Pinty Red Dot Optics Review

Most people who are in the market for a red dot scope know they might have to lay out some cash but there are plenty of folks who want the best red dot sight for the money. At the end of the day, the Pinty sight might seem like a cheap red dot sight simply because of its price, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of performing.

After unboxing my red dot I took a cursory glance at my new Pro Series 1x30mm Red Dot Sight and I was slightly perplexed. The sight certainly felt like it was made to be budget-friendly but it did have some nice features and controls that made it easy and pleasurable to operate. I hooked it up to my Anderson Manufacturing AM-15 Optic Ready rifle and hit the range.

The first magazine wasn’t anything to write home about but things changed when I got used to the device. I specifically wanted to pair the AM15 with this red dot because both are known for being budget-friendly. Truthfully, I really had little to complain about with the Pinty sight and I had low expectations going in. That being said, this is definitely a sub-$100 red dot sight and will have trouble competing with brands like Vortex, Leupold, Nightforce, Nikon, Burris, AimPoint and Bushnell that never go out of style. In reality, there are the best sights and optics but then there are companies that offer solid options for affordable prices.

Like I said, I didn’t really have any real issues with the Pinty but I believe it serves a specific purpose, namely providing shooters with a functional and affordable variant to the expensive industry leaders. In fact, I actually think the Pinty red dot sight is a fantastic option for new shooters but can also be a great option as an airsoft red dot sight for people into that stuff. It would even do well on air rifles that people are buying left and right these days.

I also wanted to see how it would handle tactical situations so I took it out in the rain and did some home defense drills just to see how it really handles some challenge. For starters, I really like how it sat on my rifles’ Picatinny rails and it made maintaining a solid sight picture on the move pretty easy. I cleared all the rooms in my house in a variety of lighting and moving speeds and the Pinty didn’t disappoint. Obviously, it couldn’t perform as well as some of my other optics, but it performed better than expected and proved to be a valuable piece of equipment. Now, I wouldn’t shoot competitively with it, but I don’t think they would’ve expected otherwise.

Then there is the durability of the red dot and this is where I was most concerned. The foreign manufacturing and low price tag led me to believe that durability was an issue but I was surprised. The Pro Series Red Dot is surprisingly well-built but I’d still be a bit careful with it. They built it with a strong aluminum housing that handled the rain pretty well and had a pretty decent shock-resistant construction. As an added bonus, the sight seemed to be decently fog proof which is good for round the year shooting.

How To Pick A Holster for Sig P365

While Sig Sauer proudly manufactures the “#1 selling handgun in America”, the P365 comes in a variety of shapes and features. Although the original was a micro-compact model designed for EDC, there are currently 4 models each rather impressive and different.

The first thing to consider is where you want to carry your firearm. Between ankles, shoulders, appendix, and more, there are many places to conceal carry a P365. On the other hand, there are also great options for open carrying with outside the waistband holsters.

The next factor to consider is the material. Some folks like modern polymers like Kydex while others prefer a more traditional leather holster. Then there are folks who stick to a simple nylon holster, especially for pocket carrying. Either way, there are great options out there for this firearm – It’s up to you to pick the right one for your specific needs.

Most Comfortable Sig P365 Holster

I must admit that I am a huge fan of AlienGear Holsters and their new ShapeShift Appendix Carry Holster is simply fantastic. This is remarkably well-designed to offer top-notch comfort, concealability, and tactical advantage. This holster is custom-moulded to fit the P365 so it sits tight but draws smoothly. Additionally, they included a “CoolVent” neoprene back layer to keep sweat and moisture out while providing sufficient padding. Like most other AlienGear holsters, these have fully adjustable passive retention so users can get a custom-feel with their holster. I hate to say it, but I’m a total AlienGear Fanboy.

Best Sig P365 IWB Holster

For my Sig P365, I purchased a few holsters over time. I wanted to see which material worked and felt the best for IWB appendix carry. First I bought a kydex. It took awhile to find what I wanted because I’m picky. When you carry IWB, the entire pistol is compressed between your body and whatever pants you’re wearing. I wanted a holster that would keep the magazine release button from being compressed and pushed. The last thing I need is to draw the pistol only to have the magazine fall out of the gun. After some research I found Clinger Kydex holsters.

I like their product and I think I would carry with it every day theoretically. The pistol clicks into place and sure enough, the magazine release button is covered and secured. That’s a good feeling. Kydex is thin too, so it doesn’t add much to the waistline. The only thing I don’t care for is that there is no “give” with kydex. When you bend at the waist, kydex is solid, and that can be uncomfortable.

Next, I thought I would try a leather holster. Based solely on their great reviews, I bought a Jeffrey Custom Leather made for the P365. Before I gave them my credit card numbers, I emailed them asking if they could custom build a holster that would cover and secure the magazine release (I’m big on this point) and they gave me a very good explanation as to why they couldn’t do it. They said leather has too much flex and it would likely compress the button at all times especially during IWB carry.

Fair enough. I bought it anyway.

I do like the holster and it’s well-made. The sewing is top-notch as are the ends. The belt clip is secure and it’s a very well made holster overall. It’s smaller overall than the kydex although the walls of the leather are thicker. The price tag certainly made sense after I carried with it for awhile. It carries quite comfortably and was gorgeous. No real complaints on my part.

Next I thought I’d see what kind of nylon holsters were available.  I have always been reluctant to buy a nylon holster because they aren’t usually fitted for specific guns. Well, I wanted one that was pistol specific. So, with that in mind, I called Craft Holsters which handles the Falco brand. Craft assured me that the Falco is “formed for the P365”. So, I thought I would try it out. Falco holsters are made in Slovenia. No big deal to me. Well I made the mistake of opting for the cheapest shipping method. Holy crap, it took a solid month from the email notification of the shipping date until it showed up in my mailbox.

The cardboard box was unscathed as was the holster so I can’t really complain too much but man was that a long time to wait. The holster is well made as far as nylon goes. The sewing is well done with no frayed ends. The clip is solid, secured in place using a nicely cut piece of leather. I must say though that this holster is not formed in any way to fit the 365. There are no contours for the trigger guard. No real contours at all for that matter. It’s just cut so that the pistol fits into it.

As to which one I favor? Right now I tend to carry using the kydex. You really can’t beat the safety and security of the pistol clicking into place. Also, I don’t have to worry at all about scratches and marks on it. In fact, I could truly care less about the abuse factor because I know the kydex is tough enough to take it. All that being said, I’m going to give all three holsters a fair chance especially this coming summer. Like anybody else, I tend to wear shorts and t-shirt in the summer so I will see how they compare then.

Best Sig P365 Holster OWB Holster

Because OWB holsters are typically more comfortable than IWB, many people consider appearance to be more important than comfort. Nevertheless, functionality is still key with these holsters so it’s all about finding that sweet spot.

As you know by now, I’m a big fan of AlienGear, so I think it’s worth considering their Cloak Side OWB holster. While it may look simple, the hybrid holster is actually noticeably comfortable to carry and utilizes a leather back with a polymer plastic custom-molded cover. I like that it provides a slim profile with excellent drawing but I will admit that it’s not the prettiest on the block.

For those looking for a nice leather holster then you gotta check out Mitch Rosen and their stunning collection of holsters. A lot of folks like the leather OWB holsters from Crossbreed but I just don’t love their leather holsters. However, they do have a nice hybrid holster called the SnapSlide that is comfortable, affordable, looks okay, and does fit the P365 well.

While many people choose OWB holsters to open carry, plenty of shooters prefer these even for concealed carrying. That being the case, it’s not easy to conceal an OWB firearm but the Bravo Concealment P365 OWB holsters does a good job. It’s got a slim profile with options for paddle attachments and pancake style loops. These are average quality holsters but they’re affordable and get the job done.

Lastly, for those willing to go outside the box a little bit, there is the CYTAC OWB holster custom-molded for the 365. This is a more distinct looking holster but it’s super comfortable and has great features. For instance, they have a built-in locking mechanism that won’t unlock the weapon until the release is pressed while drawing. Additionally, the fully-adjustable design offers 360-degree cant rotation and works with or without a belt. Not to mention it’s made with an advanced polymer that’s lightweight, highly durable, and water-resistant.

Best Sig P365 Pocket Holster

There aren’t a tremendous amount of pocket holsters available for the P365 but the Desantis Nemesis is one of the best. Like many pocket holsters, this is nylon-heavy which keeps the price down. However, it doesn’t feel as cheap as it looks thanks to a rubberized exterior and leather construction. The best thing about the Nemesis is that it can be carried in confidence since it barely moves out of position. As a nice added touch, the simple design breaks up the outline of the firearm for added conceivability.

You can also go for something a bit different and check out the Talon Concealed Carry Cargo Pocket Leather Holster which is ideal for rear pocket carrying. Wallet holsters aren’t so popular but they certainly can be useful in the right situation. I liked the Talon high-quality leather material and no imprint design. It wasn’t easy to draw but it was good for comfortably carrying throughout the day.

For something a bit more polarizing, consider the Black Scorpion Ambidextrous pocket holster. This neoprene synthetic holster can be yours for under $10 but it’s better than you’d expect. It sits comfortably in your pocket and actually has a great draw. The soft lightweight material makes it easy to pull out the firearm while an anti-slip band works well to keep the holster in place. This holster obviously isn’t for everyone, but it’s a great affordable option that works well with the P365.

Best Sig P365 XL Holster

The Sig Sauer P365 XL has a slightly larger grip module than the standard model but it’s still a solid EDC firearm. I think Sig made this variant simply because the P365 was almost too small for many concealed carry shooters. In practice, it does have new features, but it’s basically just a bigger version of the original model. Assuming you don’t take advantage of the added accessory options, there are several excellent holsters to choose from.

Let’s start with the BlackPoint Tactical Mini Wing IWB holster. This simple yet elegant design is extremely comfortable and is particularly useful for people who live in warmer climates. It conceals super well and can be adjusted for a perfect fit. Its composite material is lightweight but plenty durable. This is definitely a top choice for carrying the XL.

However, I also liked the IWB option offered by Raven Concealment Systems. This is one of the most minimal holsters I’d ever recommend but it’s surprisingly good. The Vanguard 2 Trigger Guard Holster is tiny yet offers more than enough for responsible and comfortable everyday carry. The tuckable holster is fully adjustable for cant and ride-height plus is totally ambidextrous. Because the XL is bigger than the standard P365, I think a minimalist holster is wise decision to consider.

Other holsters to consider include the Concealment Express IWB Kydex and the Mitch Rosen OWB Leather Holsters.

Best 365 Holster Overall

Call me a sucker but I think AlienGear has the best holster options for your Sig Sauer P365. Whether you want IWB, OWB, ankle, shoulder, car, or what have you, AlienGear has you covered. I am a big fan of their ShapeShift Appendix Carry Holster for the P365 because I think it checks all the boxes. It’s affordable, comfortable, modular, concealable, durable, looks alright, and performs great. While they don’t have any full leather holsters, kydex is a great material for EDC.

Since the early 1980’s, Glock has been spearheading the polymer gun business. In the late 90’s, gangsta rappers in L.A. were singing about “Austrian firearms that’s made out of plastic”. And in the 2010’s, Taran Tactical came out with an assortment of products specifically designed for Glock pistols. They are not the first ones to come out with Glock upgrades, but their wares are getting a lot of buzz and a lot of business. It seems that the hype is not for naught.

Taran Tactical Innovations

Taran Tactical, aka Taran Tactical Innovations (TTI), has been around for under a decade. But in that time it has managed to establish itself as a real asset – not only to the firearms industry, but to the film and television industry as well.

The company was founded by Taran Butler, a California-born shooter and world champion, who has managed to rack up a significant number of titles and first-place trophies in the course of his ongoing career. He is considered by many to be the most versatile competitive shooter in the world today. He has trained producers, directors, and actors for gun movies including James Cameron, Michael Mann, Jennifer Garner, Colin Farrell, Halle Berry, Chris Hemsworth, and John Wick (aka Keanu Reeves).

Taran Tactical offers complete TTI-tweaked rifles, guns, and shotguns, plus there are parts and accessories for a wide variety of firearms, and some gear and swag. TTI’s connection to Glock is one which has brought it much fame, fortune, and glory – especially in the competition circuit – so in this post we’re going to explore several of those Glock models in-depth and more.

Aside from Glock, there are other enhancements and upgrades which the professionals at TTI are willing to provide for guns, shotguns, and rifles. If you are a pro competition shooter, TTI is definitely something to consider. If you’re an occasional shooter, it’s still a very badass setup. Plus, with TTI’s expertise and knowhow, you will invariably see returns on this investment. It then becomes more of a question of price, which is a highly subjective thing. Having the means and ability to purchase something does not automatically encompass or entail the ability to afford it.

Taran Tactical Glock 43 

When Glock released its single-stack 9mm G43 in 2015, there were those who said it was late to the party. With so many other companies already covering that themselves, there seemed to be no immediate need for a Glock version. But, as it turns out, those guys who were criticizing Glock were not speaking for everyone. Same as before, the market spoke for itself.

Despite the fact that other manufacturers had indeed introduced their own versions of a single-stack polymer-based 9mm pistol long ago, civilians and law-enforcement alike were asking for Glock to make it happen. And they did.

Taran Tactical Glock 19

The Glock 19 compact 9mm pistol was released in 1988, a few years after the introduction of their first model, the G17. The idea of a compact follow-up to the full-size pistol was a given, since there were many who were enamored with the G17, and wished to see a smaller version. I mean, if it is designated as a backup weapon, you’d want it to be no less accurate or actionable than your primary carry. Just because it’s smaller or tucked somewhere less convenient, there is no real reason for it to be any less deadly and ready for quick and effective engagement.

Taran Tactical Glock 34

Glock’s extended slide pistols have been around for awhile, and the G34 seems to be a friendlier version of the 17L competition model. I haven’t actually shot the 17L, but I recall my fellow Gunivore Nate was disappointed with its performance. I know that around the world it was received with fanfare and some good feedback to back it up. The G34 which Taran Tactical put out is a real Bad Boy; and you know I mean it, because I never write “Bad Boy” about anything…

Glock 34 Gen 5 Carry Optics Combat Master is a sexy gun. It really is. I mean, forget just for a second about anything having to do with accuracy, functionality, versatility – it is a good-looking piece of hardware. Available with Trijicon or Leupold sights, slide cuts, trigger job, oversized release button, and other performance-enhancing goodies by TTI. Functionality-wise, it’s as practical as it gets, not just bells and whistles.

Whether you do it for the win, the rush, the feels, the camaraderie – competitions are fun events. I think you can develop a long and satisfying relationship with a pistol like Taran’s G34 unit. Everything about it is meant to take your skills further and bring your game up a notch. You may win or lose the competition, but Taran’s improvements will make it a splendiferous outcome either way!

This sucker is expensive at MSRP $3,199, but I’ll be damned if it’s not what I want for Christmas…

Taran Tactical 2011 Combat Master

The Taran Tactical 2011 also know as the TTI Combat Master or John Wick gun, is the epitome of custom gunsmithing tech brought to the consumer market. Compared to a 1911, shooting the 2011 combat master is like switching from an old Buick to a race car. It’s super accurate and a real pleasure to shoot. The feel is premium, to say the least, and has remarkably smooth operation and control.

Keep in mind that this comes pre-equipped with less than a 2 pound trigger, which is insane. This is why competition shooters like Max Michel shoot guns like these to win international tournaments. And for those that are really into mixing things up, this gun also fires 9mm major, which is a beefed up 9mm that does way more damage. Overall, this will probably be one of the best pistols you’ll ever shoot, in my opinion. It’s really that good.

Taran Tactical Scandal

The shooting community has long joked about or admired that Butler surrounds himself with gorgeous women but things aren’t so funny anymore. A video recently surfaced with Taran behind the scenes with one of his female shooters and he seemingly was coercing her into taking off her clothes. Now I’ll leave it to that because we obviously don’t know the context and no formal allegations have been made to my knowledge. All this video did was make people question Butler and his moral compass. There’s nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with beautiful women, even if it’s for marketing purposes. But crossing that line into subjugation, coercion, or even abuse is just not acceptable. In the meantime, I don’t think people should boycott Taran Tactical because we simply don’t know the whole story. In general, he is actually a well-liked guy and for people to react without any legitimate proof is unjust. It’s obviously a complicated issue but for right now, it’s just rumors.

Conclusion

The fires of the fall of 2019, which raged in California, took their toll on TTI’s compound and range. Thankfully, no-one was physically harmed or otherwise injured, and Butler and Co were able to bounce back quickly. Their gun parts and accessories are as good as ever, and even those who may go with a different manufacturer or gunsmith will concede that TTI know what they’re doing. It’s a matter of personal taste, plus experiences of trial and error.

TTI’s equipment is solid and highly reliable, whether in competition or outside of it. Purchasing equipment and gear from TTI won’t immediately turn you into Taran Butler, but it can turn you into a more professional shooter if you want it too. Of course, you could invest the money and just let the gun rust and collect dust. The gun does not make the man, to turn the popular phrase.

And speaking of being a man: say what you want about Butler himself, or about his affinity for hiring young women as models/actresses/shooters for Team TTI — it has no bearing on the end product itself. Forget the hype, forget John Wick and his ‘gun fu’, and forget the La La Land glitter. Butler knows firearms, and he keeps on proving that. You don’t become a USPSA Grand Master without knowing your stuff.

Come hell, high water, or – evidently – wildfires, TTI keeps on trucking. The U.S. gets a lot of flack for its policies on guns and gun control (or, some would say, the blatant lack of it). Regardless of competitions, I am of the opinion that the thing to stop a bad guy with a gun is – more often than not – a good guy with a gun.

SureFire began with a dream and a belief in the future of laser technology. Dr. John Matthews took his engineering expertise and decided to open the Newport Corporation to begin developing lasers for industrial applications. It wasn’t long before Matthews and his team became a leading name in laser tech, earning major contracts, patents, and business deals. 

However, the ph.D. engineer was an avid shooter and eventually considered applying his knowledge of lasers to his love of firearms. In 1979, Dr. Matthews patented his first laser sight, marking a new era of firearm technology. This period continued with Laser Products developing laser and light sights for law enforcement primarily while practically remaining off the commercial market. 

Fast forward a few years and the SureFire Weaponlight was created for law enforcement and military applications. The success of their first weapon light propelled them into the commercial market and convinced them to change their name to SureFire LLC. Today we’re going to take a closer look at some of the best and most popular SureFire products out there.

SureFire Weapon Light Collection

The weaponlight is what made SureFire into the company that it is today thanks to their remarkable durability and performance. Nowadays, they manufacture a wide range of weaponlights, including those for handguns, rifles, SMGs, shotguns, and heavy guns. Weaponlights are mounted flashlights used for tactical operation that allow shooters to aim their firearm, illuminate the target, and still have two hands to operate their gun.

Note that many shooters like the new MasterFire weaponlight holsters because it fits practically any pistol format, even those with suppressors. 

SureFire X300 Series

The SureFire X300U is truly a fantastic weaponlight even for those who aren’t gung-ho about attaching lights to their pistols. For starters, they did a great job in making sure that it was versatile enough to work with most modern pistols. They integrated a simple T-slot mounting system that fits most Picatinny and universal rails. The X300 is compact but packs a big punch too with its 1,000 lumens LED light. For an even better upgrade check out the X300U-A, the enhanced version of the SureFire X300 Ultra. The TIR lens offers a far-reaching, high-intensity beam with a large center spot for excellent tactical use. SureFire XC1 WeaponLight

In fact, SureFire added a special MaxVision Beam to the XC1-B for even better close-range applications as this light is optimized for human vision. The small but durable body also utilizes hard anodized aerospace aluminum with a Mil-Spec finish for improved strength. Additionally, the XC1 is equipped with ambidextrous controls, improved constant-on activation, and a gasket sealed weatherproof design. I don’t love weaponlights on pistols, but I own an XC1 because I believe it will get the job done should I ever need it.

SureFire Scout Light Pro Series

The new Scout Light Pro series is the highlight of SureFire’s rifle weaponlight catalog. The Scout Light Pro is the next generation in the Scout Light Series so you can expect it to be a compact, modular, low profile, lightweight, highly-durable, long gun weaponlight system. The Scout Light Series has proven itself quite well among civilians, military, and law enforcement, so there were plenty of eyes watching out for this release.

SureFire M300 Compact Scout Light

As part of the original Scout Light Series, the M300 features a tough as nails aerospace aluminum body that’s Mil-Spec hard anodized to handle just about anything. The weatherproof system also has the classic SureFire LED TIR lens for enhanced lighting with two switch options. The M300 is part of the standard line within the Scout Light Series, meaning that it’s designed for close to mid range. So while it may not be as bright or powerful as other models, the M300 was made to be compact with as little deviation from the expected performance of a SureFire weaponlight. 

I hooked up the M300C to my Kriss Vector and ran a few drills in low light to see how effective it was and I wasn’t the least bit disappointed. I felt that the controls were intuitive and unobtrusive while offering sufficient light. I went ahead and ran the drill again this time at night in the rain. Honestly, I’d feel bad for anyone who tried to trespass on my property because I felt that I had every tactical advantage on my side with this setup. I don’t usually keep a weaponlight attached to my firearms, but I always keep them available and I think it’s a responsible decision for all gun owners to consider.

SureFire Flashlight Collection

SureFire has established themselves as a leading name in flashlight technology, in a variety of niches from firefighting to firearms. It should come to no surprise that the California-based company has a diverse collection of flashlights for a variety of purposes, most of which are backed by terrific reviews.

SureFire Stiletto Pro

I remember when the original Stiletto came out and I thought it was cool but it definitely had some room for improvement. I remember not willing to dish out over $100 for a pocket flashlight but then I saw the Stiletto Pro and its $229 price tag. I got my hands on the new model and spent a few days with it. 

I liked the flat but rugged design of the new Stiletto and it was easy to draw from my work clothes. I tested the durability in some non-traditional ways but it proved to maintain the high standard of toughness SureFire is famous for. Like many other mini SureFire lights, the Stiletto was built with the small but powerful MaxVision Beam reflector. The flashlight has a customizable control system but I wasn’t interested in getting frustrated with programming it. At the end of the day, the Stiletto Pro was reliable, durable, and easy-to-use. Nevertheless, I have trouble recommending it for the simple fact that it’s $229.

SureFire 6P

The SureFire 6PX Tactical flashlight is standard but definitely not basic. The unassuming flashlight is a single-output LED light (double-output model also available) that shines mighty bright out of its aerospace aluminum body. While they call it tactical, I’m not sure it fits the bill more so than their “non-tactical” models. However, the light on this is excellent and the build is strong as hell. No gimmicks here, just a straight-up flashlight that won’t let you down. I’ll take one.

SureFire G2X Series

There are four flashlights in the G2X Series but I really like the G2X Pro Dual Output model. The G2X models share practically indestructible LED emitters, 600 lumens of max output, precision reflectors, and Nitrolon polymer construction. The differences are primarily in the output (single or double) with some minimal configuration variations. 

At $70, the G2X Pro flashlight has a lightweight dual-output setup with a nice ergonomic durable build for use in a variety of scenarios. I like this flashlight because it’s not too simple but not too sophisticated. There’s high and low power options plus its lightweight design make it versatile for EDC, outdoor, emergency, or tactical usages.

SureFire Suppressor Collection

While SureFire is primarily known for their weaponlights and flashlights, they also have a nice selection of muzzle devices. When it comes to SureFire suppressors, you gotta talk about the SOCOM Series. These suppressors, originally released in 2012, were chosen by the U.S. Special Operations Command. This may have been the most extensive suppressor competition in history and it was won by a flashlight company. 

In order to win the contract, these suppressors had to remain durable for extended periods of time, show effective reduction in sound attenuation, flash, and dust signature, and more. After winning this competition, the SureFire SOCOM suppressor was sold to domestic law enforcement and military agencies and NATO allies around the world. Since then, production became cheaper and precision got higher. Eventually, the SOCOM2 suppressors were released with stronger alloys and a redesigned internal venting system. I could talk about my experience with the SOCOM1 but I think the fact that it was selected by U.S. Spec. Operations Command says enough. The only potential downside is that the SOCOM 2 suppressors are only available in 5.56, 7.62, and .338.

SureFire Muzzle Brake Collection

For those firearm owners who want a muzzle attachment but something a little less than a suppressor, SureFire has excellent muzzle brakes. These attachments are all made from precision stainless steel and high-end coating for long-term superior performance. They are also threaded to fit many popular rifles. 

SureFire Warden Blast Regulator

The SureFire Warden Blast Regulator is part muzzle brake part suppressor so it’s really something to see. I’ll start by saying that I’m not a huge fan of it since I’m not convinced it’s so useful for most shooters. I like that it offers a somewhat suppressor-style shooting experience without all of the limitations or cost.

On the other hand, it is just a more advanced muzzle brake pretending to be more. Unlike regular muzzle brakes, the Warden transfers all of the gas forwards to reduce some of the overpressure and dust signature when shooting prone. The other thing I don’t like about it is that it’s not self-contained in the sense that it only functions when placed on top of a SureFire SOCOM muzzle device with the Fast-Attach system. Is it cool? Yes. Would I ever buy it? No. 

SureFire Warcomp Flash Hider

The Warcomp flash hiders were built in line with the SOCOM series that supposedly provides over 99% muzzle flash reduction (compared to a plain muzzle) while virtually eliminating muzzle rise. Now I have trouble believing that but I would call it more of an exaggeration than a lie. These are definitely above average flash hiders with excellent materials and designs that do perform quite well. SureFire currently offers a variety of Warcomp flash hiders, including models fit for 5.56, 7.62, and .260 Caliber / 6mm & 6.5mm.

1. Grip/Plug Insert

The first accessory is a fairly inexpensive item by the name of a grip plug/insert. In the back strap of your Glock, right next to the magazine well, is a cavity which some choose to plug. While there is some debate over whether or not you should plug up that cavity to begin with, the grip plug is a very popular accessory which can help your grip, give you more control, and as I understand it, there are shooters out there who have put that plug to very good use.

2. Slide Stop Lever

Next on our list is an accessory that is all about convenience and speed: the slide stop lever. This is another item which is not at all expensive, and it can really make a difference, especially for newer, less-seasoned shooters, and also for times when the gun isn’t quite broken in. Many shooters don’t like the feel of the flat slide release, and putting in something which is just slightly more accessible can be a huge advantage when operating the firearm. The lever doesn’t do much “damage” as far as the aesthetics of the weapon. It is still the same old Glock, but when your finger goes for that slide stop after a magazine change, you certainly feel the difference. A tiny bump that your finger can find quickly, making the exchange time as minimal as can be.

3. Extended Magazine Release Lever

Another “oldie but goodie” is the extended magazine release lever, very much in tune with the previous accessory. It is a time-saver, and when it comes to self-defense, it can literally be a life-saver. In a stressful situation, unless you are highly trained and skilled – sometimes, even then – your fingers can start to fumble and your mind can go blank. You need to be able to do what needs to be done, as quickly as possible. In a gunfight, you want to spend as little amount of time as possible with an empty magazine. This was actually added as a standard in the Gen4 series.

4. Magazine Well Insert

A very popular item, especially in competitions but also for everyday carry, is the magazine well insert. This is a very handy accessory that helps you heighten and control your magazine insertion technique as well as strengthen your grip. It is an extension that fits under the magazine well, and it provides a larger entrance for the magazine to slide into. This makes magazine changes fast, easy, and super smooth. The insert also makes sure that your grip is never too low since it forces your hand to arrive at a very precise location. It is an accessory that is easy to install, and while it may take some getting used to, it is one which is a must for those who wish to get a firmer grip and a quicker change of magazine. 5. Light

The U-Dot sights may be good for the range, but they are not the best for a real-life situation. There is no tritium in the original sights, which makes them almost non-existent in low lighting or nighttime conditions. Your sights should be something you can practice with and rely on, and that is why many Glock owners choose to modify their gun’s sights. Popular sights are ones with tritium and fiber-optics.

7. Trigger

Glock’s triggers are great as they are, but still, there are many who choose to change the trigger so that there is a lighter pull needed for the striker to hit. This is not limited only to those in competitions but is also popular with everyday carriers. A lighter trigger means a quicker release, and that can make a big difference. Learning and knowing the subtleties of accurate trigger pulls will make you a more cautious and more aware shooter in the long run, which is something that many shooters want to achieve.

8. Grip

We’ve spoken a lot about grip in this list. Glock themselves have made somewhat dramatic changes to the Glock 19 grip over the years. Detailing, checkering, finger grooves, thumbs rests.  A good grip is essential, no matter who or what you are. Civilian, army, police – everyone needs to get a grip, so to speak. Grips are a very personal and subjective thing. Some may be perfectly content with whatever grip came with their weapon upon purchasing, but those who fire their weapon a lot find that the factory-made grips are okay, but not amazing. There are grip accessories out there which aim to make every draw a perfect one. The gun should fit into your hand like a well-molded piece of weaponry, and there are products – like grip sleeves and other add-ons – which can help you get to that level of comfort and confidence.

9. Magazine Extension

The ideal, of course, is to not find yourself in a situation in which you need to fire your handgun. But, when push comes to the proverbial shove, you have to exercise your right to self-defense and protect yourself. In a situation such as that, you need to make sure you have any advantage you can, and like I said earlier – in a gunfight, the last thing you want to be is empty. Adding an extra 2 rounds to the standard 15 round magazine, by way of a magazine extension, has always been popular. Sometimes, it is those last two rounds that will make the difference. You never know.

10. Slide Cover

Okay, this last one may not count as a must have, but it certainly gives your gun a lot of personality. The slide cover is customizable, and while it may not be necessary, it helps you feel more comfortable with your gun. So, yes, feeling true comfort with any weapon comes from hours of practice and proper training, but it never hurts to have the Thundercats emblem, mark of the Jedi Order, or Batman symbol on your Glock!

Long passed are the days of my great grandfather where cotton balls and cigarette filters were used for hearing protection. Many modern hearing protection devices are so advanced that the can virtually eliminate gunshots while allowing you to hear the faintest of leaves rustling and human whispering. However, the Pro For Sho Maximum Hearing Protection Safety Earmuffs are simple, affordable, and effective. Let’s take a closer look and see what they have to offer.

Pro For Sho 34dB NRR Shooting Protection Earmuffs

First, let’s start with the basics. Pro For Sho’s Maximum Protection earmuffs are made by an American LLC company based in New Jersey who manufactures their goods overseas in countries like Taiwan. Now that might bother some people, but it definitely contributes to their remarkably low price tag. In fact, their flagship earmuffs are sold for as low as $15 on Amazon, which is pretty noteworthy.

As I unboxed these earmuffs I definitely get why they say “lightweight” but that did raise some concerns for their quality. Unlike a heavier duty set of earmuffs, I didn’t feel confident with these right out of the box though I knew that could all change as soon as I went to the range. 

Before I continue, I think it’s important to address a major claim made by Pro For Sho. They say that this model has a noise reduction rating of 34 decibels which is significantly high and certainly above what is considered high-quality protection.

Keep in mind that the average gunshot will clock in at around 135 decibels or so – A .22 vs. a .45 vs. a .460 Weatherby Magnum will give you a broad range so 135 dB is probably a fair estimate. It’s also worth noting that they have done proper testing according to ANSI S3.19-1974 specs which is the hearing protection industry standard for safety and reliability.

Additionally, it’s important to understand that a noise reduction rating of 34 decibels does NOT mean that your hearing protection device minimizes the sounds by 34 dB. In reality, let’s say you’re shooting a rifle with 100-decibel output and you have on these Pro For Sho muffs with NRR 34dB, that doesn’t mean your sound exposure would then be 66 (100-34). In truth, the way the NRR works is that you must subtract 7 from the original NRR and divide it by 2.

So in our case, the Pro For Sho earmuffs would yield a sound exposure of 86.5 decibels (100 – (34-7)/2). While this is a significant drop in sound exposure, Pro For Sho does say that earplugs should also be worn underneath their earmuffs to maximize the protection and I advise others to listen to their warning.

In terms of their build and design, there’s nothing special about these earmuffs but sometimes simple is all you need. They do fold up nicely and are relatively small which makes storage and transport pretty easy. Then there’s the comfort and I have mixed feelings. I could easily see that these were manufactured to be inexpensive, and that’s okay, but it doesn’t help their comfortability.

To be more precise, they were surprisingly comfortable for being made mostly out of cheap plastic, but after at least 20 consecutive minutes my head did start to hurt. That’s not necessarily a deal-breaker, but it’s not the kind of earmuff you forget you’re wearing.

Now we have performance and that’s actually where these guys impressed me. I started by running a magazine downrange with just the earmuffs and shooting my HK45 and it was louder than I was comfortable with. So I threw in some disposable foam earplugs that were NRR 32dB and reloaded.

Truthfully, it made such a difference and I spent 45 minutes at the outdoor range and about 1 hour at the indoor range to test the acoustics. I took a few breaks to smoke and take off my hearing protection but overall it was a pretty good experience and it helped me formulate my opinion.

I spent the next three Sundays at the range with a few higher caliber rifles to really test out the earmuffs and overall it was better than I expected based on the unboxing.

Conclusion

If I had to grade the Pro For Sho 34dB EarMuffs I’d probably say somewhere around a B-. They are one of the most affordable pieces of hearing protection you can get with a great NRR rating but you do always get what you pay for. The comfort is not great but also not horrible while the hearing protection is alright but actually quite good when paired with a good pair of earplugs. I would easily recommend these as a backup pair of earmuffs to take to the range or to keep around the house. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend regular shooters to rely on these are their go-to pair, but they shouldn’t be disregarded as a subpar set of hearing protection. They definitely have their appropriate place and use for shooters.

In 1776, Charles Wilson Peale invented a telescopic rifle sight. It was the first of its kind, but recoil-control was non-existent, which means it was not a viable option (people were getting hurt by the prototype, no doubt). Later on, in the mid-1800s or so, the rifle scope was improved, and the reflex sights were close behind. Fast forward a bunch of years and arrive at our review of Crimson Trace, who have been producing optics and visual components for firearms for the past 25 years.

There is always a chance that you will require some type of mod when it comes to visual acquisition of a target. Whether short-range or long-range, the idea is clear – to see what you are aiming at, so you’re not just shooting quasi-blind.

Lasers, sights, scopes, and other inventions have been helping the shooting community for generations, with the more modern innovations having a much greater advantage, of course. Crimson Trace primarily manufactures sights and related accessories for pistols, but they also have shotguns and rifles in the mix. 

I will speak more on this topic later, but I will say this right now: no accessory can replace hard work and training, no matter what company is involved. There are lasers and sights that work great, but some maintain that these would still be considered a frivolous purchase at best, and a complete waste of time and money at worst. Not every firearm needs them, and that’s the truth.

That being said, Crimson Trace has provided millions of people with ways of achieving enhanced target acquisition capabilities.

Crimson Trace

Lewis Danielson founded Crimson Trace in 1994. At the beginning, he was working out of the back room of the machine shop that he was managing at the time. Humble beginnings make for wonderful success stories, and this one is no different.

Danielson retired in 2016, but he left the business in the very capable hands of Smith & Wesson, who bought Crimson Trace for a cool $95 million.

The company produces grips, sights, lights, lasers, and scopes, designed for different manufacturer models such as Beretta, SIG Sauer, Ruger, Remington, Kel-Tec, Glock, and others.

Some of Crimson’s products are universal, though, so they don’t all have that limitation. The company produces devices for AK- and AR-style weapons, 1911s, and more. 

Crimson Trace Laser Grips

Convenience is the name of this game, and Crimson Trace grips are truly comfortable. The ability to simply grip the gun and have the beam turn on is truly convenient and time-saving. No switches, no buttons, no distractions – it’s pretty much the textbook definition of “user-friendly”.

To top it all off, Crimson Trace is the only ones in the market with grip-integrated sights like these. Once you’ve decided that you require a laser on your pistol or revolver, the next logical move is to seek the best way to go about it.

LaserGrips are available for different manufacturers, including Kimber, Kahr, Walther, Ruger, and Browning. The 1911 was not forgotten, and there are grips for those models as well. These grips will invariably add some bulk and weight to your gun, so bear that in mind when you are shopping or trying them out.

Crimson Trace Laserguard 

Laserguard items are product specific, which means that they are designed for a unique make and model, and will not be a good fit for any other product. There are over 50 models available, in red and green laser tech, via the website.

The Crimson Trace Laserguard mounts to the firearm’s trigger guard, offering seamless integration. Much like in the case of the Crimson Trace grips, these guards utilize the company’s “instinctive activation” technology, which makes sure that operation comes as naturally and intuitively as possible. The laser beam itself is adjustable for windage and elevation.

Once your iron sights and laser beam are in alignment, you are ready for business. No switches, no buttons, no need to think about it. Place your fingers where they naturally belong, and the laser is engaged. It’s ergonomic, has a nice look to it, doesn’t get in the way of properly firing, and while it does add a bit of weight, it is not so over-the-top that would make it not worth installing on the firearm.

One indirect drawback is the fact that finding the right holster could be an issue. Not necessarily, but it could, because of the difference in size. Sometimes a slight difference goes a long way. It really does depend on the make and model, but it depends even more so on your taste in holsters and holster aesthetics.

Crimson Trace Rail Master

Released in 2012, this device is highly versatile, capable of fitting on any M1913 Picatinny or Weaver-style accessory rail. In other words, this little guy is good to go for pistols, shotguns, and rifles, as long as there is a proper place to mount it. This line of universal laser sights and tactical lights is a thing of beauty. I mean, say what you want about performance and what not – there is no doubt in my mind that at least it looks good.

The Rail Master Pro is a subset of the Rail Master series, and it has one key difference: the light and laser are integrated into the same item. It’s a 2-in-1 deal, which invites you to choose between red or green laser, coupled with a powerful white 100 Lumen LED, in a rugged aluminum housing, and with four modes of operation: laser+light, light only, laser only, and laser+white strobe.

Crimson Trace worked for a long time on coming up with a system like this: lights and sights which would be universal, fit different types of firearms, and offer easy installation and hassle-free transferability. They did it.

Crimson Trace LiNQ

Meant for the AR and AK platforms and their derivatives, the LiNQ system is a wireless light and laser, controlled by a custom grip (which replaces the factory grip). The wireless pairing between the components is done in such a way that its frequencies are unaffected by most devices and broadcasting methods. It makes no difference, honestly, but it can be jammed because it is a civilian item, and as such it (usually) will comply and accept frequency interruptions.

Crimson Trace’s engineers worked on this product for about a decade. They had to make sure – and I mean sure – that the LiNQ system will not falter or fail. This is why the connection is a secure and individual one, paired at the Crimson Trace facilities.

The grip has a master on/off switch, and the light/laser module has an independent on/off switch. LiNQ features a green laser and 300 Lumen LED white light, with instinctive activation, and different modes of operation: laser+light, light only, laser only, and laser+white strobe.

Conclusion

In my opinion, there is no accessory which can replace training, practicing, and hands-on experience. Attempting to “get around” that by buying accuracy with money is almost never a good idea.

I am not saying that Crimson Trace-like products have no room. I am saying that a shooter should not rely on a laser too much, but rather use it as a secondary device, an amplification or enhancement of his (and his firearm’s) strengths. A shooter’s primary form of target acquisition will be his eyes and/or gun sights. And if a laser happens to be there to help out, all the better. But ideally, one should be proficient enough with the weapon before installing any kind of laser sight.

In poor lighting conditions, a laser can be a very good thing to have. The ability to get that beam on your target means better and more accurate follow-up shots. Regardless of what the movies show us, an ordinary gunfight in a civilian scenario will not last more than several seconds. You need to hone all of your skills and make it count, and this is where the laser truly shines (pun kinda intended).

Much like the physical universe which we inhabit, the world of ARs is always expanding. Eugene Stoner came up with the design back in the 1950s, and it remains one of the most popular weapon platforms around. People like Stoner, or Kalashnikov, or Browning – such gifted craftsmen, who gave us so much. Just look at John Browning’s treasure trove of a mind… he’s been dead for almost 100 years, and his designs are still being used as a basis for modern-day weaponry and cartridges!

The AR-15 (designated by the U.S. military as M16) has been called “America’s Rifle”. It’s been around for a long time, seen some major wars and conflicts, and has been revamped and redone by every two-bit hustlin’ firearms manufacturer in the country. With this being the case, does Spikes Tactical have something unique to offer customers of this hugely-popular niche?

Spikes Tactical

Mike (aka Spike) and Angela Register established their family business at the turn of the millennium, in Maitland, Florida. Like so many other outfits, Spikes Tactical began as a hobby but became something more. The company has grown a lot over the years, moved its HQ to Apopka, FL, and has managed to come out with some original and innovative products.

There’s been an amount of controversy regarding some of their business practices and advertising campaigns. Yet, even in the midst of these controversies, the quality of their weapons systems has never been a point of contention or disagreement. 

So, what does this company do? Plainly put, Spikes Tactical is helping people build the AR of their dreams. They offer complete rifles too, but I feel it is their “parts and accessories” department which churns out their best-sellers. It seems many people are happy to add a Spikes drop-in product – a lower, an upper, a barrel, etc. – when upgrading their AR-15.

Spikes Tactical Lower

There are currently 10 complete lowers to choose from in Spikes catalog, and they include several different configurations. The MSRP on these is $270-735, depending on whether you go for the enhanced or standard lower parts kit, and what options you choose to purchase when placing your order. It’s not just about a Calico Jack logo or Spartan mag well, even though designs like those are part of what this manufacturer is known for.

Indeed, I feel one of the best things about Spikes Tactical is the personality and character which their designs exude. Is it frivolous? To some degree maybe, if only for the obvious reason that the logo designs and great-looking mag wells are not really essential for proper use of the firearm. On the other hand, personal touches such as those help you develop a stronger relationship with your firearm, and that goes a long way.

The other option is a stripped lower, also available in several designs. 

Spikes Tactical Upper

Complete uppers (and parts of uppers) are available through Spikes Tactical. There are unique uppers for 5.56mm, 9mm, 300 BLK, and .308. There is also the possibility of purchasing a complete upper with built-in suppression for 300 BLK and 5.56mm.

As with the lowers, there are different configurations to choose from. This is exactly what the company set out to do with they first got into the business. They wanted to help people build the AR they’ve always wanted, and this is how they go about it. They provide people with many options, to keep things as customizable as can be.

As for parts, you can find various ejection ports, nuts, charging handles, gas blocks and gas tubes, latches and shims. All made in the USA, all tested, all with a lifetime warranty. Some items are on the pricier side, but you get what you pay for.

Spikes Tactical AR-15

One thing I will say right off the bat: with an AR like this, you’ll be able to get a lot more for your money. Spikes is a company which manages to provide a more upscale AR without too much damage done to your wallet.

It doesn’t cost outrageously more than any standard USA-made AR would, but what you get in return is more. The higher quality of this rifle is evident at every turn, from the lightness of its weight to the accuracy of its firing mechanism.

Not all of Spikes ARs are built the same, but I am fairly confident that their team puts as much effort into one as they do into another. One thing worth mentioning in this context is that Spikes complete rifles also have many variants and configurations, and some of them arrive without sights or a magazine.

But for the price that you pay and the quality you receive, it may not bother you that those need to be purchased separately with certain models.

There are many weapons around this world, and some of them are indeed quite good – but Stoner’s AR keeps on trucking. Its popularity never wanes, and it is still used by countless military forces and civilians.

The greatest thing about owning an AR is that it is so very versatile. I know that many weapons are constructed to be versatile, but there is a difference between proclaiming it and being it. The AR-15 didn’t become America’s Rifle for no reason.

Spikes Tactical Crusader

This is one of the more controversial weapons to ever grace the floors of the Spikes Tactical facilities. It is a quality AR-15, like the rest of the company’s lineup, but with some important differences.

The Crusader has drawn some fire from different folks, groups, and organizations, mainly due to the presence of a bible verse (Psalms 144:1) and a Crusader’s shield and cross, both of which are laser-engraved on the receiver.

Plus, when the rifle made its debut in 2016, an executive at Spikes said it was a weapon no Muslim terrorist would want to touch. You can see why this rifle caused something of a stir when it was released.

The weight reduction is real, people. And this is also the case with many other Spikes models. I’ve lifted and handled more than a few ARs, and this one is noticeably light.

You get a lot for under $1600. Remember, that’s the MSRP, but there are always sales going on online or offline. Don’t forget that gun shows might be a great place to find some bargains as well.

Some shooters are upset with Spikes Tactical for coming out with all of those different logos and symbols for their lowers. These people claim it facilitates the “range ninja” mentality, and that Spikes receivers are being made solely for those who want to look badass as they step close to that shooter’s line.

Now, if this was a crappy gun with a great logo, I may have agreed. But this is not the case.

Guns are a serious business, but some take this logo stuff way too seriously. Anyone can put whatever they want on their gun, as long as they stay within the confines of the law.

If someone wants a Batman symbol, or a Punisher helmet, or a bible verse on their gun – they are free to do that, plain and simple. Will there be people who judge them? Yes, always, but why should that matter?

Conclusion

Spikes Tactical is a respected company and has been for almost 20 years. Their guns are well-made, priced reasonably, and they deliver on their promise. Whether you are interested in purchasing a complete rifle or pistol, or whether you want to buy a drop-in piece of hardware for your AR, Spikes a company worth considering.

In my opinion, the point of owning a firearm is never about being “tacticool”. It is first and foremost a way to exercise that fundamental American right to keep and bear arms.

People carry weapons for any number of reasons, and most of those reasons are as valid as they come. If “because I wanna look badass” is your reason for owning an AR or for ordering that ‘Waterboarding Instructor’ lower receiver from Spikes Tactical – go for it. This is ‘murica after all, isn’t it?

Finally, a word to any “woke” range ninjas out there, and a solid piece of advice – don’t be one. You can personalize and customize your weapon, of course, and that can add a lot of practicality to it. But be cool about it, for crying out loud, and don’t act as if you are God’s gift to shooters or range officers. Don’t be a douche.
