The modern gun industry is packed with cheap firearms but in most cases, you get what you pay for. However, every now and then affordable handguns are released that surprise even the toughest critics. Some of the best cheap guns are actually rifles and shotguns, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of decent quality cheap revolvers and pistols. Today we’re going to examine the best budget handguns on the market and see who delivers the best bang for your buck.

Best Low Price Guns

While there aren’t so many handguns under 200 dollars, there are some that definitely stick out. The term budget gun is loosely defined and is generally used to refer to firearms under $400 or so, but we’re here to scrutinize the top guns under 200 dollars give or take. Some may be sold for more and some may be sold for less, but I think $200 is a safe measure of calling a handgun cheap. I will try to keep most of the firearms here under that benchmark but exceptions will definitely be made. This is especially true given that prices change and different vendors offer sales all the time for discount guns.

One of the most interesting discoveries I made in my search for the best cheap handguns was that they came from all over the world. From Italy and the United States to Brazil and Germany, discount guns are made across the globe. However, one of the things I learned is that some good manufacturers make crappy budget guns (that’s you, Chiappa, and the freaking Beretta Pico).

Kel-Tec P32 Pistol

There are cheap guns and then there are cheap gun manufacturers. Kel-Tec has built a reputation for crafting affordable firearms and the P32 pistol is an interesting budget gun. Besides being the lightest .32 Auto ever created, the DAO gun can be yours for just over $200. Likewise, Taurus Firearms has a decent selection of budget pistols that can found for under $250, I recommend finding a used PT-92 or G2.

One of my favorite underrated budget pistols has got to be the SCCY CPX2. I truly don’t get why more people haven’t picked these guys up. They’re probably one of the best CCWs under $250 packed with high-quality engineering and excellent customizability.

SCCY CPX-2 Pistols

Best Budget Revolvers

There are a few reasons why it’s easier to make a better budget revolver than a pistol but I think cheap revolvers are generally better than cheap pistols.

Anyone looking for a cheap revolver should definitely consider the German EAA Windicator. German engineering is renowned around the world and that reputation holds true to their firearms. The Windicator may not be pretty or even have such great handling, but it’s damn reliable and has an overall great bang for your buck score.

Snub-Nose EAA Blued Windicator

Another great revolver is the single-action Ruger Wrangler series. These nifty six-shooters can be yours for under $200 and they offer the quality you expect from other Rugers. While it’s no CCW, it’s certainly one of the best cheap revolvers on the market without a doubt.

My favorite budget revolver has got to be the Heritage Manufacturing Rough Rider revolver. These “cowboy guns” are shockingly cheap for how nice they are. Yes, they are old-fashioned revolvers based on the Colt Single-Action Army revolver but they shoot very well and can shoot both .22LR and .22 magnum. These wheel guns are a great addition to your collection and will only take you back a bit over $150.

 Heritage Manufacturing Rough Rider revolver

Cheap Handguns Under 150 Breakdown

If you want to know how much does a gun cost when you strip down most of the features and aesthetics, it doesn’t usually get below $150. This is a safe benchmark for handguns because it’s hard to find any legitimate pistol or revolver for less. That’s not to say that there aren’t cheap real guns under 100 dollars but it is a rarity. In fact, I’d say $200 is still considered a cheap handgun. Guns for less than this should be approached with caution since there’s probably a good reason they’re so cheap. Nevertheless, it’s important to do your research because sometimes the price can drop drastically simply because it’s made in a 2nd or 3rd world country.

When it comes to budget firearms it’s hard to have a conversation without mentioning Hi-Point and the Hi-Point C9 pistol. Hi-Points are probably the most hotly debated guns on the planet but, truth be told, they offer an excellent bang for your buck score. This ugly shooter can be yours for around $150 and it does the job but not much more.

“Beautiful” Hi-Point C9

If you’re looking for the ultimate cheap handgun then you gotta check out the ALTOR Corp Pistol. While it looks exactly like a glue gun, it’s actually a single-shot firearm available in .380 ACP and 9mm. It’s cumbersome to handle and shoot but it does shoot. I don’t know why anyone would actually want to own this gun but it’s one of the most unique firearms I’ve seen. Just remove the barrel and jam a single round in and hope for the best. The barrel is rifled so it’s surprisingly accurate given the fact that it looks like it was designed by a 4th grader.

ALTOR Corp Pistol

Best Cheap 9mm Pistol

There are several solid 9mm pistols you can find under $250 including the Taurus Millenium G2, SCCY CPX2, and Hi-Point C9. Obviously, none of these guns are perfect and they are all bound to have haters. I personally really like my Taurus and I even used it for daily carry for a while. I also like the SCCY but it’s an acquired taste and isn’t as reliable as the others. Then we have the Hi-Point C9 which is arguably the most hated gun on the internet but, honestly, it works and it is ridiculously durable. I know there are plenty of people who’ve had nightmare experiences with Taurus, but assuming all works as it’s supposed to, the G2 or G2C is probably my pick for the best cheap 9mm pistol.

Taurus Millennium G2

Best 22 Handgun Under $200

I’ve been shooting .22 for as long as I can remember and it’s hard not to love this cartridge. Because .22 ammo is so cheap, .22 has sort of become the Everyman’s firearm for practice and target shooting. As a result, it’s only logical that the best cheap 22 pistol will be something sought out by shooters of all ages. Whether you’re looking to boost your collection or give your kid their first firearm, a quality .22 handgun is versatile and good to own.

ATI GSG Firefly

Although I really love my .22 Rough Rider revolver, I think the overall best 22 handgun under $200 has got to be the American Tactical Imports GSG Firefly. This nifty little rimfire was designed as a training pistol but works great for all kinds of .22 shooting. The German-made pistol was crafted to replicate the popular Sig Sauer P226 but a tad smaller. The controls and feel of the gun are excellent and really do a great job of mirroring the Sig. This gun offers a fantastic bang for your buck and can be yours for around $190.

Best Cheap Handgun Overall

Some people will ask me, how much does a handgun cost and there’s no objective answer for that. I’ve used $300 guns that I liked better than some $1000 models. It all boils down to preference and the level of premium features and aesthetics available. However, I do think that there is a way to compare the best budget guns and get a clear picture of which offer the best bang for your buck. It’s hard just to pick one so I think my favorite budget revolver would be the classic Rough Rider revolver while my favorite pistol is the ATI GSG Firefly.

The S333 Thunderstruck double-barrel revolver is definitely innovative but not all novelties are successful so let's see if it makes the cut

The post Standard Manufacturing S333 Thunderstruck Review appeared first on Gunivore.

The Standard Manufacturing Thunderstruck double barrel handgun caught the attention of many shooters, especially CCW enthusiasts. However, I think it’s fair to say that most people looked at this gun with skepticism in fear that it was gimmicky and not a revolutionary concealed carry firearm.

Standard has a wide range of firearms including some pretty wild semi-auto shotguns, single-action revolvers, 1911s, and a modern sporting rifle. Nevertheless, many people only know Standard for their most famous double-barrel firearm, the DP-12 shotgun. In today’s review, we’re going to take a look at their next entry into the double-barrel firearms market, the S333 Thunderstruck.

Keep in mind that the S333 Thunderstruck ATF status is not that of a machine gun despite the fact that it fires more than one round per trigger pull. It’s hard to confidently say one way or the other why the government decided to leave this gun alone, but I imagine it helped to be a revolver and not being in the media spotlight (re: bump stocks)

S333 Thunderstruck

S333 Thunderstruck Reviews

The Thunderstruck S333 has all the ingredients for a market failure given the fact that it’s an inexpensive gimmicky firearm. It’s hard to imagine many people were thinking “Gee, I wish I had a budget mini double-barrel revolver”. Nevertheless, the 333 in the name comes from the idea of the firearms rule of three: that most self-defense situations take place within three yards, with three shots fired in under three seconds.”

While the S333 does seem to be made with high-quality components, the construction of the firearm is not ideal by any means. Because they really wanted to attract CCW shooters, they made sure to include several safety options but these can make the gun difficult to handle. For instance, the 7075 aircraft-grade aluminum with anodized finished frame makes the gun sturdy but the entire trigger system is a disaster.

Standard gave the S333 an elongated trigger designed for a two-finger pull. One of the issues with this is that it completely interferes with the grip and even depresses into one of the finger grooves. This is frankly a serious bit of oversight that was probably overlooked due to the other complexities of the revolver.

Thunderstruck Revolver

There is a partial trigger guard that doesn’t get in the way and a decent blade safety on the trigger, but it’s the trigger pull that really got me. Besides the awkward two-finger trigger pull, it takes about 20 lbs. of force to fire the S333. That’s pretty crazy when you consider the 6-7 lbs pull of the Glock 19 and the 12 lb pull of the Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard 38.

One of the things I did like about the Thunderstruck was the usage of the .22WMR cartridge. I love 22 magnum guns and I also happen to think it’s one of the best calibers for self-defense. All things considered, the S333 does shoot well once you get a hang for the trigger. Its accuracy is fair and the double-barrel gives it a shotgun-like quality ideal for taking down threats.

In terms of its overall capability for CCW, it has enough integral safety mechanisms to allay any concerns while still not really inhibiting quick firing. Likewise, it’s a pretty small revolver so it can be concealed easily, though I would never use this as the first resort. This is the kind of gun that would go in my glove compartment or in the nightstand or even on my ankle, but I don’t think it’s an adequate primary carry gun.

The bottom line is that it is a bit awkward of a firearm but it does fit in a niche so I’m sure it will still interest some folks. Even though the sights aren’t bad, I wouldn’t expect very good accuracy until you’ve practiced the double trigger pull for a while. Part of this is the serious reset on the trigger that is so far from intuitive that you’re bound to struggle with it.

Conclusion

Although I’m not the biggest fan of the S333 Thunderstruck I can definitely appreciate Standard Manufacturing looking to innovate the industry. Being an innovator means you’re going to have ideas that don’t always pan out, and that’s okay. Standard Manufacturing is a respected gunmaker and has some of the top firearms on the market, especially in the shotgun department. Overall, I think the S333 has its place and many people can and will enjoy it, but it’s just not your everyday revolver any means.

Ruger has built a reputation for crafting quality handguns and the GP100 revolver series is certainly no exception. These American-made wheel guns were originally produced in 1985 but have seen continued success for over three decades. While there are definitely aligning features within the GP family, the current line is among the most diverse revolver series on the market.

Just to illustrate how diverse this lineup is, GP revolvers are available in .357 magnum, .327 federal magnum, .38 special, 10mm auto, .44 special, and even .22LR. Additionally, the double action GP100 is offered in three barrel lengths, two finishes, several capacities, and many grips (which we’ll get to later). Likewise, Ruger also manufactures these revolvers with either fixed or adjustable sights and full or short shrouds. At the end of the day, this is one of the most versatile revolver series on the market that seemingly has at least one model for every wheel gun enthusiast. It’s worth noting that the GP100 has consistently been a top-10 selling revolver over the years and peaked at number 1 in 2018 among all revolvers. Let’s get to it and take a closer look at the GP100 family.

Ruger GP100 357 Magnum

The GP100 .357 magnum is the most popular model of the series thanks to its classic design and traditional caliber. However, there are still plenty of options to choose from even for those who want a .357 model. For example, Ruger currently produces a .357 GP100 in at least five barrel lengths, two finishes, fixed or adjustable sights, and full or short shrouds. Another reason why many go for these models is because they can handle all .357 mag factory loads plus .38 special factory cartridges.

The classic model in the GP100 line is the 4.2” barreled .357 magnum with a blued finish. At 9.5” long, this gun is carried by some while others use it as a range mule or for home defense. It’s medium-size build makes it a great choice for multi-purpose shooting and it’s definitely user-friendly. Like many revolvers, disassembly is a breeze but many folks like the transfer bar safety mechanism to protect against accidental discharge. This model has a simple but effective sight system and manageable recoil which makes follow-up shots surprisingly smooth.

Some shooters want something even smaller and more concealable – Enter the 2.5” barreled stainless steel .357 magnum. Measuring in at 8” long, the snub nose revolver is a bulldog that is durable, ergonomic, and dependable. Ruger gave this model fiber optic sights which make a big difference but many shooters like how the diminutive wheel gun has a 7-round capacity. I like this as a purse or truck gun or even for EDC. The trigger is nothing to write home about but the intuitive controls and decent handling make this a top choice snub nose revolver.

For those looking for something a little bigger and more intimidating, the full-size .357 is an excellent choice. With a 6” barrel and 11.5” overall length, I really enjoyed how this gun felt in my hands and it shot even better. I don’t always shoot well with .357, but I had no problem maintaining solid accuracy with this gun. It’s worth noting that this is a classic six-shooter and isn’t very light. The adjustable sight system also helps keep accuracy on point not to mention the 1:18.75″ RH twist.

Ruger GP100 22LR

Many people laugh at the idea of a .22LR revolver, but they are growing in popularity so it’s no wonder why there’s a Ruger GP100 22 wheel gun. While sharing many of the beloved standard GP specs, the 22 model has a whopping 10-round capacity which is definitely intriguing. This is what I would call a “fun gun” – Something to take to the range and enjoy some good ol’ plinking or target shooting. However, I believe this gun is ideal for introducing revolvers to women and young shooters who may not be able to handle more traditional revolver calibers at first. In other words, this could be the gun to teach your kids how to shoot. As a .22, this shoots smoothly and effortlessly, providing fantastic accuracy and control. I love plinking so I can appreciate a .22 revolver, but this gun is not for everyone.

Ruger GP100 44 Special

.44 Special may not be the most common cartridge out there, but Ruger currently manufactures two GP100 models built for it. These “special edition” revolvers are somewhat atypical compared to the rest of the line, but aren’t very special otherwise. The common Ruger .44 model is a snub nose with a classic walnut grip that isn’t great for carrying or prolonged range time. Yes, it’s a high-quality firearm but I don’t think it’s the kind of revolver for someone looking for an EDC or range mule.

Ruger GP100 Match Champion

Ruger decided to take their best-selling revolver series and kick it up a notch with the Match Champion line. As the name suggests, these models have the standard features of a GP revolver but with a few changes ideal for competition shooting. For instance, these grips have stippled sides, enhanced target crowns, and polished and improved internal mechanisms and triggers. Ruger recently launched a 10mm auto version, but the .357 is still the go-to option.

Ruger GP100 6 Inch

Many shooters are more particular about the size of their revolver than they are about the caliber. That being the case, we’ve broken down the options for you based on barrel length.

For those looking for a longer, 6” barrel GP100, there are 3-4 primary options to choose from. For starters, the popular .357 magnum blued six-shooter is a great choice. Additionally, at $769, it’s one of the more affordable options among the GP series. Ruger also has the identical firearm but with a satin stainless finish that markets for $829. The last major option is also a .357 magnum but with a different grip and a 7-round capacity. This can be intriguing for people, but the $899 price tag seems like a big jump for what you’re getting.

Ruger GP100 4 Inch

A lot of folks ask me about a 4” GP100, but these medium-size Rugers are actually slightly bigger, measuring in with 4.2” barrels. Now 0.2” isn’t much, but I think it’s important to acknowledge nonetheless. The GP100 series has a great selection of models in this size, including the best-selling .357 mag blued six-shooter. Shooters can also dish out the extra cash and go for the stainless steel version, but the blued is plenty durable so it’s really a matter of preference. Like the 6” models, there is also a 4.2” barreled model with a cushioned rubber grip with a hardwood insert and a 7-round capacity for $899. While there are a few special edition 4.2” models, I think the best is a Talo Distributor Exclusive with a beautiful ornate design and checkered hardwood grips.

Talo 357 Magnum Revolver

Ruger GP100 3 Inch

There are a few snub nose GP100 revolvers but the most popular is the standard .357 mag model. Like the rest of the line, there are a few special edition variants which are interesting, most of which simply have different grips. However, some of these models use an alloy steel in their construction and Novak sights which do give them a nice premium feel.

.357 Magnum Talo Revolver

Ruger GP100 Grips

One of the main reasons why the GP100 revolvers are so popular is because of their enhanced grip systems. While there is a wide variety of standard grips within the line, many of these are made by Hogue, one of the world’s top grip manufacturers. These high-quality grips don’t just look nice, they fit the hand so well that it has a direct effect on handling and accuracy. Shooting with these grips really makes you feel like you are wielding the firearm.

So Hogue makes most of the all-rubber grips for these guns but then there are hybrid grips, with both rubber and wood. I think it’s fair to say the wood is really just for looks, but the rubber still does a good job at improving control. I preferred the all-rubber grips compared to the hybrids but then you have to consider the Ruger GP100 wood grips.

The GP100 wood grips are available on the Match Champion revolvers as well as some distributor exclusive models. Now some of these grips are absolutely beautiful, like the Talo Exclusive .357 Hogue Walnut Grip and the 7-shot snub nose Talo checkered hardwood grip. However, some of the wood grips are more than just for looks. For example, the Hogue stippled hardwood and Ruger checkered hardwood grips do a great job at providing control and ergonomics. However, I still think I’ll take the Hogue all-rubber grips any day.

GP100 with Hogue Walnut Grips

Ruger GP100 Holster

When it comes to revolver holsters, many people choose to go for a classic leather option. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that AlienGear Holsters does have a great holster for 4.2” models of the GP100. Their Cloak Tuck IWB holster is comfortable and affordable so I highly recommend it. On the other hand, Bianchi has an excellent leather thumbsnap belt holster for 4.2” barrel revolvers that is both stylish and effective. Bianchi has several other models suitable for other GP guns but so does Triple K. I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shoutout to Craftholsters and their GP100 holster collection. This is the kind of revolver that deserves a premium custom leather holster and Craft offers beautiful and functional options that won’t break the bank.

Conclusion

The GP100 is a fantastic collection of revolvers with a variety of options to choose from. Ruger has a solid reputation for manufacturing high performance handguns and these are no exception. Whether you’re looking for a revolver for home defense, range time, or EDC, the GP100 might just be right for you.

The name Uberti commands a certain respect and admiration. They are known for their Old West reproductions all over the world. This company manufactures weapons which are imported into the US by Cimarron, Taylor’s, and Stoeger. This is our Uberti review, but I don’t really think there is a review that would do them justice. In the case of firearms such as these, you just need to hold one and see for yourself.

If you are any kind of enthusiast or collector, or if you are simply into the nostalgia, the romanticizing, or the re-enactment of Civil War battles – this is one company you cannot afford to overlook.

These are traditional firearms in the fullest sense of the word – a great combination of archaic and modern. Also, I know there is a disagreement over the distinction between “replica” and “reproduction”, but for the purposes of this post, I will be using them interchangeably.

Uberti Firearms

The Uberti company of Italy was founded in 1959 by Aldo Uberti, who died in 1998. In his youth, Uberti had an apprenticeship at the Beretta company, one of the most famous names in the business. Interestingly enough, Beretta bought the Uberti company in the year 2000, so the thing sort of came full circle at that time.

Officially titled A. Uberti, Srl., this company has the wonderful slogan “History Repeats Itself”. Uberti was fascinated with old-time 19th-century firearms, and he wanted to make sure that these obsolete weapons would not remain obsolete forever.

He went ahead and created reproductions which caught the attention of many shooters. He took the originals and brought them 100 years forward, using modern materials, techniques, and equipment, but also knowing when to use the hands of master craftsmen, as in the days of old.

Because of Uberti’s efforts, the company he founded is now a name well-known to competition shooters, battle re-enactors, hunters, outdoorsmen, collectors, and basically those who are interested in these nostalgic weapons.

There are reproductions of originals made by Colt, Remington, Winchester, Springfield, Smith & Wesson – all from the second half of the 19th century, and all made with the highest quality in mind.

The reproductions which Uberti manufacture are very close to the originals, and in some facets they even outdo them. The materials are tougher, the coatings and hardenings are more durable, and they are way more affordable than actual antique weapons.

Uberti Revolvers

Some of Uberti’s guns are for traditional black powder loads, and others have been converted to cartridge use. Black powder revolvers are messy, and they take some work to load and reload, but many shooters don’t mind putting in the time and effort to use the old cap and ball firearm. With cartridges, things are usually a lot smoother and more streamlined when compared to black powder.

Black powder revolvers

Models of the black powder revolvers are precise replicas of their originals but are built from higher quality materials. These include the classic police, Army, and Navy revolvers, plus the Colt Walker, Dragoon, and pocket revolvers.

Colt 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver

These were all the rage back in the mid 19th century, and they are still managing to turn heads and wow those who shoot them. It’s so nostalgic, and it is not surprising why so many people are interested in purchasing such weapons – they are fun!

In this series, Uberti has the Buffalo Bill commemorative revolver, the 1858 Army Target carbine, and also the 1860 Army revolver. That last model is one of the most famous weapons Colt ever produced, and it was carried by US Army troops as their official sidearm for many years, until it was replaced by the 1873 Single-Action Army.

Uberti Buffalo Bill Commemorative Revolver

Case-hardened with a blue finish, along with a steel backstrap and brass trigger guard, this model remains one of Uberti’s most popular items. There are also a brass and fluted steel model in the 1860 Army series.

Uberti 1860 Army Revolver

Cartridge revolvers

After the 1870s came about, cartridges were replacing cap and ball revolvers, and fast. Seemingly overnight, those six-shooters became a thing of the past. But that isn’t quite what happened. Some of the percussion models were converted to cartridge use, and those replicas can be found today in Uberti’s catalog.

There is a plethora of cartridge-utilizing weaponry which is available from Uberti. In 2019, they introduced 2 new models to their Outlaws & Lawmen series. It is a line devoted to fine replicas of guns used by famous gunslingers, such as Jesse James and his brother Frank, and Doc Holliday.

Uberti Frank James Revolver

There is also the series of 1875 top-break revolvers and Russian top-break weapons, which were engineered and designed by Maj. George Schofield to aid the mounted cavalry troops.

Let’s face it: it is much easier to engage the enemy with a top-break action, certainly on horseback! Here are the specs for one of the 1875 No. 3 models:

Model: 1875 No. 3 Top Break Revolver, 2nd Model

Action: Top break, centerfire

Caliber: .38 Special

Capacity: 6-shot

Barrel length: 7”

Overall length: 10.8”

Weight: 2.9 lbs

MSRP: $1,179

Blue steel frame and blue steel backstrap, it comes with a case-hardened trigger guard. Other chamberings for this particular model include .44-40,.44 Russian, and .45 Colt. The 1873 Cattleman model is a cartridge revolver which deserves its own section, and that is coming up later in this article. For now, let’s talk a bit about the company’s rifles.

Uberti 1875 No. 3 Top Break Revolver 2nd Model

Uberti Rifles

In the list of rifles which Uberti manufactures, you can find the 1860 Henry, the 1866 Yellowboy, the 1873 and its competition-ready 1873 counterpart, as well as lever-action rifles and Springfield trapdoor models. These are available in different chamberings, barrel sizes, and finishes, and the prices vary accordingly. There is also the 1873 Limited Edition Short Rifle Deluxe, spanking new for 2019, chambered in .45 Colt with a 20” barrel.

Uberti Springfield Trapdoor Rifle

Some of their best-sellers:

One of their more curious weapons is the 1876 Centennial. It is a replica of the Winchester with the same name, but it is constructed in a way which surpasses the original in terms of durability and accuracy.

Uberti 1876 Centennial Rifle

This rifle also comes in .45-60 and .45-75. The frame and lever are case hardened, and the buttplate is blued. Adjustable rear sight and blade front sight, with a side-loading gate. The 1876 Centennial was designed for hunting buffalo and other large game, and concurrently its caliber is a powerful and deadly one.

Uberti Cattleman

Uberti boasts over 100 distinct models of the classic 1873 Single Action Army. It is manufactured in a wide variety of configurations, chamberings, barrel lengths, grips, finishes, engravings, and of course prices. There are also special editions and matching sets of the Cattleman, and even a carbine version or two.

The Cattleman model was issued to troops of all military branches, starting with the cavalry, and it was quick to be picked up by outlaws and renegades. Dubbed the Colt “Peacemaker”, it came with a 7.5” blued barrel and cylinder, along with a case-hardened frame and grips of quality walnut. A model plated in nickel was issued to scouts, apparently, and other variations could be seen on the scene in no time.

The 3 main calibers used in this series are .45 Colt, .357 Magnum, and .44-40. There are also a few models chambered in .38 Special and .22 LR. The Colt Single Action Army is a revolver which seemingly epitomizes the Old West, and incidentally, I also feel the same way about old Winchester levers. The Cattleman simply oozes frontier glory, it is fun to handle and shoot, and it’s a popular replica used in cowboy action shooting competitions.

Here are the specs for one of the best sellers from the older Cattleman line:

Model: 1873 Cattleman Old West (Old model)

Action: Single Action

Capacity: 6-shot cylinder

Caliber: .45b Colt

Overall length: 11”

Barrel length: 5.5”

Weight: 2.3 lbs

MSRP: $709

Uberti Cattleman 1873

This model comes with a steel backstrap and steel trigger guard. That’s all well and good, but honestly, it’s the finish which makes this gun so irresistible. With a walnut grip and that antique Old West finish, it is a real stunner. Definitely not saying everyone should own this replica since it is really a matter of preference, but I would love to get my hands on an original someday!

Conclusion

So there’s Uberti at a glance. Their rifles and revolvers are accurate and well-built. It is no wonder they produce weapons for several of the United States’ finest importers. These are guns which are not just for show. They work, and they work well. If you get through firing one of these for the first time or two, and you don’t have a big grin on your face- well, I daresay you’re doing it wrong!

Get out there and have a good time; that’s what these models are for, after all. Whether it is at an official competition or a lazy afternoon of plinking (those .22 LR models are perfect for the latter, by the way), go outside and get your shot on. Some people will buy Uberti firearms and never use them. But it’s important to remember that these are not antiques, they are replicas. So yes, get yourself an old-time revolver or rifle, move on out, bring along a buddy, and shoot to your heart’s content.

Although revolvers may be the firearm of the past, there are several companies looking to make them a part of the future. Polymer pistols are still far more popular, especially among people who carry. Nevertheless, there are some pretty innovative and redesigned wheel guns that are taking the market by storm. In fact, many firearm enthusiasts believe revolvers make a better carry option instead of semi-auto pistols. For starters, they are significantly easier to use and are known to be more reliable. This is especially practical for young or female shooters who may have trouble racking a pistol. Plus, single-action and double-action options can make carrying a firearm even safer. On the other hand, many CCW owners believe revolvers don’t offer enough bullets to be effective in a dangerous situation. Actually, most cops didn’t start carrying semi-auto pistols until the 1970’s. Concealed carry revolvers, especially small-frame snub noses, are often easier to conceal and can even be carried in pocket. Let’s get the show on the road and take a look at the best concealed carry revolvers.

357 Revolver

Kimber K6S

The Kimber K6s is arguably the best modern revolver not made by Ruger or Smith and Wesson. These top-shelf wheel guns are among the most dependable and ergonomic in their class, which ultimately justifies their high price tag. While Kimber Manufacturing may not be the most common gunmaker, they are nonetheless one of the most impressive. The up-and-coming manufacturer has garnered one hell of a name for themselves thanks primarily to their high-end 1911 pistols. However, the American firearms producer has recently pumped out a few high-quality revolvers that are definitely worth your consideration.

Although crafted from top-grade stainless steel, these wheel guns are remarkably lightweight, making them a great choice for concealed carry. That being said, keep in mind that the reduced weight will affect its perceived recoil from its commanding .357 magnum chambering. Overall, it’s hard not to love these beautiful revolvers, especially with their enhanced trigger and ergonomic grip angle. I had trouble finding the perfect holster for the K6S but there’s no issues with opting for a leather Galco. They market an expensive speed paddle holster that is pretty nice, but I’d go for their cheaper Stow N’ Go IWB holster ($38).

Kimber K6s Revolver

38 Revolver

S&W 642

Smith and Wesson is arguably the king of revolvers and American firearms in general. The iconic gunmaker has been releasing reliable handguns for generations and they show no signs of slowing down any time soon. S&W currently markets well over 100 revolvers, but I can’t help but love the Performance Center Model 642 Enhanced Action. These glorious, precise, and fine-tuned wheel guns are as effective as they are gorgeous. In general, you know you’re getting premium quality with their Performance Center collection. Like most Smith and Wesson products, these revolvers are a seamless blend of modern technology and old-world craftsmanship.

In addition to their custom wood grips, the 642 revolvers contain several other high-end materials, including aluminum alloy and stainless steel. I was initially drawn to carry one of these guys because of their modern hammerless design. This small design change ultimately makes a huge difference for folks looking to conceal carry. I was pleasantly surprised to find the Comp-Tac 2 O’clock IWB holster for the 642. This innovative little concealed carry rig is meant for appendix carrying and is decently comfortable. The lightweight Kydex construction and nylon belt clip help keep weight and comfort manageable while sacrificing some overall durability.

9mm Revolver

Charter Arms Pitbull

Charter Arms has had a rocky journey to get to where they are today, but they’re back to producing some pretty solid wheel guns. These American-made guns are particularly known for their durability and reliability, but they’re not too bad looking either. Since the days of old, Charter has tremendously improved their accuracy and overall performance by making big changes to their internal designs. For instance, they now incorporate eight barrel grooves, as opposed to the normal six. They’ve also developed the revolutionary hammer block transfer bar safety system which has been adopted throughout the industry.

While Charter is better known for their Bulldog, I’ve become a big fan of the Pitbull. These attractive little shooters come in a variety of cartridge options, but I like the 9mm with the trademark Blacknitride finish. These revolvers may look like your average models but there are a few hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. For example, the 5-shot Charter Pitbull utilizes their popular rimless cartridge extractor assembly system, providing shooters with rapid reloads. Furthermore, the Blacknitride finish is a nice touch that is scratch-resistant and will keep your revolver looking new. There aren’t a ton of holster options out there for the Pitbull, but I liked the Italian leather holster from Vega. It’s cheap, it’s tough, and it can handle a wide variety of revolvers.

Charter Pitbull

44 Magnum Revolver

S&W 329PD

As the second Smith and Wesson on this list, the S&W 329PD is freaking amazing. For starters, it’s hard to get over their stunning and unique design – it’s truly something to behold. While the enhanced aesthetics and improved features will cost you a pretty penny, it’s certainly worth checking out. The legendary gunmaker incorporated several things that make the 329PD hard to pass up. Their mission was to craft a revolver that could offer unmatched strength and durability while managing to keep weight at a minimum. The result is something extraordinary and might just be perfect for your next CCW.

S&W started things off by combining their titanium cylinder with an innovative Scandium alloy frame. Keep in mind that with this insanely strong build, it’s never been easier to comfortably shoot .44 magnum. This is especially impressive considering they managed to get that into an easy-to-carry package. Additionally, it’s hard to miss their HI-VIZ fiber-optic front sights, which make them great for nighttime carrying. Similarly, I was a big fan of their beautiful and ergonomic wood grips, which are sure to impress anyone who sees them. 329PD holsters aren’t so easy to find, so I recommend sticking with the popular Bianchi 111 Cyclone Hip model.

22 Magnum Revolver

North American Arms Sidewinder

North American Arms is definitely not your standard firearms manufacturer. In fact, the Utah-based gunmakers are known for their innovative and unique Mini-Revolvers. These special pocket-pistols are reminiscent of those old-fashioned derringers but offer uncompromising modern performance. These highly-rated wheel guns even feature swing-out cylinders, despite their diminutive size. You can argue about how practical these .22 Mag revolvers are, but there’s no denying their attractive aesthetics and collector’s appeal. They may not be perfect as a primary sidearm, but they sure are a great secondary option. In fact, they are particularly useful for when concealability is a major concern. In my limited experience with one of these guys, I’d say they’re money up to 15 yards away – there’s not much more you can ask for in a gun this size. If you’re looking to holster a Sidewinder, your best bet is to check out North American Arms’ website. I’d go with either the mini-revolver ankle holster for a sweet $20 or their HIP-PUG IWB black leather holster ($33).

NAA Sidewinder

Ruger Revolvers

Ruger Sp101

Ruger has made quite a name for themselves over the years for their pistols and rifles, but the popular gunmaker also has a tremendous collection of revolvers. As with many of their other firearms, the SP101 is a modern take on the classic wheel gun design. Ruger offers the SP101s in a wide variety of configurations to appeal to a broad fan base, each with their own premium features. The most prominent feature on the SP101 has got to be their highly ergonomic grips and natural pointing abilities. Additionally, Ruger built these guys to be field-stripped in seconds, adding some much-appreciated user-friendliness. Overall, you can expect big things from these concealed carry revolvers, including solid steel sidewalls, a triple-locking cylinder, and a transfer-bar safety mechanism. If you decide to carry the SP101, there are only a few worthwhile options to consider. I happen to like the Bianchi Gun Leather 105 Minimalist because it offers decent concealability for the SP101’s big size.

Ruger LCR

The Ruger LCR series is probably their most popular for modern revolvers, and it’s easy to see why. These easy-to-conceal wheel guns are remarkably reliable and boast some pretty impressive ergonomics. In fact, LCRs are among the best-selling revolvers in America. This versatile collection includes some of the toughest handguns around, thanks to their aerospace-grade monolithic aluminum frames, patented friction-reducing cams, and heavily fluted steel cylinders. I highly recommend taking these Rugers to the next level by adding a Crimson Trace Lasergrip. This helps to ensure you have the best protection, day or night. Few holsters can compare to AlienGear, so do yourself a favor and pick up their Cloak Tuck IWB Holster for the LCR.

Ruger GP100

Think what you will about Ruger, but it’s silly to think that the GP100 isn’t one of the most ergonomic and versatile wheel guns on the market. The GP100 line of concealed carry revolvers represents Ruger’s special ability to modernize classic concealed carry revolvers. They offer these handguns in a pretty remarkable array of configurations and options, so there’s bound to be one that’s right for you. While most of these models are large and not ideal for use as a CCW, I’ve seen a few guys conceal some of their smaller models. The guy I knew who carried one of these used to carry with a Fobus standard paddle holster, and it seemed to be a solid choice.

Taurus Revolvers

Taurus Judge

Taurus Firearms is slowly but surely taking the firearms industry by storm with their ultra-affordable, dependable, and overall impressive handguns. I’ve been a fan of Taurus for a while now and I even used my Taurus Millennium G2 as my primary CCW for a few years. Nevertheless, the Judge Public Defender is an award-winning revolver worth considering for your EDC. These nifty little small frame concealed carry revolvers might just revolutionize the market for concealable wheel guns. Taurus integrated several high-strength materials, kept the intensely powerful firepower, and managed to shrink it down to a tiny pocket revolver. Lastly, do yourself a favor and check out the Pro Carry Belt Ride Ranch Series holster, it’s a pretty sweet way to carry the Public Defender.

Colt Revolvers

Colt Cobra

I was so excited to hear when Colt announced they were bringing back the iconic Cobra revolver. There are few wheel guns in this list which offer as much as a CCW quite like the Cobra. These .38 Special handguns are small, remarkably ergonomic, easy to shoot, and provide users with a sweet variety of premium features. In addition to their crazy comfortable grips, the Cobra also packs the excellent LL2 trigger system and is crafted from highly-durable steel. If you’re gonna carry the Colt revolver, there are few holsters better than the Crossbreed Snapslide OWB model. These affordable holsters are comfortable and provide users with an intuitive EDC setup that is worth every penny for your concealed carry revolvers.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, we can now see that revolvers are no longer a firearm of the past. There are plenty of excellent choices for people to arm themselves with for everyday carry. Between S&W, Ruger, Colt, and Taurus, there’s no reason to think wheel guns are making a comeback.

Before we begin to discuss the EAA Windicator (pronounced Vindicator), we must first acknowledge that the budget-friendly revolver is actually manufactured by Weihrauch, a German arms company, based in the small town of Mellrichstadt. Besides for the wheel gun, Weihrauch has a reputation for developing extremely reliable and durable air rifles and pistols. That being said, the Windicators are imported by EAA – European American Armory Inc – a Florida-based firearms company which imports handguns and long guns from Western Europe. EAA was founded with one goal in mind: To provide American firearms consumers with the best value in guns. In general, nearly all of their imports are considered affordable yet surprisingly high-quality, so my expectations for the Windicator were pretty high.

EAA Windicator 357

• Model: EAA Windicator Compact Revolver
• Caliber: .357 Magnum
• Capacity: 6 Rounds
• Action: Single Action / Double Action
• Barrel Length: 2”
• Overall Length: 7”
• Height: 5.5”
• Width: 1.5”
• Weight: 1.8 lbs. (30 oz.)
• Finish: Blued
• Sights: Fixed
• MSRP: $373

EAA Windicator Build

At first glance, the EAA Windicator already looks like it’s going to be a blast to shoot, even though there aren’t any standout features. Nevertheless, the most important thing to know about these guns is that they are the epitome of consistency, durability, and reliability. In terms of overall quality and affordability, few other revolvers can compete with the Windicator. There are obviously better looking, lighter, and smoother revolvers out there, but these are surprisingly impressive.

Full-Sized Nickel Windicator

Keep in mind that since these six shooters are the product of renowned German engineering, you can expect more than their price would indicate. In fact, if I had to pick two words to best describe it, I’d use “simple” and “effective”. Although there’s not a whole lot of variety in the collection, EAA does import the Windicator in two sizes (2” and 4” barrel), 2 calibers (.357 Magnum and .38 Special), and 2 finishes (nickel and blued).

EAA Windicator Performance

Although the Windicator is still relatively new to the American market, they have been used in Germany and throughout Europe for decades. Like any good revolver, these are powerful, yet maintain a decent control. Shooting .357 Magnum is no small thing, but the rubber grips do a pretty good job of boosting handling and overall ergonomics. Also, you can’t forget that these are surprisingly heavy, even the snub-nose models, so they’re not ideal as a CCW. Nonetheless, because they shoot well and can handle some abuse, they’re good for keeping in the car, garage, or what have you.

Snub-Nose EAA Blued Windicator

As you might have expected, the double action trigger on the Windicator is astonishingly heavy, yet the single action was surprisingly reasonable, weighing in at just over 5 pounds. That being said, I was significantly more comfortable with .38 than I was with .357.

EAA Windicator Grips

The default grips on the Windicator are pretty good but could definitely be softer. A revolver like this really needs a great grip system, so I recommend upgrading the rubber grips. Unfortunately, the EAA catalog only offers a wood alternative, which is gorgeous but is not gonna help your control. The biggest complaint people tend to have on these grips is that they’re too short so that your pinky hangs off. Unfortunately, I have yet to find any replacement grips that are custom made from a shop. Please feel free to let us know if you were able to find an upgrade, we’d love to see the available options.

EAA Windicator Holster

The most common holster for the EAA Windicator is the EAA-made Wraith Belt Holster. For under $50, this holster gets the job done, but it’s nothing fancy, to say the least. In terms of its overall quality, it’s just about average, probably due to the fact that it’s made by Galco. Fortunately, the folks over at AlienGear have you covered, as usual. They currently manufacture a few of their most popular models custom fit for the Windicator, including the outstanding Cloak Tuck Series.

Conclusion

Overall, the EAA Windicator is the budget gun you haven’t heard of that is worth considering. While it may not look spectacular or even offer great handling, it will get the job done every time. While these guns are hard to compare to more mainstream revolvers, the closest six shooters I can think of are Charter and Taurus, but they’re still noticeably distinct. Either way, the EAA revolver is a smart buy and is a gun that is certainly worth considering.

Welcome to the most revolutionary revolver in modern history. The unique Chiappa Rhino is as iconic as they come, especially considering its innovative and futuristic design. Nevertheless, the Rhino isn’t just a pretty face. The Italian masterpiece also boasts some pretty special versatility and overall performance capabilities. There’s so much to talk about so let’s just get down to business. Welcome to the Gunivore comprehensive review of the Chiappa Rhino Revolver Series.

Chiappa Rhino 40DS Build

The Chiappa Rhino is defined by its unconventional designs and specs, making it one of the most recognizable revolvers in the world. These extraordinary handguns were originally designed by the renowned Italian engineer, Emilio Ghisoni. His goal was to retain the durability classic revolvers were known for while making it more carry-friendly. In a stroke of genius, Ghisoni confidently built his revolver with the lightweight yet ultra-reliable 7075 aluminum alloy, effectively lowering its weight while also minimizing its perceived recoil.

Inner Workings of the Chiappa Rhino

Next, you’ll notice that the Rhino’s barrel is aligned with the lowermost chamber in the cylinder, unlike standard revolvers which line up with the uppermost. Besides for giving it an unusual appearance, this unique feature completely transforms the entire performance of the gun, but more on that later.

Similarly, the Rhino was crafted with a flat-sided cylinder profile and a hexagonal cylinder cross-section. While these may just seem like minor nuances, they significantly boost the Rhino’s adeptness as a concealed carry weapon. In fact, more and more people are turning to revolvers as their CCW and the Chiappa is stealing the show. Besides for the Rhino, I’ve also seen a rise in folks carrying the Colt Cobra, Charter Bulldog, and the Ruger LCR.

Unique Build of the Rhino

Chiappa took their innovation a step further with their inventive hammer design. The Rhino’s snag-resistant hammer is not a hammer at all, it’s actually more of a cocking device. In fact, the real hammer is concealed within the internal components because the gun fires from the bottom of the cylinder. As a result, single-action firing is only possible via this external cocking lever which triggers the actual internal hammer.

Lastly, the Rhino is unique among revolvers in that many models feature at least one accessory rail. This awesome addition allows users to attach all kinds of aftermarket accessories, including lights, lasers, and sights.

Chiappa Rhino Performance

The Chiappa Rhino was built to modernize the revolver, and oh boy did it work. The Italian handgun’s state-of-the-art technology and components combine to offer an insanely comfortable shooting experience that you must see to believe. The Rhino’s barrel placement effectively lowers its center of gravity which in turn, drastically reduces muzzle rise and perceived recoil.

Furthermore, the Rhino was crafted to have the bore more in line with the shooter’s arm, which offers a more natural point and shoot ability. These features combine with an extremely ergonomic design to provide shooters with faster follow-up shots and increased reliability.

Chiappa Rhino with Super Ghost Ultimate Competition Holster

Although the most Rhinos don’t feature a manual safety, most have a nifty cocked indicator to verify the internal hammer’s status. That being said, some models feature hammer blocks, cylinder rotation, and cylinder block safeties. Keep in mind that users can easily remove the Rhino’s side plate and remove the cocking lever to make it double-action only.

Lastly, I can’t stress enough how impressive the Rhino’s versatility is. Chiappa produces these handguns with a variety of sights, barrel sizes, and even calibers (.357 Magnum, 9mm, .40 S&W, and 9x21mm). As a result, don’t be surprised to see Rhinos being used in competitive shooting, 3-gun tournaments, recreational shooting, home-defense, and as an EDC gun. The Rhino is simply smooth as silk, both in looks and in its shooting abilities. Plus, it offers incredible handling and intuitive controls, what more could you ask for?

Chiappa Rhino Accessories

The Rhino actually has plenty of aftermarket options, unlike most other revolvers. First and foremost are moon clips. These nifty little guys basically act like magazines, allowing users to simply drop in 6 rounds and do super-fast reloads. Moon clips are like traditional speed loaders but offer faster and easier performance. Additionally, these clips retain the spent brass, making reloads and cleanups faster than ever.

Rhino users are also afforded the ability to swap their grips and sights, so look there are plenty of creative ways to personalize your revolver. Moreover, many Rhino owners take full advantage of the Picatinny rails and attach all kinds of accessories. I highly recommend the Sightmark ReadyFire LW-R5 Red Laser Pistol Sight or the Crimson Trace Rail Master Pro Red Laser/Light Combo if you’re looking for a serious tactical boost. If you’re in the market for sights and optics, you can’t go wrong with EOTech Holographic sights. I love their 512, 552, and EXPS3-4 models which are all seriously impressive. While they’ll cost you a pretty penny, they’re well worth the money.

Chiappa Rhino with Moon Clips

Conclusion

The Chiappa Rhino is simply something to behold. While revolvers are typically classic firearms by nature, this Italian-designed wheel gun is a modern marvel. Plus, with choices from 2″ to 6”-barrel lengths and sight options, the Rhino is truly as multipurpose as they come.

I was thrilled when Colt decided to re-release their classic Cobra revolver that I had to get my hands on it as soon as possible. In fact, the new and improved wheel gun features plenty of new updates that will make all .38 special fans want to get their hands on one too. It’s been six decades since Colt originally debuted the Cobra and I expect the reinvented model to be <g class="gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="7" data-gr-id="7">huge</g> hit. Let’s take a closer look and see what the fuss is all about.

Colt Cobra Standard model

Colt Cobra Specs

• Model: Colt Cobra
• Caliber: .38 Special +P
• Capacity: 6 Rounds
• Barrel Length: 2”
• Overall Length: 7.2”
• Weight: 25 oz. (unloaded)
• Height: 4.9”
• Trigger: Double Action
• Sights: Red Fiber Optic Front / Frame Trench Rear
• Frame: Stainless Steel Matte Finish
• MSRP: $699

Colt Cobra Build & Design

The first thing you’ll notice about the revamped Colt Cobra is that the legendary American gunmaker added a truly remarkable Hogue grip. If you aren’t already familiar with Hogue, these grips are one some of the best in the industry and do wonders for the Cobra’s handling and overall ergonomics. A powerful revolver like the .38 Special Cobra needs a solid, strong grip, and the Hogue delivers big time!

Colt Cobra Fiber Optic Sight

Additionally, Colt upgraded their traditional snub nose by engineering what they call the “Linear Leaf Mainspring”, which provides a completely improved trigger pull. To make the deal even sweeter, the revolver features a whole new level of versatility. Besides for giving it a +P capabilities, the six-shooter now features a fiber-optic front sight with the ability to switch to other impressive options like Tritium and night sights.

Cobra Performance & Shooting

The reimagined Colt Cobra is probably the standard by which all modern revolvers should be measured. After incorporating several game-changing updates and features, the classic snub nose is back and ready to exceed all expectations. In fact, the redesigned Cobra has already won several notable awards since its release in 2017.

Colt Cobra VZ Grips

Furthermore, many experts believe that the powerful wheel gun will bring revolvers back into the CCW market. It’s actually quite impressive how capable it functions as a concealed weapon considering its all-steel construction. Nevertheless, by reducing perceived recoil, giving it a 2” snub nose barrel, and incorporating a trustworthy double-action trigger, the new Colt is more than capable of becoming your next EDC gun.

Holsters for the Colt Cobra

I’ve recently become a huge fan of Crossbreed Holsters and they don’t disappoint when it comes to options for the Cobra. In fact, with nearly two dozen holsters to choose from, there is a Crossbreed for everyone. That being said, I really like the SnapSlide OWB Holster (3 material options) for an affordable $49. On the other hand, you can’t go wrong with a Galco holster, and their Tuck-N-Go Inside the Pant model is insanely affordable and plenty reliable.

Crossbreed Snapslide OWB Holster

Comparable Firearms

I like to compare the Colt to another redesigned classic revolver, the Charter Bulldog. This top-rated and highly-affordable .44 Special wheel gun was originally released in the early 70’s and is finally back in business. Although less expensive than the Colt, the Charter Bulldog is still nothing to laugh at. The American revolver manufacturer opted for single-piece frame to keep their premier gun simple and easy to maneuver. While some people find the Charter less apt for defense due to its meager 5-round capacity, its high-powered .44 Special chambering should put those worries to rest.

Charter Arms Bulldog

Conclusion

All things considered, there are few revolvers making headlines the way the Colt Cobra has been. This newly revamped wheel gun is truly worth considering adding to your collection, regardless of your shooting purpose. There’s nothing quite as nice as a redesigned classic and the Cobra is something special.

In this Gunivore breakdown, we're going to be looking at the powerful .44 special Charter Arms Bulldog revolver, a truly revamped American classic.

My father has recently been pressing me to recommend a new backup carry gun for him, and I’ve been struggling to find the right one. Because he’s my father, I only want the best for him, and that means I have to consider price, weight, reputation, reliability, concealability, and more. That being said, he’s been an adamant semi-auto shooter for as long as I can remember, so I was hesitant to suggest a wheel gun. Unfortunately, he was still undecided, even after reading my Top CCWs of 2017 piece. Considering that he already owns the impressive Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0 and Taurus 709, I think he was looking for something smaller to keep in his glove compartment or holstered on his ankle. Then I got thinking about the new and improved, totally revamped, Charter Arms Bulldog.

This highly-rated and recommended .44 Special revolver is as practical as they come and it won’t break the bank either. Unfortunately, Charter has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the years, so it will take some time for their reputation to catch up to where it truly belongs. The here today, gone tomorrow Charter Arms is a thing of the past; The New England firearm producer currently boasts a catalog filled with first-class, heavy-punching revolvers. For an in-depth breakdown of Douglas McClenahan’s resilient enterprise, check out my company overview here.

Originally released in 1973, the Bulldog quickly became Charter’s top-selling product and was even one of the best-selling revolvers in the country. However, while Charter was battling bankruptcy and struggling to manage their operations, the Bulldog fell victim to several manufacturing complications. After outlasting a couple of halts in production and receiving a few overhauls, the final version of the .44 Special was finally released ten years ago. As Charter’s trademark revolver, the Bulldog has seen its fair share of attention, but it hasn’t always been so positive. While it has been featured in movies like Killing Them Softly and Blade Runner, the Bulldog made news in the late 70’s after the notorious serial killer, the “Son of Sam”, utilized the weapon in his reign of terror in New York.

Enough chit-chat, let’s get down to business – This is the Gunivore rundown of Charter Arms’ Bulldog revolver!

Bulldog Build & Construction

Single Piece Bulldog Frame

Charter Arms’ feature snub nose firearm has endured the test of time as one of America’s best concealed carry revolvers, and for good reason. The immensely powerful handgun is built from 100% American-made components that are as durable as they are reliable. But before we get into the nitty-gritty, I must first say that the only complaint I’ve ever heard about the Bulldog was about its capacity. Although it only chambers five rounds, .44 Special rounds tend to be plenty strong when it matters most.

While the Bulldog may look like your standard snub nose revolver from afar, take a closer look and you’ll be surprised to see how special it really is. Charter Arms abandoned the traditional side plate and opted for a stronger single-piece frame. Furthermore, to boost their durability, these guns have their barrels threaded into their frames. Clearly, Charter was determined to create a CCW that could handle tons of abuse. In fact, they even ditched the conventional small retention screws for a more modern route –having the cylinder yoke secured into the strong steel frame. But with all of these extra durability-boosting features, you’d expect the Bulldog to feel like an S&W 500 Magnum. However, Charter’s engineering team has somehow managed to keep the Bulldog at a comfortable, easy-to-handle 20 ounces!

To keep it around 20 oz., Charter removed a few excess internal parts, hoping to keep their gun as simple as possible. As a result, Charters are not only significantly more dependable than more-traditional revolvers, they are also excellent for self-defense.

Although the Bulldog has no external safety mechanism, it is nonetheless regarded as one of the safest CCWs on the market. In order to eliminate the common safety issues of carrying a wheel gun, the solid-framed Charter contains the dependable hammer block transfer bar safety system. In fact, this now-ubiquitous feature was actually invented by Charter way back when.

https://gunivore.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/giphy-1.mp4

Charter Arms Bulldog Performance

By its build alone, you can already see that the Bulldog is no ordinary revolver. The purpose of the Bulldog was to offer big performance in a small, compact frame, and Charter knocked it outta the park. The big bore .44 Special handgun may be one of the heaviest hitting out there, but you’d be shocked to see how easily it handles. Although its solid build and great grip definitely provide some much-needed control, I’d like to see Charter give them ported barrels or something.

Also Similar to the S&W Model 69 Combat

When considering a Bulldog, you have to keep in mind that you won’t be hitting bullseyes from 50 yards out. Because the American company designed these as self-defense weapons, they are most accurate within a 20-yard range. Nevertheless, these double-actions are definitely more accurate than the comparable guns the market has to offer, like the Taurus Model 445 or S&W Model 29. To achieve this “superior” accuracy, Charter made a few modifications to their trigger, including widening it and easing its pull.

In true Charter genius, the New England weapons manufacturer made a few small adjustments to their barrels which resulted in huge improvements in their accuracy and overall performance. Their brilliance was to add more rifling to their barrels, opting for 8 grooves instead of the usual 6. As a result, Charters can fire their trademark heavy rounds straighter, faster, and more accurately.

Most people don’t think of .44 Specials as versatile handguns, but the Bulldog, once again, is not your average revolver. The Charter can handle a wide variety of ammo, but be careful what you choose, and take into account what kind of shooting you’ll be doing. For example, I’d go for something like Federal Champion 200-grain hollow-points for self-defense but upgrade to Winchester Cowboy Ammo 240-grain for hunting.

Because these are snub nose revolvers, there aren’t so many aftermarket options. Nevertheless, I recommend investing in a good holster, especially considering that these were made to be CCWs. When it comes to holsters, you can’t go wrong with Desantis, and they’ve specially crafted their Thumb Break Scabbard just for Charter. On the other hand, since my father was looking to holster his new gun on his ankle, I suggest checking out the Galco Ankle Glove holster.

Your only other serious option to consider is switching grips, although the default set is pretty great already. If you do decide to change things up, Charter offers a beautiful rosewood grip in addition to the classic Bulldog style wood grip which provides a more refined and traditional look. But get them quickly because they’re running out fast!

Charter Arms Boomer

Charter recently debuted a compact version of their famous .44 Bulldog, called the Boomer, and it’s a hit. These sleek and sexy variants have all the features Bulldog owners love plus more, all condensed into a smaller, more compact build. The biggest modification Charter gave these powerful revolvers was ported and tapered barrels which effectively minimizes their recoil and maximizes their draw speed.

Vs. Smith & Wesson Model 629

Considering how uncommon .44 Special is nowadays, there really isn’t much that can compete with the Bulldog. The best alternative I can think of is the Smith and Wesson Model 629. Although it is generally listed as a .44 Magnum revolver, it is more than capable of firing the softer .44 Special rounds. These stainless steel S&Ws offer a bit more versatility, plus they have the legendary reputation backing them up. However, these added benefits will put you back more than twice the cost of a Charter – the question remains whether these extra features and abilities are worth it.

Take one look at Charter Arms and you wouldn’t believe the road they’ve had to take to get to where they are now. At the end of the day, Charter has been in good company, and that’s what has kept them enduring. The fact that the American revolver producer is headquartered in the New England Gun Valley has surely helped them stay on their feet. Like Silicon Valley for high-tech and the Brescia Province for Italian firearms (see Beretta, Franchi), this region is home to some of the world’s top weapons manufacturers. In addition to Charter Arms, the New England Gun Valley is also home to Colt, Marlin, Mossberg, Ruger, Stag, Smith & Wesson, Savage, Kahr, Heckler & Koch, and Sig Sauer.

In today’s Gunivore Company Overview, we’re going to be putting Charter Arms under the microscope to find out more about this underappreciated gunmaker and their collection of fine American revolvers.

Charter Arms History

Although Charter Arms has recently seen a boom in business, it wasn’t always this way. In fact, they’ve had to face one hell of a rocky road ever since Douglas McClenahan founded the company in 1965 – I’m actually shocked to see how they’ve managed to stay in business. Nonetheless, the facts all pointed towards their success from the beginning, especially considering McClenahan already had years of experience with Colt and Ruger under his belt.

The young weapons designer had big hopes of developing his own line of strong-bodied revolvers but with one-piece-frames. By avoiding side plates, Charter’s revolvers would not only be more durable, but they’d also be able to shoot higher loads more reliably. Furthermore, McClenahan went on to innovate a new safety system that has been nearly universally replicated throughout the industry.

After a few years of initial success, Charter suffered their first bankruptcy until they were eventually bailed out by McClenahan’s long-time friend and colleague, David Ecker. This new partnership enabled Charter to continue right where they left off and saw many new improvements including upgraded barrels and sights. Then, after initially producing revolvers chambered in a variety of calibers, including .32 Long, .327 Magnum, and .357 Magnum, Charter Arms began focusing their attention on .38 & .44 Special. Unfortunately, even with the newfound alliance with Ecker, McClenahan couldn’t keep Charter from going bankrupt again, this time in 2005.

Shortly afterward, the New England firearms manufacturer employed MKS Supply to handle their sales, marketing, and distribution, which would ultimately give them the boost they needed to thrive. This relatively young company has made it their mission to represent up-and-coming weapons producers and to be their number one asset. Since their inception nearly twenty years ago, some of their notable clients have included Hi-Point Firearms and Inland Manufacturing. However, Charter cut ties with MKS in 2010 and finally took over their own financial responsibilities.

Now, let’s take a closer look at Charter Arms’ lineup of high-powered revolvers to see exactly how impressive they really are.

Charter Arms Products Overview

Charter Arms Off Duty

Owners of Charter revolvers are proud of their guns because they’re not only remarkably built, but they’re also 100% American-made. With the experience of founder Doug McClenahan paired with Ecker’s ingenuity, Charter has manufactured some of the most durable and reliable revolvers on the market. By adopting the one-piece frame design, these wheel guns are lighter, simpler, and stronger than the revolvers of the past. Plus, fewer parts means these guns are easier to strip, clean, and operate.

With maybe their biggest improvement yet, Charter Arms perfected their accuracy and overall performance by making a few small tweaks to their barrels. While most modern handguns feature no more than six grooves, Charters are built with eight, making them fire straighter, faster, and more accurately. More importantly, Charter is responsible for developing the hammer block transfer bar safety system which has been adopted across the industry. This added safety feature practically eliminated all of the issues commonly associated with carrying a wheel gun. Now, with a completely blocked hammer, most revolvers won’t fire unless their trigger is completely pulled.

Although Charter Arms got their start with the ever-popular Undercover, it’s the Bulldog that has become their trademark firearm. Initially released in 1973, the Bulldog quickly became one of the best-selling guns in the United States. After a few hiccups in production, their newest model was finally re-released in 2007 with all-new features and has seen similar sales figures compared to the original. More recently, Charter debuted a compact version of their .44 Bulldog, called the Boomer. Featuring top of the line grips, these powerful handguns have ported and tapered barrels to minimize recoil and maximize draw speed.

Meanwhile, their pioneer revolver, the Undercover, has maintained its popularity as one of the most trusted CCWs in the market. The lightweight snub nose was ahead of its time when it was released way back when, and is still considered an advanced firearm. For folks in search of an ultra-concealable revolver without having to sacrifice power, look no further than the Undercover.

Charter Arms Chic Lady

While the Undercover was already a huge hit, the New England weapons developer took it a step further when they released the Undercover Lite. These super lightweight .38 Specials saw even more success once Charter began releasing them in a variety of colors and finishes. Their most famous model is the Chic Lady, with its pink anodized frame, hi-polished parts, and all. But fear not, while these revolvers may be lighter, they are still extremely durable.

Next up in Charter Arms’ collection, we’ve got the Pathfinder, available in the cheaper and more user-friendly .22 LR (and .22 Magnum). While equally as intimidating as its more powerful cousins, the Pathfinder revolver is a great gun for newcomers, ideal for all kinds of plinking and target practice.

In addition to their assortment of revolvers, Charter recently acquired the rights to the incredible Blacknitride process which gave their weapons a serious boost in durability. By strengthening the metal components by up to ten times, the Blacknitride finish will keep your Charter looking spick and span for years to come.

Conclusion

Regardless whether or not you’re a fan of Charter Arms’ lineup of heavy-duty revolvers, you can’t help but admire their perseverance. After repeated failures and bankruptcies, Douglas McClenahan persisted, continuously pushing the bar to produce top-shelf revolvers. His commitment to innovation, safety, and power has never faltered in his 50+ years of business. Stay tuned for more reviews on Charter Arms, as we go in-depth into some of their most popular firearms.
