The modern gun industry is packed with cheap firearms but in most cases, you get what you pay for. However, every now and then affordable handguns are released that surprise even the toughest critics. Some of the best cheap guns are actually rifles and shotguns, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of decent quality cheap revolvers and pistols. Today we’re going to examine the best budget handguns on the market and see who delivers the best bang for your buck.

Best Low Price Guns

While there aren’t so many handguns under 200 dollars, there are some that definitely stick out. The term budget gun is loosely defined and is generally used to refer to firearms under $400 or so, but we’re here to scrutinize the top guns under 200 dollars give or take. Some may be sold for more and some may be sold for less, but I think $200 is a safe measure of calling a handgun cheap. I will try to keep most of the firearms here under that benchmark but exceptions will definitely be made. This is especially true given that prices change and different vendors offer sales all the time for discount guns.

One of the most interesting discoveries I made in my search for the best cheap handguns was that they came from all over the world. From Italy and the United States to Brazil and Germany, discount guns are made across the globe. However, one of the things I learned is that some good manufacturers make crappy budget guns (that’s you, Chiappa, and the freaking Beretta Pico).

Kel-Tec P32 Pistol

There are cheap guns and then there are cheap gun manufacturers. Kel-Tec has built a reputation for crafting affordable firearms and the P32 pistol is an interesting budget gun. Besides being the lightest .32 Auto ever created, the DAO gun can be yours for just over $200. Likewise, Taurus Firearms has a decent selection of budget pistols that can found for under $250, I recommend finding a used PT-92 or G2.

One of my favorite underrated budget pistols has got to be the SCCY CPX2. I truly don’t get why more people haven’t picked these guys up. They’re probably one of the best CCWs under $250 packed with high-quality engineering and excellent customizability.

SCCY CPX-2 Pistols

Best Budget Revolvers

There are a few reasons why it’s easier to make a better budget revolver than a pistol but I think cheap revolvers are generally better than cheap pistols.

Anyone looking for a cheap revolver should definitely consider the German EAA Windicator. German engineering is renowned around the world and that reputation holds true to their firearms. The Windicator may not be pretty or even have such great handling, but it’s damn reliable and has an overall great bang for your buck score.

Snub-Nose EAA Blued Windicator

Another great revolver is the single-action Ruger Wrangler series. These nifty six-shooters can be yours for under $200 and they offer the quality you expect from other Rugers. While it’s no CCW, it’s certainly one of the best cheap revolvers on the market without a doubt.

My favorite budget revolver has got to be the Heritage Manufacturing Rough Rider revolver. These “cowboy guns” are shockingly cheap for how nice they are. Yes, they are old-fashioned revolvers based on the Colt Single-Action Army revolver but they shoot very well and can shoot both .22LR and .22 magnum. These wheel guns are a great addition to your collection and will only take you back a bit over $150.

 Heritage Manufacturing Rough Rider revolver

Cheap Handguns Under 150 Breakdown

If you want to know how much does a gun cost when you strip down most of the features and aesthetics, it doesn’t usually get below $150. This is a safe benchmark for handguns because it’s hard to find any legitimate pistol or revolver for less. That’s not to say that there aren’t cheap real guns under 100 dollars but it is a rarity. In fact, I’d say $200 is still considered a cheap handgun. Guns for less than this should be approached with caution since there’s probably a good reason they’re so cheap. Nevertheless, it’s important to do your research because sometimes the price can drop drastically simply because it’s made in a 2nd or 3rd world country.

When it comes to budget firearms it’s hard to have a conversation without mentioning Hi-Point and the Hi-Point C9 pistol. Hi-Points are probably the most hotly debated guns on the planet but, truth be told, they offer an excellent bang for your buck score. This ugly shooter can be yours for around $150 and it does the job but not much more.

“Beautiful” Hi-Point C9

If you’re looking for the ultimate cheap handgun then you gotta check out the ALTOR Corp Pistol. While it looks exactly like a glue gun, it’s actually a single-shot firearm available in .380 ACP and 9mm. It’s cumbersome to handle and shoot but it does shoot. I don’t know why anyone would actually want to own this gun but it’s one of the most unique firearms I’ve seen. Just remove the barrel and jam a single round in and hope for the best. The barrel is rifled so it’s surprisingly accurate given the fact that it looks like it was designed by a 4th grader.

ALTOR Corp Pistol

Best Cheap 9mm Pistol

There are several solid 9mm pistols you can find under $250 including the Taurus Millenium G2, SCCY CPX2, and Hi-Point C9. Obviously, none of these guns are perfect and they are all bound to have haters. I personally really like my Taurus and I even used it for daily carry for a while. I also like the SCCY but it’s an acquired taste and isn’t as reliable as the others. Then we have the Hi-Point C9 which is arguably the most hated gun on the internet but, honestly, it works and it is ridiculously durable. I know there are plenty of people who’ve had nightmare experiences with Taurus, but assuming all works as it’s supposed to, the G2 or G2C is probably my pick for the best cheap 9mm pistol.

Taurus Millennium G2

Best 22 Handgun Under $200

I’ve been shooting .22 for as long as I can remember and it’s hard not to love this cartridge. Because .22 ammo is so cheap, .22 has sort of become the Everyman’s firearm for practice and target shooting. As a result, it’s only logical that the best cheap 22 pistol will be something sought out by shooters of all ages. Whether you’re looking to boost your collection or give your kid their first firearm, a quality .22 handgun is versatile and good to own.

ATI GSG Firefly

Although I really love my .22 Rough Rider revolver, I think the overall best 22 handgun under $200 has got to be the American Tactical Imports GSG Firefly. This nifty little rimfire was designed as a training pistol but works great for all kinds of .22 shooting. The German-made pistol was crafted to replicate the popular Sig Sauer P226 but a tad smaller. The controls and feel of the gun are excellent and really do a great job of mirroring the Sig. This gun offers a fantastic bang for your buck and can be yours for around $190.

Best Cheap Handgun Overall

Some people will ask me, how much does a handgun cost and there’s no objective answer for that. I’ve used $300 guns that I liked better than some $1000 models. It all boils down to preference and the level of premium features and aesthetics available. However, I do think that there is a way to compare the best budget guns and get a clear picture of which offer the best bang for your buck. It’s hard just to pick one so I think my favorite budget revolver would be the classic Rough Rider revolver while my favorite pistol is the ATI GSG Firefly.

Walther Arms has been at the forefront of pistol innovation since their not-so-humble beginnings and heyday back in Nazi Germany. Although it took some time to rebuild following the war, the German company has come a long way since then and has established themselves among the premier pistol makers in the world once again. Besides arming James Bond, Walther has created some of the best budget-friendly polymer CCWs, such as the PPQ and PPS. Nevertheless, Walther has also made some remarkable strides into the competitive shooting community, including pistols, rifles, and airguns. Then there are the hybrid pistols that combine the tactical polymer configuration with match-grade performance, such as the Walther Q5. Today, we’re going to take a closer look at the Walther Q5 Match and see if the hype is well-deserved.

Walther Competition Pistols

Walther Q5

The Walther Q5 Match pistol was built to handle competitive shooting while retaining a tactical and practical look and feel. The first thing you’ll notice about the Q5 is the colored trigger and ported barrel which help it stand out from other Walther polymer pistols. Although the Q5 is part of the popular PPQ line, it has a flavor of its own. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that the Walther Q5 Match looks and feels like a custom pistol and sure as hell shoots like it.

Taking a closer look at the Walther Q5 reveals a terrific Tenifer coating that provides strong corrosion resistance to the slide, barrel, and inside action. Then, run you can run your fingers across the slide and feel the front and rear slide serrations culminating in ported barrel for enhanced barrel cooling, minimized muzzle rise, and reduced weight. However, behind the scenes, you’ll find a 5” barrel with polygonal rifling and a steep chamber for enhanced accuracy and consistent feeding.

Field-stripped Q5

I couldn’t miss the grips on these guys since I’ve love Walther’s polymer grips, especially the models like these which come with interchangeable backstraps for a more custom feel and better handling. As an added bonus, getting the exact right fit for your hand enables quick access to the slide and mag releases without needing to readjust. Not to mention that the Walther Q5 Match M1 features both ambidextrous paddle mag releases and slide stops.

We gotta talk about accessories because the Q5 has an integrated lower Picatinny rail and a built-in optic mounting slide system designed for Leupold, Trijicon, and Docter red-dot optics. But don’t overlook the fact that the Q5 does come pre-equipped with standard competition iron sights that are actually pretty great.

Walther Q5 Match Backstraps

Lastly, it’s time we discuss that blue trigger. The Quick Defense Trigger is set with a nice and easy 5.6-lb pull with a notably short 0.4” travel. This will naturally be a point of contention between shooters, but I personally liked it for target shooting.

The polymer striker-fired 9mm shot well in my opinion, certainly better than your average 9mm. The consistency of the Walther Q5 is commendable as is the user-friendliness. I tried one with the factory iron sights and it was excellent, but then I attached a Leupold Delta Point and oh man was that great. I’m not a huge lover of red-dots but I had a blast running through competition-style courses with a red-dot on the Walther Q5 Match pistol.

The first time you pick one up it may feel unbalanced, but that typically goes away once you load the firearm. In general, the Q5 has pretty solid handling and control and a better trigger than many comparable firearms. As I said, this gun impressed me most by its consistency, and most of that lies in the trigger system.

Walther Q5 Match SF

I initially thought that the Walther Q5 Match SF wouldn’t be much different than the standard Walther Q5 Match pistol. The truth is that added weight and length actually make a nice positive difference in the shooting dynamic. Besides the longer Picatinny rail, there’s hardly any difference other than the steel frame, alternate grip, and an extra half-inch on the slide. Nevertheless, there was a very different ergonomic feel in shooting the Q5 SF.

In practice, the steel frame Walther benefits from enhanced weight distribution which leads to reduced recoil and even better control. While I really liked the classic PPQ grips, the SF’s grips with the beavertail combine for a decent grip that won’t disappoint.

Walther Q5 SF

Walther Q4 Tac

A lot of folks like to compare the Walther Q5 Match M1 with the Walther Q4 Tac M2 pistol. While both firearms are part of the PPQ line, there are a few slight differences that make them unique. However, I will say that they are remarkably similar, especially considering they both are fit for optics, have the same style ambidextrous controls, use the Quick Defense Trigger, are fitted with the same interchangeable backstraps, etc. Oddly enough, the most apparent difference is the Q4 Tac’s suppressor-ready design and non-blue trigger.

The new Ruger 5.7 pistol is an ambitious step in advancing the controversial and impressive 5.7x28 cartridge, but will it work?

Ruger has been pumping out new and innovative firearms at a pretty impressive rate and the new Ruger 57 is no exception. The Ruger 57 Pistol is special in many ways but stands out by being one of the few firearms chambered in the FN 5.7 x28mm cartridge. To date, there are less than a handful of pistols that can handle 5.7 x28mm ammo which makes the new Ruger 57 worthy of our attention. That being said, there’s plenty of controversy surrounding the 5.7 x28 so it was a bold move from Ruger that I think is admirable. Putting the wants and desires of the gun community first is important in the firearms world and unfortunately, isn’t always a given anymore. In any case, let’s take a look at the new Ruger pistol and see what it has to offer.

5.7 x28mm

I think it’s prudent to discuss the 5.7 x28 caliber before we begin talking about the Ruger 5.7 model. For starters, the 5.7×28mm cartridge was created by FN Herstal in the late 1980s and only went on into production in the early ’90s. While it’s typically considered a small caliber, it packs a serious punch that would eventually lead to its controversy around the world. FN heeded the call by NATO to manufacture a replacement for the classic 9mm cartridge for service by worldwide military and police units. However, it’s important to note that FN didn’t use a parent case for their new cartridge and developed it from scratch.

The high-velocity round with a rebated rim and bottlenecked centerfire cartridge was designed to be used with FN’s popular P90 Personal Defense Weapon (PDW). The end result was supposed to be FN cashing in big-time with NATO and it worked out pretty nicely for the Belgian gunmaker. At first glance, the 5.7 x28mm looks like a rifle cartridge and could easily be compared to the likes of 22 Hornet and 22 Magnum especially.

Ruger 5.7 Ammo

At the end of the day, FN beat out Heckler and Koch in NATO’s testing and would go on to arm military and law enforcement in close to 50 countries. By this time, FN had developed a 57 pistol – naturally known as the FN Five-Seven – to go along with their P90. FN was owned the 5.7 x28 market even when Excel Arms and MasterPiece Arms attempted to create their own firearms for the unique cartridge.

Additionally CMMG and other manufacturers came out with AR pistols and other AR variants to explore the 5.7 world. In general, I think it’s safe to say that the 5.7 x28mm is best utilized in SMGs, AR pistols, PDWs, and bullpups. They were created to be tactical, fast, low recoil, and heavy-hitting.

CMMG Banshee in 5.7×28

The biggest complaint most people have is actually about the price, which could be worse for the up-and-coming cartridge. Nonetheless, even those within the gun community debate the value of the cartridge considering its above-average muzzle flash, loud firing, and arguably weak terminal performance.

As we mentioned earlier, the FN Five-Seven received a lot of flack for being “too deadly” and not meant for civilians. Many activists believed that 5.7 x28 ammo was armor-piercing and should not be available to the public. What they don’t know is that the round is also considerably safer is some regards, such as that it minimizes collateral damage by avoiding ricochets and overpenetration.

As a result, FN released a few variants of the traditional 5.7 x28 ammo, including the SS195LF and SS197SR variants for civilian use. These civilian rounds still offer approximately 25% less recoil than your average 9mm and provide a remarkably flat trajectory compared to other self-defense calibers. It’s important to remember that these really are designed to be defense rounds and aren’t range mules by any means.

New Ruger 57

The Ruger 5.7 pistol is slim, sleek, and offers the classic tactical design people love about Rugers. I’m not saying that this is the perfect gun. At the end of the day, the Ruger pistol is still a niche gun with an expensive chambering, that is decently long for concealed carrying considering it’s a defense gun.

The first thing I noticed about the Ruger 57 pistol was its flat design. It was interesting to see such a long gun be so slim. It’s definitely reminiscent of the original FN Five-Seven but with a sleeker, more modern design. I also noticed the non-uniform grip system which was not as high-quality as I expected. Nevertheless, the minimized recoil helped keep the firearm’s control particularly noteworthy.

Ruger 5.7 Pistol

Even with the slim design, the Ruger 57 pistol has thick and user-friendly controls which make operation fast and easy. The slide serrations were great, the mag release was simple, the safety was intuitive, and the trigger was slightly above average. The addition of the extended lower Picatinny rail made me think that this is the kind of gun I would keep in my bedside drawer, not on my hip – but that’s ok.

The 5.7 x28 round is home-defense-friendly and the Ruger 57 Pistol is easy for novice shooters, like family members. I wouldn’t want to keep a .45 1911 as a house gun because it’s impractical for my family members to use but this gun is far more user-friendly.

I do think that the new Ruger 57 could use a bit more care on its ergonomics, but it’s hard to complain considering it’s not meant for prolonged use and its control is so good. The 1911-style ambi-safety was a nice touch to the already solid control system, but I really liked that they drilled and tapped the slide for added optic, though the factory-installed adjustable fiber-optic sights are pretty damn good too.

New Ruger Pistol

After a few mags downrange I think it’s safe to say that it’s a fun gun to shoot that would be a worthwhile purchase. Although I initially wasn’t impressed by the grips, the shooting experience was nothing but pleasant. I thought it was interesting that they kept with steel mags, but the gun still was unusually light, even with one of their 20-round magazines. Like the grips, the flat-faced Secure Action trigger turned out to be better than I expected and damn were follow-up shots easy and on target.

5.7 x28 ammo

Although there aren’t a whole lot of ammo options for the new Ruger 5.7 x28mm Pistol there are some great choices. Keep in mind that the Ruger 57 can hold a decent number of cartridges in a mag thanks to the relatively small diameter of the long cartridges. So while you can get 10+1 or 20+1 capacities with the Ruger 5.7 firearm, it won’t be cheap.

Ruger 5.7 x28 ammo

Most places don’t stock a whole bunch of 5.7 x28 ammo but when they do, it’s likely to be Federal or FN Herstal. In my experience, the most common ammo available for the new Ruger pistol is the American Eagle 40gr FMJ and the FN USA SS197SR 40gr with Hornady V-Max tips.

FN 57 vs Ruger 57

Besides the new Ruger 57 pistol the FN 57 is the only other serious 5.7 x28 handgun option. It should be noted that the FN Five-Seven was first developed in the 90s and has gone through several variants, meaning it should theoretically be more advanced than the first-gen Ruger pistol. Oddly enough, the FN model is nearly twice the price of the Ruger yet looks cheaper.

FN 57

However, the FN is built with some higher-quality materials which certainly help durability, but I don’t think these are the kind of guns people abuse. Otherwise, the two 5.7 guns look pretty similar but I’d give Ruger the advantage in overall appearance. Some other notable differences include the FN’s polymer magazine, cold hammer-forged stainless steel barrel, and different safety setup.

Conclusion

Overall, the Ruger 57 is a nice innovation that isn’t limited to its niche gun status. There’s plenty to love about this gun and not much to dislike, which is great to see in a gen-1 production. Time will tell if there will be serious issues with it like recalls, but I think the 5.7 Ruger is one of the more ambitious pistols I’ve seen in a while.

Glocks, you either hate ‘em or love ‘em but you can’t deny their popularity. They are consistently among the top-selling pistols in the world and can be found among civilians, law enforcement, and military alike. While the Austrian manufacturer typically dominates the CCW category, they recently launched a new pistol that stands out from the rest of their catalog. Glock finally debuted their first rimfire pistol and it made some noise throughout the gun community. The .22LR G44 looks just like the G19 but many wonder if Glock has what it takes to take on the rimfire niche. Let’s take a look at the new G44 and see for ourselves.

@Nickie_lee https://www.instagram.com/p/B3IJn9ogJEm70HO6mtLUz29Bru0hJIApPa2PDM0/

G44 Rundown

I’ll start by saying that loading a Glock with .22 rounds was weird. The last three major debuts from Glock included the G19X, G17 & G19 upgrades, and the G48 and G43X. It’s safe to say that they have focused primarily on law enforcement- and military-friendly pistols in addition to their collection of tactical CCWs. However, the G44 was a step far out of their comfort zone, being a primarily civilian firearm not built for concealed carrying. Nevertheless, some argue that Glock created the G44 to be a training weapon for shooters before upgrading to the G19 or other 9mm Glock option. In that case, the G44 offers shooters the controls and feel of a regular Glock but with a cheaper and more manageable .22LR operation. I got my hands on one for a day of plinking and I wasn’t disappointed. I don’t particularly like Glocks but there wasn’t much to complain about here.

G44 Disassembled

Previous Glock shooters will have no trouble adjusting to the new Glock 44 since it follows the classic Glock design. Basic features include the standard Glock polymer frame and magazine, adjustable plastic sights, and striker-fired trigger. Like the other Gen 5 Glocks, you’ll notice there aren’t any finger grooves on the grip which may bother some but Glock seems to be sticking with that design. Likewise, they threw in a few modular rear grip straps to enhance the shooter’s control, plus an ambidextrous slide stop and a flared mag-well.

Overall, it’s exactly like shooting a Gen 5 Glock 19 with the exception of the .22LR rimfire difference. In fact, the G44 even fits into most G19 holsters and mag pouches I could find. This was another key that they created this as a training pistol for their more “advanced” models. Nonetheless, I had a good time plinking with the .22, but I love shooting .22 so I’m easy to please in that regard. When I took a closer look at the G44 and the G19 there were a few things that stood out. For instance, the G44 weighed half as much as the G19, which probably has to do with the 9mm barrel. Furthermore, while the G44 was slightly skinnier, they shared the same length and height.

Glock 44 Specs

Model: G44

Caliber: 22LR

Capacity: 10-Round Mag Standard

Barrel Length: 4″

Overall Length: 7.3″

Height: 5″

Width: 1.26″

Weight: 14.6 oz (Unloaded)

MSRP: $389

Magazines

While they do look quite similar, there were a few major differences between the G44 and G19 triggers. For instance, the G44 has these raised ridges on the backside of the mags, which can help in tactical situations I guess. Like many other .22LR mags, these were easy to load and easy on the fingers. However, I should mention that there were a few failures to load when I used dirty rounds but that can be expected.

Loading the G44 Mag (Courtesy of Glock)

G44 Shooting

I wanted to use a variety of ammo to properly test the Glock 44’s shooting ability so I checked my stash of .22 and brought out Federal Champion 36-grain HP, Blazer 38-grain LRN, Remington Golden Bullet 40-grain high-velocity LRN, and some CCI Quiet 45-grain LRN. I started with targets 10 yards downrange and eventually made my way up to 50 yards. I should be clear that this is definitely not a competition pistol but it still does offer some great plinking. I don’t usually measure my groupings but I was curious how I shot with the G44 and was able to keep my 10-shot groups just below 2-inches at 20 yards. I should also note that I ran a few mags with a mix of ammo and had no problems so long as the ammo was clean.

New Glock 44 (Courtesy of Glock)

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the Glock 44 was a fun gun to shoot that I will never own. I don’t really love the way Glocks feel and shoot, plus there are far better .22LR pistols out there. I think the G44 is best suited for folks looking to train for using other Glocks, especially youth shooters. In fact, if there are young men and women out there who want to carry a G19, G17, or other Glock, this is a great buy. Start with this, get used to the feel of shooting and carrying, and see if Glock is right for you.

Without getting into the controversy surrounding Springfield Armory or Dick’s Sporting Goods, I can’t ignore the Hellcat 9mm pistol which is taking the handgun industry for a ride. Despite some bad press, SA has its eyes on the future as evident by their releasing of a newsworthy compact pistol. The Hellcat initially made shockwaves by offering the highest capacity micro-compact 9mm on the market.

While making headlines may seem impressive, I find that these things should always be taken with a grain of salt, at least. Therefore, I got my hands on one of these nifty little pistols to see if the hype was well-deserved.

Springfield Armory Hellcat

On the surface, the Springfield Hellcat pistol looks like many other polymer pistols in its class. If anything, its appearance looked kind of busy in that the controls were more pronounced that one might expect from a “revolutionary” micro-compact pistol. Nonetheless, it felt pretty good in my hands and the controls were intuitive and user-friendly, plus practically everything felt textured making it easy to handle.

Springfield Armory already has a good reputation for the firearms, including their SAINT AR-15, XD Series, and 911 pistols so I had high expectations for their new series. Springfield was marketing it to be filled with many “exciting new features” such as an adaptive grip texture, high visibility sights, and a patented magazine. Altogether, the new Hellcat pistol series was designed to be the ultimate carry gun and my first impression was great.

Springfield Hellcat

Even the small things can make a big difference and Springfield Armory certainly took that into account. For instance, knowing that the smaller grip can be harder to handle for people with big hands, they added a great beavertail for support. Additionally, the Hellcat features a flat trigger body with a noticeably crisp pull, a reversible mag release, deep slide serrations, a standard front accessory rail, and a loaded chamber indicator.

At the range, there was slightly more muzzle rise than I was expecting since I was comparing it in my head to the Sig P365 Glock 43x and Smith & Wesson M&P Performance Center Shield 2.0. Now, it didn’t have bad handling, but I was expecting just a bit better control. Nevertheless, follow-up shots are still surprisingly easy as are shots straight from a holster draw. Plus, the tritium U-dot sight system was absolutely excellent for defensive and tactical shooting.

SA Hellcat Dimensions

One of the major developments SA announced with this new handgun was the addition of some new advanced grip system. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like the grips were anything special, but they were definitely above average for similarly priced polymer pistols. They made it seem like it was gonna be a game-changer, but I was underwhelmed after trying them out. In fact, I ended up just adding a layer or so of Talon grip tape just to make it fit my hand better.

Model: Hellcat Micro-Compact

Caliber: 9mm

Capacity: 11+1

Barrel Length: 3”

Overall Length: 6”

Height: 4”

Width: 1”

Weight: 18.3 oz

Finish: Melonite

Sights: U-DotTritium/Luminescent Front, Tactical Rack Rear

MSRP: $569

Springfield Hellcat Holster

Springfield currently markets one holster for the Hellcat and it’s a pretty fair holster for daily carrying. They offer the Crossbreed Reckoning IWB Holster for $69.95 with multiple points of retention adjustment. The Crossbreed holster can be worn on the cross draw, appendix, or strong-side positions. It has a solid reputation for comfort and functionality and will soon be able to attach a mag carrier. However, Aliengear Holsters makes several great options for the Hellcat and their products are almost always top-notch.

Springfield Hellcat OSP

The Hellcat OSP (Optical Sight Pistol) is essentially the same as the popular Hellcat model with the addition of a seamless cover plate for attaching optics. For only $30 more, you get the same pistol but optics ready, perfecting for adding a red dot. It’s a worthwhile purchase if you like the Hellcat and think you might ever want to add a sight. SA recommends opting for the JP Enterprises JPoint or Shield RMSc, but there are plenty of red dots out there to choose from.

Springfield Armory Hellcat OSP Model

Springfield Hellcat vs P365

The Sig Sauer P365made headlines for many reasons, one which was being able to handle 10 rounds in a flush magazine. Then came along the Springfield Armory Hellcat delivering 11-round capacity in a flush magazine. They also offer an 11+1 with pinky extension and a 13+1 extended mag for those looking for more rounds. However, the P365 also comes with two additional mags including 12 and 15 round magazines.

These two new popular polymer pistols are remarkably similar in many respects, including size, weight, feel, and features. The most notable difference is the extra round in the flush magazine in the SA Hellcat. Nevertheless, many people will notice that the Springfield has a slightly heftier grip. It may feel better in your hands especially being a smaller handgun. The Sig is known for having a pretty good trigger but I wouldn’t say it’s that much better than the Springfield.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the Springfield Hellcat is an
impressive firearm and can be a great choice for home defense and daily carry.
It is definitely small which will turn some folks away, but they are on par
with some of the top micro-compact pistols on the market. Some might like it as
a backup gun while some may never tough a Springfield gun, but the Hellcat shows
that we are moving in the right direction in firearm technology.

Handguns are an essential tool in many facets of jobs that action movie stars find themselves in. Whether being employed as a space smuggler or a hitman, having a proper sidearm is essential for the mystic and allure of the character and film. In many cases, these handguns play a pivotal part in some of the most iconic scenes in these classic movies. Without the proper handgun, the scenes or characters portrayed would no doubt be lacking much of their beloved fan favorite. Keep in mind this list doesn’t include any revolvers so don’t expect Dirty Harry’s 44 magnum or any western revolvers on this list. These are my 5 most iconic pistols in film.

Star Model B

Pulp Fiction easily one of my favorite movies of all time. Part of that reason is the flawless soliloquy given by Samuel L. Jackson’s character in the opening scene and in the final scene of the film. The classic “Bible” verse Jules recites in the opening scene and closing scene wouldn’t be the same if he hadn’t pulled out that beautifully nickel plated Star Model B pistol, which you find out in the closing scene is no ordinary 1911 because he calls his sidearm ‘Mr. 9mm over here’.

Star Model B in Action

There are so many classic props in Pulp Fiction, few as prominent as Jules’ gorgeous Star Model B Spanish pistol. To not have this firearm as number one on this list would be blasphemy. ‘Mr. 9mm’ takes up the majority of the screen time for the final scene of the movie while he has it shoved into Pumpkin’s face while taking his time explaining to him the intricacies of his beloved bible verse, how he found G-d earlier in the day, and why he wasn’t going to kill him.

Star Model B Pistol

Beretta 92

This sidearm was carried in both classic Christmas movies Die Hard and Lethal Weapon both with equal levels of effectiveness against the bad guys. Yes, both films take place during Christmas, look it up. I have to say its connection to Die Hard has to be more intense. From the iconic movie poster of John McClane holding it and in the final standoff with Hans Gruber with it taped to his back this classic 9mm was beautifully cast. The fact that ammo conservation was even a factor in this movie set it apart from other action films of the era.

Bruce Willis Fires his Beretta 92F

Also, the fact that the Berretta 92 was a relatively high tech new weapon of the day, makes a lot of sense why it was chosen and stays the trusted sidearm of John McClane. This classic Christmas tale would certainly not be the same without the Berretta 92. So often in sequels, they try to give the main character a new fancier sidearm that often makes no sense, *cough cough* Boondocks Saints 2. The fact that the filmmakers have consistently used it in all the sequels is a testament to its importance and validity as a sidearm in the franchise.

92 Beretta in Die Hard with a Vengeance

Walter PPK

No list about iconic movie handguns would be complete without one of the most iconic and recognized firearms from movies, James Bond’s Walter PPK. Very few firearms have survived reboots and actor changes, but 007’s favorite sidearm doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Regardless of the new gadgets and tools given to 007, he will always carry his trusted Walter PPK.

Bond with his Walther PPK in You Only Live Twice

Originally, 007 was carrying a Beretta M1934 but was forced to switch to the Walter PPK because the Beretta M1934 malfunctioned on his last assignment, this occurred when Sean Connery was playing Bond in Dr. No. Tossing back martinis and utilizing that license to kill solidified the Walther PPK into movie history. Its subcompact size, smooths lines, and reliability make it an obvious pick for an assassin or secret agent.

Roger Moore with a PPK

BlasTech DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol (Broom Handle Mauser C96)

Han Solo is an iconic action hero who has been featured in six Star Wars films in addition to many other non-canon books, comics, and other media. Besides for his beloved hair sidekick Chewbacca, Han Solo is attached to his trusted sidearm, the DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol. While they may have outfitted this pistol to look futuristic, Solo’s Blaster is actually a slightly tweaked Mauser C96, commonly known as the Broom Handle Mauser first developed all the way back in 1895.

Hano Solo firing Broom Handle Mauser

The Mauser box cannon went on to be reproduced all over the world and has been featured in well over 100 films and television programs, though none are as iconic as Han Solo’s. This is the gun that’s caused a whole lot of controversy in the famous Cantina scene in A New Hope where it’s not quite clear who shoots first, Han Solo or the green Greedo.

Para-Ordnance Nite Tac

Milla Jovovich has solidified herself as an action hero particularly for her role in the Resident Evil film series. The star character wields plenty of firearms throughout the films but it’s her dual-wielding of the Para-Ordnance Nite Tacs in Resident Evil: Extinction that has become so iconic. These pistols serve as her primary sidearms throughout the film and she uses them gracefully to wreak havoc on crazy survivors and battle the dead in the ruins of Las Vegas. However, her proclivity for Para-Ordnance goes back to Resident Evil: Apocalypse in which she can also be seen dual-wielding Para-Ordnance pistols, this time the .45 ACP P-14s.

Milla Jovovich Dual Wielding Para Ordnance Pistols

Conclusion

To be an iconic movie pistol partially means that the firearm and the film are almost inseparable. We understand that this is an incomplete list so we ask that you share with us your picks for the most iconic movie pistols.

The 911 from Springfield Armory is an impressive miniature version of the famous 1911 build. But how does it stack up to real criticism?

Springfield Armory started manufacturing firearms 1777 for the US military and has since grown to one of the leading arms manufacturers in the United States. Their influence on American history can’t be understated. The weapons they produced helped to arm US servicemen in every major conflict the US has been involved in. Their move to the civilian market has also seen great success. Their production of the 1911 pistol is well received by gun enthusiasts and the firearms market in general. The SA 911 is a subcompact pocket gun meant to handle and feel like a full size 1911. The difficulty of many regular shooters is finding a carry gun that fits their hands and is similar to their range mule, like the 1911. The SA 911 fills the void of carry guns that feel like full-size guns that firearms enthusiasts are used to shooting.

SA 911

Springfield Armory 911

The SA 911 is a lightweight aluminum frame, stainless steel textured slide, ambidextrous safety, and textured grips ensure a balance of the full-size feel with the comfort to carry and protect yourself if the need arises. It’s an ideal carry for those who are used to shooting full-size pistols.

The 3’’ and 2.7” barrels give more than enough accuracy for confrontational distances. It’s an ideal daily carry weapon or backup gun, with its slim design, it’s easily concealed under clothing and the snag-free design will make drawing quicker in high-stress situations when time really matters. The SA 911 series has a few variants to choose from depending on the grip, finish, and an option for a laser attachment.

There is no issue with the 911’s legality in any state. The magazine capacity is legal even under the strictest states’ laws.
Conclusion

Springfield’s fantastic reputation as a firearms manufacturer is sustained by the Springfield 911. When it comes to picking the right weapon for concealed carry and self-defense there is no right answer. Each individual needs to find a platform that fits their needs, hand size, and is comfortable for them to carry and shoot. The SA 911 is a great option for those shooters who are used to a standard pistol size, but do not want to carry around a full size 1911 on their hip.

In this article we’re going to walk through the best Smith & Wesson M&P knife to carry alongside your Shield, and exactly what makes it so great.

You know Smith & Wesson makes awesome guns, but did you know they make awesome knives? Smith & Wesson knives fly under the radar for many gun owners, but that’s about to change. Knives come in handy daily for all kinds of tasks with everything from opening boxes to peeling an apple. First, a quick history of the brand.

M&P Name

Fast forward to over a century later with the M&P pistol line launching in 2005. M&P pistols debuted a new polymer frame style that was geared toward law enforcement officials and was adopted by over 100 departments in the first year.

M&P today is synonymous with affordable quality. Not only do law enforcement officials carry M&P gear, but average and competitive shooters of all types do as well. The Bodyguard, Shield 9 and Shield 40 have taken the concealed carry world by storm and are three of the best options available today.

M&P Knife Materials

M&P OTF knives are built to not break the bank. Nothing about the materials on this knife scream top-of-the-line, but they are perfectly serviceable and will last with use. Aluminum handles can be found on a wide range of knives.

Wait, aluminum? Many people hear that and they’re surprised that aluminum can be a good, durable metal for knives. This isn’t your average soda can aluminum and will be able to take years upon years of use.

The AUS-8 blade steel is known as a budget steel. The greatest aspect of AUS-8 is that it is easy to sharpen with all kinds of different sharpeners. It will hold an edge for a decent amount of time and is pretty corrosion-resistant. The blade is coated as well, which will inhibit rust.

The single-action on this knife allows for rapid blade deployment with a slide of the switch. The thumb button can then be pushed on the top of the knife and the blade retracted using the slide. The safety is a cool feature that isn’t available on many knives. It gives extra peace of mind that the blade can’t be deployed when it’s in the pocket.

For the price, this M&P OTF knife is a great option to carry alongside your Shield.

M&P Knife Quality

Because M&P has a great reputation for quality, many
people expect that from all their products. You can find Smith & Wesson
guns in pretty much all price ranges. Their knives are a little bit of a
different story as they focus only on affordable knives with every one of them
coming in at under $85.

I’ve touched on the quality of different materials of this knife, so let’s talk about the feel. When you hold it in hand you can tell it’s a sturdy blade. It has a good amount of heft to it weighing in at close to 6 ounces, but it isn’t too heavy to where you wouldn’t want it in your pocket. It’s relatively slim and fits nicely both in hand and in pocket. The firing switch is smooth and the blade retraction is easy.

Does It Stack Up?

The knife market is saturated with expensive OTF knives.
From Microtech to Benchmade and Guardian Tactical, you can easily spend
hundreds of dollars on a good OTF knife. While these high-end knives have their
places in the knife market, the M&P OTF lineup does as well.

Like I mentioned above, Smith & Wesson M&P knives aren’t set out to turn heads with premium materials. Their focus is producing a quality product that isn’t going to break the bank. At just $45, these knives are a great. When you think of it as a complement to your EDC lineup and concealed carry, this knife is priced right in that affordability sweet spot.

OTF Knife
Use

Out the Front knives are cool. That snappy sound and rapid deployment make them appealing to all types of gear lovers. That said, there’s a stigma around OTF knives that they’re not as functional as regular folding pocket knives. While the introduction of a spring-assisted action allows more parts to fail, you can rest assured knowing these M&P knives are built to use.

OTF knives need lubrication to function. There are plenty of knife lubes out there, but you can also use your favorite gun oil. Spray some compressed air in there and put some drops down the opening where the blade comes out then fire the action a few times. This will keep it from gumming up and causing any misfires. As long as the knife is maintained and you’re not burying it in sand and dirt, this knife will function like it’s supposed to.

Conclusion

There you have it, folks. Whether you carry your Shield daily or save it for the range, Smith & Wesson M&P knives are great to have around. Keep one in pocket or put it in your gear bag and you’ll be good to go. The spring-assisted OTF action is great when you need an easily deployable blade and it’s just a joy to use.

For just $45, you could do much worse than to have one of these riding along in your pocket.

Disclaimer

Out the Front knives have received a lot of criticism through history. They were initially banned with the Federal Switchblade Act of 1958, but have made been made legal in some areas of the US. That’s SOME areas. Be sure to check your local laws before purchasing or carrying an OTF knife.

Knife Rights and AKTI are both hard at work in repealing outdated knife laws and can help answer any legality questions you have.

Our Second Amendment heritage has made firearms an everyday part of American life, driving innovation in their design and their use. Over the years, the United States has pioneered the art of the combat handgun as US inventors drove the development of the pistol from a single-shot affair to revolvers of various design, the enclosed metallic cartridge, and the semiautomatic pistol.

Beyond advances in the hardware, shooters from the US
have continuously evolved the way that gear was employed by continually improving
on lessons learned. One such pioneer was Col. Jeff Cooper, known as the ‘Father
of Modern Pistolcraft.’

Cooper’s teachings live on today as the foundation for almost all training school programs to build on. His color codes of awareness and architecture of the draw stroke are still taught today by a number of his contemporaries and their protégés. Many of these living resources are approaching the end of their teaching careers and are an opportunity to be taken sooner rather than later. Others have recently hung their shingle and peddle their take on current trends based on their experiences in the military or law enforcement.

Not all trainers teach all applicable skills – if you
are an aspiring IPSC shooter, then you train with Taran Butler like Keanu
Reeves. If you need to do a pre-deployment workup before heading over to the
‘sandbox,’ then Kyle Lamb or Dave Harrington are your guys. Patrol Officer? Go
check in with the Sig Academy. For John/Jane Q Public looking to learn the ins
and outs of concealed carry, there are a number of quality trainers who can
provide instruction directly relevant to your needs.

John Farnham – Defense Training International

John Farnham is one of those legendary resources that is approaching retirement, meaning that serious students of self-defense should register for one of his classes sooner rather than later. A Vietnam veteran, John has authored many publications related to defensive shooting and proper mindset. He regularly lectures at tactical conferences worldwide and is an adept trainer of civilian shooters.

Tom Givens – Rangemaster

Another industry veteran, Tom Givens opened his training facility in Memphis, TN in 1996 after a 25-year career in law enforcement. Rangemaster became the primary source of carry permit certifications for the greater Memphis area, with almost 60 students successfully putting their skills to the test. Together with his wife and partner Lynn, they now form Rangemaster Firearms Training Services where they now travel worldwide delivering instruction to students in their region.

Rob Pincus – I.C.E. Training Company

Rob Pincus is a professional trainer, author, and consultant, and is one of the founders of the Association of Defensive Shooting Instructors. I.C.E. provides training to armed professionals and civilian shooters alike.

Rob provides efficient training methodologies to those
interested in developing firearms and defensive skills. His methods maximize
limited training resources and focus on what the body does naturally under
real-world conditions.

Conducting over 50 courses a year in over 40
locations, Pincus travels over 300 days a year, bringing cutting-edge personal
defense information to students ranging from military and law enforcement
personnel to those who are just entering the concealed carry arena.

Clint Smith – Thunder Ranch

Clint Smith is the President and Director of Thunder
Ranch. A two-tour Marine veteran of Vietnam, his experience includes seven
years as a police officer during which he served as head of the Firearms
Training Division.

Smith left law enforcement to lead Operations for Jeff
Cooper’s American Pistol Institute, where he was Dean of instruction and
heavily contributed to range and curriculum development.

In 1993, Clint opened Thunder Ranch®, Inc. to showcase innovative training and numerous range designs not seen before. Clint is a contributor to American Handgunner, American Cop, GUNS, and SWAT magazines and has appeared in many other national and international publications.

His wife and partner Heidi Smith has been Vice President of TR since 1999. An experienced instructor in her own right, she has been active in the field since the late 1980s.

Kathy Jackson

Kathy began training at the Firearms Academy of
Seattle with FAS Director Marty Hayes and his wife, Gila. In 2003, she became a
lead instructor at FAS in 2005, working with thousands of students at this
professional firearms training facility over the years.

Kathy has been a professional student as well as an
instructor for almost 20 years, having trained with many of the great names in
the industry. She is also an adjunct
instructor for Massad Ayoob, qualified to teach Ayoob’s MAG-20 range class and Judicious
Use of Deadly Force.

From 2012 through 2017, Kathy offered firearms training nationwide for both men and women through Cornered Cat LLC.

Gunsite Academy – Where it all began

While not a specific instructor, Gunsite is one of those places where the staff instructors teach a program developed by an industry pioneer. Jeff Cooper founded Gunsite as the American Pistol Institute (API) in 1976 to teach the modern technique of shooting. At that time the firearms training school industry did not exist.

Gunsite changed hands twice since Cooper first sold
it, and Cooper acolyte Buzz Mills now runs it. Mills maintains the curriculum
as close to Cooper’s original philosophy as possible.

Firearms Training Academy of Seattle

At the Firearms Academy of Seattle, Inc. Director Marty Hayes believes safety begins with the individual. As a career law enforcement officer, he knows that the police can’t protect you.

Marty, working with his wife Gila, creates a training environment that enables the student to maximize his or her training hours. Real-world dangers present themselves in a 360-degree panorama — not only the down-range orientation of the traditional firing range training venue. F.A.S. moves the student into less-static training drills as early in the curriculum as it is safe and productive to do so.

Sig Academy

Officially launched in 1990 for training law enforcement and military clients, the Sig Academy has become a significant source of quality firearm instruction for all. Moving to their current facility in 1996 in Epping, NH they created the first-ever non-toxic, frangible indoor range.

In 2001 SIGARMS Academy introduced specialized civilian training for select organizations and businesses. Shortly after that, the demand from the civilian population grew, and the Academy audience became Armed Professionals and Responsible Citizens. Sig defines a ‘Responsible Citizen’ as anyone who can legally possess a firearm.

The major difference is defined in the tactics and disposition of an armed encounter. In Sig’s view, an Armed Professional is required to contain, control, and render proper dispensation of an armed confrontation in their jurisdiction. The Responsible Citizen has no responsibility as such and is encouraged to disengage from an armed confrontation when possible, but be prepared to act with lethal force when no other option is available.

No matter which instructor you choose to work with, be sure to check out their equipment lists before you head to class. Make sure your Kydex holster and gun belt meet the requirements of the course as many instructors will limit the kind of gear allowed on the range. Many schools prohibit certain holster designs or carry methods depending on instruction level, so plan ahead.

I love a good AR-15. Accurate, manageable, reliable to all sorts of distances (depending on your setup). I love hearing the pings and twangs of hits, misses, and ricochets. Even after years, I’m still fond of the scent of spent cartridges, especially in an outdoor range and particularly in the summertime. Hold on to your hats, people, it’s our Rock River Arms review.

As you are undoubtedly aware, there are many companies competing for your attention and your hard-earned dollars. Sure, you have guys like Cimarron Firearms and others, who are so niche that they have some measure of well-earned exclusivity. Heck, Cabot Guns is selling 1911s made from a bonafide 4-billion-year-old meteorite. But when you’re talking about modern ARs, it’s really anyone’s game, and there are many options to choose from.

Whether we’re talking about a complete system, a build, or an upgrade to an existing weapon, the question is asked: should you use Rock River Arms (RRA) for your next endeavor?

Rock River Arms

A bit of history for context: this company was founded in 1996 by two brothers, Mark and Chuck Larson. As Rick and Morty would say, these two brothers… they have a strong bond.

Before they established their outfit, Mark and Chuck had been in the firearms industry for years, working with Springfield Armory and Eagle Arms, and also partnering up with Les Baer Custom, who are known for their quality 1911 pistols.

In the mid-’90s, the Larsons set up shop as Tolerance Plus in Illinois, and the business was later renamed Rock River Arms. RRA can now be found in Colona, Illinois in a state-of-the-art facility.

RRA LAR-22 Pistol

They primarily manufacture AR-style guns, pistols, uppers, lowers, parts and components, plus they also have some alternating specials and limited edition offers, as many companies do. They also produce 1911s. In fact, they started off as a 1911-making company in 1996, and only later did they branch out into AR territory, at the turn of the millennium.

As a company, RRA went through some controversial times, particularly in the summer of 2017 when a questionable gun law was passed in their home state. Rock River Arms took steps to distance itself from the incident, but some damage was definitely done during that time. Then again, I am aware that laws and guns are two different things, really, so I’d like to focus on their manufacturing abilities.

Generally, Rock River makes good rifles and pistols. I use the term “good” loosely because it really is subjective. They’ve been producing 5.56mm and 7.62mm models since the beginning of their AR-15 manufacturing, and that’s pretty standard. Later on, 9mm joined the party, as did 300 BLK. Recently, they introduced a pistol and rifle chambered in .22LR.

RRA A4 Pistol LAR-9

I mentioned the exclusivity of other companies, because some of them are really boldly going where no man has gone before. Rock River certainly is not doing anything too exclusive, although they do have proprietary actions and designs, and even a polymer 1911 (something which is not so common).

They manufacture quality weapons, and ultimately that’s what you want – quality you can depend on to perform. RRA’s most recent additions, which debuted at SHOT Show 2019, are the BT-9G and RBG-1S series.

Rock River AR 15

Their AR-15 line, which they named the LAR-15, is varied. There are multiple versions and configurations, but it’s pretty standard stuff when you get into the guts of it; and to be clear, that is not meant in a bad way as a put-down. I think they may go in different directions in the future, but for now, it seems they are content with using what works, and with manufacturing solid, respectable, well-put-together firearms. What more do you want from a firearms maker?

QMC Rifle LAR-15

Ever since Eugene Stoner designed, released, and improved his AR system back in the mid 20th century, everyone and their mother has been using it and working off of it. It’s not by chance that the AR-15 was nicknamed “America’s Rifle”. It’s a tried, true, and tested weapons system, which is why so many companies are manufacturing them and their derivatives.

If you’re looking for a good model at a fair price, RRA is a safe bet. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to be successful – you need to provide value to your consumer and stand behind your product. RRA manage to do this for sure, and compared to others at their models’ respective prices, they deliver a good rifle which stands the test of time.

Obviously, there will always be those who claim RRA are nothing but “tactical bling”. I take issue with that. It’s one thing if you say a certain model or series is just for show, but to claim the entire company makes weapons which are “tacticool” and nothing more than that – I don’t agree. I think Rock River’s weapons are much more than that.

RRAGE TAC-Black Carbine LAR-15

Here are the specs for the classic LAR-15:

Model: RRAGE LAR-15

Caliber: 5.56mm

Capacity: 30 Rounds (comes with a single polymer magazine)

Action: Semi-auto, direct impingement

Barrel Length: 16”

Overall Length: 36”

Weight: 5.7 lbs

Sights: None

MSRP: $760

It comes with a 6-position stock, A2 grip and flash hider, Picatinny rail top, and a single-stage trigger. They also have a two-stage trigger which many people are fond of, and which comes standard with some of their other models.

This base rifle is a good option for a US-made “budget” AR-15, but as always, you may be able to find cheaper versions. In fact, you can count on finding cheaper ones, but they may not afford you with the quality of Rock River Arms.

RRAGE 3G Rifle LAR-15

The LAR-15 has a nice and sleek monolithic look to it (although it is not monolithic), so if appearances are important to you, it is something to consider. Also, if you’re not into the “complete rifle” thing, their barrels are one piece of equipment which you should think about for your AR setup or build. Whether chrome or stainless, they are a viable option which will set you back some money, of course, but is worth the price.

Rock River Arms 1911

Ever since the mid-90s, when they first started, Rock River has been into the 1911 game. It comes as no real surprise, since they were partners with Les Baer, who make some of the best 1911 pistols around. Their 1911 models (aptly named RRA 1911) are all chambered in .45 ACP, and if I am not mistaken, they are considered to be more on the semi-custom line of the 1911 spectrum. They are more than your run-of-the-mill 1911 with drop-in-parts pistol.

Bullseye Wadcutter RRA 1911-A1

There are several versions of the RRA 1911, as well as parts and components of all sorts. Their guns provide a 7+1 capacity, which is pretty standard for these types of models.

As I mentioned, there is also the polymer 1911, which some praise and others curse. There are those who feel that if Browning meant for it to be anything but steel, he would have designed it that way.

According to the company, they slowed down their production of 1911s around 2008, after they saw a significant rise in their AR sales. You gotta go with what works, you know? So they poured more focus into ARs for several years, and then reintroduced their 1911s later on, with the polymer model joining their lineup in 2014.

Here are the specs for the poly 1911:

Model: POLY RRA 1911

Caliber: .45 ACP

Capacity: 7+1 Rounds (comes with 2 stainless steel magazines)

Action: Single-action, semi-auto

Barrel Length: 5”

Overall Length: 8.3”

Weight: 2.4 lbs

Sights: White-dot, non-adjustable

MSRP: $1,025

The frame and housing are indeed polymers, but it all rides on a stainless steel chassis. The points of locking are steel, which makes a big difference in the long run. The barrel is chrome-moly, and the grips are over-molded in rubber.

It will definitely not be everyone’s 1911 of choice, and the reasons for that are obvious, but overall this model represents an interesting take on a classic piece of American weaponry.

RRA Poly 1911

Conclusion

Rock River Arms is considered by some to be “middle of the road” and nothing more, but they do have some models which are significantly more than that. Their newer models certainly solidify what RRA fans have known for a while: that this is a company capable of making more than good AR-15 clones.

Hypothetically speaking, if I had to purchase a complete AR-15 sight unseen, I would be confident and comfortable with buying a model from RRA. They have a good reputation, many years of experience with a variety of people and companies, and also a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser. It has everything I would want or need, if I am an everyday shooter.

It comes down to the shooter, as always, and the intended use. Does it feel comfortable in your hands? Does it meet your expectations as far as ruggedness and accuracy are concerned? Are you impressed by the technical specifications, or do you find them wanting? There is so much that you can’t tell about a weapon until you physically hold it and actually fire it.
