, human beings only have so many free hands to carry things with. Conclusion

The bottom line is, the FN P90 fits a certain niche comfortably for gun owners. If you’re looking for a compact, concealed carry gun, this is not the gun for you. If you’re looking for a power-packed, stopping power machine, this is also not what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a highly portable personal defense weapon that is unique in design, employs a high-quality, reliable cartridge, and achieves submachine gun billing, the P90 or the PS90 is the gun for you.
