Goodybe M9 and hello P320. All good things must come to an end – And as many of you probably know, the U.S. Government recently decided that the time has come to replace the Beretta M9 as the

Cpl.
main military service pistol. After a six-decade run, our military had to make the tough decision of finding a new sidearm to supply our troops. Just as the M9 took over for the historic and popular M1911A1, there would soon be a new and improved firearm that would send the M9 to the annals of history.

But with the tremendously rigorous requirements and so many quality pistols out there, it would prove to be no easy task. In fact, they had planned to start the selection process as early as 2011 but multiple delays postponed it until early 2017. The Government dubbed this process the XM17 Modular Handgun System Competition (MHS). The winner would not only walk away with bragging rights, they’d also secure the half a billion dollar military contract. In addition to supplying firearms, this enormous deal would also include ammo, accessories, and services –Not to mention the huge boost to the winning company’s market value.

2017’s MHS Entry Requirements

In order to take home the prize, the new military handgun had to prove that it’s more reliable, accurate, and effective than the phased out Beretta M9. The aforementioned legendary semi-auto served as America’s service pistol since the mid-80’s and solidified its position due to its incredible efficacy in some of the harshest environments in the world. Considering that the M9 is packed with tactical features and offers out of this world durability, the new sidearm would have to be one of the best pistols ever created.

Additionally, the new firearm had to be adaptable; meaning, it had to offer a variety of mag options, grips, and fire control devices. Plus, they wanted the new service pistol to have an integrated rail system, non-reflective neutral finish, and be suppressor-friendly. Furthermore, there were several tough accuracy and ergonomic conditions that had to be met. For example, the MHS winner would have to contain ambidextrous controls and be able to hit a 4” target from 50 meters consistently throughout its tenure. And although the military has been using a 9mm since the Beretta was first chosen, the MHS did not demand competitors to stick to this caliber.

The M9’s Competitors

The U.S. Military’s Handgun Competition in Action Firing the Sig P320

Although I had expected an American company to take the cake, there were a few serious European competitors who put up a good fight. Of these, the Austrian Glock 17and 22 were definitely considered top contenders. While less impressive, the Belgian FN FNS made by FN Herstal and the Czech P-09 (A.K.A. CZ 75) made by CZUB gave valiant efforts. Interestingly, Beretta entered their new APX pistols in hopes that they would keep hold of the massive contract, but it fell short in the competition.

From the Americans, the MHS saw handguns from KRISS USA (Sphinx SDP), Smith & Wesson (M&P), STI/Detonics Defense (STX), and Sig Sauer (P320). In my research, I came across something shocking; many experts were considering the anonymous STI-Detonics STX to be a frontrunner to win the military contract. Let’s take a closer look at these competitors and see how they line up against each other.

Who Came Out Victorious

On January 19, 2017 the United States Military announced that the winner of the $500+ million contract was Sig Sauer Inc. and their 9mm P320. In addition to supplying our armed forces with their new handgun, Sig Sauer will also be providing several types of ammunition and services. To get a grasp of how massive this contract is, the military stated that they expect to purchase up to half a million full-size P320s and nearly 10,000 compact models to supply the Air Force, Navy, Army, Marines, and U.S. Special Operations Command.

Sig Sauer debuted in 1853 as a wagon wheel manufacturer but when an opportunity for growth arose, they seized it and forever changed their legacy. In 1864, the founders of the small company entered a competition to supply the Swiss Army with a new rifle and won with their Prelaz-Burnand design. Fast forward nearly two centuries later and they are once again winning major military contracts. While Sig is already one of the most successful gun makers in the world, with an estimated global revenue of $500 million (2014), this new $500+ million contract might just propel them to the top.

Sig Sauer P320

One of the most important features on the P320 (now also called the M17) is its modular design. Whereas most pistols are nothing without their frames, the Sig’s frame is really just a shell for its removable fire-control unit. This small and simple self-contained chassis holds the striker, ejector, and trigger and can be easily removed for cleaning. Consequently, this feature enables the owner to manually change nearly every component of the gun. For instance, you can now easily interchange different sized slides and grips, and even convert calibers (.357, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP). Plus, while most guns rely on their frame to stay intact, P320 owners can buy a new frame for less than $50! Now it makes sense why the serial number is placed on the fire control group and not the frame; the former is essentially the real gun and the rest are just replaceable parts.

Sig P320 Field-Stripped

One of the biggest differences, or upgrades if you will, is that the M17 is polymer-framed. This key update drops the excess weight that its heavy predecessor, the Beretta M9, could not. It’s no surprise why the military wanted a polymer firearm; besides for being cheaper to make, polymers tend to handle environmental abuse better. And even though the M9 has proven itself over the years in the harsh deserts and frigid mountains in the Middle East, the military wanted more.

The P320 took the military’s MHS requirements and exceeded all expectations. In fact, the P320 is one of the most user-friendly handguns ever made. In addition to its several ambidextrous controls including the slide catch lever and mag release, the M17 is also super easy to disassemble (the takedown is fast and doesn’t require any tools). It’s important to note that its simple takedown is also incredibly safe. The Sig Sauer three-point takedown safety system prevents the firearm from being disassembled without first locking the slide to the rear and removing the magazine.

Sig Sauer P320’s Premium Performance

I don’t really feel it’s necessary to go into detail about the P320’s performance considering that it passed the MHS’ rigorous tests and beat out some of the toughest competitors on the market.

Nevertheless, I gotta praise Sig Sauer for their much-improved trigger. They outfitted the P320 with a silky smooth and consistent 6.25 lb. trigger pull that feels great. Lastly, in classic Sig fashion, the M17s can handle just about any type of ammo you throw in it. And knowing how dependable Sig Sauers are, plus their insane accuracy, these guns will be around for a long time.

Serious Problems with the P320 Sig Sauer Pistol

Even after winning the arduous MHS competition, there was still one serious problem that went unaddressed for months. Many users around the world experienced unintentional discharges after dropping their P320, which is totally unacceptable. Besides for the potential property damage that can occur, there’s also a serious concern for the possible physical harm or even death that can happen. However, just this week, Sig Sauer dealt with this issue and developed a number of adjustments and improvements under their new voluntary upgrade. More information about this will be available at sigsauer.com as of Monday, August 14, 2017.

Even after Sig Sauer was awarded the $500+ million contract from the government, they still had to put their celebrations on hold. With such an infrequent and profitable opportunity at hand, it was inevitable that there would be some protest from the competition. In this case, it came from Glock. The Austrian arms manufacturer claims that the MHS didn’t test the competing firearms thoroughly enough. More specifically, they believe that the military ignored “heavy endurance testing” and that the Glock would outscore the Sig. Nevertheless, an Army spokesperson made it clear last month that they were no longer entertaining Glock’s request for further testing.

Available Accessories for the P320

When it comes to comparing the new P320 to the reigning champion M9, the Sig Sauer definitely offers more aftermarket and accessory options. In addition to the variety of options made possible by the removable fire-control unit and Picatinny rail, the Sig is also available with several different sight systems. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the optional SIGLITE but I’ve also heard a decent amount of complaints about the Romeo1 sight on the RX model. That being said, be sure to check out these sights in person before ordering them.

When it comes to attachments, you don’t always get what you pay for, so be careful when picking out your aftermarket choices. Most folks utilize the P320’s Picatinny rail by adding either a laser sight, tactical flashlight, or a combination of both. One of the best lasers you can buy is the Crimson Trace CMR-206 Rail Master Universal (Green Laser). This laser can do it all, but with this kind of quality, $120 doesn’t sound so bad. On the other hand, I’ve seen excellent laser sights that go for less than $20! One of the best examples is the highly rated TACTICON Laser – Check out both of these laser sights on Amazon for the best prices.

As a tactical weapon, many P320 owners prefer to attach a flashlight to their gun, and understandably so. One of my favorite lights is the unassuming but powerful Surefire XC1 ($299). For something more affordable but still incredibly valuable, go for the Streamlight 69220 TLR-3 ($82).
For whatever reason, there’s a shortage of holster options for the Sig P320 so finding the right one won’t be easy. Sometimes simpler is better and the Sig Sauer-made Concealment Holster is a nice and straightforward way to carry your Carry or Compact model. As an added bonus, it’s fully ambidextrous and convertible between OWB and IWB carry. The only other holster I’d consider would be the Fobus Evolution Right Hand Paddle Attachment. Its lightweight polymers and low-profile design make it great for concealing your firearm.

If you haven’t heard of Sig Sauer’s P320 yet then I don’t know where you’ve been for the last year. As one of the best-selling guns in America, the new and improved Sig pistol is sweeping the nation thanks to its incredible versatility, durability, and accuracy. In fact, it was just this January that the P320 won the long-awaited and highly-anticipated U.S. Military Handgun Competition. In order to win the XM17 Modular Handgun System Competition (MHS), Sig had to beat out some of the toughest competitors the entire arms market has to offer. Besides for beating out the reigning six-decade defending champion Beretta M9, they also had to overcome frontrunners such as the FN FNS Compact, Smith & Wesson M&P, and the predicted-favorite Glock 17.

Eventually, on the 19th of January, 2017, the American Military announced that Sig Sauer Inc. was the winner of the highly sought after $500+ million government contract. To top it all off, each of the different branches of the military would be receiving Sig ammunition, parts, and services for the foreseeable future. Besides for boosting their company’s worth through the roof and earning bragging rights, Sig Sauer was able to walk away from the competition with the pride of supplying our nation’s troops. Knowing this, it should come to no surprise to find out that the P320 was awarded the prestigious (NRA) American Rifleman’s Handgun of the Year in 2016.

Sig Sauer may have started ages ago as a small-time wagon wheel producer, but fast forward around 150 years and you’ll see one of the most impressive arms developers in the industry. In today’s Gunivore breakdown, we’re going to examine the P320 from the inside out to see how the P320 has managed to establish itself in modern firearm glory.

Sig Sauer P320 Build & Design

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the P320, we already know that in order to win the MHS, Sig Sauer had to create a handgun that would be more effective, accurate, and reliable than the iconic Beretta M9. In short, Sig was compelled to build the next world’s best pistol. Additionally, one of the many requirements imposed by the military was that the new service sidearm had to be as resilient as it was versatile. So in designing one of the most durable firearms on the market, Sig Sauer had to make their new weapon adaptable with multiple magazine and grip options. Oh, and not to mention that it also had to feature a non-reflective neutral finish, an integrated rail system, and be suppressor-friendly.

P320 Compact Grip Module

Therefore, Sig’s team of brilliant engineers had their work cut out for them and they certainly delivered! In addition to the major modular adaptations, they also made several nuanced adjustments that seamlessly coalesced to propel the P320 into a whole new level of firearm. The innovation of the P320 begins with its frame, well the fire-control unit more accurately. What I mean is that while most firearms are meaningless without their frames, the critically-acclaimed Sig utilizes its frame more like a shell than anything else. Practically speaking, the P320’s frame is just a placeholder for the removable fire-control unit, which ultimately gives it its tremendous adaptability. This straightforward metal chassis holds the trigger, ejector, and striker and functions like the heart of the weapon. As a result of this distinctive design, shooters can easily swap grips, calibers (.357, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP), and even the slides on their P320. Besides for the obvious benefits of this, P320-owners can now replace their frame for no more than $50.

As one of the most adaptable and user-friendly handguns on the market, there’s just so much to love and talk about. I was pleased to see how simple the P320’s takedown was – Besides for not requiring any tools, the three-point takedown safety system prevents the pistol from being field-stripped without first removing the mag and cocking the slide back.

One of the most noticeable upgrades to the award-winning Sig was the addition of a polymer frame, something which they have generally avoided. The obvious benefit to utilizing polymers is that it effectively dropped weight without having to sacrifice any durability or control. As a matter of fact, the modern polymers can actually handle harsher environments and abuse better than the conventional steel builds.

Sig Sauer P320’s Performance

Sig P320 at the XM17 Competition

In their attempt at mastering the modular, polymer-framed pistol, Sig Sauer used their P250 model and transformed it, maximizing its aesthetics and abilities. To even be considered a contender for the MHS, the P320 had to be ambidextrous-friendly and able to hit a 4” target at 50 meters consistently. Considering that it passed these rigorous military tests with flying colors, I don’t think there should be any doubts about the 320’s accuracy or overall operation.

In order to achieve their peak performance, Sig’s team added a grip weight that works wonders for the gun’s balance and overall feel. The comfortable handling of the P320 is only surpassed by its natural pointing and intuitive trigger. While not everyone will love the crisp 6.25 lb. trigger pull, Sig designed it to be the perfect balance for safe carrying and fast shooting.

P320 Magazines

Because the rest of the P320 is so extraordinary, it’s easy to overlook something like their mags. Besides for incorporating a convenient, detachable mag well, Sig’s magazines are as reliable and durable as they come. The cherry on top of it all is that the P320 can handle just about any ammo you can load it with.

Sig P320 Accessories & Aftermarket Options

This part is tough for me because while Sig Sauer gave the 320 an integrated M1913 accessory rail, the semi-auto is already so freaking brilliant by itself. Furthermore, since many P320 owners opt to carry their gun, most don’t end up utilizing the rail. Nevertheless, there’s a nearly infinite amount of aftermarket options to consider. Considering that many shooters will opt for either a tactical light, laser sight, or a combination laser/light, I highly recommend checking out the Crimson Trace CMR-206 Rail Master Universal – This is one of the best and highly-rated affordable pistol accessories on the market ($120) that’ll take your performance to a whole new level.

Sig P320 With Optional Romeo1 Sight

Without getting too technical, Sig redesigned their sight system to enable ‘quick’ sight swaps, but most shooters generally stick with the factory-installed option. They do a lot of promoting for the ROMEO1 open reflex sight, but I’ve heard mix feelings about it – you’re either gonna love this optic or hate it with a passion, so make sure you can test one out before ordering one online. Additionally, Sig Sauer also markets their more-impressive SIGLITE Night Sights and Contrast Sights which are huge fan-favorites.

I’m not sure why, but there seems to be a bit of a shortage of holster options for the P320 with the exception of Sig-made models. That being said, there is a decent variety within their online catalog in a solid range of materials and prices. Many P320 fans praise Sig for marketing actually affordable holsters, like the LVL1 ($9), Concealment Holster P320 Carry & Compact Blade-Tech, IWB, OWB ($19 sale price), and the Leather Pancake Holster ($25). On the other hand, they also offer IWB and OWB premium options such as my favorite, the P320c OWB Tactical Holster from Black Point Tactical ($90).

P320 Problems

Just because the P320 won one of the world’s toughest firearm competitions doesn’t mean that it is exempt from having issues. As a matter of fact, there were dozens of reports of accidental discharges upon dropping the gun which is 100% not okay. In order to save their pistol from the abyss Sig had to act fast and they did just that. In addition to developing a number of necessary modifications, the award-winning company offered a free voluntary upgrade to all P320 owners.

Besides for this major neglect, Sig still had yet more adversity to overcome. Even after winning the MHS, Glock protested the outcome with the claim that the military failed to test the firearms thoroughly enough. More precisely, the top-selling manufacturer maintained that the MHS didn’t properly assess the respective guns’ long-term endurance. Nevertheless, an Army spokesperson reaffirmed the original decision and emphasized that they would not be taking Glock’s complaints any further.

Conclusion

All things considered, the Sig Sauer P320 is probably the best sub-$700 handgun on the market. What’s not to love about these remarkable pistols –They are insanely accurate, durable, ergonomic, and feature the most revolutionary components and technology in the industry. In general, I think it’s safe to say that if it’s good enough for the U.S. Military then it’s good enough for me.

Let the games begin, this is our Glock 17 VS SIG Sauer P226 Review!

In 1984, the U.S. military asked gun manufacturers to place bids on an upcoming project. The armed forces were looking for a new service sidearm. SIG Sauer submitted their P226 model, which was an advanced model of the already-popular P220. The military ended up choosing the Berretta 92F over the SIG, though some units chose to go with the P226 in spite of Beretta getting the coveted government contract.

Is so happens that around that same time, the Austrian military and police were also looking for a gun to replace their older models. The Glock Company, who until that time had not dealt with real weapons manufacturing, submitted their Glock model 17 to the competition. Glock came out the winner, coming in first and passing some major names. Soon enough, Austrian forces were using the Glock 17. Use of the Glock spread quickly, and it took Europe by storm.

There are a lot of reasons to draw comparisons between these two very popular handguns, and this is an attempt to make things easier for those who are deliberating between the two. Ultimately, we each have personal preference and a different taste, different aesthetics, different grip, and what not, so this won’t be a “good vs bad” kind of deal. Both guns are great, hands down, whether for everyday carry or as a service weapon.

To get started, let’s do a quick side by side comparison. This list doesn’t cover every aspect of these firearms, but it should give you an idea of their technical specifications.

So, those are the rough numbers. Both of them are full-size, service-type handguns. The SIG Sauer’s width is significantly wider, and some people see that as an issue.

The Similarities Only Go So Far

Both guns can handle the recoil of a 9mm round. They both have a safety system made up of several internal mechanisms (more on those soon). These are comparable, yet very different, and you can see that from the get go. The Glock is polymer-2 based, while the SIG is made mostly of steel. The Glock 17 is significantly cheaper than the SIG Sauer (although this is not specific to the P226). The manufacturer suggested retail price for these gun is around $500 for a new Glock, and $900 or $1000 for a new SIG Sauer.

Both of these handguns are tough and reliable. Again, it very much depends on personal preference, grip size, and – in some cases – concealability. Both are chambered in 9mm, and the P226 has the advantage of being chambered in different calibers. There are over 20 different models of P226 currently being produced and sold, whereas the Glock 17 is limited to Gen2, Gen3, or Gen4 models. Much like the Glock 19, the most popular Glock 17 generations are probably Gen3 and Gen4.

Safety Mechanisms

These guns also differ on safety mechanisms. Neither one of them has an external safety switch on the gun itself, but instead they both make use of an elaborate system of internal safeties, in order to guarantee (to the best of the manufacturer’s ability) that no accidental discharge occurs.

The SIG Sauer P226 has what is called the 4-point safety system ( It’s found on all it’s models like the P229 and P228), while the Glock employs a Safe Action system. Both systems are highly effective, include a drop safety, and have the ability to prevent any unwanted or accidental discharge. The only way a bullet is coming out of that barrel is if the shooter pulls the trigger.

Still, there are some crucial differences in the safety mechanisms of these two guns. With the Glock, once you rack the slide, the only way to de-cock the weapon is by pulling the trigger. That means that if you want to be in a “ready to shoot” position, you need to walk around with a cocked gun. The SIG Sauer, on the other hand, allows the shooter to safely lower the hammer while there is still a round in the chamber.

Personal Experience And The Bottom Line

Let’s take a look at some “bottom line” stats, based on personal experience:

Accuracy – both are very accurate, and if you are talking combat accuracy it is a tie. In a range setting, though, the SIG has some advantage for me over the Glock.

Weight – the Glock is lighter. If you are going to be carrying this on you, open or concealed, weight is definitely something to consider. Polymer versus steel.

Trigger – here it varies between first shots and follow-up shots. The SIG handles follow-up shots easier, but the Glock usually has a better first shot.

Grip – perhaps the most subjective item on this list, since it literally varies by hand size and shape. The SIG fits my hand better, but your hand’s mileage may very well vary.

Craftsmanship – there is something about the SIG which seems to make it better quality, and it is probably why it costs significantly more. Make no mistake – I would trust the Glock 17 with my life, but there is something about the SIG Sauer materials and feel which puts it above the Glock.

Customization – both guns are very customizable, but the Glock does seem to offer more aftermarket accessories and parts than the SIG. One user, writing on the SIG gun forums, stated that for him a Glock 17 is like a Harley-Davidson which can be customized, while the SIG is like a Ferrari which already comes with everything you need.

Appearance – for some, firearm aesthetics matter a great deal. They want a gun which looks as good as it shoots. The SIG probably has the advantage here. It looks nicer, overall.

Final Thoughts

Before making any decision, it is best to try both guns. See what fits in your hand, see how you handle both weapons, and see which one feels more natural to you. There is a good chance that once you try them both out, you will form an opinion that will make your decision easier. Or, you can rid yourself of the question altogether, by purchasing both handguns.

The P228, by the SIG Sauer Company, was the P229’s predecessor. It is a small, 9mm chambered handgun. This gun’s military model was designated the M11, and that model is still being used by various military organizations. The civilian model, P228, was produced and released in the late 1980’s through the mid 1990’s, and it has since been discontinued. This is Gunivore’s SIG Sauer P228 Review.

The P228 And P229 In Comparison

The SIG model P228 shares many similarities with the P229. The civilian P228 is a little bit more balanced than the SIG Sauer P229, and even though I didn’t notice that big of a difference when handling them, I trust what many others before have said. The P228 does not come with a frame rail, nor does it have a square trigger guard. It has a DA/SA trigger pull, like a lot of other SIG models, so for those who like that heavier first trigger pull, it will be satisfactory.

The P228 handgun was and still is (to those who have one) a fine handgun. It was produced in Germany and was doing well in the local and international market, but it was discontinued by the Germans due to SIG’s plan to go with milled slides, and to chamber the new P229 in 9mm. That was exactly what they did, so the P228 – along with its stamped carbon steel slide – was dropped from the catalog. However, a new version of M11 – the M11-A1 – made an appearance in 2012, and that model, with its variants, is being produced and used.

The P228 firearm was declared “discontinued” on and off for several years, but it managed to stick around even afterwards. New P228’s were last seen sometime in the 2000’s, and as of now have not made another comeback. The P228 model was also taken off the company’s official website, so there is a chance this is really it for this model. All that is left of the P228 is its newer military counterpart, so let’s focus on that model.

SIG Sauer’s 4-Point Safety System

Like with other SIGs, the 4-point safety system is implemented in lieu of a manual safety switch. The safety system consists of:

1 – The De-cocker – This allows the hammer to be lowered, regardless of whether there is a round in the chamber. When the hammer falls, it is away from the firing pin.

2 – The Safety Notch – Another device used to separate the hammer from the pin.

3 – The Firing Pin Safety – This is a mechanism which makes sure the firing pin stays motionless. It will not move, unless the trigger is pulled. What this gives is security and confidence, and it acts as a drop safety. This safety also works with a loaded gun. The trigger pull, and only the trigger pull, will start the chain reaction necessary for a shot to be fired. Drop it from any normal, reasonable height, and the safety will shake it off.

4 – The Slide Notch. This is a measure of caution for when the gun is cycling. It makes sure the firing pin is separated from the cartridge. Also referred to as the trigger bar dis-connector.

That is SIGs 4-point safety system, and it exists on their entire line of products. Nothing is fail-safe in this world, but the system which SIG’s engineers have created is very thorough, and unless you are going to abuse this gun and yourself (like dropping it from hundreds of feet in the air, or half-pulling the trigger while it’s in your pocket), the system will work to ensure your safety.

The sights on the M11 are SIGLITE night sights. The grips are made of black polymer. The slide finish is made of nitron, and the frame finish is made of hard black anodized steel.

The SIG M11 comes in two other variants:

M11-A1 Desert: slide and frame finish are of dark earth.

M11-A1 Threaded Barrel: same as the standard M11, but with a threaded 4.4 inch barrel, as opposed to the standard 3.9 inch barrel.

All three variants of the SIG Sauer M11 are issued to U.S. Naval Aviation, and other units in every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.

This handgun’s price varies, with the manufacturer’s suggested retail price – for the standard – marked at $1,149. For the two other variants, the suggested retail price is $1,220.

The M11 was designed and designated for the military, so it does not comply with any special State requirements, such as in California or Massachusetts.

In Summary

Shootin’

As for actual shooting, the gun handles very nicely. When the original P228 was released in 1988, it was received with enthusiasm by Navy SEAL’s, Navy fighter pilots, Secret Service, and different police departments all over the country, and in Europe.

It was sort of a shame that SIG had lost the U.S. military contract to Beretta a few years earlier. If a SIG gun was less expensive, there is a good chance SIG Sauer would have won that contract, with their P226 ( For a in-depth look at the P226 check out our SIG Sauer P226 9mm Review ). So, back to the P228 – the M11-A1 is an upgraded version of that gun, which makes it a great firearm and a popular choice for many shooters. Some people are SIG elitists, and some don’t fire SIGs because of this elitism. Either way, it gets results.

The one way in which SIG can be seen as inferior is in the realm of price. To own an original SIG Sauer handgun means to shell out some money. SIG makes some of the highest quality handguns there are, and you get what you pay for. Yes, a compact 9mm handgun can also be bought for as low as $180 or so, but SIG Sauer is something else. You definitely feel where that extra money went. Also, with SIG you get a lifetime guarantee on workmanship and materials.

Whether you are interested in getting yourself an original P228 or M11, or one of the newer M11-A1 models, you will find that this gun works as an everyday carry concealable / open carry weapon, or as a great service handgun.

This neat little handgun is a relative of SIG’s famous P226 9mm. It is a compact-sized gun, which also takes 9mm cartridges, as well as .40, and .357 SIG. In fact, the P229 was the first handgun that could chamber the .357 SIG round. It was also the first handgun to be manufactured in SIG’s Exeter, New Hampshire location. Until then, the company facilities were in Virginia. In this SIG Sauer P229 Review we’ll take a closer look at one of SIG Sauers’ most popular offerings, the P229.

Brief History of The P229

Sig Sauer

The P229 is considered to be ideal for concealed carrying, and for that reason it is very popular with law-enforcement and military personnel. Secret Service also carry this weapon. Of course, you don’t necessarily have to carry this gun in concealment, in order to appreciate its look and feel, its relatively smooth action, and its accuracy.

Being a mid-size, this gun can technically be compared to the Glock 19, and many feel that that comparison is certainly in order. However, because the P229 is a double action/single action (DA/SA) handgun, and because it is made of steel, not polymer, it is probably more easily compared not to a Glock 19, but rather to the Berretta 92. They both employ the same kind of action, and are even comparable in size and makeup.

Fun fact! – SIG lost a government contract to Berretta, in the mid-1980s. SIG’s full size P226 came close in the trials, but the weapon which was ultimately chosen was the Berretta’s 92. Still, there were some units who opted to go with the SIG, in spite of its inability to obtain the contract.

4-point Safety System

As for safeties, there is no safety switch located on the gun itself. Instead, there are 4 different internal mechanisms, which guarantee the safety of the pistol. SIG calls this its 4-point safety system. The safeties are:

the de-cocker, which allows the shooter to lower the hammer safely, while there is a round in the chamber. When the de-cocking occurs, the hammer is lowered but it still stays away from the firing pin.

the safety notch, which is another way of keeping the hammer apart from the firing pin.

the firing pin has its own safety, which makes sure that the pin will not move forward. That is, until the trigger is pulled, at which time the safety is removed and the pin is pushed forward to meet the cartridge’s primer. This third safety is also the gun’s drop safety. Even when dropped from a reasonable height, with a round in the chamber, the gun will not fire.

the slide has a notch, which separates the firing pin from the cartridge. Unlike the aforementioned firing pin safety, this one is there to make sure that the gun doesn’t accidentally discharge a round while it is cycling. This is called the “trigger bar disconnector”.

With all of these safety features combined, it can be said without a doubt that this is a very safe handgun to use. Obviously, precautions should always be taken at any moment. But, it is also good to know that SIG’s engineers gave a lot of serious thought to the weapon’s safety.

Users of the P229

The SIG Sauer P229 currently comes in 10 different styles, and there are even a few other which have already been discontinued. The different versions of the P229 are discernable by type of finish, frame material and coating, rail system, caliber, sights, engravings, and other features which set the different models apart. However, regardless of those features, they are still all P229s, and are basically the same reliable handgun.

And yes, this thing is highly reliable. For this reason, it is used by many military organizations, police departments, and government agencies, in the United States and the rest of the globe. Users of the P229 include:

Bangladeshi Special Forces

Canadian Special Forces

Greek counter-terrorist police units

Pakistani Special Service Group

Swedish Police

Turkish Special Forces

British Armed Forces

And, obviously, the United States, which has issued this handgun to Army, Coast Guard, Homeland Security, Secret Service agents, and various departments of law-enforcement all across the country.

In Summary

As with many SIG Sauer products, there is the issue of pricing. This gun, compared to its fellow compact 9mm contemporaries, is on the pricier side, with the manufacturer suggested retail price being over $1000. This can be a major deterrent for some, which is probably why it is best to shoot this gun before you buy it. Obviously, that would be the ideal situation with any weapon you would like to purchase, but sometimes you can let it slide. With this gun, because of its features, size, and price, I think it is better to be sure that this is the gun for you.

Another possibly hindering fact is that this thing has some weight. It is a bit of a heavy gun, for a compact. Not machine gun heavy, mind you, but still pretty heavy. All the more reason why you should try this gun out, before deciding to buy it. This is true especially if you plan on carrying it in concealment. You want to be comfortable, since this thing is going to be concealed on your person.

As for its shooting abilities, they are top notch. After you sling some lead down-range, you will be able to quickly get used to its DA/SA operation. Some see this as an issue, citing that the first and second shot could technically be further apart than you would like them to be. But, that isn’t really an issue – in my opinion – because it depends mostly on practice and skill. A novice, who is not used to DA/SA guns, may need some time to get acquainted with this system.

A good gun, like the SIG Sauer P229, will provide you with excellent results from the get go. Obviously, if you continue to train with it, you will get even better.

SIG has been making guns for over 150 years. SIG is actually an acronym, and it stands for Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft (Swiss Industrial Company). In the 1970’s, following a change in Swiss gun-manufacturing laws, SIG created a partnership with Sauer & Sohn of Germany, which is how SIG & Sauer was born. This partnership has been a very successful one, spawning subsidiaries in Germany and the United States. In this SIG Sauer P226 Review we’ll take a closer look at one of SIG Sauers’ most popular offerings, the P226.

Brief History of The P226

The P226 model was developed in the mid 1980’s, as a competing design in a bid for a U.S. military contract. The P226 was an improvement of the P220, which was Germany’s service handgun. The P220 is a single stack gun, and it is chambered in .45.

SIG was looking to change things up for this bid, because the trend at the time was gravitating a lot more towards the 9mm cartridge. And so, SIG put in a bid with the P226, a full size, 9mm, double-stack handgun.

Berretta 92F

The company’s entry did not get them that contract, but it got very close to winning, surpassing several very popular brands on the way. In fact, the P226 came so close, that there were units (Navy SEALs and Texas Rangers, to name a couple) which decided to go with SIG’s model, even though the gun had failed to secure the coveted government contract. That plum went to the Italian Berretta company, and its 92F model.

Conspiracy theory time: it is suggested that the reason Italy got the nod from the U.S., was due to a semi-shady under-the-table kind of deal, whereupon Italy agreed to place U.S. missiles on its land, and play host to some U.S. military bases.

Like the Glock’s model 19 which I have previously reviewed (If you haven’t read it check it out here – Glock 19 Review), the P226 is considered by many to be SIG Sauer’s ‘SIGnature’ handgun. It is not hard to see why. It’s a great-looking gun, easy to operate, a breeze to maintain, and it is very accurate to boot. It comes in a variety of sub-models, so it is very easy to find a P226 which is just right for you.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

Gun Safety

The P226 has no external safety mechanism. It is designed as a service pistol, and that means that it was created with the intention of being ready to fire at a moment’s notice. Draw, aim, shoot. This gun is one which is meant to be carried with a bullet in the chamber.

It is important to note that while the P226 does not have a safety switch or lever, it does have 4 internal (or ‘passive’) safety features, which are a part of the handgun itself:

1 & 2 – the de-cocker, and the safety intercept notch. It’s two for the price of one, so to speak. When the de-cocker is engaged, the gun’s hammer may be lowered safely. The notch makes sure that the hammer stays away from the firing pin, making it impossible for the gun to go off unintentionally, even with a round in the chamber.

3 – a third safety is the firing pin safety, which is also the gun’s drop safety. Unless the trigger is pulled, the firing pin will not move. This stays true, even when the pin is struck with significant force by the hammer. It is the trigger which disengage this safety feature.

4 – the trigger bar disconnector, located in the slide itself. There is a kind of lock built into the slide, which keeps the firing pin away from the chambered cartridge. The lock is disengaged only when the slide is in the proper position. This is a safety which comes into play when the gun is cycling, and it makes sure that no round is discharged before the gun has reset itself to its normal firing position.

The P226 has many variants, like a lot of other SIG models. Over 20 variants of the SIG P226 are still being produced and sold. Other ones have been produced in the past, but have since been discontinued. These variants differ in many ways, although they are all essentially the same P226. Some of them are merely engraved with a special insignia, or feature a different kind of finish. There are several P226s which sport more significant changes, such as the addition of night sights, a picatinny rail, grips, or a frame made of a lighter material. It should be noted that the P226 isn’t for shooters with smaller hands due to its trigger placement. There are modifications one could do to solve this problem but for those that would rather not bother there are a ton of different types of small handguns on the market to suit your needs. One such gun that I really love is my Glock 26, It’s super lightweight and efficient.

As stated earlier, SIG’s P226 is definitely an all-time favorite. It is the go-to gun for many a-shooter, and it constantly appears on various lists of popular handguns.

Making Its Mark World Wide

While the P226 may have not gotten that particular U.S. government contract, many military organizations and security forces have been using the SIG P226 ever since.

Some examples of countries and armed forces which use the P226:

In Action

Bangladesh – Special Security Force, Navy

Canada – Special Forces, Mounties, various police departments

Finland – Finnish Army

France – Tactical Squad of the French Gendarmerie

Portugal’s Armed Forced, Singapore’s Armed Forces, Sweden’s Police Forces, Turkey’s Special Forces, many United States Police Departments, United Kingdom’s British Army – the list goes on and on.

In Summary

Lightsabers!

It is obvious that the SIG Sauer P226 is one handgun which will not be easily replaced, not even with the next-generation of handguns, rifles, and light-sabers being just around the corner. Well… perhaps I’ll make an exception for the light-saber.

The P226 is a no-brainer. It is an easy purchase, because you know exactly what you are getting into. With SIG’s lifetime warranty, and its proud history of outstanding gun-making, you know you are purchasing a quality item, which is sure to last a long time.

Obviously, like all weapons, you take the good with the bad. One very obvious con is the price. There are no two ways about it – the SIG Sauer P226 is relatively expensive. Depending on the model, and its technical specifications, a P226 can run somewhere between $700 and $1000. This is not a cheap gun, nor is it meant to be. If you want a cheap handgun, there are plenty of those out there.

The reason many organizations and individuals invest the money in a SIG, is because it is worth it. It works, it shoots, and it barely ever fails. Now, that is one bottom line which every shooter can get behind.

SIG Sauer is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of handguns and rifles. It all started in 1853, when three individuals named Friedrich Peyer im Hof, Heinrich Moser, and Conrad Neher, established a small wagon-making company in Switzerland.

The story of SIG Sauer history and development, is a classic tale of success through hard work and persistence. The SIG saga fully demonstrates just how far great minds can go, when they are working together towards a common goal.

These three Swiss gentlemen originally built what they thought would be a wagon factory, in the city of Rhine Falls, Switzerland. They went on to produce wagons and railway cars, and had no way of knowing that their company would eventually become one of the world’s largest and most respected manufacturer of small arms.

After seven years of making wagons and railway cars, the three founders took up an invitation made by the Swiss Federal Ministry of Defense. The Swiss authorities were looking for a new kind of musket, in order to replace their service weapons, and the wagon company was up for the challenge.

This is very reminiscent of the ascent of other popular and game-changing firearms, such as the AR-15 (M16, for your military folk), or the AK-47.

The Swiss wagon company won the bid, with its innovative Prelaz-Burnand rifle design blowing out the competition. After winning that challenge, the Swiss Army ordered 30,000 units of the rifle, and the wagon company changed its name to Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft (Swiss Industrial Company), or SIG.

SIG Sauer’s History

In the time between the mid-1800’s and the 20th century, SIG produced a number of firearms for the Swiss military, its law enforcement offices, and its general population.

In the 1970’s, The Swiss government decreed that local gun manufacturers had to partner with a foreign company, if they are to continue manufacturing weapons in Switzerland. SIG opted to partner up with Sauer & Sohn, a German firearms manufacturer, which was founded in 1751. This company was producing handguns and rifles, and it was already known for its quality hunting rifles, shotguns, and handguns. The partnership with SIG only improved Sauer & Sohn’s reputation, and the partnership between these brilliant designers and engineers continues to produce amazing firearms to this day. Like I said, it is the story of great minds.

The SIG small arms division was growing rapidly, and in the 1980’s the company turned its attention to the United States, as it saw the proverbial land of opportunity as a way to increase its share of the global market, and as a chance to supply Americans with high-quality firearms. SIG Sauer was on a mission.

In 1985, SIGARMS, Inc. – the company’s U.S. branch – was established in Virginia. The American subsidiary imported handguns from Europe, and went on to produce several models of its own, such as the P225 9mm, the P226, and P228. In the year 1990, the company’s headquarters moved to New Hampshire, and there began the production of the P229, chambered in .40 S&W.

In the 80’s and 90’s, the company made serious advancements in the field of firearm manufacturing. It spearheaded state-of-the-art technologies and designs. It was, and continues to be, a leader and trend-setter, rather than a mere follower of mainstream gun-making.

Today, the company’s headquarters are still located in New Hampshire. In 2007, the U.S. branch changed its name from SIGARMS to SIG Sauer, and business is still booming for this arms manufacturer. Their guns are known for their accuracy and dependability, all over the world.

Currently, SIG Sauer have about 900 employees. Together with Sauer & Sohn of Germany, and Swiss Arms AG (SIG Sauer’s parent company) of Switzerland, SIG Sauer makes up one of the largest firearm manufacturing companies working today. This global network of branches, consisting of companies in the U.S., Switzerland, and Germany, allows SIG Sauer to respond quickly to commercial supply and demand, to fluctuating gun laws (whether local or international), and to the fast-paced advances occurring in technology, gunsmithing, military doctrine, and law enforcement regulations.

SIG Sauer Academy

Apart from manufacturing and marketing firearms, SIG also founded the SIGARMS Academy (later renamed the SIG Sauer Academy), located in New Hampshire. Established in the late 1980’s, this training facility began as an idea thrown around by SIG execs and Federal officials from various government agencies in the U.S.

The Academy was meant to facilitate the shift from revolvers to semi-automatic weapons, which was an ongoing process occurring in all U.S. agencies. The Academy was doing great things, and following its success with government agencies, there was a growing demand for the Academy to open up its gates to the civilian population.

These days, the Academy not only trains troops, agents, and officers, but also offers civilian training for private citizens, as well as various organizations and businesses, which are not affiliated with the Armed Forces.

This Academy has it all – a pro shop, a 360 degree range, a 1000 yard range, a maritime training area, and a tactical training area. The Academy offers two different types of training, based on the audience: Armed Professional, and Responsible Citizen.

These training methods vary in a lot of ways, and they underscore the vast differences which exist between these populations. While it is an armed professional’s job to initiate contact in order to contain and manage an armed confrontation, a private citizen has no such obligation. SIG knows exactly who its audience is, and the Academy delivers the appropriate training accordingly. This was a very smart move, since it allowed SIG to reach a higher percent of the population. You don’t have to be the owner of any SIG products to take advantage of their unique training facilities. Whatever you shoot, SIG’s professional and dedicated team will have you shooting better, faster, and with greater confidence.

SIG’s Legion Series

SIG realizes that in the world of firearms, too, there are amateurs and professionals. Precisely for those unique shooters – who rightly consider themselves to be part of an elite, and who demand nothing but the very best from themselves and their weapons – SIG has taken two of its most popular firearms, and given them a serious overhaul.

So far, SIG’s Legion model series includes the P226 and P229 pistols, with others in line to join them.

The engineers at SIG Sauer worked tirelessly, in order to provide the professional shooter with enhancements and features which better suit the professional’s style. These features include, but are not limited to: reduced and contoured beavertail, enhanced action, low profile slide catch and de-cocking levers, solid steel guide rod, reach-adjustable trigger, custom and checkered grips, and a high contrast XRAY sight.

The Legion series enhancement does not only include firearms, but it is also the door to exclusive opportunities and gear from SIG. According to the company, the future will bring with it an array of firearms, accessories, and one hell of a shooting experience that is unlike any other.

SIG Sauer is committed to excellence. It has a proud tradition of nothing less than brilliance. SIG has been bringing it with force, ever since the mid 1800’s. I wasn’t around back then, but I’ll bet that even when those Swiss gentlemen were busy making railway cars and wagons, their products must have been the finest in all of Switzerland.

The SIG story is one of humble beginnings, seized opportunities, long-term thinking, and enduring success. This company would not have made it, if it wasn’t one of the best in its field. It came through for the Swiss authorities back then, and it comes through for its numerous clients and customers now.

Civilians, law enforcement officers, government agents, military personnel – all over the world, there are people who know that SIG is synonymous with quality and ingenuity, and who trust this company’s weapons with their lives.

The SIG story is one of inspiration, perspiration, and innovation. It just goes to show that when you put your mind to it, you can achieve pretty much anything.
