Kel Tec KSG

Before we dive into the KS7 it’s prudent that we review the pump-action KSG, the Kel-Tec platform the KS7 is based on. The KSG is a bullpup 12 gauge shotgun that’s budget-friendly with a mixed reputation. The special quality of the KSG, besides for being a bullpup shotgun, is that it holds two magazine tubes each with a 7-shell capacity. As a result, the KSG quickly became the coolest tactical shotgun on the market and sales skyrocketed. The KSG came out in 2011 and is still in a league of its own with almost no competition. Nevertheless, many shooters simply won’t touch them. I happen to think the KSG is a cool gun to own but I wouldn’t say that it’s necessarily practical. I keep one in the safe but it’s definitely not my go-to for home defense. Now that we have a little bit of background, let’s take a look at Kel-Tec’s newest tactical shotgun, the KS7.

Kel-Tec KS7

The KelTec KS7 looks like it was designed for a cheesy Netflix Original science-fiction movie remake with at least two washed-out actors. Others might say it looks like it was made by Dr. Frankenstein himself for home defense. Besides for all of the debate surrounding Kel-Tec as a company, bullpups themselves are a hot topic of conversation within the gun community. For instance, some folks can’t get enough of guns like the Steyr AUG, Tavor X95, and the FN F2000 to name a few of the best bullpups. On the other hand, some people prefer traditional builds and nothing else.

Regardless of any bias, I want to take a closer look at this marvelous gun because it’s really something else and did win some pretty prestigious awards from the NRA. The first thing that you have to notice is the versatility built-into this firearm. First of all, a bullpup shotgun can be used for home defense, hiking in the backwoods, or for a great day at the range. Next, you’ll notice that Kel-Tec offers optional Picatinny and M-LOK accessory mounting systems for adding even more features. The KS7 also has a nice large barrel considering its small size which leads to better accuracy. Similarly, shotguns can be great for close quarters and the bullpup design maximizes that effect.  

Now you can’t miss the carry handle on this shotgun and that’s a weird sentence to write, but many owners like this feature. I don’t like the idea of a carry handle when a sling can easily replace it and offer a superior sight system. Nevertheless, they did a decent job of incorporating the fiber optic bead sight into the carry handle. I don’t love it but it’s not bad for a carry handle. 

In terms of its tactical abilities, the rear loading and downward ejection make it a solid choice for defense and tactical situations. This also makes it an ambidextrous gun which is a nice bonus. Likewise, the bullpup design does add control to the power of the 12 gauge so shooting on the move, for instance, is way more manageable than a standard shotgun. 

In practice, the KS7 is more dependable than the KSG thanks to its more simple internal design. However, unlike the KSG, the KS7 only boasts a 7-round capacity but that’s plenty for a shotgun all things considered. I did some plinking downrange and really got the hang of using the fiber optic sight within the carry handle and I was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty seamless to shift between targets and keep a solid sight picture. 

I’ve been enjoying my Mossberg Shockwave for home defense but I can see why others might opt for the KS7. Even with all of the unusual elements to this shotgun, it often comes down to the price. Many Kel-Tec owners choose their respective weapons because of their price tag and believe they’re getting the most bang for their buck. 

In terms of ergonomics, it’s surprisingly ergonomic for a 12 gauge bullpup shotgun. The control was pretty good and the forward handguard was alright. I like the pistol grip texture and control system, though the trigger was subpar and loading the shotgun was not simple. The KS7 has a thin loading port which made it hard for me to load with my fat thumbs but I managed. Just don’t expect to win any competitions for speed loading. 

Out in the woods, I had nothing but positive experiences getting on target and transitioning well. I switched between birdshot, double-aught buckshot, and slugs and was able to confidently get on target fast and get my loads downrange without any difficulty. Additionally, my follow-up shots were fast and on-target which was a nice thing to see with this gun. The recoil was definitely felt, most folks with tactical shotgun shooting experience shouldn’t have any troubles.

Kel Tec KS7 for Sale

The Kel-Tec is readily available in most gun shops and dealers without requiring any tax stamps. While Kel-Tec guns can be problematic in some fascist states like California, the KS7 shouldn’t be problematic. For instance, it meets the California 26” minimum length mandate and a less than 10-round capacity.   

Kel Tec KS7 Accessories

While I don’t love the carry handle, attaching lights or lasers on the carry handle was pretty seamless and effective for simulated tactical exercises. Anyone using this gun for home defense or tactical uses can benefit from attaching an accessory. I definitely recommend checking out my favorite shotgun accessories but you can’t go wrong with the Streamlight TLR-3 flashlight or the TLR-2 combo flashlight and laser sight. 

Kel Tec KS7 Problems

So I only had limited time with Kel-Tec KS7 and experienced no issues with it but there are many shooters who experienced serious problems. I spoke with many shooters and heard stories of failures to feed, cycling issues, ejection problems, and jams. That being said, there are ways to help this, such as breaking-in the gun, cleaning and lubing it properly, and making sure your operation is smooth and deliberate. Otherwise, you just have to know it’s not the gun you want to put your life on until you’ve solved all of the issues. When it’s working, this is a cool and useful gun, otherwise, it’s a liability. 

Conclusion

I like the Kel-Tec KS7 but it’s hard to recommend a firearm that has a history of failure. I think this gun has its place but I wouldn’t feel comfortable putting my life on it. On the other hand, I think it would be a blast to use at the range to blow up bottles and watermelons. I certainly wouldn’t buy this gun without the ability to return it within 90 days. I hope one day these guns will be dependable because I think there is a huge market for them. Even if they were to increase the price to increase the quality, they would be much better off.

Serbu Super Shorty Shotgun

The first thing that comes to my mind when picking up the Serbu is that it’s got to be illegal in several states and require ATF intervention. Well, that’s partially true as the Super Shorty is technically classified as a Class 3 NFA Weapon / Title 2 Firearm. However, because of the way it’s manufactured, it doesn’t qualify as a short-barreled shotgun, it’s actually labeled as “any other weapon (AOW) by the government. AOWs are basically firearms that don’t fit into a box, such as pistols with foregrips and pen guns. That being the case, the ATF stamp only costs $5 instead of the traditional $200 tax stamp.

Super Shorty Design

The Super Shorty is among the most unique firearms on the market but I believe they serve a very functional purpose. These are 12 gauge shotguns barely measuring 16″ long. Likewise, the foregrip and stockless design essentially make this an ideal home defense gun for non-precision shooting. But that’s not to say that the Serbu isn’t accurate, it’s actually surprisingly on target once you get the hang of it. As an added bonus, the Shorty is usually built around either a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 receiver, so you know the major components are of quality.

The folding foregrip makes the pump-action faster and easier while stabilizing the firearm for more controlled shooting. Because the foregrip folds, this helps make concealing and operating it as a home defense gun that much easier. It’s shotgun that can literally fit under your pillow and that’s just cool.

The Serbu holds just 3 rounds but for home defense, that’s okay. The nice thing is that the Serbu can handle pretty much whatever cartridges you throw at it, the only question is whether or not you can handle the power of shooting slugs in such a small firearm. Shooting birdshot out of the Serbu was fun and makes for a fun day of shotgun plinking. It also handles buckshot quite well and the control is still manageable, so it’s not a bad choice for home defense. Now, shooting slugs is a whole different ball game and may feel like your wrists are going to snap.

Operating the Super Shorty is fast and seamless and is a true pleasure to shoot. It’s definitely a unique firearm but it’s also practical to own. It may not be easy to purchase one of these, but it’s worth the effort. The Tampa-based manufacturer also makes a few impressive long-range rifles but their distinctive shotgun takes the cake.

Panzer Arms Availability

Panzer Arms is a Turkish-based gun manufacturer that has been producing hunting rifles and other firearms for around 50 years. While many shooters will question the integrity of a Turkish-made firearm, the American market has been largely impressed by Panzer Arms. While this may not attest to the quality of all Turkish guns, it safe to say that Panzer Arms has earned the title of a legitimate and trustworthy manufacturer.

Nevertheless, most people get these guns through an importer and many people choose Atlantic Firearms. However, there is an American Panzer Arms subsidiary called Panzer Arms USA. Keep in mind that because this is such a budget-friendly firearm, choosing an importer usually revolves around availability and less about finding the right price. This isn’t always the case with niche guns but the Panzer Arms guns are kind to the wallet.

The Panzer AR12 is basically an AR-15 shotgun and there aren’t many of those on the market. Being such a niche gun definitely adds to the appeal of this gun but it’s so interesting and affordable, I can’t imagine who wouldn’t want one. On the other hand, I didn’t have the most amazing experience with the similar Rock Island Armory VR80 but I was ready to give this AR-shotgun a chance.

Picking this gun up is very much like picking up your standard AR, even in its heaviness. The pistol grip, semi-adjustable synthetic stock, and full rail totally hide the fact this is actually shotgun. So I loaded 5 slugs into a magazine (which felt weird) and then I got the sense that this was more than just an AR-15.

The controls were intuitive and functioned perfectly. It was easy to load and unload and the handling was fantastic for shooting slugs. In practice, I really think this gun has the potential to be a great home defense gun. While it’s all fun and games at the range, this showed real potential for use as a defensive firearm. I love shotguns and I think there are many defensive applications for them. However, the Panzer AR12 gives you that but adds the control and tactical benefits of the AR-platform.

I love that there are multiple attachment points including swivel mounts because it really gives this gun a tactical edge. Panzer understands that while this gun is fun to shoot, it does indeed serve a functional purpose. That being said, I was a bit disappointed that there is a fake barrel shroud attached that is just for looks. It’s not a big deal, but this isn’t a damn toy. Aesthetics are important but I don’t want fake anything on my firearms.

The Panzer Arms AR12 Pro was not as exciting as I had hoped as it’s remarkably similar to the standard model. The primary difference is that the AR12 Pro features slightly different rails and an aluminum alloy receiver. While this may not seem like much, it does have a slight effect on performance. The added 3 pounds of weight of the reinforced receiver will help the firearm last longer but it also helps add stability and give the gun a more solid feel. I definitely wasn’t disappointed with Panzer Pro but I was hoping for more innovation.

So if you thought the original Panzer Arms AR 12 was a Frankenstein kind of gun, then meet the Panzer BP12 – The bullpup version of the AR-15 12 gauge shotgun. Like the AR12 and AR12 Pro, the BP12 is a tactical masterpiece with all the bells and whistles you’d want in a gun like this if you ever imagined such a thing.

For starters, I love bullpups because they’re super reliable, ergonomic, tactical, and fun guns to own and shoot. One of the most interesting components is that this baby is only 30″ long but has a 20-inch barrel. Yes, that means that there’s only 10″ not part of the barrel meaning this gun makes use of its space like a packrat in a studio apartment.

However, shooting the BP12 is surprisingly comfortable and intuitive if you’re at all familiar with bullpups. I really like that it’s ready to handle all kinds of optics and attachments plus it’s got built-in sling points and an angled foregrip which gives the gun superb handling. It’s a very natural feel that fits this firearm nicely. Plus, it’s an ambidextrous-friendly gun so they really put some thought into the controls of this system.

You’ll also notice that, like many bullpups, this long gun is supremely balanced which makes handling the gun that much easier. I also want to mention the stock with its adjustable comb and comfortable buttpad. This gun needed a top-notch stock and I think Panzer did a fairly good job with it.

Panzer Arms AR 12 Accessories

At the end of the day, the accessory options for the Panzer Arms AR 12 are nearly endless. They placed attachment points all over these long guns and made it one of the most tactical-friendly firearms on the market. These are definitely niche guns but they are functional, affordable, and a blast to shoot.

You can search for shotgun accessories or rifle accessories and you’ll find just what you’re looking for. Between lights, lasers, grips, and more, there’s no limit to how you can deck out your AR12. Personally, I think a side-mounted laser light is a sweet set up and it’s hard to beat Streamlight and their many tactical options. A reflex sight is also a great choice for tactical shooting with this gun and the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro Sight is one of the best money can buy.

Guns are heavily linked to films, they are the modern-day Excalibur to our favorite heroes. That being the case, Hollywood has provided us with many timeless heroes with an equal depth of iconic firearms, especially shotguns. This is a list of our favorite iconic shotguns found in films. Tactically-speaking, shotguns are not ideal for the majority of gunfights, but they look pretty sweet in the movies and have become a go-to for filmmakers to bring some extra firepower to their characters and have their weapons stick out. Shotguns are not a standard issue weapon in the military so they help to bring some extra flair in a lot of action movies.

Winchester 1887

So iconic is this firearm that it is on almost every movie poster of Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The Terminator franchise has had some weak films since its inception and following sequel, but the iconic scene of the T-800 pulling the Winchester 1887 out of the box of roses in the hallway of the mall will always remain one of my favorite scenes in cinema history.

Watching the T-800 blast away with one hand while driving a motorcycle with the other is one of the scenes that solidified Arnold Schwarzenegger into action movie royalty. A few other films have also used the Winchester 1887, usually modified or sawed-off, but none have used it in such as memorable or eye-catching way as Terminator 2.

12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun

Mad Max and the sawn-off 12 gauge double-barreled shotgun are synonymous. Mad Max wielding a sawn-off 12 gauge like a pistol while driving a muscle car around a desert wasteland is an iconic image in cinematic history.

It has spawned an entire genre of post-apocalyptic desert movies taking place in similar environments with similar loner heroes who come out of the wasteland and save the day. This is typically followed by the end of the film with hero slowly fading back to their life of solitude in the desert wasteland. Rarely has a firearm followed a character so closely across four films and even an actor change (with the exception of the Walter PPK and James Bond). In the dirty, dusty future of the Mad Max apocalypse, the sawn-off double-barrel shotgun is almost an ideal weapon.

The 12 gauge platform is incredibly useful in an apocalypse because of the versatile rounds it can shoot. The 12 gauge can take down an elephant or small game depending on the type of round you load in it. The cut-down barrel and stock make it concealable and also comfortable for everyday carry. Likewise, because of its simple design, the double-barrel shotgun is very reliable and every trigger pull will give you a bang, unless you load bad ammo into it, as seen in two of the Mad Max films. Overall, the 12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun is a great tactical and entertaining choice for a drifter in a futuristic apocalypse.

Spas 12

With a futuristic look and original design, it is only logical that the spas-12 comes up in some classic actions movies and iconic scenes. Visible in almost every armory in movie history and a go-to pick anytime a character needs a cool looking shotgun, the Franchi Spas-12 is as iconic as they come. Its most classic role has to be in Jurassic Park where it was wielded in a hunters duel against a velociraptor. *Spoiler alert*, it may not have been the best firearm to try and kill a velociraptor with since the hunter was eaten alive and didn’t manage to kill the dinosaurs.

The Spas-12 original design of being a semi-auto shotgun with the capability to be pump action. This function is used for low-pressure ammunition such as tear gas and less than lethal rounds such as rubber bullets and sandbags. The Spas-12 was banned under Clinton’s assault weapons ban in 1994. Purchasing one requires finding a “grandfathered” one that was imported prior to the ban.

Remington 11-87

This semi-automatic beauty was made iconic by its suppressed version in No Country for Old Men. The psychopathic hitman on a killing spree wields this eye-catching and memorable suppressed shotgun. Completely inaccurate for the film’s setting because the Remington 11-87 was invented in 1987 and the film takes place in 1980, I will cut the filmmaker some slack because this weapon is so iconic.

The first time I had ever seen a suppressed shotgun and was blown away by the creative use of it by the character in the film. The originality of the firearm meshed perfectly with the originality of the character, quietly unassuming while simultaneously being very intense and intimidating the character and the firearm mirror each other. The sight of this shotgun immediately brings thoughts to this movie and this film bring immediate images of this iconic suppressed shotgun. It was a tactically logical choice for the character to have this weapon in his arsenal.

The Holy Shotgun

The Holy Shotgun (fictional) from the film Constantine starring Keanu Reeves always comes to mind when discussing movie shotguns. In my opinion, a very underrated film, John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) battles demons with a semi-automatic gold plated shotgun covered in religious relics with an under-barrel flamethrower. One of the most savage looking weapons ever used in film history, even the gold shells look intimidating.

Usually, I am not a fan of gold weapons as they are unnecessarily flashy and serve no real tactical purpose, I make a huge exception to the Holy Shotgun. This weapon could be no other color than gold, and it fits the film perfectly in functionality and tactical utility. If I were battling demons this would be my go-to firearm. Not to mention the dragon’s breath under-barrel attachment, which shoots a stream of fire. The fictional weapon seems to be based on the Armsel Striker 12/SWD Street Sweeper, this conclusion is based on the similar drum magazines and general shapes.

Conclusion

Scatterguns have solidified their iconic role in movies due to their bad-ass look and all-around visual appeal. It is also great when they fit a realistic role in the film and also demonstrates the tactical versatility and limitations to the platform.

Some are saying that the shotgun is making a comeback in recent years. Others say that its popularity never waned, so a “comeback” is hardly necessary. For nearly 150 years, shotguns have held a special place in the hearts of many shooters and hunters all over the world, and I feel this is doubly true for Americans. This post will explore the disappearing niche of bolt action shotguns, often considered to be a classic slice of 20th century Americana.

For some decades now, it seems we’ve all been enamored with the ever-expanding universe of the AR platform and all its derivatives. Obviously, I dig it too, and have written about it extensively.

It’s a great weapon system, it is adaptive and versatile, and it serves its purpose. I can see why shotguns have taken a back seat to the host of AR-style rifles which have been dominating the scene (yes, I know I’m exaggerating a bit).

With the proliferation of various competitions (3-gun and cowboy action shooting come to mind), shotguns are back in the game big time – even if it is your contention that they weren’t there beforehand.

More people than ever are getting into the spirit of shooting for pleasure. Incidentally, bolt action shotguns would not be allowed in cowboy action shooting competitions, since the rules of the event only permit use of weapons that are compatible with the era. Lever and pump shotguns are usually the ones that are used.

On a personal level, I feel these competitions are awesome. They emphasize the use of firearms within the context of a friendly and non-deadly sport. This is in complete contrast to viewing firearms as nothing but purveyors of evil and woe, and a constant point of national controversy.

I mean come on: dressing up in a 19th-century getup and competing in ‘Fastest Gun in the West’ activities? Frontier fun!

Alright, so let’s get into it. What’s the story behind bolt action shotguns?

Bolt Action Shotguns

As mentioned, this design came after the time of the mythological Old West. Join me now as we journey to the 1930s – the time of the Great Depression, Dust Bowl farmers, and celebrated engineer and firearms manufacturer Oscar Mossberg. In 1933, Mossberg designed, invented, and subsequently released the first prototype bolt action shotgun.

We’ll talk more about Mossberg later on in this article because the company he founded in 1919 has a place of honor among gun manufacturers by and large, and among shotgun manufacturers in particular.

The bolt action itself was already in the market for years, but it was being used as a rifle system more than anything else. In 1824, the first bolt action rifle appeared on the scene, but it was only a century or so before that mechanism was used to cycle shotgun shells. It is not the most sought-after action for a shotgun, it’s true. Some consider the bolt action shotgun to be a rarity at best, and an obsolete, dang-near-useless firearm at worst.

Between the 1940s and 1970s (or so), bolt action shotguns were fairly common. Many young shooters received a .410  bore or 20-gauge bolt action shotgun as a starter gun. Although I have to say, learning how to shoot while using such a firearm is probably more awkward than many other choices.

Bolt action shotguns often required more skill to handle and they came with no bells and whistles, but they could be counted on as a serious piece of hardware.

Plus, the price of a bolt action shotgun was cheaper, making it a go-to for those who didn’t have much to spend, or who simply wanted something to keep behind the door for the purposes of security and safety.

Manual actions tend to be cheaper and more reliable, whether we’re talking about a pump, a lever, or a bolt – and even lovers of semi-auto actions will agree there are instances where a manually-operated shotgun is preferred to a semi-automatic one.

That said, semi-automatic shotguns are becoming more reliable with each passing SHOT Show, or so it seems, and they are quickly closing that gap (if any still exists). Granted, you could have a high-quality semi-auto which seriously outperforms a low-quality manual action in terms of reliability, so the simple fact that it is a manual action is no guarantee for superiority.

In the course of shotgun history, there have been some popular bolt action guns, though most of them have since been discontinued. These include models by Browning, J.C. Higgins, Marlin, Mossberg, Stevens, Western Field, and more. Some of those companies or brands aren’t even around anymore, but you can still find their firearms for sale at various gun shows and auction sites.

In recent years, Savage Arms brought the bolt action shotgun back from the dead, sort of, with its 212 and 220 series. These are two groups of 12- and 20-gauge bolt action shotguns, which until now were only available for purchase by special order directly from the manufacturer.

In the spring of 2019, however, the company decided to change things around: they made the series more widely and readily available, and let any Savage Arms dealer place an order for the benefit of customers all over the country. 

The bolt shotguns of yore may be considered archaic, but there are companies which still produce firearms in that configuration.

As previously mentioned, this caliber (alongside the .410 bore) was in high circulation. People were training their kids with those gauges, though according to some of the anecdotes floating around, learning on such a firearm was a real pain in the butt. I actually started off with AR-type rifles and handguns and didn’t fire a shotgun until I was a bit older.

When they began toying with the idea of a bolt action shotgun, Savage Arms wanted to provide the public with a shotgun that closely resembles a rifle platform. Something shooters would be able to get behind without much of an adjustment.

410 Bolt Action Shotgun

The 410 bolt action shotgun remains a firearm used – more than anything – for critter population control and hunting small game. Webley and Scott made them, Lee Enfield made them, and Montgomery Ward sold many variants made by different manufacturers. Just a few examples.

Nowadays, much like its brethren, it is fading away into history. The cheaper prices and more advanced technology made it so this type of a shotgun is no longer worth it.

Some say it is because people are lazy, but I disagree. There is more to it than mere laziness. No matter what purposes the .410 bolt action shotgun was marketed for, there are now different shotguns which can do it better.

Sticking to old ways sometimes has merit, and there is certainly plenty of nostalgia there – but you need to know when to give up and say that it just isn’t all it is cracked up to be.

Even when .410 bolt action shotguns were more popular, they were never at the top of anyone’s list, I think. They are considered more like a fad in firearm history. Obviously, some will say I am wrong and cite many models which were produced and successfully distributed all over the country.

Okay, nothing wrong with that. But consider that even Savage aren’t making a .410 anymore, and they just released two new bolt action turkey guns!

Mossberg Bolt Action Shotgun

Mossberg is currently celebrating its centennial! Founded in 1919 by Oscar Frederick Mossberg, this company is the oldest family-owned firearms manufacturer in the U.S.

In 1933, the Mossberg model 10 was introduced. It was a single-shot bolt action shotgun. The Mossberg 695 was the last of the Mossberg bolt action shotguns, and it was discontinued in 2003 after being manufactured in the 1990s.

In between the model 10 and model 695, exists an entire catalog of bolt action shotguns. For 70 years, Mossberg produced and sold some of the best and most popular bolt action shotguns in the world.

Some of Mossberg’s most successful models were manufactured after the Second World War. In 1974 they stopped making 16-gauge guns but were still into making 12g, 20g, and .410 models through the 1980s. Some of these bolt guns had Mossberg’s C-Lect-Choke configuration, which allowed for different chokes to be utilized with the simple act twisting the muzzle.

With relatively few moving parts, these shotguns were known for their durability. Even though the bolt action shotguns were overshadowed by the newer and more advanced models later on, and even though Mossberg no longer makes these models, AND even though there are those who claim these guns are junk to begin with – there are plenty of shooters out there who remember them, think fondly of them, and even shoot them!

But make no mistake, there is no shortage of such shotguns beings locked away for decades in some gun safe or attic, waiting to be discovered by an unsuspecting family member.

No manufacturer is without error, but overall this is a company which is fairly synonymous with quality and affordability. This is still true, even if the action these shotguns are utilizing isn’t too popular. It simply comes down to whether or not you want to own an older Mossberg with a unique action.

And by the way, these aren’t exactly the hottest collector’s item – and that is an understatement – so I wouldn’t bank on acquiring wealth or getting to that coveted early retirement just by flipping bolt action Mossberg shotguns.

Conclusion 

While the bolt action is admittedly not the most popular action when it comes to shotguns, it still has its place. Depending on your purpose – and your expertise with the weapon – a bolt action shotgun could very well be what pushes you outside of that comfort zone and confronts you with new and exciting challenges. These will undoubtedly sharpen your skills and enhance your abilities, if you are interested in doing so.

Compared to other mechanisms, the bolt action shotgun seems superfluous. This is probably the reason why we are seeing little of it these days. People are more interested in pulling the trigger and having the firearm cycle on its own. That’s convenient, but it might come with that all-important caveat – reliability.

Bolt action shotguns are not popular, to say the least, and some people don’t even know they exist. But they do, and there are those who still take pleasure in firing them. They are by no means better than anything which exists in today’s market – or so I feel – but still, there is something about them. Some old-world feeling. It’s a modern-nostalgic firearm.

If you decide to get yourself a bolt action shotgun and use it, consider making it one of the newer models. Parts and accessories for the older models are disappearing rapidly. Although, those older Mossbergs (and their variants) are going for $100-150 or so, and some of them are in good shape. That’s a pretty good deal, providing that you have a way to keep it in good working condition and that you know what to expect from it. There is something so satisfying about feeling that bolt travel as you cycle the weapon with your hand, but it has its limitations.

Once you really start getting the hang of trap shooting, you may want to think about entering a competition. Trap shooting competitions are a lot of fun, and they sometimes offer up some pretty lucrative prizes. As a novice, though, you may feel a bit intimidated about joining a competition and not knowing what to expect. We’ve put together this trap shooter’s guide to help you prepare for your first competition. Keep reading to learn more!

How a Trap Competition Works

Let’s start with the basics. For the purposes of this article, we will be talking about American Trap singles, during which you have one chance to make each shot. A round of trap consists of 25 targets. Each person in a squad–typically consisting of five people–fires at five targets from five different shooting positions. Each person starts at a different position and takes a shot. Once everyone has taken their first shot, this is repeated four times so that each shooter shoots five times from their starting position.

Once the last person has fired their fifth shot, each shooter moves one position to the right with the shooter on the far right moving around into the first spot. This continues until each person has fired at five targets from each of the five positions.

A round of trap consists of 25 shots per person, but during a competition, you’ll typically be shooting 100 or 200 rounds. There are breaks in between rounds, and depending on the size of the event, you may shoot from multiple fields. Essentially, a competition consists of 200 one-shot competitions.

Trap Shooting Equipment

In basic singles trap, you can use just about any shotgun you prefer. You will want either a 20-gauge or 12-gauge, though, to ensure that you are firing enough shot downrange to break the target. You can use a pump action, semi-auto or over and under shotgun.

As long as it is capable of firing off one shot at a time, nearly any shotgun is suitable for this sport. An over and under gun is often the easiest option for beginners, but if you already have a pump action or a semi-auto that you love, feel free to use it! Using a gun that you are comfortable with will go a long way toward helping you perform well at the event.

Trap Shooting Etiquette

If you are thinking about entering a trap shooting competition, proper etiquette may be the furthest thing from your mind. It is incredibly important, though, and it’s often one of the most intimidating and challenging aspects of competition shooting. There are all sorts of unwritten rules about how you should behave during a competition, and if you aren’t familiar with them, you could inadvertently make a mistake or offend someone.

For starters, following proper gun safety protocol is always a must. Don’t load your gun until it is your turn to shoot, keep your weapon pointed downrange and never fire when someone is on the range. And no matter how frustrated you get after a bad shot, do not throw your firearm downrange in a fit of rage! When everyone follows proper safety protocol and uses common sense, it is possible to avoid potentially deadly accidents.

You’ll also want to make sure you are a good neighbor during the competition. When it’s getting close to your turn, be mindful of the shooter to your left. Don’t make any noise when that person is about to shoot. Avoid working your gun action so you don’t distract them. If you are using a semi-automatic shotgun, buy a shell catcher. Shell catchers are inexpensive and they prevent your empty shells from being flung out toward the shooter on your right. When using a pump action, be gentle to avoid flinging your empty.

When you are not in the shooting position, your firearm should be clear and unloaded. Keep the action open and the muzzle pointed at the ground or the sky unless the organizers of the competition tell you to do something different.

Make sure you are prepared when stepping up to the shooting line to begin a round. You should have a full box of shells (plus a few spares) and hearing and eye protection. If you are unprepared, you can slow down the entire competition, and doing so is not a good way to make friends.

Trap Shooting Dress

Find out if there is a dress code prior to the event. If there isn’t, plan on wearing closed-toed shoes, jeans or long shorts and a decent shirt. Most clubs don’t allow things like sleeveless tees for safety reasons. A shooting shirt is always a good option. You may want to consider wearing a polyester sweat-wicking shirt as a base layer to help you stay cool and dry throughout the competition. If it’s chilly, it’s a good idea to wear a windproof jacket, too.

Conclusion

Trap shooting is a lot of fun, and joining a competition is a great way to get out and do something you love. With the information listed above, you can prepare yourself for your first competition and avoid making any potentially dangerous or embarrassing mistakes. One of the more widely-known Russian-made shotguns – alongside the Saiga 12 by Izhmash – is the VEPR 12 (pronounced vepper), manufactured by Molot Firearms. It is a 12-gauge, semi-auto, mag-fed shotgun, similar to the Soviet RPK light machine gun, but with more “meat” on it.

Shotguns, boys and girls… say what you want about the proliferation of rifles and EDC handguns – some situations still call for a solid 12 gauge. I think we each have our own idea as to what those situations might be, obviously. It could be a competitive event, a misty morning hunt, fun at the range, or a cure for something – or someone – that goes bump in the night.

VEPR 12 Background

Molot Firearms, which produces the VEPR 12, is officially titled “Vyatskie Polyany Machine-Building Plant Molot”. It is a Russian company which was established in 1940, and is a subsidiary of Rostec, which deals in defense and high-tech within the Russian Federation. The VEPR 12 has been in production since 2003.

Molot is known for its shotguns and rifles, but it is also famous for manufacturing and supplying the Red Army with the PPSH-41 submachine gun, during WWII. There were approximately 6,000,000 of those units built. Though Molot was not the only one manufacturing them at the time, I think it produced the bulk of them.

Fun fact: in the 1950s, Molot manufactured a Vespa-esque scooter, and it continued to remain in production until the 1970s. Imagine wielding a heavy-duty shotgun while riding on a Vespa. Very Eastern Europe, don’t you think?

Nowadays, the company is dealing with some messy bankruptcy proceedings. For the time being, production of firearms seems to be stalled.

There is no telling where exactly this will go, but even if Molot was back on its feet today, you would not be able to purchase a brand new VEPR 12 if you are in the U.S.

In 2017, Molot was added to the list of banned Russian and Ukranian imports, due to ongoing sanctions imposed by the U.S. Treasury Department. Until the ban went into effect, Molot weapons were being imported by the US-based Firearms Importer Manufacturer Exporter (FIME group), operating out of Las Vegas.

VEPR 12 Specs

The VEPR 12 is essentially modeled after the RPK. As such, it is a shotgun which may be useful in hunting, 3-gun, and home/self-defense. I want to stress the word “may”, because there are probably better options for each of those categories.

There are several variants of the VEPR 12, and here are the specs for its short-barreled model:

• Model: VEPR 12 Short-Barreled Shotgun (SBS)
• Action: Magazine-fed, semi-automatic
• Caliber: 12 gauge, 3” chamber
• Length: 34”
• Barrel length: 12”
• Weight: 9.3 lbs
• Capacity: 5 or 8 (Standard) and higher (extended)
• MSRP: $1,699 ( The other variants carry a MSRP of $1,199)

The VEPR 12 comes with Picatinny railing on top of its dust cover, and there is also the option of adding some rail on the bottom part of the hand guard. Fixed or folding stock options are available. The barrel can be fitted with a suppressor.

Because this weapon’s mechanism utilizes a self-regulated (read: non-adjustable) gas system, it is more receptive towards different types of 12 gauge ammo.

Sure, there will be rounds which will cycle more successfully and consecutively than others, but in general this thing can fire a multitude of shells with little to no issues. Just be mindful of the fact that the VEPR was not made for lighter loads (though it may still cycle them).

There is only so much you can ask from a weapon, and I feel one cannot expect this shotgun to perform under conditions for which it was not designed in the first place. Although, you could argue that for the hefty price you pay, perhaps it should be able to fire every single thing you put in.

Another thing to consider is the length of the barrel. If it is a longer barrel, it is probably less prone to issues, and therefore there is an increased chance of the shotgun cycling properly.

More often than not, it is the shorter barrels which will cause trouble or be finicky about the type of ammo they accept.

A nice touch which Molot added to this model is the ‘open bolt on last round’ feature. Not every AK-ish weapon possess this quality, and it certainly is handy. Combined with the fact that the magazines are inserted in a fashion resembling that of an AR-15, it makes reloading that much easier and more intuitive.

VEPR 12 Accessories

As with any firearm, some accessories are more useful or needed than others. Popular aftermarket products for the VEPR 12 include a bi-pod, stocks (folding/collapsible), butt pad, cheek rest, foregrip, chokes, magwell, and more. Also, there is the wide world of red dots, beads, and scopes.

Are you going to need any of these? It’s a judgement call.

Remember that this weapon is already on the heavy side. These AK-platform designs are usually not too light, but what you get in return for the weight is increased durability and high versatility – two attributes which may prove to be crucial for you.

It all comes down to the intended use.

Keep in mind that because of the ban which is in place, there is a chance that accessories geared towards the VEPR will become more scarce over time, not unlike the weapon itself.

If you want an accessory that was designed and built for a VEPR 12 shotgun, you should probably get a move on.

Accessories which fit the model can still be found online, but I wouldn’t know about local gun shops because of the ban.

VEPR 12 Magazine

The standard factory mags are of the 5- or 8-round variety, and aftermarket magazines can go as high as 12. After that you have the drum options, which we will get into next.

Now, if you plan on using this shotgun strictly for home defense, you may find that you do not need more than 5 rounds. Nevertheless, there are those people will always want a higher capacity magazine, no matter what.

Understandable.

Preparedness is key, and I get it: you’d rather have more than less.

Remember to check your local and federal rulebooks, people. You don’t want to end up with the Feds all up in your business, simply because you forgot to equip yourself with a proper magazine. Not worth the hassle, not by a long shot!

Quick note: Saiga 12 magazines will usually work with a VEPR 12, but VEPR 12 magazines will NOT work with a Saiga 12. FYI.

VEPR 12 Drum

Speaking from a purely practical point of view, what on earth would you need a 25-round drum for? Well, for one thing, it looks like a lot of fun. There are definitely other reasons which I am overlooking, but the enjoyment factor is nothing to sneeze at.

I know from my limited experience with drum mags that firing many rounds consecutively can be all kinds of fun, and also highly therapeutic!

Take all your aggression out on those targets, I say.

SGM Tactical offer a 25-round drum for the VEPR 12, MSRP $99. Reviews of this drum, and SGM at large, have been kind of “iffy”.

Other manufacturers offer 20-round drums for the Saiga 12, which should also work with the VEPR 12. Make sure that’s still the case before purchasing, though.

VEPR 12 Muzzle Brake

Shotguns and muzzle brakes are a match made in firearm heaven. The ability to reduce recoil allows you to get back on target quickly, and more accurately place those follow-up shots.

With a 12-gauge like this – and with many other shotguns, for that matter – a muzzle brake is definitely useful. It comes down to price, really, since just about everyone agrees that recoil management may be a necessity for some shooters.

The price for a VEPR-fitting muzzle brake is something between $45-150 or so. Not all brakes are created equally, so some of them are not fit for use with slugs. The manufacturer will usually specify whether or not that is the case.

Also, muzzle brakes for the VEPR 12 will usually also fit the Saiga 12, and vice versa, but as they say “buyer, beware”.

Some of the more popular brakes out on the market are:

• V6 – VEPR 12
• SGM Tactical – Sabre Boss
• Legion – GK-01 & GK-02
• Tromix – Shark Brake
• CSS – Dominator

At the time of writing this review, some of these are out of stock (online, anyway). The price of VEPR 12 accessories will undoubtedly shift in accordance with the legal status of the weapon and its prevalence, so posting specific MSRPs is not too practical.

Conclusion

This shotgun works, and it works well.

However, it is not for beginners (for lack of a better term). I say that not to sound all high and mighty, but simply because it is not your ordinary, everyday shotgun. It looks like an AK variant, it has controls similar to an AK, and it has the bulk and feel of an AK.

It may not fit a person who is new to shotguns, because in some ways it is not your typical shotgun, despite its 12-gauge 3” chamber.

Like I said before – I personally feel there are better options out there than the VEPR. Better hunting, target, or competition shotguns.

But again, it all depends on your intended use. Also, you cannot ignore the price, which will probably keep climbing due to the weapon’s scarcity in the U.S., and its possible end-of-production in general.

That right there is something to think about, since the prices may skyrocket over time.

It’s a fine shotgun, don’t get me wrong, but it is not worth any and every price you may see attached to it.

That said – if the price is no object, and if you fancy it (obviously), there is no reason not to own one. You get quality materials, fine Russian craftsmanship, and possibly a soon-to-be “vintage” status!

Fun fact #2: VEPR is actually not an abbreviation of anything. It simply means “wild boar” in Russian/Ukranian. The more you know…

Benelli, Remington, Mossberg, and others – they make quality shotguns. I personally have had an affinity for them. Naturally, not every shotgun is one to write home about, but some out there do deserve more focus. You can call this a 835 Ulti-Mag appreciation post.

But before we get into the 835 series, let’s see what else Connecticut-based Mossberg has been up to lately.

New Year, New Mossberg

2019 marks Mossberg’s centennial. An entire century has gone by since O.F. Mossberg & Sons first set up shop in March of 1919. Over the last 100 years, Mossberg has done a fine job of solidifying its place in the top echelon of American gunmakers and making a name for itself all over the globe.

People know you can trust a Mossy.

The company has a lot planned for the final year of the 2010s, and they unveiled some new models, as well as new variants of existing models at the recent SHOT Show.

At the official Mossberg website, nearly 70 models are marked “New For 2019” in their New Products section. Some of these models have not arrived at retailers yet, but according to the company’s press releases, they are slated to make an appearance soon enough.

The piece that caught many peoples’ attention at SHOT Show was the MC1sc – a subcompact 9mm pistol. This weapon harks back to the first weapon Mossberg ever designed: the highly concealable, .22 caliber, 4-shot pocket-pistol they named ‘Brownie’.

The company is currently offering 5 models of the MC1sc: standard, cross-bolt safety, TRUGLO, Viridian laser, and a commemorative centennial model (limited to 1,000 units). MSRP $412 – 686.

New versions of the ever-popular 500 model are also being made available for 2019: the ATI Tactical, Field/Deer Combo, Retrograde, and Turkey. MSRP hovers around $500. The Mossberg 500 still remains one of their most popular items, 60 years after it was introduced.

The 590 model is also getting some new models added to its list, with the Thunder Ranch, Nightstick, several Shockwave variants, and a Retrograde model of the 590A1. MSRP of the former models is between $500-600, but the 590A1 is priced at $902.

There are also new FLEX models, new International 702 and 802 models, new Patriot models, and new MVP models. The amount of models and variants which Mossberg introduces each year is something to behold.

They care a great deal about keeping up with what it is that people are in the market for, and they tailor their new releases accordingly. It seems to be working out for them because they have the market’s seal of approval.

Not every company could pull that off.

And since this is a 835-centered post, I will mention the two new arrivals for this model: the Tactical Turkey (MSRP $652), and the Combo Field/Deer (MSRP $493).

Mossberg 835

The Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag was originally designed as a waterfowl shotgun, but it remains an all-purpose, 12-gauge, pump-action shotgun, which is pretty much up for whatever task you assign to it.

This shotgun is capable of accepting 2¾, 3, and 3½-inch shells, and it delivers. The 835’s build is very reminiscent of the 500 model, and the controls are also quite similar.

The stock and frame are made from synthetic materials, the receiver is high-grade aluminum, the bolt is steel. The mechanism is a manual pump action, so you are in full control of what’s going on.

Gas guns have their place, but the ability to manually cycle the weapon has its advantages.

It is important to note that the 835’s barrel is over-bored, which has several benefits and one clear drawback.

On the one hand, it means you will probably be able to feel less recoil. It also means that the 835 can handle 3½-inch shells with virtually no issues or failures.

If you are shooting heavy-duty magnum loads, this thing can take it. It’s what it was built for.

On the other hand, you are not able to shoot slugs with the barrel, so you will have to invest in an additional barrel (if that’s your thing).

Shooting 12 gauge slugs from an over-bored shotgun can cause damage to the integrity of the shot AND of the shooter, and it is not recommended to fire slugs from the 835 without the appropriate barrel change.

• Chamber: 3.5 inches
• Length: 46.75 inches
• Barrel length: 26 inches
• Weight: 7.5 lbs
• Capacity: 5+1 (lower capacity with 3½ shells)

Mossberg 835 Ulti Mag

The ability to chamber more shells is something which many hunters (and home defenders) desire. The higher capacity of a shotgun does not guarantee its quality, of course, but it is still a very important variable for some.

It can play a serious role in whether or not the shotgun will be purchased.

Magazine tube extensions of different kinds are available for the 835 Ulti-mag, and they can increase your round count to 10. That is a significant increase, by any standard, and it essentially means halving your reloads.

Reducing time reloading can be crucial in some cases, though not always necessary. If you are only going to be shooting turkeys with this thing, then perhaps an extension is not something you should worry yourself with. Turkeys will usually allow a shooter to reload.

But if you have other game on your mind – or if you plan to use the 835 for home defense – then getting an extension on your 835 is a fine idea. Choate makes 7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-shot extension tubes for the 835, but keep a few things in mind: anything you add to this shotgun is also going to add weight and – more importantly – pressure.

Anything past a +1 extension increases the risk of issues popping up. Also, you will not be able to use the longer extensions with the shorter barrels. It’s an ‘either/or’ situation.

Another thing to consider is this: if you want to increase your potential round count without investing in an extension, you can buy a saddle or side-saddle and load them up. It is probably the closest thing to an actual extension, since it makes the shells readily available (albeit not inside the tube). This will make the shells handy, but not place extra pressure on the magazine tube.

Adding pressure to the original tube via magazine extension means you need to use a bracket or clamp. By doing this, you are basically adding another part which has the potential to cause problems. The less parts you have on a firearm, the less chance there is of something failing on you.

Mossberg 835 Price

The MSRP of the different 835 variants is currently between $444-652. These are available everywhere, from online retailers to your local gun shop. In some cases, the cheaper variants can be found for under $400. Now that is a steal!

Some shotguns will set you back over $1,000, and others can come close to $2,000 or more. I am not saying that these guns are not worth the price, but I am saying that not everyone requires such a weapon.

If you are a competitive shooter, it makes more sense.

If you are a weekend hunter, you don’t necessarily need one of those, and a $500-600 shotgun should be able to serve you very well.

The 835 and its variants are all perfectly legal, though you will have to adhere to federal regulations and local hunting laws. These may change with the seasons (or Presidential elections!), so be sure to consult the proper documents and authorities.

You don’t want a game warden or park ranger slapping you with a fine, confiscating your shotgun, or confiscating your game. Never happened to me, thankfully, but I have a feeling that it’s a great way to ruin a weekend.

Conclusion

For over 30 years, the Mossberg 835 has been serving the hunting and shooting public. It is a quality shotgun at a decent price, chambered with a large bore which increases its versatility, and it has the Mossberg 10-year warranty to back it up. Put this all together, and you get a fine choice.

There is this ongoing debate titled Remington VS Mossberg. I have never really seen the point of such debates… I mean, if these shotguns are so similar – and they can be – then leave it at that. Obviously, preference will depend on many factors beyond those which are written in the spec sheet and documentation.

The Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag pump shotgun is still one of the finest turkey guns out there. The chokes provided with the shotgun (varies by model) will give you everything you need for a great hunting session. And if you require something else – e.g. slug barrel – there are plenty of aftermarket products to choose from. Mossberg’s store has everything from slings and bandoliers to shell carriers, sights, and tools.

The AR platform is still immensely popular. There are many weapons designers and manufacturers who apply the system’s look and feel to their own rifles and shotguns, because of the its prevalence. The VR80 semi-automatic shotgun by Rock Island Armory definitely fits that bill.

A semi-auto shotgun, especially one which is box-fed, is – more often than not – versatile and highly manageable. VR80 Build

The first thing you probably notice about this shotgun, aside from the striking AR look, is the way this piece of weaponry is built. It is solid and highly dependable in its construction, and you can feel that when you handle it. Obviously, there can be some kind of a production line defect, but overall the VR series is considered to be well-made and reliable.

Rock Island’s VR80 is a 12 gauge, semi-auto, magazine-fed shotgun. The build is mainly 7075 T6 aluminum (the receivers and handguard, for example), with some polymer thrown in (mainly in the stock). The stock has a rubber buttpad, and the grip and stock are connected to form a thumbhole stock.

This weapon comes with flip-up sights – which are not bad at all for closer encounters – situated on a 1913 Picatinny (M-Lok compatible) rail. Other build features include a reversible charging handle, ambidextrous mag release button, and a ‘black chrome’ finish on the whole thing.

This weapon operates using a gas system (as opposed to a recoil-operated system). Gas systems have more moving parts, and this can make them a bit heavier and less reliable – but the weight helps to distribute energy and reduce recoil, and the materials used in the manufacturing of this particular gas-operated system are exceedingly  functional.

Furthermore, you get the advantage of a system which is better-suited for heavier loads. More suited than recoil ones, anyway. Two different gas pistons are provided with the shotgun, which accommodate lighter/heavier loads.

The VR80 comes with a 5-round mag (9-round mags, or more, will be made available as an aftermarket item). Three chokes are provided with the VR80: modified choke, full choke, and cylinder bore choke. The barrel is shrouded, which doesn’t add much functionality but is nevertheless very pleasing to the eye. Though some may consider it useless, aesthetics goes a long way!

Rock Island Armory imports these shotguns from Turkey, a country which has a fairly respectable reputation among firearms dealers and importers around the world. Derya Arms manufactures the VR80, a successor to its popular VR60 model. The older shotguns in the series resembled the AR platform as well, but to a lesser degree.

Derya, which specializes in shotguns, was established in the late 90s in the Turkish province of Konya. The company is known for its use of quality materials, and for its adherence to some of the strictest industry standards around. Rock Island Armory currently has exclusivity on the VR80, but the older models are available for purchase through many shops and websites.

VR80 Performance

I have difficulties using the term “break-in period”, because these words can be severely misinterpreted, or worse – they can be used as a way to cover up bad design or craftsmanship. From what I have seen, this shotgun really does require some kind of break-in period. I have no formula to provide you with, unfortunately, but I say this for those who may be discouraged when they first handle the gun and label it a dud.

This shotgun is a pleasure to shoot. Its ease of use makes it a viable option for home defense purposes, even with its decreased ammo count (compared, say, to a Glock or actual AR-15). It manages to cycle all kinds of brands, which is not a given.

Again, there is a chance that you will have to break this shotgun in before it accepts certain brands of ammunition. From what I have seen, the VR80 is consistent and knows how to deliver, but that is not everyone’s initial experience.

I do have a complaint, though. The trigger. I do not care for it. Maybe it’s just me. Probably not. I am not a fancy-trigger-only person, not in the least, but I need a better trigger than the one they have on there. Too much weight on that trigger pull, in my opinion. I like it faster sometimes, and I speculate that those who are interested in using the VR80 in competitions will be the first to swap out that trigger. Time will tell.

Accessories

The ample amount of railing on the top, plus the forward rails at the 3-, 9-, and 12-o’clock positions – they provide a wide range of options and configurations. Those who want to add lights, optics, a scope – or anything else, really – will probably find the space more than adequate for any standard purposes and accessories.

Thanks to its AR-like build (right down to two takedown pins and a carbine buffer tube!), modifying the gun becomes fairly easy. Whether you are adding a new stock, grip, compensator, magazine well, etc., you’ll find that it is usually pretty intuitive and easy to accomplish.

Popular accessories are red dots and grips. Triggers are not yet available, but they are slated to appear later in 2019. I read somewhere that at least two companies at SHOT Show 2019 said they were planning on producing aftermarket triggers for the VR80. I hope that the aftermarket triggers are good ones, because it would seriously upgrade this system.

The VR80 is said to be available from mainstream retailers starting on the 1st of March. In some cases, it will probably be later than that. Either way, it is scheduled to make an appearance sometime during 2019.

As for the legality issue, there is a chance your state will not allow such systems. You will have to make sure that the VR80 is allowed in whatever configuration you are interested. Judging from history, the 5-round mag will be allowed in all states, but this may not be the case with the higher-capacity magazines.

Conclusion

A semi-auto shotgun is not for everyone. I feel it really is an acquire taste, because some may see it as a jack of all trades which is a master of none. The VR80 could be used for competitions, for home defense, and for target practice – but there is no denying that there are other options, some of them cheaper and more widely available.

The AR look and feel matters a lot, especially in a market which is so saturated with AR-like weapons and systems.

It comes down to your tastes and your needs. If the VR80 sounds like something you could go for, you should get in touch with a range or retailer and grab hold of one. Some ranges will allow you to test-fire a weapon. If that is an option, don’t hesitate to do it. If nothing else, you will get a chance to fire one of the more advanced semi-auto shotgun the industry has to offer.

Survival weapons are built around the idea of making the most out of a relatively small or minimalistic package. Survival has everything to do with the bare necessities of human existence – shelter, water, food, and self-defense.

Some guns were designed to act as an all-in-one type of weapon, and the M6 X-Caliber by Chiappa Firearms is certainly one of them. Right off the bat, something sounds off. A firearm that is an all-in-one? Doesn’t sound too amazing, really. As they say, a jack of all trades is a master of none. Well, these guns are not meant to be amazing. They are simply meant to save your bacon.

Chiappa Firearms

Chiappa (pronounced kee-appa) traces its roots back to 1958, when Ezechiele Chiappa established the Armi Sport de Chiappa workshop, in Italy. Over the 60 years of its existence, the company has grown exponentially, and has branched out to other fields and territories. Mr. Chiappa had vision, that’s for sure, and this is part of why Chiappa Firearms is still family-owned and doing good business. Like many firearms manufacturers, it has had its share of ups and down, discontinued models, and consumer criticism.

Nowadays, Chiappa includes several divisions, and its headquarters can be found in northern Italy. The Chiappa group includes Chiappa Firearms S.r.l. and its U.S.-based Chiappa Firearms distribution center (located in Dayton, OH); KIMAR, which manufactures small arms, blanks, and signal guns; ACP, which produces laser training systems, primarily for law enforcement and military personnel; and Costa S.r.l., which is dedicated to the treatment of various metals. As of 2017 (if I am not mistaken), Chiappa’s U.S. facility also exclusively distributes Charles Daly systems. However, most shooters know them for their unique Rhino Revolver Series.

I actually wanted to learn more about Costa and its metal treatment methods, so I can share the knowledge with you, but didn’t really find anything online. The ACP training system website is also under renovation. I suppose we will have to get to those another time.

Survival Rifles

As mentioned earlier, the guiding principle behind the term “survival” is quite simple: getting out alive. It is about acquiring certain skills necessary for basic human survival.

To be clear, this isn’t some end-of-the-world, zombie-apocalypse, pirate-vampires-are-coming thing. It is as real as anything you could imagine or encounter in everyday life, except you usually wouldn’t encounter such things. But preparedness is key. The truth is, you never know what will happen.

The initial thought behind creating survival rifles was also pretty simple: the U.S. Air Force wished to provide downed aircraft crewmembers with the means of protecting themselves and providing for themselves, until such time as they are out of danger and back on friendly soil. And not just aircraft crew, but anyone who may lose contact and find themselves cut off and in hostile territory.

Over the years, military survival rifles have been produced, used, and discontinued. Famous models of survival rifles include the AR-5 (classified as MA-1, but never used), the USAF M4, and the USAF M6. Some survival rifles are more utilitarian than others. Some are a combination rifle/shotgun (like the X-Caliber).

On the civilian end, you have the option of building your own makeshift slamfire-action bug-out-bag shotgun for under $50, if you want. I only mention that since Royal Nonesuch did it on YouTube. His channel was terminated by YouTube when their policies changed, but this clip is still around and so is he. Honestly, I feel uneasy about some of the things he’s done on video, safety-wise. But hey, the guy knows what he’s doing, and his guns are certainly unique.

The more popular civilians models have been the Henry Repeating Arms’ AR-7 and the Springfield Armory M6 Scout – both of which are replicas of their military counterparts. A new model joined the ranks about a decade ago: the M6 X-Caliber, by Chiappa Firearms.

Chiappa X Caliber

Chiappa introduced its M6 X-Caliber model in 2010. This combi gun is modeled after the M6 Aircrew Survival Weapon, a rifle which was designed and manufactured by Ithaca and Springfield armories, and which remained in service of the USAF since the early 1950’s through the 1970’s, before it was replaced by the AR-7.

The X-caliber is capable of firing 12 different calibers, and is one of the most popular bug-out-bag rifles out there. It is a double-trigger over/under weapon, featuring a 3”, 12-gauge shotgun on top, and a 22LR rifle 18.5” barrel under it. It is highly compact, more so when folded, and it has an overall length of 34.5”. The X-caliber weighs 5.6 lbs, making it easy to carry and handle.

The one deterring factor about this weapon is probably the price, which is currently $729 (MSRP). You can find it at lower prices online and in gun shops, so keep your eye out for any deals and bargains.

The ability to fire a multitude of calibers makes this a gun ready for a wide range of scenarios and conditions. Whether it is hunting, self-defense, or anything in between, the X-caliber can provide you with the tools for the job. The action is of the break-open variety, and with practice it can prove to be a powerful weapon, indeed.

With a fiber optic front sight and an adjustable rear sight, it is relatively accurate and on-point. The rails provide the option of adding accessories and optics, which can be quite useful, to say the least. Some would call it an “ugly” gun, but even they would agree that when in need, appearance hardly matters. A combo gun such as this, especially with a 1+1 capacity (which is admittedly low), will not appeal to everyone’s tastes, but it is a highly-functional piece of weaponry nonetheless.

Conclusion

Survival rifles are probably not for your everyday shooter. It’s not the type of weapon you would be carrying as an EDC. In a pinch, it could provide you with an advantage, and this is why it was designed in the first place for high-risk military personnel. Under difficult conditions, it could prove to be one of your greatest allies.

Not many firearms manufacturers produce survival weapons. They may call them survival weapons, but in many cases it is more of a marketing-related term. Not the X-caliber, though. It is a bonafide ass-saver, and is based on the successful M6 rifle.

You never know what will happen when your ‘fight or flight’ instinct kicks in. The rush of adrenaline, the uncertainty of your condition, and even the terrain – these can all be factors which will determine your ability to survive. Those who were given these rifles were usually highly-trained individuals who were well-versed in the various arts of survival, concealment, and warfare. Survival guns may not mean much in your everyday scenarios, but when the chips are down, they could mean the difference between life and death.
