While making headlines may seem impressive, I find that these things should always be taken with a grain of salt, at least. Therefore, I got my hands on one of these nifty little pistols to see if the hype was well-deserved.

Springfield Armory Hellcat

On the surface, the Springfield Hellcat pistol looks like many other polymer pistols in its class. If anything, its appearance looked kind of busy in that the controls were more pronounced that one might expect from a “revolutionary” micro-compact pistol. Nonetheless, it felt pretty good in my hands and the controls were intuitive and user-friendly, plus practically everything felt textured making it easy to handle.  

Springfield Armory already has a good reputation for the firearms, including their SAINT AR-15, XD Series, and 911 pistols so I had high expectations for their new series. Springfield was marketing it to be filled with many “exciting new features” such as an adaptive grip texture, high visibility sights, and a patented magazine. Altogether, the new Hellcat pistol series was designed to be the ultimate carry gun and my first impression was great.

Even the small things can make a big difference and Springfield Armory certainly took that into account. For instance, knowing that the smaller grip can be harder to handle for people with big hands, they added a great beavertail for support. Additionally, the Hellcat features a flat trigger body with a noticeably crisp pull, a reversible mag release, deep slide serrations, a standard front accessory rail, and a loaded chamber indicator.

At the range, there was slightly more muzzle rise than I was expecting since I was comparing it in my head to the Sig P365 Glock 43x and Smith & Wesson M&P Performance Center Shield 2.0. Now, it didn’t have bad handling, but I was expecting just a bit better control. Nevertheless, follow-up shots are still surprisingly easy as are shots straight from a holster draw. Plus, the tritium U-dot sight system was absolutely excellent for defensive and tactical shooting.

One of the major developments SA announced with this new handgun was the addition of some new advanced grip system. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like the grips were anything special, but they were definitely above average for similarly priced polymer pistols. They made it seem like it was gonna be a game-changer, but I was underwhelmed after trying them out. In fact, I ended up just adding a layer or so of Talon grip tape just to make it fit my hand better.

Springfield Hellcat Holster

Springfield currently markets one holster for the Hellcat and it’s a pretty fair holster for daily carrying. They offer the Crossbreed Reckoning IWB Holster for $69.95 with multiple points of retention adjustment. The Crossbreed holster can be worn on the cross draw, appendix, or strong-side positions. It has a solid reputation for comfort and functionality and will soon be able to attach a mag carrier. However, Aliengear Holsters makes several great options for the Hellcat and their products are almost always top-notch.

Springfield Hellcat OSP

The Hellcat OSP (Optical Sight Pistol) is essentially the same as the popular Hellcat model with the addition of a seamless cover plate for attaching optics. For only $30 more, you get the same pistol but optics ready, perfecting for adding a red dot. It’s a worthwhile purchase if you like the Hellcat and think you might ever want to add a sight. SA recommends opting for the JP Enterprises JPoint or Shield RMSc, but there are plenty of red dots out there to choose from.

Springfield Hellcat vs P365

The Sig Sauer P365made headlines for many reasons, one which was being able to handle 10 rounds in a flush magazine. Then came along the Springfield Armory Hellcat delivering 11-round capacity in a flush magazine. They also offer an 11+1 with pinky extension and a 13+1 extended mag for those looking for more rounds. However, the P365 also comes with two additional mags including 12 and 15 round magazines.

These two new popular polymer pistols are remarkably similar in many respects, including size, weight, feel, and features. The most notable difference is the extra round in the flush magazine in the SA Hellcat. Nevertheless, many people will notice that the Springfield has a slightly heftier grip. It may feel better in your hands especially being a smaller handgun. The Sig is known for having a pretty good trigger but I wouldn’t say it’s that much better than the Springfield.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the Springfield Hellcat is an impressive firearm and can be a great choice for home defense and daily carry. It is definitely small which will turn some folks away, but they are on par with some of the top micro-compact pistols on the market. Some might like it as a backup gun while some may never tough a Springfield gun, but the Hellcat shows that we are moving in the right direction in firearm technology.

There is no issue with the 911’s legality in any state. The magazine capacity is legal even under the strictest states’ laws. The 380ACP and 9mm are very popular rounds and are always available even with the most severe ammunition shortages. 

Conclusion

Springfield’s fantastic reputation as a firearms manufacturer is sustained by the Springfield 911. When it comes to picking the right weapon for concealed carry and self-defense there is no right answer. Each individual needs to find a platform that fits their needs, hand size, and is comfortable for them to carry and shoot. The SA 911 is a great option for those shooters who are used to a standard pistol size, but do not want to carry around a full size 1911 on their hip.

Say, is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Carrying a firearm in concealment is very common. One of the most popular and effective ways of carrying a concealed weapon (CCW), is with the use of a pocket pistol. These are primarily lightweight weapons, they come in different sizes and calibers, and are so named because most of them can literally fit in your pocket.

Interestingly enough, for many years CCW was outlawed in the US. In the later-20th century, things started to change, however, and nowadays many states will allow it alongside open carry.

Keep in mind that states still vary with regards to their local policies and any implementation of the relevant legislation, aka ‘May Issue’ or ‘Shall  Issue’ states.

Legal pocket carry allows you to conceal a weapon easily, and then to engage at the drop of a hat should the need arise. One second you’re a regular Joe with your hands in your pockets, and the next you’re going pew-pew-pew – that’s the idea behind pocket guns.

Whether as a main defense or a backup weapon, they are useful and effective for many scenarios. The following is an unranked list of what we consider to be the best pocket pistols around.

Bond Arms Snake Slayer

Bond has been in business for 25 years now, and small derringer-style guns are their specialty. The Snake Slayer (SS) is something of a polarizing gun, in my experience anyway. It was first released a decade ago, in 2009, and it re-introduced the idea of sacrificing lower capacity for bore-size and modularity. Hence the polarization.

Like many other Bond Arms guns, the Snake Slayer is indeed modular. It accepts barrels and calibers of all kinds, providing they were designed for use with the SS. As a self-defense CCW and/or a home defense gun, it is a neat subcompact shooter which occupies the pocket holsters of many American shooters.

Featuring extended rosewood grips and fixed sights, it is a gun which requires a user to train and get used to it. It may not come to you as easily as other firearms.

I can’t say if there is an “ideal” user for this gun, really, but seeing as how it is labeled a slayer of snakes, I am going to say that outdoors-loving people (hikers, campers, and hunters come to mind) will certainly find uses for it. The low capacity is indeed a factor, but it is a solid quality item designed for a quick response when the chips are down.

The Snake Slayer IV (SSIV) is the newer model. It is basically the same as the SS with one key difference: a longer, 4.25” barrel. The longer barrel offers some benefits, like a tighter spread, higher bullet velocity, and reduced recoil. MSRP of the SSIV is $648.

NAA 22 Mag

North American Arms (NAA) is a company which found its niche with pocket guns and miniature revolvers. Their 22 Magnum revolver series includes over 20 different models. They vary in styles, grips, finishes, sights, etc., but basically they all center on the key idea that ‘less is more’.

NAA was founded in 1972 as Rocky Mountain Arms, in Utah. The name may have changed a couple of times since then, but the company’s passion for smaller guns has only continued to grow and intensify.

Those who are into pocket pistols will appreciate this weapon. Some compare revolvers to semi-autos, but I feel the comparison is needless. There is a lot you can do with five rounds of ammunition, but there is no denying that pistols usually have a higher round count, and hence are seen as better. In truth, the best weapon is the one you trust and can operate with, be it a revolver or semi-automatic.

Taurus Curve

This is a gun that looks and feels a little off the beaten track. This was precisely the point that Taurus wanted to make when this gun came out officially in 2015. At the time, those who saw it knew it was going to be something of a novelty.

The question on people’s minds was: it is just a novelty?

I short, the answer is no.

This thing is as real and deadly as any other firearm. The Curve is a concealed carry gun, through and through. It is meant for no other purpose. From its unique design to the caliber it shoots, Taurus wanted to make it clear that this is a pocket gun built purely for the aim of carrying it in concealment.

Okay, one thing I need to bring up now is that this gun is, well, not very attractive, in my opinion. Feel free to have yours, and feel free to disagree. It is a matter of personal taste and aesthetics, and nothing more. A gun doesn’t need to be attractive – it needs to shoot when you want it to shoot, period.

So, to sum up: it’s comfortable, ergonomic, and easy to handle, but it looks like a polymer potato. I am not judging it in any way because of that, mind you. As I said, Taurus made a complete statement when they released the Curve, and good for them. But it is a grower, let’s put it that way.

Baby Glock

In 1994, Glock introduced the ‘Baby’ Glock 26, chambered in 9mm. It is called the Baby, but in truth, it is much more than a pocket carry version of its elder 9mm brothers (the Glock 17 and 19). It has become one of the world’s most popular CCW firearms, and many men and women in uniform carry it as a backup gun.

Being a Glock, it is compatible with many Glock accessories and aftermarket products. However, it’s meant primarily for concealment purposes, so chances are you don’t want to overburden it with bells and whistles that add to its weight and bulk.

Kimber Micro 9

The Micro 9 was first introduced in 2015. It was a 9mm addition to the company’s Micro series. At first, the 9 included the Stainless, Two-Tone, and Crimson Carry variants.

Later on, more models were made available. It’s now been several years since the pocket gun was released, and it remains a best-seller of Kimber’s lineup. Marketed as a “micro compact 9mm”, it has picked up plenty of praise and awards along the way.

It’s not the first gun to merge 1911 controls with a semi-auto 9mm package, and it will not be the last, I am sure. There is a lot of convenience there, so it appeals to many shooters.

The Micro 9 features an aluminum frame with a stainless steel slide, rosewood grips, and a match grade trigger. It is the most expensive item on this particular list, but the MSRP is just that – you will undoubtedly be able to locate a cheaper deal if you look for it.

Conclusion

Coming back to the opening question of this article, the answer is ‘yes’ – I have a gun in my pocket and I am happy to see you! The best of both worlds, as it were.

The second amendment solidified our right to keep and bear arms. I wouldn’t presume to know all the figures but eventually, the constitution wins. This is why permit-free and unrestricted carry of civilian arms is also called ‘constitutional carry’.

Some of the claims against gun laws are justified. I am simply of the opinion that bad people with bad intentions will find a way of getting their deeds done, and it is for this precise reason that law-abiding citizens should exercise their right to carry, be it openly or in concealment.

Now entering its 25th year, Bond Arms is a company which specializes in the design and manufacturing of small-scale handguns, commonly known as derringers. These are classically single or double-barreled (over/under), some of them single-shot, and they come chambered in a wide array of bores and calibers. These little guys were all the rage in the Old West, and they have never stopped being relevant.

First produced by Henry Deringer in 1852, the Philadelphia Deringer continued to stay in production for 16 years. During that time, and since then, others began to manufacture similar weapons, and Remington came out with their Deringer in 1865. To avoid legal complication, competitors and fakers alike termed their guns ‘derringer’ with two ‘r’. Nowadays, either spelling is technically correct, with the latter being used most often by shooters and manufacturers.

Bond Arms

Bond Arms almost didn’t make it into existence. When the first Bond handgun was introduced, Greg Bond – founder of Bond Arms – was sued by his former employers. He was a gun collector and was eventually hired to do a job for American Derringer. He expressed his desire to redesign or readjust their gun, to make it safer and more effective, but management wanted to keep things the way they were.

He was fired less than a year after being hired, if I am not mistaken, and that is when Bond established his own company, intending to design and create a superior and more robust derringer. His old boss took him to court, claiming Bond was using their trade secrets to manufacture his gun. The judge didn’t agree with them, and after a long, costly, and tedious legal battle, Bond Arms was founded in Texas, in 1995.

They eventually found their market share and customers began to grow very fond of them. Bond Arms guns were being used in single action shooting society (SASS) competitions, coming in first in many events throughout the years. In 2007, Greg Bond decided he had enough of the business aspect of things, and sold Bond Arms to his brother Gordon.

That story resonates with me. It’s about the little guy taking on The Man, in a fight he didn’t start, and finally receiving justice and claiming victory. The stuff of great drama. Speaking of which, I have to mention two of my favorite derringer scenes in movies:

• The first is in Back to the Future, Part III. Buford ‘Mad Dog’ Tannen pulls one out of a hat. His buddy reminds him it only holds one shot, to which Tannen coolly replies: “I only need one”.

• The second is in the Matrix Reloaded where Persephone abruptly pulls one out of her clutch – I think that purse is called a clutch – and kills a vampire using a silver bullet. Boom.

Bond Arms Derringer

Bond handguns possess a rebounding hammer which moves back automatically and locks in position, as a safety measure. They also feature a mechanism which clicks into place, locking the barrels or releasing them, for quick reloading and maintenance. All of Bond’s handguns are guaranteed for life (within limits), and are machined from high quality materials which – if properly used – will serve you for the rest of your life.

A large number of barrels are produced by Bond Arms, and these are all interchangeable. You can use Bond’s barrels with any standard Bond firearm. I say “standard”, since they also perform custom work for individual shooters. The barrels range from 2.5” to 6” in length, and are available in many different calibers. In that sense, it resembles several survival rifles and/or shotguns, who make use of the same concept of interchangeability.

Bond went into business in order to create top-of-the-line, modern-day derringers. In this they have undoubtedly succeeded, as their models have brought the Wild West into the 21st century. Antique derringers are still highly-sought collectibles, but if shooting is your goal, Bond represents the go-to manufacturer for many a-shooter.

The company has a couple of models geared specifically towards female shooters, and a few others which were modeled to comply with California’s gun laws.

Bond Arms Bullpup

This firearm started out as Boberg Arms’ XR9-S. It was sold as such from 2011-2016, at which point Bond Arms acquired Boberg, and – after a few modifications to the original design – began marketing the gun as the Bond Bullpup9.

The thing you keep hearing about derringer guns is that it takes getting used to. This one especially takes some time at the range, due to its bullpup design. It is such a small package to begin with, and the distribution of weight can definitely be noticed. Those with big hands may want to rethink owning this type of gun, but it really all come down to training.

There is – or was – a known issue of case separation with Bond’s bullpup. The company has addressed this, stating that the issue may continue to occur when certain ammo is used in the handgun. It’ll fire pretty much any cartridge bearing the name 9mm Luger, but with certain cartridges, there is too much crimping going on, and it is this which causes malfunctions. Otherwise, this little guy will fire anything you give it.

The Bullpup9 is considered accurate and reliable by and large, but it has a price tag of over a thousand bucks, and that is one serious drawback in my opinion. I believe it really is a high-quality firearm, and the company is being genuinely truthful about the feeding issue and their findings. They list problematic brands in their manual and on their website – but still, the fact that certain rounds are prone to failure in a $1000+ firearm is unfortunate.

The Bullpup9 is machined out of aircraft-grade 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. Because the internal mechanism is busy with the process of loading the weapon after firing, the recoil is highly manageable.

Bond Arms Snake Slayer

With the Snake Slayer, you are trading the gun’s potential for higher capacity to gain two things: bore size and barrel interchangeability. This handgun accepts different barrels and calibers of all kinds, like other Bond arms handguns. As a self-defense CCW and/or a home protection gun, it is a great little shooter. It is also ideal for hikers, hunters, and campers. Effective and subcompact, it provides security in a very effortless sort of way.

The Snake Slayer is chambered to fire either 357 Mag and 38 Special, or alternatively 45 Colt and 410 bore. Like other derringers, it is all about speaking softly and carrying a big stick. Remember that this is a gun which requires some more focused training, since you need to cock the hammer before every single shot.

Snake Slayer IV (SSIV) is a slightly different model, same as the original but with a 4.25-inch barrel (which is why it was named IV). The longer barrel has several advantages. It will yield a tighter spread, produce a projective flying at higher velocity, and the barrel’s length will also manage the recoil in a better way.

The MSRP on the SSIV is $648. It weighs 23.5 oz, and is a tad longer than the ordinary Snake Slayer, coming in at 6.25” overall length. There is a handy spent case extractor on both models, and they both also feature a cross-bolt safety mechanism.

Trigger pull on the Snake Slayer is also something which needs to be mentioned. Like  other aspects of handling this firearm, it takes practice. Now, some would say that if you are not training with your firearm and have a good grip on it – literally and figuratively – then perhaps you shouldn’t be carrying it. I feel that is pretty accurate, because after all,  these derringers are not like your everyday Glock or 1911.

Bond Arms Backup

Derringers are well-known for their ability to act as a concealed carry backup to a primary weapon. Its subcompact nature makes it ideal for carrying in all sorts of situations and condition. Whether located deep in your pants pocket or secured in a designated holster, the Backup – chambered in 45 ACP – is a definite keeper.

This one is exceptionally small, even for a derringer-style gun. Featuring stainless steel 2.5-inch barrels and a stainless steel frame, it has an overall length of 4.5 inches. It weighs in at 18.5 oz, is fixed with rear sight and front blade, and has tough rubber grips. The grips are one of the most attractive things about this little guy, in my opinion. Again, for those with large hands it may present a problem, so take that into account.

First introduced in 2014, the Backup was received with a great deal of enthusiasm, and rightly so. Bond Arms makes somes of the best derringers in the market today. If the need is there and the price is right, there is no reason why you shouldn’t add it to your daily routine as a CCW or bug-out gun. Plus, the ability to change barrels with any other Bond gun, and fire a wide variety of shots and calibers, make this one gun you do not want to dismiss before you try it.

The MSRP of the Backup is $540, but they can be found for cheaper prices online and at gun shops, etc.

Conclusion

Derringers are the type of gun that will never go out of style. Military personnel, law enforcement agents, and civilians alike are all on board with these new models by Bond, Remington, and others. The price point will always remain a constantly-debated facet of the industry, and it isn’t any different with small-scale handguns.

Weight, size, price, capacity, accuracy, ease of use, and other deciding factors – these will always be ones which will eventually drive the customer towards one brand or another, one model or another. When dealing with such a small firearm, with such a limited capacity, you need to know what your intended use is. What is your endgame? Is it to be your primary EDC, a home-defense gun, a backup, a bug-out gun? What are your priorities?

One final point – these guns are a lot of fun to shoot. Let’s not forget that part of the fun of shooting is precisely that – having fun with your weapon of choice. Shooting is a sport, not just a means of survival or self-defense.

The more you train and use your weapon, the more it grows on you. This relationship between firearm and operator is crucial in many cases, since it will help determine the outcome of just about any scenario or set of circumstances where your personal firearm might be used. There is no doubt that with some derringer models (Bond or not), you will definitely need to practice and get used to it.

Yes, the rumors are true – Mossberg is returning to handgun production with their MC1sc 9mm pistol. Everyone is familiar with the Mossberg shotguns, but the popular gunmaker wanted to expand their collection even more. Little known fact, Mossberg started out producing handguns just over 100 years ago. A modern subcompact of the era, the Brownie was a four-barrel four-shot semiautomatic 22-cal pistol. It had a rotating firing pin allowing users to fire each barrel individually, which made it pretty innovative. One century and many shotguns later, Mossberg has graced the world with another subcompact pistol that is held to their standard of quality and reliability.

Mossberg MC1sc Build

The polymer striker fired pistol market has been ruled by Glock for as long as the category has existed, but Mossberg is looking to take part in an industry-wide revolution. In point of fact, the new Mossberg MC1sc corrects the few drawbacks Glocks have. Similarly, the new pistol was designed and constructed for everyday carry, so I’m sure many people will add it to their collection. One of the nicest features is their safety takedown system which allows you to disassemble the MC1sc without having to dryfire. If you’re hesitant to carry a Glock because of their safety features, the MC1sc cross-bolt safety model will keep your mind a little more at ease, especially if you carry one in the chamber. The MC1sc cross-bolt safety model costs the same as the base model, with the added advantage of a safety ensuring the trigger will not be accidentally pulled.

Mossberg is known for their quality, no-nonsense design and reliability and their new pistol certainly follows suit. When they saw an opening in the polymer strike fire subcompact market they didn’t hesitate and the quality in the MC1sc is what you would expect from a true Mossberg. This gun was made to be carried every day, with comfort and reliability being equally acknowledged. For starters, you’ll notice the ergonomic grip was optimized for easy targeting and improved handling. The grip is textured in specific spots to give users enough control in the right places while minimizing drag. Ultimately, it offers a balance of a snag-free draw and a gritty grip that you can handle even when wet.

Moving on, they opted for a glass-reinforced polymer frame that’s enhanced for increased durability. The sights are a three-dot snag-free dovetail design, with the option for aftermarket customization. However, there are other, lesser visible details which shouldn’t be ignored. For instance, the trigger guard has an extended profile allowing for easy access. Furthermore, they decided on a single-stack flush magazine build with a standard 6-round capacity or an extended 7-round option for folks interested in a little more room on the grip. Surprisingly, these magazines are made with a clear polymer with an orange floor plate for high-visibility when it’s time to reload. As an added bonus, every model comes with a reversible magazine release for the southpaw shooters out there. The ambidextrous option gives the subcompact a step up on Glock subcompacts for all left-handed shooters.

Next, I want to point out the pleasantly smooth and clean flat-profile trigger with an approximate 6 lb. pull. In a different attempt to stick it to Glock, Mossberg added a metal guide rod instead of the standard Glock plastic model. Similarly, the barrel and slide were both given stainless-steel finishes to ensure their durability and overall quality. The revolutionary takedown system in the MC1sc allows you to easily disassemble the pistol without having to dryfire or lift a pesky lever inside the firearm like other polymer strike fire pistols on the market. This is a huge plus in my book that I’m sure other shooters can appreciate too.

Mossberg MC1sc Performance

Mossberg designed this firearm with one thought in mind: Safe, reliable, and convenient daily carry. This gun was meant to be there when you need it the most, though it also makes for a great friend at the range or as a truck gun. Additionally, Mossberg designed it to be a comfortable gun to have concealed on your person all day long. No part of this gun was designed without function being heavily considered. Likewise, the build was crafted to allow you to draw this gun quickly and immediately put shots on target. This is largely due to the beautiful balance of grip where you need it and smooth lines where you don’t which also allow the MC1sc to have a snag-free draw and to be snag-free while on your hip.

Although many shooters don’t like single stack mags, Mossberg went this route to give their flagship handgun a slim profile ideal for concealed carry. In the same vein, the MC1 is chambered in 9mm, which is widely considered the ideal daily carry cartridge.

Mossberg MC1sc Price

The MSRP of the MC1sc is $425.00 which is a definitely great price for this firearm. Mossberg has a reputation in the shotgun market but doesn’t have the same reputation behind their name as a handgun producer. With that being said, many companies inflate the price of their guns based on their reputation. Mossberg is not one of those companies. The Mossberg 500 has always been a reasonably priced shotgun, just as the MC1sc is a reasonably priced handgun. You are getting a solid quality gun without breaking the bank, what more can you ask for? The money was invested in the right places from the perspective of Mossberg’s development team. Just think about the similar Glock 43. The new Mossberg pistol is cheaper than the G43, but unlike the G43, it has a steel guide rod, a more advanced safety option, and can be disassembled without dryfiring.

The new MC1 is an ideal buy for anyone on the market for a subcompact without any unnecessary bells and whistles. This meat and potatoes 9mm pistol is another great addition to the market and lends a hand to the tradition of quality and reliability that Mossberg has held for over 100 years.

Conclusion

If you are on the market for a daily carry piece, then the Mossberg MC1sc should definitely be on your list. Between Mossberg’s commitment to quality and their improvements on the polymer strike fire platform, the new pistol is sure to make sales. With the addition of the safe takedown system, an added safety feature, and an ambidextrous mag release, the MC1sc is a slight step ahead of other subcompacts on the market. The price cannot be beaten either, coming in cheaper than the king of the platform, the G43. The MC1sc is a great bang for your buck and another fantastic addition to the Mossberg firearms line. It’s also a nice way to acknowledge to their 100 year legacy with a return to the handgun market.

The G48 and G43x are the beginning of a new line of Glock single stack pistols under the SlimLine Series. If you are thinking “But Glock already has a single stack subcompact”, you’re right. But that’s never really stopped anyone in the industry from pumping out new products. So let’s get to business and take a closer look at the new Glock pistols.

Glock 48 and Glock 43x Specs

New Glock Designs

Glock has a history of making reliable handguns without any fancy bells or whistles. Over the years, they have taken their tried-and-true platform and expanded it to over 50 different models, always delivering a safe and reliable product that is simple to operate. The G48 and G43x are certainly not exceptions to this commitment to quality firearms. Expanding on their already extensive collection and variety of 9mm handguns, Glock now gives you the option of a slimmer single stack compact and subcompact better suited for daily carry. In comparison, the Glock 19 has a width of 1.26” while the G48 and G43x measure in at just 1.10” wide.

It’s important to note that previous single stacked 9mm mags used in the G43 do not fit in the new G48 and G43x. These new pistols have identical full-size grips, though the G48 has a slightly longer barrel then the G43x. Although Glocks are already popular among CCW owners, the powerhouse gunmaker wanted to up the ante.

If you live in a state with a 10-round magazine capacity limit and you still want a full frame grip, the G48 or G43x may be your best Glock options. I think these new models offer more instead of putting a 10 round mag into a Glock 19 or Glock 17. In addition to their redesigned frame and mags, the G48 and G43x also threw in the SlimLine standard reversible mag release, short trigger distance, and a built-in beavertail. Furthermore, these new models will be offered in three sight configurations, including the always popular Glock Night Sights. I also liked the new aesthetic approach of the G48 and G43x with their two-toned finishes (the silver nPVD finish is a nice touch). Besides for these few alterations, everything else is standard to the Glock brand.

Glock 43 vs Glock 43x

The G43 is slightly smaller than the G43x in height, width, and (loaded and unloaded) weight. However, they are nearly identical in barrel and slide length. In fact, the G43 barrel is just half a millimeter shorter than the G43x barrel. As an added bonus, the G43x is capable of holding 4 more rounds than the G43, which is good news for people who carry. Keep in mind that the G43x is seemingly meant to be a slimmer version of the G48, not to compete with the original G43. Many even argue that the G43 is still a more concealable weapon than either the G48 or G43x. If the G43 grip is too short for you, but you still want a slimmer profile for concealed carry, the G43x is certainly a viable option.

Glock 48 vs Glock 43x

Many people are wondering why Glock would release two single stack 9mm pistols at once, especially when they are so similar. Nevertheless, it’s their subtle differences which drive shooters to one model versus the other. You’ll notice that their lower receivers are identical while their most obvious difference is in their slides. The G48 has a .76” longer barrel and a .79” longer slide compared to the G43x. With that slightly longer slide comes a little bit more weight, with the G48 weighing in a staggering 2.08 oz heavier than the G43x. Other than this small difference on the front end, these two Glocks are basically the same.

Glock 48 Price

There is a ton of debate within the gun community about Glocks, especially when it comes to their overall value. In the case of the G48, I think the price is pretty reasonable being that it’s under $500. It’s worth mentioning that the G48 will be more widely available than some of their other models since the new mag only holds 10 rounds and is less restricted by state gun laws. In other words, you can expect to see a bunch of these in the Left-run states like California, New York, and New Jersey.

Glock 43x Price

The G43x is on par with other Glocks in that it’s reasonably priced for what you are getting. It’ll run you around $450, which isn’t so bad for a quality handgun with a reputation to back it. Like the other new model, it will be available and popular in all states since it doesn’t violate any state legislation on capacity restrictions.

Conclusion

The G48 and G43x are new additions to the growing family of Glock products. There is sure to be plenty of haters out there, especially considering the fact there is no need for more 9mm single stack pistols. Nevertheless, they are thinner than the G19 and any double stacked Glocks on the market today. However, they are NOT thinner than the G43, which is somewhat strange to me. To be honest, I’m left thinking, wow great another variant of Glock that no one asked for that doesn’t really do anything great. A jack of a few trades and a master of none, the new G48 and G43 are really only helpful if you live in a liberal state with magazine capacity limits.

The Makarov pistol (Pistolet Makarova or PM) is the most famous firearm to come out of Russia since the AK-47. After the Second World War, the Russians decided to phase out the classic Tokarev TT33. I don’t think there was much wrong with the Tokarev, but it was the Cold War and the Ruskies were looking to evolve everywhere they possibly could. Like the legendary Kalashnikov, the PM wasn’t built to win any beauty contests. Rather, it was meant to serve a trustworthy sidearm, which it still does to this day. In fact, the PM has been a military-issued firearm on over 3 dozen countries and is still employed in several former Eastern Bloc countries. Although most American shooters will never shoot one of these guys, I still felt it was important to acknowledge a gun with this much history.

Makarov Build

The Makarov may look simple, but that’s exactly what the Russians were aiming for. By incorporating as few components as possible and sticking with highly-durable steel, the Makarov pistol is actually a pretty solid handgun. Furthermore, because they wanted to create an effective sidearm that was both concealable and compact, the PM uses a unique caliber, but more on that later. Although its simplistic steel design increases its reliability and durability, it makes the pistol significantly heavier than comparable firearms. If I had to compare it to another pistol, the only one that comes to mind is the Walther PPK, which is also a minimalist steel semi-auto.

One of the Makarov’s standout features is its incredible safe operation, believe it or not. In addition to its safe blowback operation, the Russian shooter also sports an innovative and easy-to-use decocking safety switch. Besides for functioning as a standard safety lever, this feature also effectively prevents the hammer from striking the firing pin. Furthermore, the PM was designed to avoid accidental discharges, thanks to its notably heavy double-action trigger pull. To say the PM is lacking in ergonomics would be a major understatement. In addition to being unwieldy and heavy, the Russian pistol features a horrific plastic wraparound grip setup.

Makarov 9×18 Cartridge

While there are a few things which make the Makarov unique, few are as obvious as its 9×18mm PM cartridge. Although relatively unheard of in America, this pistol and SMG round is the Soviet equivalent of the NATO 9mm (9×19 Parabellum). Like 9mm, the Soviet equivalent packs a decent punch but is slightly wider and a tad shorter. Yet the only other firearm I’ve ever seen chamber this round is the old CZ Skorpion.

Makarov 380 Auto Cartridge

After the fall of the Iron Curtain, many Soviet weapons were commercialized, including many by Baikal. One of their best-selling Russian variants to be sold in the West was a .380 Makarov, marketed as the IJ-70. Although less common than 9mm, .380 Auto has seen a rise in popularity as a self-defense cartridge, particularly among pocket pistols. Also called 9mm Short and .380 ACP, this caliber is probably best known from the Glock 42, Ruger LCP II, Kahr CW380, and Sig P238.

Makarov Performance

As expected, the Russian-designed semi-auto can perform reliably year after year. Due to its simplicity and ease-of-use, the Makarov is relatively impressive, but don’t expect any extraordinary accuracy. Because the Russians opted for increased safety over initial shooting precision, this is not the kind of pistol you’d win any competitions with. Nevertheless, I can’t say I don’t appreciate the added safety features on a pocket gun, especially considering its notable DA/SA trigger mechanism. I also think it’s worth noting that the classic semi-auto’s slide locks back after firing the last round. In another attempt at increasing its reliability, the Makarov was built with a deeply recessed breech face to keep ejection and extraction consistent and dependable.

Makarov Magazine

When the Russian engineers decided to replace the Tokarev, magazine reliability was one of their utmost priorities. The aforementioned pistol’s mags were notoriously easy to lose. In order to fix this fundamental problem, the Makarov was constructed to keep mags firmly in place until released by pressing on the heel release on the bottom of the grip. These single-stack 8-round metal mags remarkably simple yet reliable, so long as they are oiled properly.

Makarov Holster

Considering that the Makarov pistol was designed to be carried, it’s gotta be paired with a suitable holster. In general, I always check out AlienGear and their incredible line-up of products. You can’t go wrong with these holsters, especially their new and improved 3.5 Cloak Tuck IWB model. On the other hand, I’ve seen a few people recommend a simple plastic holster from Fobus or Bianchi, both of which are relatively reliable.

Diamondback guns are relatively cheap and that’s their whole appeal. Well, a lot of folks also end up stumbling upon the DB9 when searching for an ultra-concealable carry gun. These compact lightweight pistols are not just small, they are the epitome of a CCW. But there are obvious problems to consider when dealing with a budget gun. That being said, we wanted to know if the Diamondback DB9 is worth your time and money – So let’s take a closer look, shall we?

Diamondback DB9 Build

The Diamondback DB9 micro-compact pocket-9 looks revolutionary but looks can often be deceiving. At first glance, this lightweight pistol is built like the Ruger LCP, Kahr P380, and especially like the Kel-Tec PF-9, with a clear Austrian influence from Glock. For starters, I’m a big fan of the compact size, especially because it still feels good in the hands. I have big hands so the slim profile isn’t great and my pinky hangs loose. Nevertheless, Diamondback offers +1 extended mags which makes a big difference.

Another thing you’ll notice is that the DB9 has several notable features which you’d only expect to see in premium firearms. Even though many of these are small, they come together in big ways and should not be overlooked. For instance, they threw on deep slide serrations on the front and rear, aggressively textured grips, and an innovative safety system.

The DB9 was outfitted with Diamondback’s patented “Zero Energy” striker system, featuring only internal safeties. In addition to its internal mechanical firing pin block, this inventive safety system restrains the striker from the primer until the trigger is intentionally pressed. While most other striker systems allow minimal spring tension, the DB9 keeps the striker safely at bay.

In terms of durability, the Diamondback 9mm is right about average. Because the firearm is so lightweight to begin with, they didn’t mind adding several steel components to give it some added strength. Similarly, instead of fancy finishes or coatings, the DB9’s slide and barrel were crafted with Finite Element Analysis Software. This computerized engineering process basically predicts how a given product will react to a wide variety of real-world influences, including heat, vibration, and air pressure. As a result, the DB9 is surprisingly resilient and corrosion-resistant.

Lastly, I was impressed by the simplicity of the 9mm’s takedown and field-stripping. Although it may take some getting used to at first, eventually you’ll be able to do it in seconds. Props to Diamondback for excluding removable pins or the need for tools.

Diamondback DB9 Performance & Shooting

As with any subcompact firearm, recoil is always your first concern. Nonetheless, the Diamondback premier pocket-nine is actually quite manageable. Although the DB9 is one of the smallest 9mm polymer pistols out there, the FEA construction help absorb recoil and keep it at a controllable level.

While the Diamondback’s “Zero Energy” striker system may be good for safety, it has a massive impact on the DB9’s shooting. The steel DAO trigger requires seriously intentional pull but is still probably better than the LC9. On the other hand, the DB9 is pretty ammo sensitive, so avoid using any reloaded, +P, or +P+ cartridges. Additionally, it’s best to stick with SAAMI approved ammo that is under 124 gr.

The Diamondback 9mm is accurate, but only at short distances. But that’s all you would ever really need it for. The pocket pistol is plenty capable within 10 yards, but anything further is questionable. I can’t stress enough that the DB9 is not meant to be a primary EDC gun. This firearm was designed as a backup pistol and it functions quite well as such. This is the kind of gun you keep in a purse, glove compartment, or desk drawer.

Accessories for the Diamondback DB9

Diamondback doesn’t really offer much of a variety when it comes to aftermarket options. Nevertheless, the most common accessories people buy are extended mags (definitely worth it), nifty pocket holsters, and speed loaders.

But there is one special attachment out there that stands out above the rest. LaserLyte – the company behind some of the most innovative firearm laser technology – has a laser sight trainer that is specifically designed to fit the DB9. Whether or not you believe this is a fundamentally useful accessory, it definitely works to improve faster target acquisition and overall accuracy.

Conclusion

I will repeat what I said earlier: The Diamondback DB9 is not designed to be a primary firearm. With that being said, this pocket pistol is more than capable of being your next backup gun. It’s a good gun to own that is better than average if used appropriately, which means using the right ammo, for example.

When most people think of South American guns, they tend to only think of with the Brazilian brand, Taurus. In truth, Bersa, based out of Ramos Mejia, Argentina is actually one of the best foreign firearms manufacturers. Although Bersa is an independent and privately held company, it was heavily influenced by Beretta Firearms. While the Argentinian company was founded by a small team of South American mechanical engineers, one of the team’s head engineers and brought over some of the ingenuity he received while working for Beretta in Italy. So, let’s get to it and take a closer look at their premier firearm, the Bersa Thunder.

Bersa Thunder Build

The increasing demand for affordable concealed carry weapons has propelled big name gunmakers and newcomers alike to produce better and cheaper EDC guns. While most people will recognize affordable CCWs like the SCCY CPX, Hi-Point CF-380, and the Taurus 709 Slim, the Bersa Thunder is often overlooked. Although I can appreciate ignoring the Thunder since it is a foreign pistol, there’s no reason to disregard it if that’s not a concern.

The Bersa Thunder has a sort of old-fashioned build that is quite similar to the Walther PPK. The Argentinian pistol was constructed primarily out of corrosion-resistant aluminum alloys but is still surprisingly lightweight. They opted for traditional components for the rest of the gun too, including a steel slide, checkered polymer grip panels, and a rounded combat style trigger guard.

Shooters will always argue about the necessity and practicality of safeties on a CCW. With that being said, the Bersa Thunder was built with a whole slew of safety features, including firing pin and manual thumb safeties, a mag disconnect, and an integral locking system. Overall, the 380 Thunder is a highly-concealable pistol that is not designed for everyone. Many shooters will be turned off by its small size and only fair design, but you get what you pay for.

Bersa Thunder Performance & Shooting

The main concern for concealable pistols is their perceived recoil, but the reduced weight of the Bersa Thunder doesn’t seem to affect its performance. In fact, the .380 handgun has a pretty manageable recoil and muzzle flip. As an added bonus, the Argentinian manufacturer offers an extended mag with extended finger rest.

Overall, the Bersa Thunder has decently intuitive controls and offers an average ergonomic shooting experience. However, I found its sight system considerably better than the comparable Walther PP. The Thunder features 3-dot windage-adjustable sights, including a dovetailed front sight.

I like how simple and straightforward the Thunder operates, especially considering its below-average price tag. The blowback-operated pistol is double-action/single-action and features convenient rear cocking serrations to make its operation even smoother. Moving forward, it’s hard to complain about the Thunder’s external controls, especially its safety system, slide catch, and rounded mag release. I also loved how simple its takedown and reassembly was. Cheaper guns like this need to be cleaned and lubed regularly, which makes an easy fieldstrip crucial.

The biggest issue with this defensive pistol is that it’s considerably ammo sensitive. As a result, be sure to test out several cartridges to find the right one before you rely on it for defense. I must warn you that I have heard several reports that the Bersa notoriously has problems firing Critical Defense Rounds.

Accessories for the Bersa Thunder

The Bersa Thunder is imported into the U.S. by Eagle Imports, who offers a nice variety of aftermarket options. In addition to the extended magazine, Eagle Imports also offers a Fobus Paddle Holster ($28) and double mag pouch ($25) plus the Crimson Trace Laser Grip ($229).

The factory standard grip system on the Bersa is alright, but I was glad to hear that Eagle Imports has a few other options available. The popular importer also has deals on a rubber wrap-around grip and blue laminated wood grips. Bersa specifically designed the grip to be slim to provide highly-concealable carrying, but the additional grips won’t add any noticeable thickness.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the Bersa Thunder is better than you’d expect just from looking at its price tag. The South American defense pistol is surprisingly ergonomic and reliable, but it’s still just a budget gun. I would recommend the Thunder for beginner or female shooters and maybe as a backup truck/glove compartment gun.

Once I started my trial with Walther Arms’ collection of semi-auto handguns I couldn’t get enough. After an initial hiccup with the PPK, I got to experience some of the most impressive sub-$700 polymer-framed pistols on the market. While I thought I had found my new favorite CCW with the remarkable PPQ 45, I had to really put things into perspective once I got my hands on the PPS M2. As someone with big hands, I’ve generally tried to steer clear from single-stack 9mm guns, but I figured I had to give it a try after hearing so many positive reviews. 

Walther PPS M2 Specs

Walther PPS

After nearly ten years of production, Walther Arms decided it was time to update the PPS, so in 2016, they finally released the PPS M2. Besides for switching from .40 S&W to the more manageable 9mm, the M2 features several other key upgrades including front slide serrations, an improved grip system, and an American-style magazine release.

One of the biggest complaints of the original model was about those pesky, European-style paddle mag releases, so I was glad to see Walther ditched them for the more ergonomic American-style release. One of the more puzzling changes Walther made with the M2 was removing the integrated Picatinny rail from the original PPS. Nevertheless, it doesn’t seem like anyone misses it, especially considering it was designed to be a compact CCW.

Walther PPS M2 Build

Built very similarly to the PPQ and comparable to the Glock 43, the Walther PPS M2 is unpredictably ergonomic for a compact single-stack pistol. While this is nothing new for Walther, it is still unexpected coming from such a small firearm.

Truth be told, the surprisingly natural feel and intuitive controls make the PPS feel like a full-length pistol. In their attempt at keeping their CCW as affordable as possible without sacrificing any quality, the German arms developer ingeniously blended simplicity and innovation to create one of the best weapons in its class.

Starting with PPS’s 3-dot metal sight system, the fixed front and windage-adjustable rear sights are nothing fancy but still manage to do wonders for accuracy – plus they are low-profile so conceal carriers need not worry. Although the model I used was outfitted with the standard Walther sights, I’ve heard great things about the optional phosphorous sights on the Law Enforcement model.  

Moving downwards, we arrive at the often-overlooked Walther slide. I’m going to ignore the useful front and rear serrations and chamber viewport because these are standard for Walther. What you really want to look for is the convenient red cocking indicator that works even better in poorly-lit environments. As an added durability bonus, Walther gave the PPS M2 a resilient Tenifer coating that does magic in fighting corrosion. One of my favorite features on many Walther firearms is the slide stop; I love that the slide locks back after emptying a magazine, but I was a little disappointed that the PPS M2 doesn’t have the extended slide release like on the PPQ.

All in all, the PPS M2 is loaded with features which keep its operations simple and easy while still boosting performance. Between its easy takedown, American-style push-button mag release, and solid grip system, this is one CCW you can’t let slip away.   

Walther PPS Performance and Operation

All too often shooters are stuck picking between performance, concealability, and control when looking for a CCW; fortunately, Walther seems to have figured it all out. The PPS M2’s manageable recoil and crisp, lightweight trigger shocked me when I first tried out the new German compact semi-auto.

While the 9mm shooter offers decent accuracy, it’s nothing to write home about, which is to be expected from a gun this size. Nevertheless, the average shooter should have no problem getting tight groups at 15 yards thanks to its solid control and polygonal rifling.

Unlike some other Walther handguns, the M2 can handle all kinds of ammo, including handloads, hollow points, and FMJs. Just ask any PPS owner and they’ll confirm that it just doesn’t fail. This means that in addition to its class-leading accuracy, the PPS M2 also has arguably the best endurance in its class.

Be it slow and steady shooting or rapid-fire, the compact Walther can handle it all while providing a comfortable and fun shooting experience.    

Although the reasonably light trigger may need some breaking in to achieve your ideal feel, it’ll eventually be smooth as silk, just be patient. That being said, I found that while the PPS’s trigger was fine, it was just a little bit of a step down from the PPQ’s with its slightly crisper break and reset.

Overall, considering that the PPS offers the confidence and feel of a full-length firearm with the weight and size of a compact, what’s not to love?

Walther Magazines

If you are one of the many people who shy away from single-stacks because of their low-capacity, I urge you to reconsider the PPS M2. Besides for an extended mag option, each M2 ships from Walther with three magazines, which mitigates some of the capacity issues. Besides for upgrading your capacity, Walther also gives you three size options for your PPS magazines. Whether you opt for the 6-round flat, 7-round standard, or 8-round extended, it’s easier than ever to get that custom-feel that is so crucial on a single-stack firearm.    

Accessories for the Walther PPS

Without a Picatinny rail, Walther didn’t leave PPS M2 owners with many aftermarket options. Nevertheless, as a premium CCW, it’s essential to invest in a comfortable and convenient holster. That being said, I highly recommend any AlienGear holster or a Vedder OWB LightDraw. These holsters may be costly ($70) but they’re definitely worth it.

After choosing your gun, Vedder offers tons of additional options including hand orientation, color, cant angle, and clip style. Although most shooters will stick with the classic black, the LightDraw has a nearly endless collection of styles including Brown Raptor, Hot Pink, Navy Digital, RealTree AP Snow, and Mossy Oak Shadow Grass.

Walther PPS Vs. CCP

I’ve received a lot of questions recently regarding how the PPS M2 compares to the CCP, and I can see why. Considering the fact that these two Walther CCWs were released within two years of each other, cost roughly the same, and possess many of the same features, how do you know which is right for you?

In short, while the CCP offers an accessory rail, better grip, and manual thumb safety, the PPS M2 is simply more compact and reliable. However, I’ve had more and more Walther fans tell me that the P99c AS is even better than the PPS M2. At the end of the day, you can be sure you’ve chosen well.
